Robert (Rob) Herhold was a fearless leader and inspiring friend to Epworth. Along with his wife, Jan, Rob first connected to Epworth in the early 2000’s through board member Marianne Fournie. Over the years, Jan and Rob have served the organization tirelessly. Rob was an integral part of the growth and success of Epworth - chairing the Board of Directors, countless hours of volunteer service, fulfilling Holiday Wishes, and serving as a proud ambassador in the community. One of Rob’s most notable gifts to Epworth was helping develop an organizational zeal for quality improvement.

Rob passed away in the winter of last year. During his final months, Rob and his family planned his service and final words. Rob’s generosity to Epworth continued beyond his lifetime and his memory endures as an investment in the future potential of each child served. Thank you to the many individuals who made gifts in Rob’s memory. We will miss this great man and cherish the time we had in his company.

“Losing Rob was not only a loss for his immediate family, but for the thousands of families and individuals served through his support of Epworth.”

Jan Herhold, Robert’s wife

Karen and Loren, Corey’s parents, sought out Epworth thinking their programs would be therapeutic and challenging for their son. Karen thought Epworth would be a good source of support and would help Corey succeed in life.

After working with Epworth staff to develop a plan for success, Corey started with Epworth’s Special Education School. “The staff designed a curriculum program to fit Corey’s learning needs precisely,” said Karen. “They were assisting him by implementing learning strategies that increased classroom success.”

With the coping skills Corey was taught inside Epworth’s encouraging walls, he was finally able to show his warm and genuine nature. Within one year, Corey successfully completed the first portion of the program.

Karen said the staff at Epworth made a profound impact on Corey. Genica Chairs, a licensed therapist, mentored her son and still calls him periodically to see how he’s doing. Cindy Cramer, Epworth’s English teacher, helped with a priceless gift - she helped him embrace a love of reading.

“Cindy and Corey really clicked and Corey began to pick up reading,” said Karen. “Cindy would go out of her way to buy him books that she thought he would enjoy reading. “

Many of Epworth’s staff took an interest in Corey and supported his journey. Keith Harvey, a physical education coach, helped Corey fall in love with basketball. The pair would shoot hoops and chat about everyday life while on the court.

During Corey’s time at Epworth, Karen said he most enjoyed being in the gym. Corey loved playing basketball and working with the younger kids. Whether it was helping them read or participating in projects, Corey was there.

“The younger kids really looked up to Corey,” Karen said. “He was their role model and they wanted to do everything with him. During summer school one year, the children held boat races in Epworth’s swimming pool and Corey helped them build their cardboard boat. All the kids wanted Corey to be the captain and drive the boat, but being 6’10’ and a heavier kid, the boat wasn’t going to make it to the end. But Corey hopped in the cardboard boat anyway and, as predicted, the boat was underwater. The kids loved his enthusiasm and willingness to do anything.”

In June 2014, Corey transitioned out of Epworth and enrolled in public high school full time. He is now 16 and a Junior at Troy Buchanan High School. At his new school, Corey takes the skills he developed for basketball at Epworth to the court as part of their basketball team. He also plays football and enjoys spending time with friends.

Corey’s mom hopes to see him attend a technical school. He loves being on the computer and says he can’t wait to enroll in a local college to study computer programming or gaming.

“With the help of Epworth, I feel like I can succeed in anything,” said Corey. “I’ve met so many great people through the two years of being at this organization who I know will support me and continue to help me strive for my goals.”

Corey works to maintain focus and break through obstacles using skills learned at Epworth. He looks forward to his future and all that it holds. Corey was encouraged to find strength at Epworth to build a brighter future. Now he has the tools he needs to succeed and a smile that will take him a long way.

Sue and Irl Engelhardt have a history of charitable giving. After many years of philanthropy, they wanted to create a more organized approach to their efforts. Being brilliant financial minds – both MBA’s – they wanted the personal tax benefits along with the satisfaction of charitable giving. They also wanted the financial growth that a foundation would provide for the recipients of their donations. It was in 2006 that The Engelhardt Family Foundation began with a focus on their own passions for the arts, education and health. One of its key crtiteria for giving is to truly make a difference in the lives of its recipients.

Being strong role models, they instilled a sense of philanthropy in their children from a young age to create the next generation of Engelhardt donors. Their daughter, Erin, feels very fortunate to have her parent’s guidance and says, “It was never a question of whether generosity was a part of our lives.” Erin was taught to never take any of her privileges for granted, “and we don’t because we know how hard others have to work for them.” Erin understands just how far a donation goes for someone that is helped by Epworth Children & Family Services.

The first time The Engelhardt Family Foundation supported Epworth was when Erin was going through the college application process. It was overwhelming, with over a dozen essays and a spreadsheet to manage each school’s application requirements. Sue stopped and thought, “Some kids don’t even have computers, how are they ever going to get through the complicated, automated application process for college?” It was this process that was the impetus for a grant to provide college counseling support for Epworth youth.

The Engelhardts know there are children and families in St. Louis that may not have an opportunity for a brighter future without the emotional, educational and living support that Epworth provides. For Sue, “The very act of giving is such a fulfilling thing… It is just so rewarding. What you give means much more than what you would get for yourself.” And Erin agrees: “It is my passion to give back,” she says, which is why she now manages the family foundation.

The passion for giving back doesn’t just stop with the Engelhardts and their foundation. Erin has used her experience donating to nonprofits and her knowledge of social services in St. Louis to support her career in medicine, “The Foundation has given me so much knowledge about what is available to families that I have suggested opportunities for my patients.”

For Erin and Sue, and the rest of the Engelhardt family, they believe you don’t have to have a lot of money to give back. “In fact,” Sue says, “just giving your time, your most important asset, is valuable. Those that give their time are the real heros for an organization.” With The Engelhardt Family Foundation’s support, Epworth works with individuals to meet goals to become independent, to live a happy life and be able to provide for themselves and a family. By doing this, the Engelhardts know the entire community benefits. Sue states, “I think what Epworth teaches is more than just education, it is life lessons.” Life lessons that Irl and Sue hope they have instilled in the next generation of their own family.

Tribute GiftsThank You Tribute Gifts recognize, honor, and celebrate the

passions and beliefs of individuals and groups. For each Tribute gift received, Epworth will send a card

acknowledging the donor and the individual who the gift recognizes. We invite you to consider a donation to Epworth in celebration or acknowledgement of those who have had impact on your life – knowing your gift

makes an impact on those Epworth serves.

Why did you choose the field you work in?I started studying education, and realized that it wasn’t for me. But I wanted to change teenagers’ lives so I studied youth ministry at John Brown University. I want to be the person who makes an impact – to help people understand they may start from a hard place, but they can go somewhere way different.

What made you choose to work at Epworth? When I went in for the interview, everything they explained about the position was everything I had dreamed of. It was the street outreach that was a plus.

Where do you do your work?We spend a lot of time in the community, but the Drop-in Center in Normandy is home base.

How do homeless youth find you?We go out into the streets and pass out flyers, contact information cards and talk directly with youth living on the streets. We post contact information in laundry mats and gas stations. Wherever we think youth will be, we try to put information.

What does your typical day at work look like? After I check email and the phones, I start getting supplies together. We then take the van out into the community – usually downtown – to do “pick-ups” from places where homeless youth congregate. We bring them to the Drop-in Center so they can get food, showers, look for jobs… then we head back out with our supplies to reach more youth living on the streets. But our days fluctuate. That is a typical day, but there are others where we will go to meetings that help youth determine their options as they leave foster care. We will go to schools to educate the community on our services. I also run our LGBTQ youth group every other Wednesday. We really just try to spread the word about what Epworth offers.

When you say “supplies” – what are those? We have snack packs – little bags of chips, Easy Mac, juice boxes, water, sandwich crackers – just something easy kids can eat. It may not fill them up, but it will sustain them for a day or two. We will also bring hygiene kits – shampoo and soap, feminine products. In the winter, we pack the van with hats and coats.

Where do these supplies come from? All of it comes from donations. We do get some of the food for our snack packs from St. Louis Food Bank, but most of the time it is just donations that people give Epworth.

A day at Epworth as…A Street Outreach Worker

Crystal Schlereth has had a passion for helping homeless youth since she was 18 years old. When a friend began working for Epworth, she looked into her own opportunities with the Agency. On November 18, 2013, Crystal joined Epworth’s Street Outreach Team. Her passion had become a dream career.

What is your favorite part of the job?Probably meeting the different youth and hearing their stories. Seeing how some can go from down-and-out to getting a shelter placement, and then grow and expand into a successful individual.

What is the most difficult or frustrating part of the job?Ugh! Not being able to find a place for a homeless youth! Sometimes all the youth shelters are full and I am not able to do what I want to help them. It is something out of my control and that is the most difficult.

Why do you think you can relate so well to the youth we serve?Probably because I have been in similar situations. I understand what it’s like to have to find a place to stay. I was considered at-risk of being homeless when I was a teenager. I lived with friends, I lived with my grandma until I was 19 and I bounced around a lot. Especially through college – I didn’t have my own steady place until I was 22. I think I also relate because I show them you can accomplish what you want, you may just need to work a little harder to get it. I tell them, it just takes a little more effort, but it’s not impossible.

What do you like to do during your time off?Oh, my time off! I go to concerts, different art shows… dancing is one of my favorite things. And sports games!

What is one thing that people may not know about you? That’s kind of hard – I pretty much share everything! I think a lot of people at Epworth don’t realize that I play guitar. And that I have recorded an EP and write my own music.

Volunteering at Epworth comes in many forms. Some volunteers choose to mentor or tutor our residential youth. Others assist with fundraising events, yard work or painting our facilities. The opportunities range from a few hours to a full year. But many of our volunteers, like Classic Red Hots Catering, come to us with a new opportunity that treats our youth to something extra special.

When Steve Cori decided he needed to get involved with the community, he chose Epworth as his starting point. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Steve has an incredible passion for Chicago-style food. It was 22 years ago that he brought his passion to St. Louis and opened a restaurant, serving Chicago-style sandwiches and more. But it was the catering side of his business that really took off and prompted him to focus on that full time.

Steve decided that providing Chicago-style hotdogs might be a big hit with Epworth residents. “We have the tools, the equipment and the product, so there is no excuse not to!”

This past summer was the first time Classic Red Hots Catering visited Epworth. Steve came to the Webster Groves location, which houses residential programs for 45 youth. His Chicago-style hotdog catering cart was such a great hit that Steve decided to bring the same service to Epworth’s homeless youth Drop-In Center in Normandy.

Many opted for seconds of Steve’s classic dogs—and some went for thirds! When asked what the most popular choice of the day was, Steve grimaced, “Just ketchup. And that is so wrong! But that is part of the Chicago-style dog learning process.” Steve says the traditional (and the ONLY) way to enjoy this treat is loaded with mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, pickles, peppers and celery salt on a steamed poppy seed bun. His ingredients come straight from Chicago.

When asked what the best part of volunteering at Epworth is, Steve said, “Watching a young person enjoy a Chicago dog the way it was designed over 100 years ago. Fully loaded – minus ketchup.” And whether Epworth’s youth enjoyed a dog fully loaded, or just with ketchup, they left full of food and full of appreciation for Steve’s innovative volunteer idea.

Want to try one of Classic Red Hots Catering’s Chicago-style dogs? You can find Steve (or his co-worker Mary) at The Home Depot in Chesterfield at 390 THF Blvd. or follow them on Facebook to see where they will be next. Be prepared for a line at lunchtime!

Volunteersare at the Heart of Epworth

Tell me about your educational background.I went to the University of Central Missouri, studied criminal justice and got my Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice. I’m now in my last couple months of my Master’s program.

Why did you choose the field you work in?Well, it started off in college. I took a juvenile justice class and I always wanted to be a police officer; that was my main goal. Then I realized the kids needed help. They need somebody to look up to, somebody to understand them. So I received a job at DYS, Division of Youth Services, where I work full-time. Then I saw this opening at Epworth for outreach and filled out the application. I thought, “Wow, let me get my experience, working two jobs with the youth.” Then it branched off [and] I made my own foundation, BrothaKeeperSTL. I work throughout schools of inner city St. Louis. It’s going great and everything I do is around youth and I love it. Check out BrothaKeeperSTL.vpweb.com (laughs)!

What made you choose to work at Epworth? The different environment it had, a residential community. Epworth is a great environment for the youth.

Where at Epworth do you do your work?I normally work in Shoe, Shoemaker dorm, in Webster Groves. But I usually work all around, wherever they need me.

Tell me the first thing you do in the morning when you arrive at work.First thing I do, I clock in then I’ll go grab the bus and warm it up for the kids who go on to school. Then I go into the cafeteria and wait till all the kids arrive, eat breakfast and we send them off to school.

Tell me about a typical day at work.A typical day is really calm because I work the mornings. You really just relax and if they need advice for anything, we talk about it and sit at the back table of the unit. We talk about life, if they need advice and just basically how their day’s going; a lot of simple conversation.

What have the youth here at Epworth taught you?Patience, I learn a lot about patience.

What’s your favorite part of the job? It’s simple - being around the youth. You know, having somebody for them to look up to, that’s my favorite part.

What is the most difficult or frustrating part of the job?Do I have any? I have to think about it. There is no frustrating part about the job really, it’s relaxed. Well, when kids tend to act out, it becomes frustrating but it usually doesn’t happen here. It’s really a calm environment.

How do you feel you are building brighter futures for youth and families in our community?I have a sense of self-satisfaction with this job. It’s not about the money. It is about this young boy: a young boy came to me yesterday and said, “Loni, let me talk to you about something, let me get some big brother advice,“ and I stopped everything I was doing to talk to him. Just giving simple advice, that’s what the kids need. When I was younger, I needed that big brother to help me out, or that father figure and I didn’t have that. So I reached out into the streets and that was a rough period of my life.

What do you like to do on your time off?My time off? I like to work out and hang with friends and family, basically. And be with my brothers and sisters. Enjoy the time I didn’t get to have when I was younger with them. And just be a mentor for them as well, so I’m a mentor 24/7.

What’s one thing people may not know about you?Everybody thinks I’m a very talkative person and I’m not; I’m an introvert. I’m a loner at heart. I can have a whole lot of friends and I go out. But the best times I have is when I’m alone, thinking, working out, in the steam room, that’s when I connect with myself.

FRIENDS OF EPWORTH

Corey today at 16 years old

4/15

Remember the person whose smile can wash away even the worst day? Corey Rasbury has that smile. When Corey was 14, it wasn’t always easy for him to find ways to share that smile. He had behavioral and discipline problems that affected his education. Corey’s teacher believed he wasn’t being challenged enough in his grade level. She referred Corey’s parents to Epworth Children & Family Services.
