Developing application techniquesWorking with material for road and horizontal markings involves constant development. At Geveko Markings, we continuously work on new application techniques and on improving the existing application processes of our marking materials.

Road trials A lot of work and preparation is done in the laboratories, but the real test is carried out on the actual road and horizontal surfaces. This is where we can make sure that the products lives up to

our own strict demands as well as to the expectations of our clients. Practical road tests are therefore a key factor when we develop and create new products.

Case StudiesShowcasing a range of projects using Geveko Marking materials

Drivers on the streets of Tauranga, New Zealand may slow down and take an extra look when they come across this special crossing – and in fact that is precisely the point. This unique marking is designed to make drivers slow down and be extra aware of the vulnerable road users.

The newly applied PREMARK® crossing creates an eye-catching optical illusion as it appears to be floating in the air. It thus offers a new twist to the traditional type of pedestrian crossing - but that is not all. Besides being more visually engaging that the conventional crossings, this type of marking also aims to make the roads safer.

Striking 3D crossing in New ZealandThis eye-catching 3D crossing in PREMARK® has grabbed the headlines in New Zealand with a unique traffic calming concept.

In Tauranga, which is the most populous city in the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand, the City Council has chosen to try out this solution for one of its pedestrian heavy areas. The marking is a decorative effort to make drivers more alert when they reach the area designated to protect pedestrians and was supplied through our distributor in Australia and New Zealand, Reflective Road Safety Products.

As mentioned above, the markings are made of our well-known PREMARK® material which ensures high quality and long durability. What sets the 3D markings apart from traditional markings, however, is the special

design which utilises the principles of anamorphic illusion. This means that a certain design perspective is forced onto a basic marking which makes the marking appear to be a floating, physical object when seen from a specific angle. The result is a striking piece of street art that uses visual creativity to bring attention to the crossing. In fact, the marking sparked so much attention that it spurred an article on New Zealand’s largest news site, Stuff.

The initial response to the effectiveness of this marking are positive and more 3D crossings are to be installed throughout the streets of Tauranga.

Nestled in a former clay pit in Cornwall, the Eden Project is a unique and visually stunning place consisting of beautiful gardens and massive Biomes housing the largest rainforest in captivity. Acting as the epitome of transformation, these surroundings now provide the backdrop for cultural exhibitions, summer concerts and exciting year-round family events. With over one million visitors each year, the large network of paved pathways in the gardens has been submitted to its fair share of wear and tear since its opening in 2001. Something which had naturally begun to damage the visual impact of the popular tourist attraction.

Paving the way in the garden of EdenWhen the Cornwall-based educational charity, Eden Project, recently needed to refurbish the pathways in their awe- inspiring gardens, Adtex Resin Bonded Paving provided the perfect solution.

As an alternative to the tarmac that was previously used for the pathways, the Eden Project required a material that was aesthetically pleasing to the eye, blended well with the environment, and was durable with anti-slip properties. Adtex resin system supplied by Geveko Markings was chosen as it fit the bill perfectly on all accounts.

What also appealed to the Eden Project was the fact that the Polyurethane resin binder used in our resin system is made with plant-based materials. This meant that the material supported their strong ethos regarding sustainability and the concern with which they choose their materials.

The application method of the Adtex meant there was no need to dig up existing pavements, providing a cost effective and instant change to the paths. The range of aggregate colours available furthermore gave the people at the Eden Project flexibility to be creative and add some fun to the paths in several different locations. One example is the Western Australia garden in one of the Biomes, where Adtex was used in a range of coloured aggregate to produce Aboriginal inspired patterns.

The Eden Project liked the Adtex material so much that they are now training their staff so that they can lay and maintain future installations.

This red and white PREMARK® pedestrian crossing has recently been applied in the municipality of Oeiras, Portugal. It is not the first of its kind in the area which is situated close to the capital of Lisbon - and it definitely won’t be the last! This particular type of crossing has been received very positively in the municipality and therefore, an increasing number will be applied in the near future.

The application of the eye-catching crossing took place in May and was made by our customer F.L. GASPAR. Due to the strong red colour, it really stands out to all road users passing by. As mentioned above, the marking is made of our well-known PREMARK® material.

These easily applicable preformed markings are characterised by their high quality and long durability and offer almost endless opportunities. These properties are part of the explanation of the good feedback and great success that PREMARK® is receiving in general – and in this case in the area of Oeiras.

Popular PREMARK® crossings in PortugalRed and white PREMARK® pedestrian crossings have been a great success in the area of Oeiras in Portugal.

The municipality of Langeland has applied ChipFill® thermoplastic road repair material as a much required solution to a problem on a harbour quay in Rudkøbing, Denmark. The problem being that the cobblestone paving, on the quay, was under threat of being washed away by sea water during high tides and storms.

ChipFill®, normally used as a temporary road repair for smaller holes and cracks in the roads, was an ideal solution for The municipality of Langeland. The ChipFill® material can be swept into the joints, between the cobblestones, and is able to secure and keep them in place during inclement weather.

Stabilising paving in DenmarkGeveko Markings were to the rescue in a bid to avoid cobblestone paving from being washed away by turbulent sea water.

In the autumn of last year, our Norwegian customer A-Merking AS applied these markings for the municipality of Trondheim. The aim was to re-energise the area outside Trondheim Central Station where lots of passengers pass by every day – and the result has been met with great satisfaction.

The markings are made with a combination of PlastiRoute® and DecoMark® material, but are kept in the same bright, light blue colour. This ensures consistency and provides the area with a characteristic look. It took two applicators a total of 16 hours to complete the entire project, which has given the somewhat greyish area a completely new feel.

More precisely, the markings consist of geometric shapes and lines in PlastiRoute® RollGrip® and a DecoMark® map of Norway showing the country’s railway network. The speech bubble placed next to the map contains the names of some of the train station cities. As a fun little gimmick, it challenges passers-by to see if they can place the different cities on the map.

The mix between the roughly textured PlastiRoute® RollGrip® and preformed DecoMark®

material is a good example of how our products can be combined to adhere to all customer wishes.

Transformation of central stationThanks to A-merking AS, a brightly coloured combination of PlastiRoute® RollGrip® and DecoMark® now livens up Trondheim Central Station.

Carriageway manhole covers, especially on bends, can present a potentially lethal danger to motorcyclists. It is well known that over time some manhole cover surfaces become smooth and polished and if wet, very slippery. But, thanks to the work undertaken by the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF), the UK committee working on the revision of European Standard EN124 have agreed unanimously to recommend a minimum ‘polished skid resistance value for manhole covers’.

Now, the British Motorcyclists Federation are working with Geveko Markings to solve the problem and secure slippery manhole covers, making them safer for vulnerable road users.

The solution is PREMARK® AntiSkid - a quick and simple method to make slippery manholes skid resistant. This is a cheap and fast alternative to changing the manhole covers with new ones. Application takes just moments and requires only one person with a propane fueled heat gun, no specialised equipment is necessary.

The surface material of PREMARK® Anti-Skid contains a high density of transparent glass grains, which are tumbled to avoid sharp glass grains. During installation the glass grains sink into the road marking, providing the surface with a high level of friction.
