2.1 Our History
6Corporate Brochure 2018
Our people are our business – they are our most valuable asset. Management is always available to its staff and there are open and transparent communication channels which allow for queries and issues to be addressed and resolved at any time.
Tri-Star has strategically positioned itself as a key player in the construction industry. The company has developed a sustainable and effective business plan which has been fine-tuned through years of experience. This is its key to enhancing the value for all stakeholders and ultimately achieving the success that it is has been rewarded by.
We are excited about our future in the Construction industry and we look forward to leaving an even bigger imprint in our industry as we grow from strength to strength.
Typically an Exco member will establish a project team for the execution of each project. This team will be carefully resourced to ensure that the skills, plant and equipment etc. are sufficient to meet the demands of the specific project. The one ‘shared goal’ is to complete each project timeously whilst ensuring the utmost attention to safety and quality. We are members of SAIOSH and have our own in-house Health and safety department that ensures we are aligned to best practice when it comes to health and safety.
We control quality through the compliance and adherence to our Quality and Assurance manual and procedures. Further, our experience ensures that our ‘no compromise to quality’ policy is the most efficient and economical approach to construction.

2.6 Our ValuesTri-Star’s aim is to continuously build and strengthen its reputation as a formidable force in the construction industry by creating long-term relationships with our clients and the professionals with whom we work and by delivering projects of superior quality.
‘No two days are the same’ is a very familiar expression in our industry. There are complex challenges that confront us daily. It is important that our staff identify these as challenges and not as problems. We therefore apply a ‘hands on’ approach when it comes to servicing our Clients, where our staff are encouraged to think before they act and find a solution to the challenge that confronts them.
Gordon Bell, City Property CEO: “Our experience is that we can depend on Tri-Star to complete a project successfully and that they always approach their work with professionalism and enthusiasm.”
Louise Osborne, Louise O Architects: “Tri-Star’s team, across the board, and throughout the project possessed a diligent and fair-minded attitude which, no doubt, contributed greatly to the successful execution of the project.”

These initiatives focus on transformation, bringing about substantial change in the racial and gender composition of ownership, control and management within our company.
Not only do we conform to these B-BBEE standards, but we are also accredited with a B-BBEE level 3 status. Tri-Star Group Holdings is 22.46 owned by BA-Akhi Investments, a black empowerment company owned by Malose and Albertinah Kekana.

Transformation is something that is continuously being implemented at Tri-Star. In line with our View on Tomorrow, in March 2017 Tri-Star sold their original 38 year-old business, then called Tri-Star Painting and Renovations, to Sello Masilo. He has a lovely story to tell:
Sello studied a BSc Quantity Surveying at Wits University and spent some years working for Group Five. He decided to join Tri-Star in 2008 as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, but at the same time he was placed under the scrupulous eyes of management, where he was mentored through commercial and management functions within the organisation. In 2011, after plenty of guidance and
experience, Sello was appointed Commercial Director. In 2013 Sello was offered minority shares within the business. He
decided to further his education, which was funded by Tri-Star, and in 2015 he completed an Advanced
Management programme through Wits. The BBBEE transition process was completed in 2017 when 100% of the shares in Tri-Star Painting and Renovations were transferred to Sello.
Today Sello still sub-contracts to Tri-Star Construction. He and his partner are a Level 1
B-BBEE company and operate under the name Pivot Painting and Renovations Solutions. He is
running an extremely successful business in Gauteng with a satellite branch in Durban and makes an annual
turnover of R65 million.

4.3 Training & Skills development
We believe in empowering our people, as well as those in the communities wherein we work. We thrive on up-skilling and supporting the local communities and the SMMEs near to our projects. We will make it our goal to provide work opportunities for the community, so that they in turn can be motivated to support their families. We will mentor the sub-contractors and train them on site, and when they are ready, we will also assist them in the establishment and financial control of their business. This teaches them core business skills, management skills, finance management, quality control, client relationship building etc. Effectively it aids in the business growth and success of SMMEs, while enhancing productivity, building discipline, and allowing them to reach their goals. We want to come into a community and leave behind skills, create upliftment through training and support local suppliers. This is one of the ways that we can give back to our community.
Riverside and Riverview projectWe continuously place our staff on training courses and programmes to challenge them and make sure that they are at the forefront of the construction industry in South Africa. A collaborative range of skills ensures long-term individual sustainability and skills retention within Tri-Star.Not only do we continually invest in the education of our permanent staff to further enhance the transformation of our workforce, but Tri-Star has also established a Tertiary Education Trust. The trust identifies the children of our previously disadvantaged employees who wish to make a career in the construction industry and provides them with bursaries to further their education. This has been a great initiative so far, resulting in many success stories to date.
Zoe KhumaloZoe is employed by Tri-Star as a Health and Safety officer. Zoe has energy and charisma, and from the onset she was identified as a staff member to watch and grow and invest in. She is currently being trained to become a registered Health and Safety manager. She runs a team of 400 workers and on a Thursday, you will see her running the Toolbox discussion for the whole site.
32Corporate Brochure 2018
Our employment policy actively targets previously disadvantaged individuals. We see the need to empower those less fortunate than us as we can have a direct impact on the improvement of their welfare. Currently, 56 per cent of our management and salaried staff is previously disadvantaged.
A further focus is the effective advancement of employment equity and skills development while adhering to the principles of non-racialism and non-sexism, accelerating the advancement of black men and women, disabled people and designated groups with the emphasis on bursaries, learnerships and technical training.

34Corporate Brochure 2018
Tri-Star is committed to uplifting the quality of life for the communities where we work. By sharing our knowledge and skills and being socially responsible, we are contributing to the empowerment of the people in the communities around us. We embrace the philosophy of giving back to the community by being proactive in Tri-Star’s various initiatives.
Diepsloot Informal Settlement CommunityTri-Star is the main contractor to the Riverside Development which is one of the 5 Mega City’s in and around Gauteng. The Diepsloot Region and surrounding informal Settlements benefits largely from employment and sub contract opportunities.
Tri-Star provided material for new shacks when the blue gum trees were felled, as the trees were a threat to the shacks. Pheagane ‘Jakes’ Maponya, Regional Head, Housing Region A: “I would like to take this opportunity in expressing my sincere appreciation of your kind donation of shack rebuilding material for twenty shacks. With your generous giving, the destitute families could easily rebuild their shacks after City Parks cut the trees which threatened their lives.”
We encourage our staff to use local suppliers wherever possible to stimulate community development in the area. On an ongoing process we have engaged with the larger suppliers to form partnerships with local smaller businesses and create new employment and small business opportunities . With our support, the small hardware concerns have the opportunity to grow and employ more local people.

35Corporate Brochure 2018
Tri-Star is conscious of minimising the impact that our buildings have on the environment. We are therefore a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa. We strive to align ourselves with this Council by constructing buildings that are energy efficient, resource efficient and environmentally responsible.
We have actively been involved with International Housing Solutions (IHS) and the Green Council in developing a ‘housing appropriate’ green accreditation internationally known as EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies). We are proud to say that several EDGE accredited projects have been completed to date.
