5. Alternative Route/s

The Council is recommending that the only other Launching Point L013 at the southern end of

Loch Awe is deleted. Of the two Launch Points L240 is probably the better if access to the

southern end of Loch Awe is desirable.

6. Consultation with Objectors & Other Interested Parties

Launch Point is in a location of a boathouse which will be renovated in the future having it

promoted as a launch point will conflict with this future development of boathouse. There are

also concerns regarding parking and vehicle turning.

7. Access Officer’s Initial Comments:

There is parking beside the road for at most three cars. From there a path slopes down to the

top of a short, steep flight of stone steps leading to a shingle beach. It is anticipated that the

majority of users will be canoeists wanting to access the southern end of Loch Awe. There is a

Crannog nearby as well as a considerable area of relatively sheltered water.

The designation of a launching point at this site would in the event that the owner decided to

redevelop the boathouse place a burden on them to provide an equivalent launching point

nearby. This is one of the reasons that Paths and Launching Points are designated in the Core

Paths Plan. The designation would not stop the boathouse from being redeveloped it would

simply require the planners to consider public access to Loch Awe when determining the

application.

The area beside the road where cars currently park appears to be well used and the provision

of a bin suggests high levels of use during the summer months. If the Council had identified a

road safety issue there would be some evidence of action being taken to manage the problem.

The nearest Launching Point to this location is over three kilometres north of this point. This is

at present the only useable launching point at the southern end of the loch. Because no

support has been received for this proposal during the last consultation we are proposing it for

deletion.
