That is the way the media reports on Christianity in the news. If we believe what we see and read, most Christians are non-compassionate judgmental types, who believe God is on their side no matter what the gospel message says, or most churches practice. John Pavlovitz is a pastor and author, who writes about, in his words, stuff that needs to be said.I share his words here, as we all consider what kind of Christians we are called to be. I refuse to be a Christian who lives in fear of people who look or speak or worship differently than I do. I refuse to be a Christian who believes that God blesses America more than God so loves the world. I refuse to be a Christian who cant find the beauty and truth in religious traditions other than my own. I refuse to be a Christian who uses the Bible to perpetuate individual or systemic bigotry, racism, or sexism. I refuse to be a Christian who treasures allegiance to a flag or a country or a political party, above emulating Jesus. I refuse to be a Christian who is reluctant to call-out the words of hateful preachers, venomous politicians, and mean-spirited pew sitters, in the name of keeping ceremo- nial Christian unity. I refuse to be a Christian who tolerates a global Church where all people are not openly welcomed, fully celebrated, and equally cared for. I refuse to be a Christian who speaks always with holy war rhetoric about an encroaching enemy horde that must be rallied against and defeated. I refuse to be a Christian who is generous with damnation and stingy with Grace. I refuse to be a Christian who cant see the image of God in people of every color, every religious tradition, every sexual orientation. I refuse to be a Christian who demands that others believe what I believe or live as I live or profess what I profess. I refuse to be a Christian who sees the world in a hopeless spiral downward and can only condemn it or withdraw from it. I refuse to be a Christian devoid of the character of Jesus; his humility, his compassion, his smallness, his gentleness with peoples wounds, his attention to the poor and the forgotten and the marginalized, his intolerance for religious hypocrisy, his clear expression of the love of God. I refuse to be a Christian unless it means I live as a person of hospitality, of healing, of redemption, of justice, of expectation-defying Grace, of counterintuitive love. These are non-negotiables. Many Kinds of Christians

As I type these words more US troops have been sent to the Middle East the Senate is beginning an impeachment trial of the President Australia and Puerto Rico are reeling from natural disasters and there is a wake for a 43-year-old cancer victim taking place in the church lobby just off my study I know Jesus is weeping and sometimes so am I

There is something else that makes me not only sad but frustrated and spiritually angry as well That is the way the media reports on Christianity in the news If we believe what we see and read most Christians are non-compassionate judgmental types who believe God is on their side no matter what the gospel message says or most churches practice John Pavlovitz is a pastor and author who writes about in his words ldquostuff that needs to be saidrdquo I share his words here as we all consider what kind of Christians we are called to be

From Pastor Amanda I sat down the other night at my dining room ndash scrapbook ndash art table Music on in the background A pot of peppermint tea brewing Watercolors stamps colored pencils and drawing pencils laid out in front of me The table was a cluttered mess since I basically moved scrapbooking stuff out of the way that I had been working on to make room for this new project I grabbed my journal and began flipping through the crisp white pages

In the past Irsquove compiled my One Little Word into a traditional scrapbook book ndash plastic page protectors printed photos cute embellishments etchellip This year I wanted to explore using a journal to create my One Little Word documentation Meaning ndash I wanted to explore making an art or bullet journal instead of the same 6x8 3 ndashring binder Seems fitting to try something new given my word for 2020 is explore I love art I love to draw and paint I love messing with chalk and oil pastels Creating helps me decompress escape

That night I spent over 3 hours creating And I didnrsquot finish I havenrsquot written responses to my intention for the year ahead or what I hope to let go of All I did was create And it was so inspiring I drew flowers over the watercolor stamped phrases tore up fun paper to make a collage and simply played

I found myself praying Not the ldquoDear Godhelliprdquo sort of prayer but simply thinking about people situations I felt refreshed and renewed Actually I felt inspired and rejuvenated This is Sabbath Or at least what I believe Sabbath to be

As we head into Lent later this month I ponder more about spiritual disciplines I never get much out of meditating or even sitting alone and praying Devotions are wonderful in a group setting for me but on my own they fall flat I feel connected to God and pray more when Irsquom being creative And it fills my soul But thatrsquos me Thatrsquos not you You might enjoy meditating which is awesome Do it Especially if it connects you to God

Whatever brings you a connection to the Holy whatever spiritual discipline you find connects you to God ndash find and do it this Lent Because thatrsquos what Lent invites us to do (amongst other things) Sometimes we need something to take our mind off the everyday and connect us to all things Holy I pray yoursquore able to find that connection this Lent Peace Pastor Amanda

This month we will hear our Children and Youth choirs sing anthems about light Pretty typical for the Epiphany season but what does it mean for our children Think of a sun catcher The same light strikes the sun catcher but depending on the various prisms and angles of light the colors being reflected are different Our calling from God is similar God is the source of our light but each one of us will ultimately reflect different gifts that God has given us I know for a fact that one of my gifts is not drawing This became alarmingly clear when I was supposed to draw a lightbulb for one of our Disciple Zone groups Lucky for you there is no shred of evidence of that attempt and my lightbulb picture was bested by a 10 year old (thanks Ella) One of my gifts does happen to be music and Irsquom blessed to be able to share that gift with St Peterrsquos While working with our children and youth I am consistently inspired by their enthusiasm to share their light with the world around them They are excited to share the message that each of us is unique important and that we are never alone when we follow Jesus St Peterrsquos is blessed to have many people share their own gifts of music with our congregation week after week My guess is that there are even more of you out there So donrsquot hide your light under a bushel Let your unique sun catcher light shine with us Hear the Childrenrsquos Choir sing ldquoI Am the Lightrdquo on February 9th and the Youth Ensemble sing ldquoLiving in the Lightrdquo on February 16th There may even be some hymns with a ldquolightrdquo theme as well

How do I join E-mail or come see us any Sunday after church All are welcome Matthew Hogan matthewfhogangmailcom or Jennifer Petkus jenniferpetkusgmailcom

inistries From Jennifer Petkus I recently came across a fun way to use as a reminder to pray at all times of the day pet prayer rocks The concept is to place your pet rock in a location where you see it often and it reminds you to say a prayer During the first Disciple Zone of the new year our children made their own pet prayer rocks

Things like prayer reading the Bible worshipping God and going to church all help keep our hearts turned toward Jesus And when we turn our hearts to Jesus nothing can ever separate us from Godrsquos love

Page 6 Cornerstone Newsletter

This month we will hear our Children and Youth choirs sing anthems about light Pretty typical for the Epiphany season but what does it mean for our children Think of a sun catcher The same light strikes the sun catcher but depending on the various prisms and angles of light the colors being reflected are different Our calling from God is similar God is the source of our light but each one of us will ultimately reflect different gifts that God has given us I know for a fact that one of my gifts is not drawing This became alarmingly clear when I was supposed to draw a lightbulb for one of our Disciple Zone groups Lucky for you there is no shred of evidence of that attempt and my lightbulb picture was bested by a 10 year old (thanks Ella) One of my gifts does happen to be music and Irsquom blessed to be able to share that gift with St Peterrsquos While working with our children and youth I am consistently inspired by their enthusiasm to share their light with the world around them They are excited to share the message that each of us is unique important and that we are never alone when we follow Jesus St Peterrsquos is blessed to have many people share their own gifts of music with our congregation week after week My guess is that there are even more of you out there So donrsquot hide your light under a bushel Let your unique sun catcher light shine with us Hear the Childrenrsquos Choir sing ldquoI Am the Lightrdquo on February 9th and the Youth Ensemble sing ldquoLiving in the Lightrdquo on February 16th There may even be some hymns with a ldquolightrdquo theme as well

inistries From Jennifer Petkus I recently came across a fun way to use as a reminder to pray at all times of the day pet prayer rocks The concept is to place your pet rock in a location where you see it often and it reminds you to say a prayer During the first Disciple Zone of the new year our children made their own pet prayer rocks

Things like prayer reading the Bible worshipping God and going to church all help keep our hearts turned toward Jesus And when we turn our hearts to Jesus nothing can ever separate us from Godrsquos love
