13. Indian Gyanbazi, Snakes and Ladders, 19th Century Painting on cloth 22 x 25 inches JCG3116 Jain painting depicting Gyanbazi (or “Snakes and Ladders”, as it is known in English). Gyan means knowledge and Bazi means gambling; it was a game with enlightenment as the goal, teaching basic and advanced Jain precepts of morality and ethics. This version incorporates the game into an architectural form.

14. Himalayan Region Mount Mehru, 19th Century Wood with pigments 5 x 2 ¾ x 2 ¾ inches JCG3059 Mount Sumeru, the center of a Buddhist world system, stands in the middle of a small universe. The mountain has four distinct sides each composed of a single precious substance. Surrounding the mountain are numerous rings of islands. Also in the four directions are four large continents each accompanied by two large islands. The southern continent, Jambudvipa, the land of the jambu fruit, in the shape of the Indian sub-continent, is considered to be the Earth.

Within the center of this two-dimensional mandala representing the top view of a three-dimensional celestial palace are five smaller square mandalas each containing a form of Shri Hevajra with 9 deities. The style of the painting is Nepali, evidenced by rigid geometric form, the use of bright red and blue colours and the intricate floral patterns used in the background design and flame patterns.

In this painting from which this is based, the frightful moment of God's last judgment is depicted for a Counter-Reformation audience in an inimitable manner as a whirlwind, sucking down a jumble of the bodies of the damned.

Tibetan Gilt Copper Repousse representation of Chakrasamvara as the 10 Syllables of Power, ca. 18th Century JCG3114 A representation of Chakrasamvara as the interlocking or stacked syllables of the Kalachakra mantra (Om Ham Ksha Ma La Va Ra Ya Sva Ha) commonly known as the “all-powerful ten.” Chakrasamvara is the foremost tutelary diety of Annuttarayoga Tantra, a form of meditational practice in Tibetan Buddhism.

26. Taiwan Paiwan Peoples Ceremonial Feast Platter, 19th Century 22 x 22 ½ inches JCG3115 19th Century carved wood ceremonial platter from the Paiwan people of Taiwan. The Paiwan are one of the largest groups of aboriginal pre-Han people of Taiwan. A mixed agricultural, hunting/gathering society, originally headhunters, this platter would have been used on ceremonial occasions.

From page to page the stars morph into poppies, the flower of forgetfulness. Kiefer seems to be questioning the notion that science could quantify the universe in all of its magnitude.

Dawn Clements Oval, 1995-97 Ball point pen and gouache on mounted paper 123 x 120 inches JCG3086 Oval (2000) began as a small ballpoint pen drawing inspired by the narrative of a TV soap opera and eventually, over the course of 5 years, grew to become a large work – 10 feet in diameter – of densely packed figures and texts. The resulting drawing demonstrates a cosmology of characters from melodramatic films and television viewed by the artist over that length of time.
