Dear Friends,Thank you for making 2012 a standout year for COSI! Your support allowed us to celebrate remarkable milestones, host groundbreaking exhibits, and continue our mission to inspire interest in science and encourage curiosity.

• COSI engaged nearly one million people through our onsite and offsite educational offerings!

• Approximately 22 percent of COSI member households benefitted from COSI’s Family Access Program, making the COSI

experience affordable to those who might otherwise not enjoy our inspiring experiences.

• COSI had the highest annual member attendance we have seen in years.

• We had a record-breaking fall, with our highest attendance numbers since COSI moved to its current location!

• Since 1964, more than 30 million memory-making engagements for children and adults have been created by COSI through

our onsite and outreach experiences.

Your support made these accomplishments possible in the past year!

In 2012, Columbus marked its bicentennial and COSI was at the

center of the celebration, hosting a 200th birthday party for our

city and featuring an exhibition about race that was highlighted

as a Columbus Bicentennial initiative. RACE: Are We So Different?,

designed to raise the level of conversation in our community around

issues of diversity and inclusion, also served as a catalyst within COSI

to further our own community engagement efforts. In 2012, COSI

appointed Azuka MuMin as our first Vice President of Diversity and

Inclusion to maintain momentum for our outreach efforts and lead our

comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy.

We brought Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS & The Brain to

Columbus in 2012, and offered visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

to see real human specimens and understand the incredible complexity

at work inside all of us. Visitors explored our world’s most precious

resource in the WATER exhibit and we delighted LEGO® fans of all

ages as they stormed into LEGO® Castle Adventure!

COSI continued making strides as a “center of science” that serves as

a vibrant hub of scientific activity, conversation and lifelong learning.

In February, COSI welcomed the Columbus Historical Society as our

newest onsite partner, making the rich history of our community and

our past innovation visible to more people than ever. 2012 brought

three new research teams from The Ohio State University to COSI’s

Labs in Life, giving our visitors the chance to participate in research

studies and see real science in action. COSI also served as host to

vibrant, community-driven events that celebrate innovation and design

like TEDxColumbus and the Columbus Idea Foundry’s Mini Maker Faire.

We were proud to see our innovative work recognized last fall when

COSI was selected to host peers from around the world for the Association

of Science-Technology Centers’ annual conference. COSI was thrilled to

welcome 1,700 colleagues from 39 countries to showcase unique

features of our “center of science” that supporters like you have helped

to make possible. Our colleagues marveled at COSI’s one-of-a-kind

community and scientific partnerships and enjoyed exploring

Columbus, generating $1.7 million in revenue to the local economy.

You, our donors, have enabled tremendous progress at COSI as

evidenced by an exciting year in 2012! But we know this is just the

beginning of this phase of our growth in service. 2012 offered a

glimpse into the potential of COSI we took a great step toward

becoming a richer, broader resource to our community and a true

21st century “center of science.”

Areas of FocusCOSI is committed to four Strategic Areas of Focus; Technology & Innovation, Energy & Environment, Health & Medicine and Early Childhood Education. Our goals through these strategic areas of focus are to enhance science, technology, engineering and math learning, teach critical thinking skills, increase awareness of science and technology careers, build strong families, and ensure the health and well-being of our community.

Early Childhood EducationBased on visitor feedback, COSI made enhancements to little kidspace® in 2012. We modified the exhibit entryway to improve visitor experience and created a new Big KidLab, providing cool books, games and a science lab for the older kids visiting little kidspace.

Energy & EnvironmentWe spent much of 2012 planning for COSI’s new signature experience, Energy Explorers. The exhibit, set to open in 2013, will provide an interactive resource to help our community learn more about energy use and the impact of the choices they make.

Health & MedicineCOSI opened the stunning limited engagement, Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS & the Brain in the fall of 2012. The exhibit, which highlighted neuroscience, featured more than 200 authentic human specimens that gave visitors a rare look at entire bodies, individual organs and transparent body slices.

Technology & InnovationCOSI served as the venue for two exciting events in 2012, both aimed at inspiring innovating ideas. TEDxColumbus returned for a second year in the fall of 2012 and the Columbus Idea Foundry held its first ever Mini Maker Faire at COSI.
