Get to know the Odenwelders

Matt “Ody” and Angie Odenwelder will be joining the Cornerstone family beginning in January. Here’s some info from them so you can get to

know a little a bit better.

What’s your background—where you grew up? How did you get to where you are?

Ody: I grew up in the Poconos (mere minutes from the world famous Snydersville Diner) and spent much of my time in Pen Argyl, a tiny slate mining town a half hour north of Allentown, where my parents grew up and where our church was located. I went to Lancaster Bible College, and we’ve been hanging around the Lancaster area ever since.

Angie: I’m from a small town called Terre Hill in northern Lancaster County. In high school, all my friends were kids on the fringe, some of which were really hurting. Ever since then, I knew I wanted to help kids like my friends when I grew up, which led me to get my Bachelor’s in Psy-chology at Millersville University. Also, I get to help Ody out and connect with the kids in Youth Group! Added bonus!

How did you two meet?

Ody: We met while Angie was singing in a band, and I was attending LBC—we were in the same “circles” for a while, and one day we met face to face at a mutual acquain-tance’s house. We hit it off right away, and we’ve been together ever since.

What sort of other interests, hobbies, and activities do you have?

Ody: We’re both really into Premier League Football (soc-cer to us Americans) right now … but we’re both avid video gamers, into movies and books—we’re geeks, and there’s no denying it.

Personally, I’m what you could call a “Maker.” I love mak-ing stuff. Right now I’m obsessed with learning hand tool woodworking—although I’d like to get into 3D printing and hobby CNC.

Angie: I don’t really have any interest in most sports that have local teams, but I do support the Philly Union (major league soccer)! Ody covered just about everything; some of our particular geek-doms include Lord of the Rings, Sher-lock (BBC), and super heroes, just to name a few!

Tell us about your journey of faith

Ody: I grew up as the child of youth leaders, and was

rather rebellious until I came to the faith in 9th grade. My Youth Group’s sense of community, acceptance, and love was key in my salvation, and that’s echoed throughout my life and ministry ever since.

Angie: I’m one of those boring people who has considered themselves a Christian their whole life, but my faith really blossomed in Jr. High as the result of a close-knit youth group, and through the influence of a Christian ska band named Five Iron Frenzy.

Ody, how did you come to concentrate on working with youth as your ministry?

Ody: My youth pastor in high school, Ron, was pretty important—he made me a student leader, and eventually sat me down and pointed me in this direction—not only ministry, but youth specifically.

Angie: As I said earlier, my youth group was a large part of my spiritual formation. I was a student leader in my youth group as well, and from my experience, youth group is a great place for kids to learn about God and grow in their faith. Oh, and I married a guy who is a youth pastor ;-).

Ody, the Pastor Search Team felt you were a good fit for Cornerstone. Why do YOU feel you are a good fit for Cornerstone?

Ody: Cornerstone feels like home—Duncannon could easily be confused with the Poconos, and the church itself reminds me of my Youth Group growing up, just all grown up—a focus on one another, the Bible, and of course, a healthy relationship with Christ.

Angie, how will you help Ody as Cornerstone’s Youth Pastor?

Angie: Well, I definitely like to be actively involved in the ministry, but, behind the scenes, I try to steer him away from some of his more “ill-advised” ideas.

What are your goals as you become a part of the Cor-nerstone family in 2015?

Ody: Getting to know everyone—not just the youth but their families and friends, people’s likes and dislikes, talents and abilities … I have a lot of new friends to get to know!

Angie: I’d like to learn everyone’s names! There’s a lot of you! Also, I’d love to learn more about the Cornerstone family and discover how Ody’s and my gifts can best be used to serve!

Let’s meet!Joe Sassaman, Elder Chair

Our 2015 Annual Meeting will be held January 18 after the second service (approximately 11:30am). This is a very important meeting

since we will be voting on updated versions of the Constitu-tion and By-Laws (integrating our three-part process—Cel-ebrate | Connect | Reach) and modifying our fiscal year to begin July 1, providing more efficient ministry planning based on church activities. We will also be affirming our elders and church officers for the 2015 calendar year.

You will find a link to our updated Constitution and By-Laws on our Web site, or you may pick one up from the church office. When Cornerstone was founded and decided to incorporate, we were required by Pennsylvania state law to have a constitution and by-laws. For reasons of swift-ness, convenience, and to comply with the requirements, we acquired a generic constitution from another Evangeli-cal Free church. Because these documents were not written specifically for Cornerstone, we ended up with a charter that is very difficult to follow. Cornerstone has been blessed with growth in both size and spiritual maturity since its founding, which has made it evident that the original Constitution and By-Laws from 2005 are long overdue for improvement.

Cornerstone’s mission and three-part process (Celebrate | Connect | Reach.) are now integrated throughout these important articles. Have peace in knowing we are not changing our church but simply updating these important documents to be consistent with our beliefs and how we “do church.”

The updated Constitution and By-Laws include more consistency, transparency, and accountability, and room for future growth. The documents offer clarity, which allows consistent operation of Cornerstone. Current and future partners, volunteer leaders, elders, staff, and pastors will be able to understand Cornerstone’s beliefs, structure, opera-tions, and roles of the entire Cornerstone family.

Please review the Constitution and By-Laws (available on the church Web site—cccduncannon.com/Connect/Part-ners—and at the Welcome Center) and ask any questions you may have prior to the meeting. You may direct ques-tions to any member of the Elder Team (Joe Sassaman, Vince McCollum, Rob Morris, Tom Belmont, Rich Rector, and Jason Harrison) or to the church office. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you may pick up an absen-tee ballot from the church office. Please return it to the church before Sunday, January 18th, to ensure your vote is counted. The approval of the budget extension will be by a majority show of hands by those attending the meeting.

Thanks for playing an active role in Cornerstone!

God’s Not Dead movie night

Pick up your FREE tickets at the Welcome Center to be a part of this great event on Saturday, January 10 at 6pm. Popcorn, snacks, and drinks will be

provided. We will also offer a movie in the Youth Room for kids and provide nursery/toddler care. Join us for this free movie night to kick off Pastor David’s “God’s Not Dead” sermon series, which begins Sunday, January 11.

More commandmentsThou shall not worry; for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.

Thou shall not be fearful; for most of the things we fear never come to pass.

Thou shall not cross bridges before you come to them; for no one yet has succeeded in accomplishing this.

Thou shall face each problem as it comes; you can only handle one at a time anyway.

Thou shall not take problems to bed with you; for they make very poor bedfellows.

Thou shall not try to relive yesterday for good or ill, it is forever gone; concentrate on what is happening in your life and be content now.

Thou shall be a good listener; for only when you listen do you hear different ideas from your own. (It’s hard to learn something new when you’re always talking.)

Thou shall not become “bogged down” by frustration; for 90 percent of it is rooted in self-pity and will only interfere with moving forward.

Thou shall count thy blessings; never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to a big one.

January 4 • What’s Your Importance Factor?

Scripture: Ephesians 3:1–12Synopsis: God has put each of us here for a purpose.

The next four Sundays are based on the movie God’s Not Dead. (So be sure to get your FREE tickets and watch the movie showing at Cornerstone on Saturday, January 10!)

January 11 • Where Is God When Life Falls Apart?

We cannot answer a “why” question about suffering because God has not revealed all of His purposes. We can only see dimly now, like a foggy reflection, but we can see enough of His ways through the revelation of Scripture to trust Him that He knows what is best for us, despite the broken world we live in with broken lives.

January 18 • Is Our Faith Blind?

There is some very strong evidence in the existence of God—the Bible, our experiences, answered prayer, cre-ation, and the church.

January 25 • How Do We Respond to the Skeptic?

Winning an argument is not as important as winning a soul. Be in the Spirit as you discuss your faith and answer hard questions about the gospel with humility and gentle-ness, seeking to win them and not just a debate. Remem-ber, the goal of our instruction is love.

February 1 • Taking A StandScripture: Philippians 2:3–4

We are more effective if we truly care for others.

Forget your offering envelope on Sunday? No prob-lem! You can now set up one-time or recurring pay-ments to cover regular or special offerings.

Deaf signing

Jessica Bentley-Sassaman and Gina DiFiore-Ridolph generously offer their services as interpreters for the deaf at our 9am Sunday Celebration. If you need this

service, please try to sit in the first row on the right side of the multi-purpose room as Jessica and Gina sign the lyrics to our worship music and the sermons.

Our goal in parenting is NOT ultimately for our kids to get a great education or to be great athletes or to find a great husband or to get a great career. Our goal is for them to LOVE A GREAT GOD.

Marriage Mentors

We’ve all heard the statistic—the divorce rate is somewhere around 50 percent, even for Christian

couples. But something incredible happens when couples come together in mentoring relationships, striving to seek God’s blue-print for marriages. Somehow the effect of a relatively happy (we’re not perfect), more experienced couple coming alongside a less experienced couple is profound. Our goal is to set up a team of Marriage Mentors to come alongside engaged couples, newly married couples, couples

who want to move beyond a “good” mar-riage to a great marriage, and couples in distress or dealing with stressful life events. If you and your spouse are interested in Marriage Mentoring, sign up for training to be a mentor on our Web site or contact Megan Safko ([email protected]) or the church office (834-4641) for an application. If you and your spouse would like to be connected to a mentor, contact Megan Safko or Pastor David.

The Over 50s will have an “After Christmas” Party at June and Jack Smith’s house, 271 Roseglen Road, on Sunday, January 18 right

after the church meeting that Sunday. Please bring a covered dish to share. We can enjoy games, a pool table, and even ping pong, or just enjoy talking. Instead of a gift exchange, we are asking that you bring a gift item that someone in a nursing home would enjoy. Use your imagination, but if you need suggestions—hand/body lotion, shower gel, aftershave, word search books, cross-word puzzles, socks, lap blankets, note cards and stamps, stuffed animals, or even decorations for their rooms (noth-ing to be plugged in).

Please mark this date on your calendars! The party is open to all—the more the merrier! If you have any questions, contact Charlotte Barrett (834-6364 or [email protected]) or June Smith (834-4917 or juneandjack [email protected]).

The Over 50s will also meet January 14 at 9am for break- fast at the Marysville Diner with Pastor David. Be sure to join us!

Adult Sunday school

Warriors for Christ men’s group

This Connect group for men meets the second Saturday of each month at 4pm at various homes for BBQs and discussions about life. Whether the topic is mar-

riage, kids, jobs, etc., we look at how we can honor God in these times. Contact Jim Dersham or Mark Emick for locations.

The new Women’s Bible Study

begins Thursday, January 22 from 10am–12noon, using the book An-gels—Who Are They and How Do They Help … What the Bible Reveals by Dr. David Jeremiah.

You are welcome to join the Thursday morning Bible study connect group as we dig into God’s Word and learn what it has to say about angels. What are angels, and what is their role in God’s plan? Are they real? Do they give us personal insight about our work and worship? In this broad, thor-ough survey of Scripture, Dr. Jeremiah clearly and simply separates fact from fiction as it relates to angels.

Contact Dolores Bennett (957-2829 or bennetts1963 @centurylink.net) if you’re interested in this study. Work-books are approximately $12 each.

We’ve got yoga, bas-ketball, and Zumba!

Zumba is at Cornerstone on Thursdays at 6pm. On Tues- days, bring some friends and

shoot some hoops at the Adult Open Gym Basketball at 7pm. We’ve also got Yoga classes in the multipurpose room on Mondays from 6:15–7:30pm, led by Alyshia Laird. Both the yoga and Zumba classes are are $4 each.

Rocks of Ages—soup’s on!Katrina Boyer

The Rocks of Ages’ next gathering will be at the church on Saturday, January 24 at 5pm for a potluck dinner and great fellowship. We’ll also

discuss plans for different activities in the upcoming year. You will not want to miss the soup and build-your-own-salad bar! I’ll provide vegetable beef and chicken noodle soups, and ask you to bring your fav- orite soup OR dessert AND your favor- ite salad topping! Please RSVP to CornerstonesRocksofAges@gmail. com or call Katrina (514-2375) by Wednesday, January 21.

Many of you know that I have gone back to school, so this year I’ll be looking for “helpers” to come up with some ideas and lend a hand with coordinating some of our events. I’ll bring my calendar—you come prepared to “schedule” our monthly gatherings. I want to stick to meeting on a defined Saturday (the 4th Saturday of every month) so that we can encourage as many people to join us as possible.

Remember that the Rocks of Ages welcomes any “middle age” person who is looking to connect in a fun way at Cor-nerstone. Some of our upcoming events will be advertised as “adults only” and other events will welcome families. I can’t wait to see YOU on January 24!

Check out the Feels Like Home Thrift StoreMaryann Camacci

Stop in and check every- thing out! And we are always

looking for volunteers to work at the store on Saturdays from 10am– 2pm, and help with pick up and delivery (you’ll need to have a truck). And we can always use dona- tions of furniture, house- hold goods, and linens. PLEASE PRAYFULLY CONSIDER THIS MINISTRY AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE. You can sign up at the store (a calendar is located on the counter) or send your available dates to Maryann Camacci ([email protected]) or the church office ([email protected] or 834-4641).

We need to find God, and He can’t be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature—trees, flowers, grass —grows in silence; see the stars, the moon, and the sun, see how they move in silence. We need silence to be able to touch souls.Mother Teresa

The journey to BethlehemKeith Wilson, Reach Director

Well, another Drive-Thru Nativity has come and gone. I’d like to take a moment to thank all the people who volunteered to make this event such

a success. First, thanks to Maryann Camacci and Megan Safko for coordinating the entire event. I know we couldn’t pull this off without them. I’d also like to thank all the folks who cooked dinner every night, the people who decorated and helped get the actors dressed, the men who set up and tore down the buildings, and lastly, but certainly not least, all of the actors who brought this miraculous story to life.

One of the neat things about this event is that it uses all the parts of our church’s three-part process. We get to CELE-BRATE Jesus while CONNECTING with fellow Christ-follow-ers from our church. And we get to REACH people in our community and show them God’s love through this amaz-ing story. More than 300 cars came through the Nativity this year. With an average of four people per car, that’s at least 1,200 people with whom we were able to share the story of Jesus’ birth. I’m going to assume there was at least one or two people who have not accepted Christ as their Savior, and perhaps something seen at the Nativity will trig-ger something in their hearts that will lead them to seek a relationship with God.

As you’ve heard David and me saying (over and over), the great thing about REACH activities is that while we are showing people God’s love, we are growing as Christ followers. And seeing people grow in their faith is what ex-cites me most about the Drive-Thru Nativity. If you were not able to help this year, I would like to invite you to help with next year’s event. Believe me when I tell you, you will get much more out of it than you put in to it. After all, Christ’s birth is the reason for the season!

New for 2015—pre-school Kid’s Club on Sunday nights!

Starting in January, we will be offering Kid’s Club for pre- schoolers (ages 3–5) on

Sunday nights during our regular Kid’s Club time (5:30–7pm). Using Group Publishing’s Hands-On Bible curricu- lum, your preschool will have fun act-ing out Bible stories, playing games, crafting, and singing and much more!

BYOBible Sundays!

The Children’s Ministry wants to encourage all chil-dren to Bring Your Own Bible to church on Sun-days. Children’s Ministry volunteers are making

a sincere effort to get your children into God’s Word each week, and it would be helpful if children could bring their own Bibles to Sunday school and Children’s Church. Our preferred translation is NIV. If your child doesn’t have his or her own Bible, we will be happy to provide one. Each time children BYOBible to church, they will be allowed to add a sticker to the reward chart in the classroom. Those stickers will eventually add up to some pretty cool prizes.

Please remember to check your email frequently, as this is our primary way of communicating with you. If you are a preschool or elementary school Sunday

school teacher or Children’s Church teacher, we will be sending lessons to you electronically. If you are unable to download or print off your lessons, please contact Stepha-nie Morris ([email protected]) and we will make arrangements for you to receive paper copies of the lessons.

VBS 2015—time to start planning!

It’s time to start planning Cornerstone’s Vacation Bible School for 2015! Our theme is “Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power.” We will need

LOTS of help to make this a great event for the children in the Duncannon area. Each year, we have more than 100 children participate in our VBS. We will need help planning, decorating, teaching, leading, preparing food, greeting, and so much more. For those of you who are not able to volunteer year-round in Children’s Ministry, this is a great way to get involved in a one-time event. Going green!

We’ve got new recycling bins located outside the kitchen under the tables in the hallway. Anyone that works in the kitchen for any functions or

activites or uses other church supplies—check and see if you can recycle the packaging. The bins are marked for a number of recyclable items. Go green!

Follow along

We’re offering an interactive way for you to follow along with the Sunday morning sermons

through a FREE App and Web site called You Version. Go to youversion.com for the Bible portion of the program, and youversion.com/live where you’ll type in our zip code (17020) for the ability to fol-low along with the sermon on your iPhone while Pastor David delivers the message. It’s a great way to get into the Word and follow the messages. Check it out!

Need a new box of offering envelopes? Just stop by the Welcome Center on Sunday

mornings and pick up a box.
