ThinkUKnowCorporate Report2016-2017
HOW DID WE DO?
ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police (AFP),
the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Microsoft Australia and Datacom, and is delivered
in collaboration with all State and Territory police and Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
ThinkUKnow is a free, evidence-based cyber safety program that provides educational
presentations to parents, carers and teachers, and young people.
Trained volunteers from ThinkUKnow industry partners and law enforcement
educate parents, carers and teachers on why and how young people use technology,
the challenges they may face, and importantly, how to get help.
State and Territory police deliver the program in schools across Australia in segmented
presentations for grades three to 12 to give young people the right tools and information to
stay safe online. 622In February 2016, ThinkUKnow welcomed Victoria Police to the program,
finalising ThinkUKnow’s national roll-out across Australia.
THINKUKNOW IS NOW THE FIRST AND ONLY NATIONALLAW ENFORCEMENT-LED CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM.

In August 2016, members from the Western Australia Local Government Association
(WALGA) were also trained to give ThinkUKnow presentations to parents, carers,
teachers and young people, to support reach into regional communities across the state.

GOING REGIONAL
SUPER SESSIONSAs part of this year’s training roll-out we brought together public speaking
experts and child safety advocates at new Super Sessions to give our
presenters a range of information and skills to support them.
We heard from:

We visited Bunbury, Alice Springs, Goulburn and Dubbo
and held digital training sessions for volunteers in

CARLY RYAN 10 YEARANNIVERSARY February 2017 marked 10 years since 15-year-old Carly Ryan became the first person in
Australia to be murdered by an online predator. To acknowledge her legacy and our
determination to ensure what happened to Carly happens to no other child,
ThinkUKnow supported a memorial quilt unveiling at Parliament House, and led an
online safety campaign #forCarly in collaboration with the Carly Ryan Foundation.
DURING THIS REPORTING PERIOD WE PROVIDED A MOREACTIVE AND RESPONSIVE PRESENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
This was achieved through several social media crime prevention
campaigns, including:
› Stay Smart Online Week
› Carly Ryan 10 Year Anniversary
› National Troll Day
› White Balloon Day
› National Child Protection Week

TEACHER’S TOOLKITWe developed our first toolkit to assist teachers in bringing
ThinkUKnow cyber safety messages directly to the classroom.
The toolkit focuses on sharing personal content (also known
as ‘sexting’) and includes a classroom activity, classroom discussion
guide, video, and information on why and how young people engage in
this behaviour. We piloted the toolkit with teachers from Tasmania in
collaboration with the Education Department of South Australia
and Family Life Victoria. It is now available to download from our
website thinkuknow.org.au.
We upgraded to a new website,
which includes dedicated areas
for parents and teachers to
access our resources.
Importantly, it also includes more
information on how to get help.
There’s a place to directly report
online child exploitation.
NEW RESOURCESWe’ve developed new resources to help parents, carers and teachers
navigate through how and why young people use technology.
We’ve now got new dedicated guides on cyber safety, cyber security
and social media reputation management, as well as new fact sheets
on the apps young people use.
BODY OF LESSONRESOURCE TWO AND THREE: VIDEOS WITH DISCUSSIONAim: For students to become aware of the personal and social impacts of using
technology, particularly the impacts of non-consensual personal content sharing.
• Play the video ‘Megan and Ryan’s Story’ without the questions to place the video into context.
– T he video depicts a teenage girl’s experience of taking a personal image of herself
and sending it to a boy who shares it with their classmates.• Play the video ‘Megan and Ryan’s Story’ with questions for class discussion.
– O n each question it is recommended that the video is paused with the following
discussion prompts.

ACTIVITYRESOURCE FOUR: EGGSPOSED! ACTIVITY
This activity can be completed as a large group or smaller groups, however each group requires one facilitator.
Choose one student to stand up and write the name of their sibling on an egg.
Select another student to play the role of their sibling’s partner.
The facilitator then hands the egg to the student in the role of the partner, to symbolise that the sibling has sent them a personal sexual image.
Direct the partner to then pass the egg to one of their other friends, suggesting that they have shared the image with someone else.
Direct the friends to pass the egg around to the other students, as quickly as possible (as gossiping and mobile communications are fast-paced) until it is passed to the teacher or facilitator.
The facilitator then declares that the image is going to be shared on social media. They throw the egg purposefully onto the �oor where it will smash. This is to demonstrate that there is a lot of harm caused by the unauthorised distribution of another person’s image.
The facilitator should ask the student whose sibling’s image was shared to help clean up the egg.
If the student is reluctant to clean up the mess, the facilitator should then ask the partner who �rst shared the image to take responsibility for their actions and to clean up the egg.
If this student is also reluctant to clean up the mess, the facilitator should question the audience to think about who should be responsible. This is to demonstrate that when something is circulated and shared online, lots of people played a role and could be responsible.

What is Snapchat?Snapchat is an application which is
free to download on iOS and Android
devices that allows users to send images and videos (‘snaps’) to each
other. Snaps can be viewed for up to
10 seconds before they ‘dissolve’.Operating the app requires use of the device’s data plan or a wireless
internet connection. Images can be
drawn on using a whiteboard-style
tool and can be given a caption. Snapchat also gives users the and emojis over images or videos
to create different looks or themes. What is the age restriction for Snapchat?although much of the content may be inappropriate for
an account they are given access to ‘SnapKidz’ which is a
limited version of the app where users are not able to send
images to other users. It is important to note that these
