The European Athletics federation have thisweek hosted a seminar onboard the luxuryfloating hotel the Sunborn in Gibraltar.

The European Athletic Association (alsoknown as European Athletics) is the govern-ing body for athletics in Europe. The associ-ation consists of 51 national members andis one of six Area Associations of theworld's athletics governing body, the Inter-national Association of Athletics Federations(IAAF).

Svein Arne Hansen its current president metwith Minister Steven Linares and GAAAChairman Frank Carreras where they held apress conference together.

Hansen welcomed the fact that the seminarhad been held in Gibraltar, pointing out theimportance of Gibraltar as one of the 51 na-tional members within the association'sranks.

Whilst congratulating Gibraltar on its facili-ties he did nevertheless point out that in dis-cussions with Sports Minister Linares he hadbeen promised that a new track would be fit-ted in the very near future as part of theoverall upgrading of facilities in order to holdthe Small Island Games in Gibraltar. He fur-ther added that his biggest pleasure was theinvestment that existed in sports facilities,

pointing out that whilst other cities were bigthey did not have some of the facilities thatexisted in Gibraltar.

Significantly the European Athletics presi-dent pointed out that Gibraltar, who was al-ready due to host the Island Games in 2019,should aspire to host athletics meets at aEuropean level, suggesting that its presentfacilities could cater for Youth championship, third division or even junior championships.Claiming there was a potential for meetingsin Gibraltar as it already had a good stadiumadding "Please apply."

Asked by the local press if he would backGibraltar's application Hansen said that hewould. His response seemingly getting thenod of approval from both the Chairman ofthe GAAA and Minister for Sports who wereat the press conference as he made his re-marks.

Gibraltar Hockey Told SpanishActions Outside EuropeanHockeys RemitThe Gibraltar Hockey Association havetonight commented publicly to reports thatthe Spanish Hockey Federation has warnedSpanish clubs they will be sanctioned if theyplay against Gibraltar sides, play with play-ers from Gibraltar or play in Gibraltar. In a statement issued this evening theystate:- “Please see below Press release onbehalf of the Gibraltar Hockey Association. In December 2015 the GHA received vari-ous emails from our contacts in Andaluciawhich had been sent to them by the SpanishHockey Federation (“RFEH”) the text ofwhich is set out below.

In brief, the RFEH claimed to have beencontacted by the EHF who noted thatmatches involving Andalucian and Gibraltar-ian clubs were being played in Gibraltar andSpain.

They further sent a memo from the consejosuperior de deportes banning all sportingcontact with Gibraltar also set out below andthreatening sanctions for non compliance. The GHA immediately referred this matterto the EHF who undertook to investigate. Inbrief their findings are the following :

1. The EHF categorically deny notifying theRFEH of any matches being played involv-ing Gibraltarian and Spanish clubs.

2. The EHF support the efforts and cooper-ation between Gibraltar Hockey and Andalu-cia Hockey and fully encourage therelationship to continue to grow.

3. Unfortunately, the below is a National

measure imposed by the consejo superiorde deportes on it’s sporting associations andoutside of the remit of the EHF.

4. The EHF hopes the matter is resolvedsoon and Gibraltarian and Andalucian clubscontinue to enjoy their traditional sportingfriendship.

In addition we are aware that several clubsin Andalucia are lobbying their local authori-ties to tackle this issue, which also has sig-nificant consequences for them. They arefully aware that they have been misled bythe RFEH as no notification was made bythe EHF. We suspect that the visit of theEHF President to Gibraltar in October mayhave triggered this action by the Consejo /RFEH in retaliation for the press coveragethat it attracted.

We will provide further updates in duecourse. ”

The latest manifestations bythe Spanish Hockey Federa-tion against Gibraltar hockeyhas come as a reality checkto the sporting community inGibraltar, one which high-lights that it cannot sit on itslaurels for too long and getcomfortable as Spain will mixpolitics with sports, deliber-

ately.

As the President of theGibraltar Hockey Associationhas highlighted the lateststream of events whilst tar-geting hockey, mainly due tothe simple fact it’s the Span-ish Hockey Federation thathas issued the warnings, the

fact is that the SpanishHockey Federation has onlyrepeated the Consejo Supe-rior de Deportes globalwarnings to ALL sporting bod-ies, clubs, associations andorganisation over the partici-pation of Gibraltarians, orGibraltar related entities orevents alongside Spanish

entities or events.

Coincidentally, as someobservers point out, the warn-ings coming at a time when

1) The European HockeyAssociation President hadvisited Gibraltar when Span-ish clubs were participating inGibraltar

2) This also highlighting thatGibraltarians were involved inthe active participation of thesport in Spain, as individualplayers,

3) just weeks before a Span-ish General Election in whichthe Governing party at thetime, the PP, had been pre-dicted to be in a weakposition.

This has led many to believethat warnings, which have notbeen acted upon previouslyalthough in existence, were adeliberate manifestation ofpolitical discontent and anattempt to pacify the politicalarm by being seem to havetaken some sort of action.

The news comes as little sur-prise to the sports fraternityas it is not the first, or proba-bly the last time that suchactions have been seen,Football, Athletics, Rugbyand now hockey have allbeen affected in the decadeslong of battles where politicshas been mixed with sport.Where Spanish federationshave campaigned againstGibraltar within the interna-tional sports arena, pressured and influenced by

Spain's political arm.

Yet, it is not an insurmount-able battle.

Football proved that whilstSpain might continue mixingsport with politics a concertedcampaign can overcomeobstacles, as was provedwhen Gibraltar, against Span-ish wishes, and againstSpain's campaign against it,were accepted into UEFAafter decades waiting.

As far back as 1999 suc-cesses against Spanishpolitical campaigns againstGibraltar's sportsmen andwomen can be seen.

minton, boxing, cricket, hockey, ju jitsu, squash andtable tennis) after a call fromthen athlete Paul Ignacio, tocampaign jointly followingthe difficulties encountered byathlete Liam Byrne and thenGAAA chairman, FreddieChappory, when theyattended the InternationalAthletics Championships heldin Seville.

The results was that Gibraltargained the support from theAthletics community witheven the prestigious GB teamstanding side by side withGibraltarian athletes. Suchwas the success that thisvery week the European Ath-letics Association committeeheld their seminar in Gibral-tar, and have even indicatedthat Gibraltar could host, if it

wished and with their support,European championshipmeetings at youth or juniorlevel. The only factor theywere taking into accountbeing the facilities, and notthe politics.

Spain's campaign againstGibraltar has resulted innumerous occasions in whichGibraltar has been denied thesame level playing field to bea part of the global sportingcommunity at various sport-ing levels, or sports.

Gibraltar Rugby is one of theclearest examples of theCSD's campaign againstGibraltar's sporting fraternity. In its own website, and datingback to 2013 the CSD con-gratulates the Spanish Rugbyfederation for its success in

blocking Gibraltar Rugby'sentry into the European Asso-ciation. It describes acampaign which was aimedat influencing the vote againstGibraltar, who althoughobtaining the majority votewere unable to becomemembers as they did notreach the required number ofvotes to enter. The meremention, in an article in theCSD's own official website ofthis fact highlights the impor-tance placed by the politicalarm of Spanish sports ineffectively trying to indiscrim-inately stop Gibraltar'ssporting people from practis-ing their sport freely as part oftheir sovereignty campaign toregain Gibraltar and not allowits development as a "nation".

flaws, and even in hockeythey have been found vulner-able to the very fact thatSpain proclaims itself as ademocracy and therefore itsown laws can prevent themfrom enacting the warningsthey have issued. Flawswhich have been tested bysporting bodies more thanwilling to ignore the politicsand merely continue downthe sporting route.

Not only have Gibraltarianplayers registered with Span-ish teams in recent months, they have played in Spanishleagues, not just in hockey, but in Football, Athletics andRugby. Sports lawyers repre-senting some Spanish clubshave questioned the regula-tions and demonstrated that

they cannot be enforcedupon individuals. WhilstSpain has been able to blockteams from playing friendlymatches against Gibraltarianteams, through threats morethan legitimate action, theyhave not been able to stopthe registration of Gibraltariansportspeople in events inSpain or Spanish leagueswhen representing Spanishclubs. The very nature of thediscriminatory nature of theregulations have been raisedand have seen clubs takingon and supporting Gibraltar-ian players within their ranks.

Even their attempt to stop allcontact with Gibraltar's sportshas failed where even in foot-ball there has been friendlymatches taking place

between regional clubs andGibraltarian clubs, even thewomen's national team. Themost recent announcementmade at the end of the yearthat a selection from Gibraltarwill participate in a friendlymatch against San Roque, inSpain. Rare though it's beenGibraltarian footballers haveventured to play in Spain. Most recently, the transfermarket itself has seen aninflux of Spanish players, reg-istered in Spain, moving toclubs in Gibraltar, directlyfrom Spanish clubs.

Similar occurrences exist inother sports such as basket-ball where a Gibraltarianplays in the Spanish leagues, and tennis where a Gibraltar-ian is actively participating

tournaments in Spain.

The Consejo Superior deDeportes instructions, whilsta major threat to the aspira-tions of good relationsbetween Gibraltar sports bod-ies and Spanish sportsbodies is not somethingwhich even sports organisa-tions in Spain support. InDecember, and one of thereasons for Spain's latest out-burst, was the visit from twoSpanish regional clubs toGibraltar, to participate in amini tournament, which wasvisited by the EuropeanHockey President.

Flying the Spanish flag, alongside the Gibraltar flagfrom the Victoria Stadium, and both teams in full knowl-

edge that their presence inGibraltar was not acceptableto CSD eyes, the tournamentwent ahead with playersundeterred. It was a clearaction of unity among sportsbodies from both sides of theborder, a unity which ifexpanded upon could lead tothe total rejection of theSpanish political arms inter-ference in sports relations.

At least two Andalusian clubshave also enlisted Gibraltar-ian players into their teams, this done at the same timethe warnings were issued, and with the knowledge in atleast one case that the politi-cal arm of Spanish sportswas not in approval of thisfact.

Whilst the European HockeyFederation has this weekbeen revealed not to have aremit to stop Spanish policiesagainst Gibraltar at a nationallevel, due to the fact that theyare based on a national pol-icy which they can implementin Spain. Their rulings againstindividuals and clubs whenplaying at official internationaltournaments cannot be read-ily enforced.

Whilst they can stop friendlymatches from taking place inSpain, by imposing the threatof disciplinary and fiscal pun-ishments, the SpanishFederation would find it diffi-cult to implement their rulingon matches played outsidetheir territory as they have nomandate or jurisdiction to

impose such bans. Theseare the views of manysports observers who areclosely monitoring the lat-est events relating tohockey.

Coresportgib, furtherunderstands that theirpolicies, after beingreviewed by sportslawyers in Spain support-ing Gibraltarian playersalready playing in Spain, cannot be enforced onindividuals as it would bediscriminatory against theindividual.

The registration of at leastthree Gibraltarians inSpanish regional leaguesis seen as highlightingsuch a fact. The players, who are already plyingtheir sport in Spain, havebeen officially accepted toparticipate in Spanishleagues, this being atrend which has beenseen on numerous occa-sions, even though theConsejo Superior deDeportes instructionsdate back decades.

This very week, Cores-portgib, understands thewarnings are to be testedwith at least one clubmaking direct representa-tions to find out what theactual position is in rela-tion to their registeredplayer. The player inquestion, who has askedto remain unnamed forthe time being, alreadyscheduled to play both at

a regional and interna-tional level for his clubwithin the coming weeks, having already playedleague and tournamentmatches for his club.

The European Hockey'sposition on the matter, atinternational levels isalready seemingly clear.Their latest commentsshows that whilst theycannot act on nationalbodies decision withintheir own country, at aninternational level theyare not participants of thedecision. This was offi-cially demonstrated whenearlier this month Gibral-tarian officials weregrouped with Spanishofficials for forthcomingtournaments, with theadded likelihood that theirtop umpire, who happensto be from Gibraltar, mightofficiate finals in whichSpain itself might be oneof the participants.

As one local hockey offi-cial indicated toCoresportgib only thisweek whilst the Europeanbody cannot act onnational policies, there issupport within the Span-ish sporting fraternity tostep forward and chal-lenge the policies, in thesame manner somesporting bodies, clubsand associations havealready done across amultitude of sporting plat-forms.

Paul Ignacio, former Road Racing championin Gibraltar and who in 1999 led a campaignthat saw all sports bodies in Gibraltar uniteand the Great Britain Athletics teams supporta campaign to stop Spain from stopping aGibraltarian from competing in the WorldChampionships has called for sports bodiesin Gibraltar to once again join forces to cam-paign against Spain's continued policiesagainst Gibraltar's sports men and women.

In 1999 Ignacio launched a campaign whichsaw most main sporting bodies in Gibraltarjoin forces to lobby their international organ-isations to support a Gibraltarian athletefrom competing in the World Championshipsin Seville. The campaign led to members ofthe Great Britain team standing in full sup-port of the athlete, even indicating that theywould remove themselves if the athlete was

not allowed to compete.

The campaign itself opened some newdoors to new relations being gained not justat an international level, but also at a re-gional level as sports bodies from evenSpain ventured to challenge Spanish politi-cal manifestations in sport and insteadforged better relations with sports in Gibral-tar. Doors which had already been openedin some quarters but were further re-openedas the campaign took an international per-spective.

Speaking to Coresportgib this week PaulIgnacio was asked to comment on the latestwarnings issued by Spain over Gibraltar'shockey.

Spain must be reminded ofthis at Sporting level. Withthe current attitude takenby the Spanish HockeyFederation, Politiciansshould keep away theyshould just protest and nottake further action, the Eu-ropean Federation can in-vestigate as they wish thequestion is will Spain re-spect the decision if theyfound to be on contraven-tion of any rule for discrim-ination. All I would say isin parallel locally we mustthrough all sporting asso-ciations and bodies link upwith our counterparts andcolleagues and urge themto stand up to Sportsshould have No Frontiers,Sports should not allowPolitical interference de-spite race, colour or na-tionality .

Back in 1999 when Spaindecided yet again preventa local athlete to competein a World Championshipwe reached out to ourcounterparts in UK and inturn other European coun-terparts lobbied about thewrongful action, Spainwas exposed again wecame through our athleteparticipated. The SpanishHockey Federation mightsuggest they will take ac-tion against those that goagainst their direction sowhat Clubs/Players give into this intimidation, stand-ing united and getting

sport across a wide spec-trum will create the soli-darity to show up theFederation and give thosethat want to enjoy a gamewith us or make us part oftheir team feel they are notalone on this one we standup to THE FEDERATION asONE. SPORTS WITHOUTFRONTIERS"

Similar calls have beenmade from local sports bod-ies and individuals who havehighlighted that any cam-paign to proactively counterSpain's policies againstGibraltar's sporting fraternityrequires the support fromSpanish counterparts.

The call for SPORTS WITH-OUT FRONTIERS has seenother local sports bodies andpersonalities express theirsupport for all sports bodiesto join together and proac-tively campaign as one, with-out the influence orinterference from politics.

James Parody, also a for-mer athlete who in 1999was also part of the cam-paign group when askedto comment on Paul Igna-cio's call for unity ex-pressed his support forthe initiative stating " Ihave always said Sportsand Politics shouldn't mixbut in my opinion those in-volved in politics shouldsupport the sports menand women without ex-

pecting anything in returnSpanish politics have al-ways been against Gibral-tar being recognized as anindependent Sporting or-ganization so what hashappened to the GibraltarHockey association isnothing new but I agree allsporting associations inGibraltar should unite andgather support includingfrom their Spanish coun-terparts to support ourright to participate and berecognized as a team rep-resenting Gibraltar be it asan individual, a independ-ent team or the Nationalteam"

The call for unity, whichCoresportgib also posted onits facebook page has seennumerous sporting individu-als and entities already stepforward voicing their supportpublicly.

Gibraltar United keeperGoldwyn speaking toCoresportgib said "Sportsand politics shouldn't mixin my opinion whether itshockey, football, basket-ball or any other sport!Sports is something thatshould be enjoyed byeveryone regardless ofyour nationality! Sportsbrings people together."Most significantly, thefootball fraternity steppedforward immediately tooffer their support.

Dennis Beiso, General Sec-retary of the Gibraltar Foot-ball Association added hisimmediate support behindthe Gibraltar Hockey Associ-ation and calls for a unitedfront from all sporting bodiesto campaign against theSpanish Hockey Federationsban on Gibraltar Hockey.

Responding to Coresportgibrequest to comment onwhether the GFA would com-ment on a call for unity Den-nis Beiso, General Secretaryof the GFA did not hesitate todemonstrate his support.

In an official statement bythe Gibraltar Football As-sociation it states " TheGibraltar FA has takennote of the statement is-sued yesterday by theGibraltar Hockey Associa-tion in relation to theSpanish Hockey Federa-tion's prohibition (appar-ently followinginstructions from theSpanish Government'sConsejo Superior de De-portes) on all forms ofsporting contact betweenSpanish and Gibraltarianhockey teams.

The Gibraltar FA places onrecord its total support forthe Gibraltar Hockey Asso-ciation in its efforts to getthe European Hockey Fed-eration to redress this un-acceptable situation and

thus ensure that the Euro-pean hockey family, ofwhich the GHA has beenan integral and proud partfor many years, remainsfree from any type of polit-ical interference."

Affecting all sports Cores-portsgib asked one of Gibral-tar's top swimmers JonathanCruz who also added hisvoice to calls of unity, com-menting to Coresportgib, that like in 1999 he wouldsupport any such campaignwhere sportsmen andwomen come together andproactively continue thecampaign together to allowGibraltar's sports men andwomen to participate in sportwithout the interference frompolitics.

Coresportgib, for its partsupports the call for a unitedfront.

Editor Stephen Ignaciocommenting, "The call fora SPORTS WITHOUTFRONTIERS campaign, where all sporting bodies, including those which canbe gathered from outsideGibraltar is one whichlocal sporting bodiesshould consider carefully.

Politics has no place insports, but it’s the sports-men and women fromGibraltar and Spain whomust unite as one and

demonstrate that sports isabove politics. It does notmatter what our politicaldifferences are, or whatour national differencesare we cannot allow thereto be an "aparthied" insport purely on thegrounds of a historicalclaim over a territorywhich has gone over 300years without a shift inpostures. This is anAparthied in sports, andthe sports communityaround the world must re-alise, but only those inSpain can really effectchange by challenging it.And we must be willing tosupport them if they do, inwhich ever form or way wehave to, but importantlywe must show open armsto our sports colleagues inSpain to show we are notfighting them, but the poli-tics which interfere. Wewould like to see oursports bodies and organi-sations meeting to discussways ahead for all sportsto benefit from a concertedeffort, and as part of themedia industry, we wouldcall on all the media tooffer their support to pro-mote the idea of SPORTSWITHOUT FRONTIERS.”

Having lost 6-0 to Glacis only seven daysbefore, and with not one single point gainedsince the New Year Lions were out to prove thatthey were still far from finished.

The first half saw Lions take possession of theball keeping Britannia within most of the firsthalf. The latter only making a few rare runsforward as Lions dominated play.

It was in one of this Britannia breaks forwardthat a clearance from the Lions defence caughtBritannia's defence out. With the ball takenforward onto goal and struck home by RomeroJimenez as they approached the first 30minutes.

The match remained unchanged by the goal

with Britannia only stridingforward on long passes andbreaks.

The second half saw a changein tune as Britannia pressedforward, this time with Lionspinned back into their own area.Britannia, nevertheless had fewchances at goal. Their fortunesalso turning for the worse whenRisto Kago received a direct redcard. Something that even theBritannia keeper was not happyabout shouting out "not again, every single game," referring tothe number of times the sameplayer had been send off duringthe season.

Even down to ten men,Britannia remained for most ofthe second half with the mainpossession of the ball. Theirprodding at Lions defenceresulting in few chances as thematch became a dull frenetic, hard tackling affair in the centreof the field.

It was not until around the lastten minutes, that the tired legsof Britannia felt the absence ofthat extra man. Lions strodeforward using the flanks as away to break down the Britanniadefence. The latter's keeper, who had not really been tested, was called upon to come out ofhis box on several occasions toclear the danger with his feet. Inone of these clearances he wasseen controlling the ball with hisarm, an action the officialsmissed.

Lions win takes them to fourthplace whilst Britannia drop downto 5th.

Lynx latestvictim ofGlacis

Lynx latestvictim ofGlacis If there was any doubts in people'sminds that Glacis United's six nilvictory was just a blip in the firstdivision scope, Glacis were out toprove otherwise in their clash withLynx.

Lynx tipped at the start of the seasonto be amongst the top four, came intothe match knowing that Lions, with asimilar record to them had beenhumiliated by a refreshed Glacissquad, hammered six nil last Monday.Lynx themselves have brought in newsignings who proved invaluable lastweek to get all three points againstGibraltar United.

The Glacis v Lynx match was to see

the small crowd, some two hundredpeople, excited as both teams offeredend to end action, with very littlebetween the two, except for thepresence of newly signed number 24Lopez. The front man was to becomethe star of the match as he torethrough the Lynx defence, causing allkinds of problems. The first attack came from Lynx whowon a corner. Javi Chicodemonstrating early on he was athreat from set pieces, putting the balljust over the crossbar as he took thecorner.

Glacis responded immediately withtheir own attack, with Barletta seeinghis shot saved by Gibraltar national

keeper Robba.

The match went from end to endwith Lynx piling the pressure onGlacis defence only to see the twoGlacis Ruescas, Pineda andPuertas, clear everything thrown atthem, cancelling out RobertGuilings threat down the flank. Glacis newly refreshed frontline, including Lopez, Barletta andCortes Narvaez once againcombined to tear down theoppositions flanks with quickflowing counterattacking widepasses and runs into the defenceover and over again.

After numerous chances at bothends the first half ended indeadlock.

The second half saw Lynx lean onGlacis defence, taking back mostof the initial possession andcontrol, something Glacis seemedcontent to allow as they continuedto plunge forward with their owncounter attacks. The second halfseeing only Lopez staying up frontthroughout. This proved to be aheadache to Lynx's defences as heconsistently prodded their defence, running at every ball, with severalattempts at goal as he wonpossession or forced open gapswhich were then filled by his owncolleagues supporting his forwardruns.

It was in one of this counters that

Glacis went ahead. Entering the 50thminute mark Lynx were caught out whenLopez intercepted a pass pushing the ballto Tirado who was running unmarked onthe right. A quick pass back from Tirado toLopez as the Lynx defenders were caughtout left Lopez on a one on one againstRobba inside the penalty area. Lopezcurled the ball around the oncoming Robbaand to the near post as the latter came outto block.

With Glacis one nil ahead Lynx pushedforward, only to see Lopez make anotherbreak within minutes, this time getting ayellow card for allegedly diving as he wastackled inside the penalty area.

With Lynx looking for a goal, and Guilinghaving been effectively zone marked out ofthe match by Glacis defence, Parody madea change bringing on Akrapovic on the65th minute. The latter's first touch endedin a miscued shot at goal from just outsidethe area. Within seconds Glacis were luckynot to concede as a cross from a foulended with goalkeeper Carlin beaten andRuesca Pineda clearing off the line. As Lynx continued to press forward, onceagain Lopez proved to be a nemesis, breaking free onto goal, once again on aone on one with Robba, his strike this timecoming off the post.

Glacis continued for the rest of the matchabsorbing the pressure at the back, leavingLopez alone upfront to cause havoc onLynx's defence on counter, as the rest ofthe team kept a tight defensive position. As the whistle blew for full time the Glacisbench jumped in jubilation celebrating as ifthey had won a cup final. A 1-0 win againstLynx was considered a major milestone fora team whose season had started withouta single victory in the first ten matches.

Europa saw their season'shopes of a place in theChampions League first roundqualifiers fade even further asthey stumbled to Manchester 62for a one all draw, bringing theirtally to five points lost in Januaryalone.

Europa's fortunes were turnedwhen their defensive midfielderIvan Moya was sent off afterdeemed to have struck Shaun deLos Santos with his flailing arm.Europa who had most of thepossession in the first part of thegame, bombarded Manchester62's area and controlled themidfield possession from thestart. The departure of Moya sawthem re-organise themselves.Javi Martinez, who had beenbreaking through the flanksmoved into the centre for a whileas they reformed their lines.Later returning to his flank afterthe half time break.

Manchester with the one manadvantage still found it difficult ingetting back possession, theirdefensive duo of Sergeant andHoesken clearing the dangerand keeping command at theback as Europa demonstrated

their physical strength inmaintaining the pressure on.

Manchester seemed to have optedto absorb the pressure from thestart of the match, using longpasses and breaking runs to causeproblems at the other end. Evenwith their advantage, Manchesterdid not adopt a new game plan.Instead they continued to run theball forward on breaks and longpasses, keeping little possession inthe centre against a Europa teamthat kept pressing forward andkeeping possession in midfield tomaintain their quick short pass playbefore breaking down the flanks orsteam through the centre.

The second half saw more of thesame, with Manchester absorbingthe pressure defensively as Europakept possession of the ball andcontinued to lunge forward lookingfor goal. Manchester still reliant onthe long pass and quick break toreach Moya's penalty area.

In one of the many breaks fromdefence Manchester saw a goaldisallowed as Hernandezrummaged forward trying to getpast two defenders. Sandwichedbetween the two Europa defendersHernandez found the ball aftermomentarily losing it and struck itpast keeper Munoz only to see thelinesman wave for offside to hisdismay.

With Manchester enraged by thedecision Europa launched their ownattack which saw new signing Alex

Quillo strike the ball into the topcorner of the goal and pastgoalkeeper Macedo for his first forEuropa.

Even one up and with ten men theEuropa professionals maintainedtheir pressure on Manchester, keeping possession of the balland making Manchester chaseafter the ball. It was not until thelast ten minutes and with JPDuarte coming on for Manchesterthat they begun to pile forward.

Manchester saw four shots at goalcleared from within the six yardbox in a matter of seconds, asthey literally threw everything atEuropa, only to see it thrown backout again to their obviousfrustration.

As the minutes ticked awayManchester won a throw-in. Theball was thrown into the dangerarea with the clearance from theEuropa defence falling to the feetof Manchester's defenderRovengo who struck the ballbefore it hit the ground, nailing itinto the back of the net for theequaliser and obviouscelebrations to follow.Europa, with seconds to go on theclock were unable to pick up andattempt a comeback, losing twofurther points, the gap with Lincolnnow widened to 8 points and theirhopes for a Champions Leaguequalifier fading further away.Europa have now dropped fivepoints this January, withManchester since the changes inmanager have seen their fortuneschange, regaining groundfollowing their poor start to theseason.

A humiliating defeat was the least of Angelsproblems as they face rebuilding their teamafter the departure of half their squad includ-ing keeper Mateo and their manager duringthe week. The last team owner Edmondswould have wished to meet was Lincoln, andfor good reason following a 13-0 hammeringthey received.

Edmonds didn't have to be told Lincoln werethe biggest goal-scorers of the league, he

came with two replacements for Mateo, justin case, and he needed them.

Angels started the match showing some goodsigns. For the first 30 minutes of play theyseemed to have guardian angels in front ofgoal. From the very first two minutes newgoalkeeper Gonzalez had to make two savesas Lincoln showed their intent. The next 28minutes saw absorbed the pressure. Lincolnrunning in down the flanks and putting the ball

deep into the centre on numerous occa-sions came against a defensive wall cre-ated by Angels blockading their path.Angels had parked the bus, the house andeverything they could find in front of goal tokeep Lincoln out.

For the first 30 minutes Angels looked likethe side that had once gone ahead two nilagainst Europa before being between bythe narrowest of margins. This was, how-ever, not the case.

It was not until the 34th minute that a rundown the left flank saw a deep cross intothe centre which was struck whilst in the airto goal by Casciaro (Kyle that is). The ballbouncing off the crossbar and into the backof the net for the first. The goal itselfseemed to be more of a miss kick than anaccurate delivery, but finding the hole in An-gels blockade. Lincoln had finally unlockedthe game.

Lincoln launched an assault on the weak-nesses they had found during the first thirtyminutes and to good effect. Just minutesafter the first Angels conceded a corner thatwas swung to the far post where it washeaded back in for Cabrera to header intothe back of the net. The Angels keeperslack of height seemed to have been notedand Lincoln were about to take advantageof his weaknesses and that of the defence. The 3-0 came from a break down the rightflank with a cross into the penalty area see-ing Abayian header the ball over the keeper, who had struggled to reach high balls.Half time came just on time for Angels withLincoln going for the fourth but seeing theball hit the post and bounce away from dan-ger.

The second half started with Lincoln changingplay to the right flank, where they had causedthe most problems. Cabreras started to playa pivotal role within minutes with deepcrosses into the penalty area within minutesof the match resuming.

A cross from the right flank soon paid off asthe ball was picked up at the edge of the boxand lobbed over the keeper for the fourth.Lincoln were on a roll and hungry for moregoals. Angels conceded a freekick some tenmetres from the edge of the box. A quick chipover a surprised Angels defence left Cabrerahaving to outrun just one defender, left clearwith just the keeper to beat he shot low to theside of the keeper for the fifth.

Within minutes a break through the centresaw the ball passed to the right once againwhere it was crossed deep inside the penaltyarea where it is headed to goal. With thekeeper making a save the ball rebounds toAbayian who heads it in for the sixth.

Angels soon made a change of keeper bring-ing on the veteran Parody.

Within minutes of having come into the gameParody found his goal under assault again. The ball once again crossed from the right forAbayian to slot in at the post for the seventh.Lincoln were unstoppable, and hungry forgoals.

Angels defence was noticeably demoralisedwith even instructions from their replacementkeeper going unattended to. The result beinga freekick easily crossed into the centre foundAbayian too easily head into the back of thenet as the keeper tried to reposition himself toblock the header from the unmarked Abayian. The goal tally continued with yet another free-kick swung into the area to the far post whereCabreras controls and slots it past the keeperby the post for the ninth goal.

Angels had no response to Lincolns assault.Angels were pedestrians in what was becom-

ing a walk over. The tenth goal cameCalderon who placed a sidestep low shotpast Parody.

Not content with the double digit scorelineLincoln maintained their pressure, thistime Casciaro run into the area, outpacingseveral defenders before striking the ballhard into the back of the net and past Par-ody from the left side of the goal.

For some minutes Lincoln slowed downwith several attempts from outside thearea cleared or stopped by Parody, whoseemed to be under a constant barrage.

The long range shots soon paid their divi-dends as Chipolina struck from outside thepenalty area into a congested penalty box.the ball screaming past Parody who wasable to get his tips to the ball, but notenough to push the ball out. Lincoln now12-0 ahead.

The match soon took a new turn as Angelscalled on the referee to ease off and arguedover all of the officials calls.Their new man-ager vociferously protested at the refereesdecisions and was soon warned . Secondslater the referee signalled him to exit instruct-ing him off pitchside as he continued his rants. With Lincoln slowing their own pace down agear or two, but still maintaining the pressurea shot from outside the area was saved byParody only to see the lurking Abayian gethold of the ball, and go around him as hedived to his feet for the thirteenth and finalgoal.

Former goalkeeper, Mateo, whose departureto Manchester 62 shocked the team, watchedthe match with sadness as he saw his formerteammates go down by 13-0

Lincoln entered the match six points aheadand having seen their transfer market valueincrease from £250,000 a fortnight ago to£1.8 million. Their goal tally giving them a sig-

nificant goal difference showing how theyhave been ensuring that all possible factorswhich could affect their position at the end ofthe season are treated with equal signifi-cance. With x number of hattricks in thismatch the depature of players such as Bar-don seems not to have affected their game-play.

Angels , at the bottom of the league, haveseen their season go from one nightmare toanother. This latest defeat further raising ex-pectations of relegation. The club which wasformed only two years ago is known to oper-ate on a very low budget, with players said tonot be paid a wage. Former players highlight-ing that even training sessions are non-exis-tence. New Ceuta manager today discoveringthat he faces a steep hill if he is to save theteam from relegation.

Angels are now reported to be seeking in-vestors before the end of the transfer windowin order to reinforce their team.

Lincoln, fourth in the table, has seen two oftheir players leaving to play 11 aside, one forSt Joseph's the other for Mons Calpe, neither believed to wish to continue playingfutsal for the time being.

Lions who themselves have had to performwith limited resources, including men short, continue second from bottom, with the

guaranteed points playing in their favour.

The second match in the first division did notfair much better, as Pheonix met Cannons. The latter fielding just one substitute at thestart of the match, with a second onearriving well into midway through the firsthalf.

The match itself, although not a classic withrespect to overall play was to see Pheonixplay out another dramatic scoreline withbottom of the league Cannon who have onlywon one match all season.

Minister for Sports Steven Linares hasstated that Gibraltar will have a new runningtrack soon, in line with planned upgrades forthe sports facilities in Gibraltar with a view tothe Small Island Games in 2019.

Speaking at a press conference held by theGAAA to introduce European Athletics Presi-dent Svein Arne, the Minister was very directin his comments, referring to criticisms maderecently in social media that his ministry isgeared for football. " We are not football, weare for all sports" he said as he confirmedthat his Ministry were all ready looking atplans to upgrade all sports facilities andwere awaiting the finalisation of budget esti-mates before making further announce-ments.

Commenting on the importance of Athleticsthe Minister added that plans to upgrade therunning tracks were already in the planningstages and "promised" a new running trackin Gibraltar before the Island Games. Thepresent track, due to the use of the presentstadium is already showing signs of wearwhich has been highlighted among athletes.

The promise to upgrade the track comesalso at a time when a warm up track is al-ready under consideration for runners. Thewarm up track, a 200m racing track, isplanned to be located in the area of Cepsaonce the new east side link road is com-pleted and the area is transformed, asplanned, into an extension of the sports fa-cilities at Bayside Sports complex. Thewarm up track is welcomed by athletes asone of the possible solutions in removingathletes from training next to the footballpitch when matches are on. "It is an acci-dent waiting to happen," commented a localathletics official to Coresportgib as he de-

scribed how during training sessions, espe-cially when children are involved, footballmatches do take place placing the athletesat risk of being hit by balls kicked out of play."Children are small, and a ball hitting themon the head could actually cause serious in-juries or even kill them, these are grownmen, some playing for clubs who are com-peting to be at the top of their league to getpromoted," as he referred to the fact mostmatches taking place during practise ses-sions are second division matches, "youcannot expect them to stop playing becausewe are training, but one day someone, evena child, might get hit by a ball and get injuredbecause of it. It's not the best of situations atthe moment for any of us."

After an absence of somefour years, the, somewhat,curiously-named, "IndoorRowing Event" made a wel-come return to the GibraltarAmateur Rowing Associa-tion’s (GARA) Racing Calen-dar with the Calpe andMediterranean RowingClubs (CRC and MRC re-spectively) gearing up tocompete for the Rotary Chal-lenge Cup.

The chilly, bracing conditionson Saturday the 16th Janu-ary 2016 did not deter agood turnout of supportersfrom gathering in front of theBoathouses in anticipationof, and what proved to be,an entertaining and excitingexhibition of local, land-based, rowing prowess at itsbest.

It is, to some extent, un-usual for rowers to findthemselves so near to spec-tators. The up-close and per-sonal, vocal encouragement,no doubt, contributed to-wards some excellent indi-vidual performances andimpressive results overall. The morning’s proceedingsopened with the Female andMale Junior 14 categoriesracing over 1,000m. Thissaw Sophie Peralta (CRC)and Craig Gill (CRC) com-pleting the distance in times

of 4:03.20 and 3:55.50 respectively. A cred-itable performance by, second-placed,Daniella Wood (CRC: 4:04:10) in the Fe-male event being worthy of note. For the remaining categories (with the ex-ception of the Veteran Male event), the dis-tance increased to 2,000m. This saw DilysRoswell (CRC), in the Female Junior 16,and Alessandro Chincotta (CRC), in theMale Junior 16, finishing in times of 7:43:60and 6:47:10 respectively.

In the Male Junior 18 competition, JakeMoreno (CRC) finished in 6:37:00; justahead of Kenneth Alvarez (6:40:80). DilysRoswell (CRC), who doubled up for the Fe-male Junior 18 race minutes after her win inthe Junior 16 event, again, finished first in atime of 7:50:30.

The Veteran Male 1000m race provided

MRC with its solitary win of the day withJames Vinales marking his return to thesport in a time of 3:02:20.

The remaining two events provided greatexcitement. In the Senior Female category,a determined effort by Nadine Villalta (CRC)allowed her to finish in a time of 7:44:50;seconds ahead of MRC’s Gianna Romero(7:47:10).

The final event saw 15 year-old Jack Prior(CRC) achieve the best performance of theday over 2,000m in a remarkable time of6:24:50: just over 1 second ahead of MRC’sSean Randall (6:25:90).

Even at his, relatively, young age, Jack iswidely recognised as one of Gibraltar's mostpromising rowing talents. Dilys Roswell isalso, clearly, another up-and-coming talent

Page 95: Coresportgib 04 - Gibraltar weekly digital sports magazine - 27th January 2016

as her time of 7:43:60 in the Under 16 eventwas the best Female performance of theday. For the purposes of the Rotary ChallengeCup, one point was awarded to the winner ofeach individual event and made CRC theclear winner. This victory by CRC translatesinto four points towards the Garbarino Chal-lenge Cup: The trophy awarded to the mostsuccessful Club at the end of the Season.

Overall, GARA’s Indoor Rowing Event, wasan undoubted success and credit should begiven to the organisers for ensuring asmoothly-run and most enjoyable morning oftop-class sport.

It was particularly encouraging to witnessthe participation of a cohort of young rowersbolstering the representation of both Clubs

particularly in younger categories: This onlyaugurs great prospects for the future ofGibraltar rowing.

The next GARA event is scheduled for Sat-urday the 6th February 2016: When theClubs compete for the Sacarello ChallengeCup Team Endurance Regatta over a courseof 5,000m.

First blood went for Eagles from shortcorner in what was to turn out as acompetitively tough encounter with the

RAF ladies.

Both teams were playing as if the match wasa cup final not a friendly. Eagles soonstretched their lead further with some strongattacking play.

Having drawn the previous night bothmatches in the 7-aside tournament theEagles young team were not scared to runthe RAF back into their own area.

Piling on the pressure the RAF soon won ashort corner, and although well blocked, allowed a bit of free space they tookadvantage to shorten the gap.

The RAF pressed on into the second have.Well disciplined and aggressive in their play, but this did not impede Eagles from playing

intelligently and without fear of theiropponents.

With the second half reaching its final 15minutes Eagles who had stretched the fieldby taking advantage of space opened up bytheir counterattacks broke from one of theircounters. A shot from outside the Ddeflected off an RAF player who mishit theball as she tried to clear it. Eagles going 3-1ahead.

The RAF responded quickly, highlighting thecompetitive nature of the match comingback with their own goal.

A lovely dribble inside the d by Eaglesnumber 9 got her around the keeper to pushin the fourth. The goal once again saw the RAF girlsresponding with their own goal. Eaglesfinally winning 4-3.

The Senior Cup match betweenGrammarians 1 and Grammarians 2 was anevenly matched contest where both teamscompeted for dominance.

Not to be out done by the first team thesecond team equalled them stick to stickand on every run during the first half of thematch.

A short corner opportunity in the first fewminutes saw the second team block anddefend against the threat, leading to animmediate chance at the other end of thefield as Flower found himself alone in theopposing D to strike just wide of the far post.

Both teams closed each other down wellwith neither getting many shots in at goal.Grammarians best chance in the first twentyminutes was saved by the keepers arm.

The first team eventually broke the deadlockwith a run into the D where the player foundhimself one on one with the goalkeeperwhom he rounded easily before slotting theball at the back of the net for the 1-0.

The second team pushed the first teamback, with Flower taking up a role in defenseand allowing the faster paced youngster toventure forward.

The match saw both teams play for a win, with little difference between the two the firstteam narrowly winning by 2-1. Both havingsome clear chances at both ends.

Following the end of the matchGrammarians commented that it was a"great display of skill by some of the youngplayers and a great performance in goal bykeeper Denil Udhwani . The future looksbright."
