Shambolic Angels give matchaway against EuropaEuropa 3-0 Angels

The Gibraltar First Divisionwas brought to ridiculewhen relegation boundAngels FC turned up ontothe field with just seven

players against second placed EuropaFC.

With seven players the match couldstill be played, although with the rulesstating that the match would have tobe abandoned if a team had less thanseven players observers soon pointedout that it would not take long for thematch to be abandoned.

Europa, fielding a team which alreadyhad many of its first team players inthe stands or bench had already

come prepared to test out some oftheir less regular players. They werehowever, not to have much chance ofdoing so.

Angels were fielding their PresidentHoskens as a defender, even thoughhis introduction into last weeks matchagainst Britannia had seen them gofrom 3-0 up to losing 4-3 as from themoment he walked onto the field.

Sources from within Angels confirmedon Monday night that the team wereaware that they were not fielding a fullteam from earlier on the same day. Acar accident had left two playersunable to attend. Players are alsosaid to have already decided that theywould not be continuing with the club. One key player also confirmed that he

had informed the club that he refusedmake the two to three hour carjourney to Gibraltar unless it wasconfirmed that they would be fieldinga full team. When this was notconfirmed he decided to stay behind. His decision came on the back of hissubstitution two matches earlier whichhad led to him being sidelined thenext match for speaking out againstthe coaches decision to replace him.

Europa went into the lead very earlyin the match. By the 13th Minute theywere 3-0 up and it was a matter oftime before predictions wouldmaterialise. At least two Angelsplayers rubbed their knees followingthe third goal. Just second afterrestarting an Angels player droppedmassaging his leg. A quickconsultation between the official andthe player and it was determined thathe was not going to continue play.

The 8th man, who had appeared lateat the stadium, did not have any timeto finish talking by the bench and

head to the changing room. As hespoke to those at the bench theofficial blew for the end of the match, abandoning the match and leavingEuropa with only a 3-0 scoreline toshow for their appearance.

Many obervers, even a first divisioncoach who had turned up to watch thematch sighed at the outcome of thematch suggesting that this would onlybring Gibraltar football into disrepute ifa first division side in UEFA wasallowed to not even field a full team ina crucial first division match withoutfurther sanctions. His comments wereechoed by other representatives ofvarious first division clubs who hadbeen watching.

The result leaves Europa still 8 pointbehind Lincoln but now providesfurther security for those fighting atthe foot of the table as Angels revivalseems to have been exhausted.

Gibraltar United provedoubters wrongLynx 0-1 Gibraltar United

“We are going to win today,”that was the very emphatic, confident remarks of a RobertMontovio prior to the start ofGibraltar United’s battle

against fourth placed Lynx.

Gibraltar United had failed to secureany points in their relegation battleagainst Glacis United last weekend, and was looking at a relegation play-off unless they started accumulatingpoints. Fourth placed Lynx were notthe punters obvious choice for themto do this, but as the first halfconcluded it was obvious doubterscould be proven wrong.

Gibraltar United had played out avery defensive game, not changingtheir own game play andconcentrating on not letting theopponents through to goal. At everyopportunity Montovio and Perez hadprodded Lynx’s defence causingmayhem as they surged forward.

A very young Under 17 Robert, replacing Robba in goal for the day,was given a baptism of fire as hisnamesake Robert (Montovio) testedhim out even in the chases for aback pass.

Lynx dominated most of the play butfound they were unable to strike withdanger at goal. In the first half theyhad only had one shot on target.

The second half started with Lynx pushing evenharder and causing danger in Gibraltar United’spenalty box. However, Montovio was soon tomake his words count as he struck from a quickbreak and put the ball past the young keeper(who had done little wrong in the match).

Gibraltar United celebrated as if they hadscored in a cup final, as Lynx heads bowed inrealisation that after all their effort they werenow 1-0 behind.

Lynx threw all the guns at Gibraltar United whojust formed a solid wall in front of goal.

Gibraltar United held on to the bitter end, blocking every shot, scrambling for every pass, swarming in every intrusion into their penaltyarea. The last ten minutes were as if GibraltarUnited were under siege from two teams asshot after shot rained in, cross after crossrained in but young Aidan’s goal remainedclean.

As the final whistle blew the joy in GibraltarUnited’s ranks were clear to see as playerscelebrated a deserved victory

Goals galore for Wilson's menLions 6 - 3 Glacis United

Dave Wilson and RafaBado's start as coachesat Lions could not havebeen more exhilaratingin a match that had

everything in it, including goalsgalore and red card incidents, withseven goals in a second half.

Glacis came from having made thefirst steps away from a relegationplay off place after beating GibraltarUnited last weekend. Lions, however, had only drawn againstManchester 62, had also seen thedoor to their manager and althoughwith little to win or lose expect pridenow had two interim coaches to endthe season whilst they look towardsthe Rock Cup semi –finals.

Lions stepped ahead scoring early

in the match only to see Glacis stepup their own game and come backwith the equaliser.

The match was to take on a dingdong type affair as both teamsplayed it out with nine goals and twored cards completing what was aneventful match in which Wilsonearned his first three points ascoach.

Lions, who had found it hard to findthe net in recent weeks came out ofthe battle with six goals to theirname, a marked improvement fromprevious performances. Wilson andBado's presence very muchapparent at the touchline as Lionsseemed to have been re-energised.

Glacis did get three to their namethough. A total of seven goalsscored in the second half after both

teams came out level at1-1 at half-time.

Glacis, who maintainedtheir game plan of tryingto use their now not sosecret weapon of thefast counter attack wereeffectively shut downfrom doing so. The lossof two of their players tored cards did not helptheir cause as theywere reduced to ninemen in a match in whichthey were hoping forpoints to leapfrogBritannia XI, who wereone point above thembefore the start of theweekend.

Lions momentarily putthemselves above Lynx, and increased the gapbetween themselvesand Manchester 62.

Lincoln walk it home against3rd placed St JosephLincoln Red Imps 3-0 St Joseph

Although starting brightlySt Joseph were littlematch againstChampions-to -beLincoln, who powered

through the match controlling theoverall pace of the game.

The differences between the twobecame very clear when looking atthe league table after. Lincoln’s winplaces them 29 points ahead of StJoseph who are in 3rd place.

St Joseph played a defensive tacticaimed at closing Lincoln down in theareas where their playmakers makethe most ground. Lincoln didn’t have

it all their way as St Joseph’smaintained the pressure in themiddle, and closed the gaps tomake it difficult to play through to theflanks. Lincoln’s patience saw them playingacross the field to maintainpossession and find a way ontogoal.

Lincoln still reached the Saints areawith danger even from the first fewminutes getting three corners in thefirst five minutes, before Saintsdefensive formation pushed thematch into the centre of the midfield.

The first goal was a typical Lincolngoal as they broke down the flankand whipped in a low cross where

Cabreras, who was fractionally offside, stuck a foot out to flick it past Perez forthe first.

St Joseph’s did not change their tacticsmuch, and maintained their pressure inthe middle, without looking for an all outattacks which they knew would see themleft wide open at the back. Instead theyplayed out for quick counters which weresoon dismantled by a firmly positionedChipolina and Garcia partnership.

Lincoln came into the second half pinningSt Joseph’s into their own half, forcingPerez to make some very good saves tokeep them out. The pressure, nevertheless led to a second goal as LeeCasciaro, who had just been brought on,met a cross from the wide left and slottedit in for the second.

Without St Joseph’s really having muchluck when they went forward Lincoln kepttheir lead intact. A last minute penaltygave Lincoln their third and final goal toseal the game.

Manchester 62 eases pastBritanniaManchester 62 (6-0) Britannia XI

A shambolic performance byBritannia XI left Manchester 62controlling the match from the veryfirst minutes of the first half as theyeased to a comfortable win.

Britannia, although starting off quietbrightly soon faded as Manchester62 scored the first goal, Toncheff, who had played out his one matchsanction via the reserve fixtures, broke through and passed toHernandez, alone in the penaltybox, and with Barnfather beaten, forthe 1-0.

Britannia’s woes continued as on the23rd minute a cross into the centre

of the box saw Hastings smash itinto his own net for an own goal. Acracker of a goal had it been aManchester 62 player scoring. Justthree minutes later Toncheff put hisname on the score sheet.

Already 3-0 down Britannia walkedback onto the field from the half timebreak missing a keeper as Lee tookup the gloves. Manchester were notto capitalise on Britannia’svulnerability at the back having losttheir first keeper and main centreback in one sweep. It was not untilLee had asked for a change to allowReyes to go in goal that Toncheffsmashed in his second from a crossfrom the right.

Return of women’s football toour pitchesLincoln Red Imps Ladies 2-0Lions Ladies

Women’s football made a return toGibraltar’s football pitches after alengthy absence whilst the GibraltarFootball Association soughtalternative allocations for the girls.

On Saturday Lions Ladies playedout a tight match against LincolnRed Imps ladies which eventuallysaw the latter win by 2-0.

The match was played on pitch 1,the main pitch, with new lines drawnin to accommodate the 9 a-sideformat the women’s league hastaken. The pitch which was more ofa square than a rectangle

measuring 80m by 70m saw theladies struggle to accustomthemselves to the width with most ofthe play at the centre.

Lions with new temporary coachJansen Olivero on the touchlinewhilst Adrian Parral attended to hisEuropean Coaching Academy in theUS was getting accustomed to hisrole as manager. Parral had to leavefor the US on a pre-planned tripwhich he had scheduled for after theend of the women’s season. However, the over seven weekdelay in restarting the league meantthat his team were still to completetheir season which should haveended by now.

Lincoln took advantage ofthe narrower defensiveplay by opening up theirgame in the second halfand playing wider. The twoteams neverthelessconcentrated most of theplay on one third of thepitch with very few scoringchances. An issue whichobservers on the sidelines, including the women’snational coach pointed out.Lincoln became the moredominant of the two as thesecond half progressed

Lions defence, especiallytheir keeper seemedfrustrated at the mannerthe match was developing, which led to them losingtheir focus and givingLincoln the chance toscore their second andfinal goal.

Boys against men - StreetSoccer put them togetherThe Street Soccer League SPringCup was played out at the MUGA onSunday, under the menacing rainclouds.

The event, the second tournamentof its kind this year brought togetherplayers from all categories andlevels, allowing those who justwanted a competitive kick aboutwithout the training and commitmentof club football to take part.

It was an enjoyable events, and onein which some players had humblepie for lunch as they sawthemselves beaten by some unlikelyopponents.

In one match the balance seemed to

be all wrong when youngsters, nomore than 12/13 or less in somecases, came up against grown upmen.

The balance was surely wrong, themen were obviously going to win,but not until the match started that itwas obvious it was heading theother way. The boys soon took thelead, and within minutes thesomewhat beer bellied adults werealready 5-0 down, without a singleshot at goal to thier name. This wasStreet Soccer League, whereanything can happen.

A total of nine teams took part withJP Haulage lifting the cup in the end.

TOP FOUR THROUGH TO CUPSEMISThe teams currently occupying thetop four places in the GABBA FirstDivision table were successful intheir quarter final ties.

The closest of these ties was theonly one between 2 First Divisionteams, in which Isolas Blue Starsovercame Europa 73-70.

It was a hard-fought encounter rightup to the end, unfortunately marredby the sending-off of Europa’sCarlos Perez, a very good playerwith a volatile temperament. Early inthe last quarter, Perez hit anopponent in the face and got anunsportsmanlike foul for it, whichwas his fourth personal foul. He thenthrew the ball at the referee, just

missing him, and was promptlydisqualified. This was his seconddisqualification this season.

The 3 foul shots for the offenceswere converted, putting Isolas 59-50ahead but Europa rallied, led byJason Schwartz, and almost savedthe game. The first quarter was tied16-16, Isolas edged the second 15-13 and the third 23-20, losing thefourth 19-21.

Raul Garcia 22, Angel Guerrero 20and Alex Ruiz 12 led Isolas, whileShwartz 19, Perez 14 and JesusFernandez 10 were best for Europa.

while Valerie Doherty 21 andCaroline Robba 10 were best for thelosers.

U18 LEAGUE WILL BEDECIDED IN LAST GAME

This season’s most attractive andspectacular games are, without adoubt, in the Under 18 League.Fittingly, following the latest wins byIsolas Blue Stars and CS BaysideArgus, the last game (onWednesday 27th April at 5:30 pm)will decide the title. Isolas have lostonce, to Bayside, who havethemselves lost twice, but the head-to-head between the two is 1-1, so,

although a win for the latter wouldbring them level on points, theywould take the title on the head-to-head.

Isolas, with superior fire power, fromSergio Gil 34, Aaron Santos 24, AlexGarcia 20 and Jamie Mesilio 15,could not find ways to stop thebrilliance of Ian Yeats, who hit agame-high 45, well supported byJulian Smart’s 27, and it was only inthe last 3 minutes of the game that, led by the enigmatic Gil, they pulledaway to register a 99-84 win.

ISOLAS BLUE STARS U16 ANDU14 CHAMPIONS IN WAITING

Mathematically, not quite, but

realistically, only an upset of megaproportions can prevent Isolas BlueStars from becoming Under 16 andUnder 14 League Champions.

At Under 16, 1 win in their last 3games – they are unbeaten – will beenough. At Under 14, they have tomake certain that they turn up withthe regulation minimum 8 players fortheir last 2 games.

Gibraltar Basketball makestwo young boys dreams cometrue as they play together

It was an emotive day at theTercentenary Sports Hall onFriday evening, thanks to theefforts and ideas of StuartFelice (player coach at IsolaBlue Stars), the collaboration

of a whole Isola Blue Stars teamand Valmar Wrightec team, theGABBA President (also FIBA) JohnGoncalves (who without hisauthority none of it would havehappened) and a basketball familyof Tunbridges who knew how tokeep a secret well within their ownhousehold.

The story started several weeks agowhen Stuart Felice had wanted to

give young Sami Tunbridge achance to fulfil one of his wishes. The young teen Isola Blue Starsplayer had commented that he hadalways wanted to play alongside hisbrother Sean, a young boy who hadbeen wheelchair bound since youngdue to a rare illness, but believed itwas one thing he would never beable to do.

Sami and Sean come from a familyof basketball players, Paul, thegrandfather, Wayne, the father, andTom Tunbridge and Francis Caruanathe uncles all played. With Sami inthe ranks of Isola Blue Stars, as wasthe grandfather and Sami's father

and uncle in the ranks of ValmarWrightec the occasion had comewhen father and sons would meeton Friday in a B Division match.

Sean had come to watch his brotherin as many matches as the familycould take him to, and Sami hadalways wanted to have his brotheralongside him on the basketballcourt.

It was not difficult to convince theIsola Blue Stars team to take up theidea of letting Sean play for them forone match. It was even less difficultto convince GABBA President whothought the idea was incredible, itwas far more difficult to convince afamily without letting Sami and Seanknow, but it was achieved.

Friday evening saw emotionsrunning deep as Sami andgrandfather Paul joined the IsolaBlue Stars Reserves ranks, on thebench at first, whilst Wayne, the

father, and Tom and Francis, theuncles, filed for Valmar WrightecVeterans. As the teams warmed upthe bonding between Sami andSean was evident as the formerlooked towards his brother smiledand gave his thumbs up with animmediate response from thesidelines, a smile and cheer.

As the match progressed Sami wasbrought on for the first time towardsthe start of the second quarter.Minutes later his father came on.The first move was to see Samihaving to negotiate a block fromboth father and uncle, winning afoul, to the joking laughs of his olderrelatives. His response was a threepointer. It was the start of a familymoment which everyone playingwas very aware and happy to beinvolved in. Just as the minutesticked away, towards the halfwaymark of the second quarter, grandfather Paul Tunbridge came onto the applause of the crowd. It was

father against son, on both sides, with a touch of uncles in the mix.

Unbeknown to Sami, Sean hadbeen taken to get changed. IsolaBlue Stars had signed him on for thematch and would be bringing himon, even if only for a few moments.

As father played against son, behindthe blue screen that signals thecentre of the Tercentenary SportsHall, the divide between pitchesSean was being assisted towardsthe benches. The signal came thateverything was ready and coachDavid Parody called for a changeimmediately after a time out.Through the curtains, assisted byhis mother walked Sean dressed inthe Isola Blue Stars, as he enteredthe match court his father embracedhim, Sami run to his brother andembraced him, and the small crowdof family, friends and basketballcolleagues that had gatheredcheered and applauded and some

tears fell. No more so than the tearsof joy that run down Sami's cheeksas he walked back to play watchinghow his brother sat on the Isola BlueStars bench. Coach David Parodyhanded Sean a basketball, making iteven more evident that he was apart of the team. GABBA and IsolaBlue Star John Goncalves sat nextto Sean as the minutes tickedtowards halftime. As the teamsgathered for the halftime pep talkgrandfather Paul, SAMI and SEANwere gathered around as part of thesame team. A basketball family wasnow complete on the match court, forming a part of the Isola Blue Starsteam, playing against their fatherand uncle.

A wish had been made possible, if atleast momentarily.

Hawks were to come out thebetter as they took over andjumped ahead into the lead, eventually winning 5-2.

The two teams are now in fulltraining towards theEuropean matches.

The match also saw the startof a 3 week period in which aselection of junior squadplayers practiced their role as“Ball Patrols”.

The young girls will be takingon the crucial role of “ballboys” as is commonly known,a role which is not often seenin Gibraltar’s hockey league, but which could proveessential in the forthcomingEuropean Hockey matches.

Veterans show they stillhave a few tricks up theirsleevesCollegians Veterans 4-7Grammarians 2

They might not be youngboys any more, butCollegians Veterans arefar from a totally spentforce, at least that is

what their momentary revival in thefirst part of the second half againstGrammarians boys highlighted.

Three – one down at half timeCollegians were to come out playinga hard, quick pressing game thatgave them a momentary comeback.

However not before they alsoshowed some real sportsmanshipwhen Umpire of the Year, GoldenWhistle man himself Nathan Stagno, who forms part of CollegiansVeterans openly apologised to hisopponents and was the first toindicate that their goal should neverhave been given.

Collegians came out into the secondhalf scoring an early goal. Just asquick Grammarians boys pulled oneback to make it 4-2. However somequick play let the not so youngHernandez through to strike in the

third for Collegians. They were notto stop here. An excellent piece ofstick work from several Collegiansplayers left Grammarians Boysrooted to the ground unable to stopthem reaching the by line andpushing the ball back to be slotted infor the equaliser.

However, this was to be Collegianslast goal. Their last puff of the dayyou could say. Grammarians cameknocking back to put themselvesahead on 5-4 before someconfusion among Collegians playersin the rolling substitutions left theirdefence open to allow the 6-4.

Grammarians closed the score withtheir seventh and final goal, justbefore the whistle blew, and before itbecame too dark to play. Even withthe presence of expensivefloodlights, without the possibility of

these being used until all aircrafthad landed and departed thefloodlights would remain down.Luckily the match had been startedearlier than normal and the overcastskies had not interfered with play toomuch.

Collegians had shown that theywere the true “regulars” in theleague still, even with most of theplayers in their late forties. Theyoungsters, although winning, andshowing they have a bright futureahead were taught and on field andoff field lesson as they argueddecisions even with the veteranswho on more than one occasion hadturned around and put their handsup as having committed an offencerather than counter the umpiresdecision.

Grammarians pushed to limitsin friendlyGrammarians 2-1 San Fernando

Grammarians werepushed to the limits bya San Fernando seniorteam that had just12hrs earlier come

from a 5-1 victory in their AndalucíaLeague match against Alcala.

San Fernando playing withGibraltarian Gareth Henwood upfront produced the best play in thefirst half. They dominated the pacepinning Grammarians back in theirhalf. Quick play up front byHenwood had him with a constantshadow by him as they pressed forgoal.

Grammarians nevertheless held onand produced their own chancewhich they converted to go one up.

In the second half Grammariansopened up the field with a boldmove moving two players up front. As San Fernando sought theequalizer they were stretched. Thisallowed Grammarians more chanceto prod forward.

San Fernando continued to pressforward and earned numerous shortcorners. Grammarians keeper madeseveral key saves to keep them inthe game as San Fernando tired.

An ugly scene was seen whenHenwood after dribbling past four

players headed to goal and was tumbled over. AGrammarians defender stood over him shoutingand grabbing at his shirt as he tried to pull him upfrom the ground. The intervention of otherGrammarian players diffused the situation as hewas led away with Henwood not having reacted tothe aggressive response whilst he was on thefloor.

Tensions seemed to rise and San Fernando weremore determined to score. Within minutes they gottheir well deserved equalizer. However as thematch neared its end Grammarians youngerplayers produced a good break and struck anacross goal swipe into the back of the net for the2-1.

The match was a practice match for the Europeancampaign Grammarians are due to embark uponnext month. San Fernando provided a goodtesting ground with a good track record thisseason including wins against Berliners recently.

There was a marked contrast in discipline on thepitch between both sides however, Grammarianswin, and their tactical changes at half timehighlighted their strength.

Hawks could not have chosen atougher opponent to faceimmediately after a clash againstEagles the previous day.

San Fernando women had just wonthe women's Andalucian league theprevious day and came full ofconfidence and belief.

Hawks were pedestrian incomparison to the previous day’sconfident resurgence that gave themthe win against Eagles. Just as they

had put five past Eagles, SanFernando put four past them to bringthem down to earth.

A well rehearsed well organised SanFernando pushed Hawks to thelimits. Stretching their lines andpinning them back.

Hawks looked tired and out of sortscompared to San Fernando who hadplayed two matches in the sameperiod of time and had travelleddown to Gibraltar to play. Whilst onSaturday they had clicked together, they looked nervy even in the third
