Correction:
Good afternoon everyone. Thanks for coming. My name is Thalia and Im studying the fourth
trimester of Graphic Design. Today, Im going to tell you the effects subliminal colors have on us
since they are used for advertising, publicity and graphic design to produce different kinds of
feelings and sensations to do something. My purpose today is to explain these effects and
consequences into the people, because I want to be aware of how consumption is influences by
the colors. Ive divided my presentation into three main points. The first point is the purpose of
using specific colors. The second, how these colors produce different sensations in the people. And
the third and last one, the meaning of each color in our perspective.
Lets start with my presentation. Color is a symbol that represents our personality, and projects
the image that we have about ourselves. Color depends about experience, personality andcultural differences. One color might make you feel mad. Another color give you calm. There are
many ways that color affects how you feel and what you think. . In graphic design, marketing
and advertising, we try to generate emotions by means of the senses and a determinate kind of
perception that the people have and how everybody have this relation with the products and the
colors that they have. Colors evoke different reactions and feelings that make a stronger influence
on the spirit and the way how people consume. Color is complex. For every color that has an effect
one way, it also has an effect anther way.
Now, what about corporations spend millions of dollars testing colors on consumers every day?
Because they know color has a huge affect on how you perceive their products.
And color also has an effect on how you perceive people. Hence, color is invaluable to making
pictures that get your message across. Colors have deep subliminal meanings that affect our
thinking and rational. They have symbolic meaning that changes amongst different cultures and
countries. We are faced with color choices all the time. These characteristics are exploited by
graphic designers and publicity to make very attractive designs. Some of the strong effects that
colors have in advertising and design are:
-They increase the recognition about an specific brand up to 80%
- Advertisings in color are read until 42% more that the same in black and white.
- 62% and 90% of the first evaluation that have the consumer about a product, its based in
the color

Lets now turn to the second point about some effects that colors have in us. Colors produce
different kinds of sensations. Originally, in the Physiological Color Theory, we have two
classifications about colors: clasificated and not clasificated. Clasificated colors determine what
we want to attracts, they give us subliminal messages, and produce the effects that makes the
products look more expensive or more value that they really are. Clasificated colors are the cold
colors, like blue, black, purple and green. Not clasificated colors only serves to support the
product, they take a product and they illuminate them; these are the hot colors, such as red,
orange, yellow and pink.
Lets take an example. In the 80s, some Scientifics, corporations and people who work in
advertising made some experiments. One of these consisted in an experiment about how the
colors influence the way you like a drink, in this case, coffee. They invited a group of 5 women,
before that they served the same flavor of coffee into 5 cups of different colors: red, brown, blue,
yellow and green. The women drank them and after that the people in charge of the experiment
asked them about if the coffee liked or not. All the women say that the coffee they drank it was
horrible, except the woman that drank the red cup, she said that was delicious. Nowadays, if you
put attention, the most used cup in the world is in color red, and this market strategy is used for
Nescaf, by Nestle. So, that covers this point.
And finally, I want to tell us about the brief meaning of the principal colors that are used in
everything:
- Yellow. - Stimulates mental processes, activates memory, and is psychologically the
happiest color in the color spectrum. Its used to grab attention of window shoppers.
Yellow is often used for childrens toys and clothes. Yellow is often hard to read when
placed on a white background so designers must be careful when using yellow, that it isnt
too difficult to read or notice. Dont paint a babys room yellow because they are more
prone to cry.
- Green. - Its an ideal backdrop in interior design because it relaxes mentally. Is the color of
nature and health. It represents growth, nature, money, fertility and safety. Many
pharmaceutical and nutritional companies use green in their logos and material to
advertise safe natural products. Workers in green environments have fewer stomach
aches.
- Blue. - It generates calms and shows creativity and intelligence. Creates a sense of
security and trust in a brand. People are more productive in blue rooms. Blue is not a
good color when used for food as there are few blue foods found in nature and it
suppresses the appetite.

- Purple. - It offers a sense of spirituality, it encourages creativity and royalty. It is used
often in beauty or anti-aging products. Purple combined with gold can be flashy and
portray wealth and extravagance.
- Pink. - It stimulates energy and can increase the blood pressure, respiration, heartbeat and
pulse rate. Its allied with youthful, fun, exciting and feminine.
-Red. - It draws attention and increases enthusiasm. Its used for impulsive shoppers and
used by restaurants to stimulate appetite. Its associated with speed.
- Orange. - It stimulates activity, appetite, and encourages socialization. It creates call to
action: buy, sell, subscribe If you used more frequently, can create a sense of anxiety.
- White. - It evokes purification and neutrality. Using white can spark a sense of creativity
since it acts at a clean state. Hollywood often portrays their characters in white as being
good; the white horse, the cowboy with the white hat, the white wizard, etc.
- Gray. - It stimulates intellect, knowledge, wisdom. Its a perfect neutral color. Too much
gray often leads to feelings of nothingness.
- Black. - Its authoritative and powerful, it evokes strong emotions. Often is a symbol of
intelligence. It can often overwhelm people if it is used too frequently.
Conclusion:
In resume, colors are very important in our lives because represent a sign about us and they
define our preferences, feelings and emotions. Theses sources are used for graphic design
and advertising to reforce subliminal messages that influences our perspective and the wayhow we buy and act. Based in the cromatic circle, we can determine the two groups of
subliminal colors: clasificated and not clasificated. And now you know some of the
caracteristics that each color produce in us.
I hope you can use this information to take better decisions when you buy a product, use
something or go to a certain place. Remember: color is only one of the strategies strategiesused by advertising in order to perform certain action; now you can contrasting at the time
