Youre both from Rockhampton how did

you hook up?

A few years ago, we started hanging out with the same people. One day, Tom randomly called and asked me to try some original music. We ended up playing 5 days a week in local pubs and hotels. Our sound generated pretty quickly!

Both of your families are based in Rocky, Do you go back and visit often?

Yeah were heading back there now and just spending time with everyone. Were based in Brisbane, but Ive got my 3 kids in Rocky so every spare moment that I get to spend with them is great.

Who does the writing Tom or yourself? Or is it a bit of a combined effort?

Its definitely a combined effort. Tom is lyrical-based, while I take care of the guitar construction. Its always been easy, especially when we both

stick to what works for us.

Plus Toms great at telling stories through his writing. It also helps that our band plays the same way as us thats the key to a good performance.

Your rendition of Youd better be home soon was fantastic and went off with the crowd last night how did the incredibly successful Finn Tribute album He Will Have His Way come about?

2 years ago, when we were unsigned artists, we asked to cover the album. The Australian [newspaper] gave us a 4/5 star

album review and shortly after that, we got a call out of the blue. We had 2 days to do it, which was nuts. Playing each song 3-4 times every night paid off and we were able to punch it [record the album] out in one sitting.

Get your minds out of the gutter - were talking about the good kind of crabs! Want to know the ins and outs of catching these delicious crustaceans?Bob from Whitsunday Fishing World gives us some top tips for catching these nipping delights!

BEST BAITS

Mullet Heads / Tuna Cuts / Fish Frames

For best results, soak your baits in Tuna Oil for 1 hour or more before use.

WHEN

Best time to put your pots in is at the low tide and check every 2 hours until the top of the tide, 90% of the crabs I catch are during the run in tide.

Spread your pots over an area and, after the first check, move your pots to the areas which have had the best results. Place pots at the mouth of rivers and creeks, tributaries and in the middle of the upper reaches of creeks and rivers.

TIDES

When we have the large tides, I go well up the rivers and keep my pots out of the main stream as the pot will move during the large run ins.

HOW TO PLACE YOUR POTS

Pots should always be placed with the openings pointing the same way as the tide flow.

AFTER THE WET

Best results come from the mouth of rivers and creeks as the crabs move down.

WHERE TO PLACE YOUR POTS

During the low tide, look for small gutters and tributaries running into the main rivers and go up as far as possible and place your pots there. One of my best ways to find active mud crabs is to drive your boat along the river looking at the mud banks and finding fresh digging from the crabs. Once found place, your pots around these areas.

RULES

Mud crab keep limit is 10 per person, with minimum size being 15cm point to point on the top shell.

Only the males can be taken, ALL female crabs MUST be released.

HOW TO TELL IF THE CRAB IS MALE OR FEMALE

Check the underside of the crab shell for the size of their under flap, males have a narrow flap and females have a broad flap.

Clean the mud crab by turning him over and cutting him in half, remove the top shell and clean

Crack the main nippers with a hammer and cut the halves to quarters

Place mud crab pieces into wok

Half cover crab with coconut milk

Add sweet chilli sauce to taste (I use about 1/4 cup)

Heat until rapid simmer, stirring and turning the pieces constantly, approx 10 to 15 minutes

Serve over boiled jasmine rice

Blood, sweat and tears These three words pretty much capture the hard-hitting sport of kickboxing. Have you ever wondered how these events get put together and where all the fundraised money goes?

Well, each year, fighters send in their applications to the event organisers for selection. This year, theres been an influx of entries for the popular boxing competition, with over 50 fighters profiles submitted so far. With matches determined on weight and experience, each fighter gets a glimpse of their opponent before the match.

In addition to the local talent, Will Alfred has come out of retirement to support the event, Troy Mundys back to take on the best and Antons Boys from Airlie Beach will be strutting their stuff and showing the others how to win! You wont be able to stay in your seat with this exciting line up!

With non-stop entertainment, great light shows, DJ sets, card girls and MASSIVE fights, this is a night not to be missed!

So where do the funds raised go? The answer is simple - All profits gained from this event will be donated to the Mackay PCYC. The Fight Nights organiser, Mick Pope, says that fundraising and donations are vital to keep the PCYC open. With the cuts in Federal and State funding for this fantastic facility, its basically up to the Club and local community groups to keep the doors open.

This worthwhile facility is one of the most popular attractions for our kids during the school holidays, however theres more on offer than meets the eye. How long have you lived in the Whitsundays? I moved to the Whitsundays, from Mackay where I was born, when I was 6 years old.

Youre currently working in the mines, how are you finding it so far? I love working in a mans world. However, the girls are slowly taking over [laughs].

Youve appeared in Zoo Magazine recently, how was that experience? Zoo Magazine was very much a surprise! The photo editor got his hands on some photos from a shoot I did with Thomas Dang. They emailed me, we did a shoot and then BAM! Im on the cover of Australias leading mens magazine. I have a feeling you will be seeing me in there again over the coming months.

Youve got some amazing body art going on do any of them hold special significance for you? My tattoos have no significance really. I just enjoy wearing the art. The only one that means something is the cupcake which is in my armpit. Its to raise awareness against animal cruelty (cupcake day - RSPCA).

Marathon man and trainer RICHARD BOWELS decided over a year ago that he was going to attempt to run the entire length of the ellusive BNT or Bicentennial National Trail. And then in March this year he actually started the 5330km track from Healesvale in Victoria to Cooktown in Queensland.

While most of us now are scoffing crazy-son-of-so-on under our breath reading that, the kicker is by the time you are actually reading this from your armchair, so might Richard - as hes done! At the time I actually spoke to him last month to write this article, he was crossing the Atherton Tablelands and only two weeks and just over 400kms shy of crossing the grand finish line.

This insane adventure is of course not because Richard simply felt like going for a nice long jog to let off some steam. No he consciously put himself up for this challenge to spread the word and raise awareness for SANE Australia, a donation based organisation whose goal is to improve the lives of people living with mental illness and their families.

I chose to put myself through the physical and mental side of this monstrous challenge. Some people dont have a choice; they just wake up in the morning with what sometimes feels like a monstrous challenge: that challenge is called life.

Coming across the idea by accident while on a run through the high country in Victoria, Richard noticed the stock route indicators which ignited his curiosity. On discovering that the trail led all the way across the Great Dividing Rage, a challenge was born.

I had found out that no one has ever run the route in its entirety before, which we estimated was going to take around five and half months.

The whole challenge has taken about a year and a half in planning including organising sponsorships and mapping out the path.To complete the path in a reasonable (if you can call nearly 6 months reasonable) timeframe, Richard must run anywhere from 30 80km per

day over terrain ranging from flatlands to mountains, forests, plateaus and valleys.

The trail was mapped out in 1972 and tested via horseback by adventurer Dan Seymour in 1973, under sponsorship from RM Williams. The idea was to develop a trail that linked up the stock routes along the Great Dividing Range, giving some nostalgia to horse-loving trekkers and provide them with a route to legally ride and also have the opportunity to live the free lifestyle of drovers who, back in the day, all travelled our sun-burnt territories by the old stock routes.

Heading out from Healesville on March 25th, Richard has found the main challenges have been needing to scale barbed wire and electric fences which have been erected over the past thirty years, making a clear passageway impossible.

Ill be running along seemingly completely isolated areas until all of a sudden I run into this massive fence with barbed wiring and electricity and Im amazed at the lengths some people go through to keep you out. But its not until after Ive risked my life getting through do I get to the other side and think, hang on, what if theyre trying to keep something in!?

At least he keeps his spirits high along the way, which is probably to do with the goodnights sleep he gets every night thanks to sponsorship by Maui Motorhomes who donated the camper van his girlfriend Vicki drives in to the next stop, marking the end of a days run.

Running takes up a lot of the day, but then theres also the blogs, media and websites we have to talk to and keep up to date with every day as well, so theres always work to do.

Whats surprising to find out is, even though Richards been running nearly every day for this incredible amount of time, he doesnt seem to feel any exhaustion yet or even a hint of tiring. In fact he doesnt want it to end!

I cant believe its gone so fast, Im really not looking forward to finishing, I wish I could just keep going.

But end it will (and has by now) as on September 15th Richard would have

been greeted by the Mayor of Cooktown and accompanied by a flurry of locals who will most likely escort him straight to the local pub for a well earned cooling ale.

This journey has been really well worthwhile and its been good to see that people do pay attention and you are able to get the message out and spread awareness like this to areas of Australia that are isolated, unlike the cities.

The good news for Richard is his wish may just come true, and we should all keep an eye out for his next adventure as it looks like there may be another in the works.

I cant confirm anything right now, but it seems my sponsors may be interested in further ventures so I might be planning something else once this ends.

For those of us that love hitting the gym every day because we love it, the thought that we might be overtraining seems outrageous!

Overtraining is when our exercise isnt being completely balanced with our recovery. So fatigue accumulates in our muscle and neurological systems, and even our immune systems.

Elite athletes constantly push themselves to greater performances and often succumb to injuries and illness directly related to overtraining from pushing themselves to new limits. Balancing training with recovery is a science, and many athletes have a team of geeks to help them master it.

Muscle soreness and tiredness are obvious signs our bodies are still recovering from our last session. We all know delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) means sometimes we dont even get sore from a big session for a couple of days, and then it can last up to a week (which feels like 2 weeks!).

To grow muscle, increase performance, and reduce injury, your recovery regime is as important as your training regime. Your recovery regime should involve adequate rest, active recovery (light exercise like swimming or stretching), and adequate nutrition. There are some amazing supplements (like Scivation Xtend) that have been proven conclusively to dramatically reduce recovery time.

Your muscle and neurological systems (the system that fires up your muscles) can take 2 weeks to recover completely from a big session.

One of the worlds greatest bodybuilders, Dorian Yates (won Mr Olympia 6 times), had a training regime that allowed him to train each muscle group ONCE every 21-28 days. He believed this allowed him to recover completely before smashing that muscle group again. He understood the science of it, and he was right.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born in sunny Manchester England, relocated to Hong Kong with my family where I lived for 15 years, spent a couple of years in Dublin and then finally to Australia 10 years ago. You will usually find me working at one of my businesses (Hipfish or Invention Pathways) here in Mackay, or working out at HiEnergy gym!

What made you want to compete?

I have always admired natural figure competitors. The amazing work they put into training and diet to be in peak physical condition is awe-inspiring. I wanted to see how far I could push myself and see what my body was/is capable of.. and to test my willpower and dedication! After my first comp I fell in love with the sport - Im hooked!

Competition achievements?

ANB Queensland State Titles [Sept 2012, Gold Coast]: Novice Figure 1st Place. ANB NQ Natural Bodybuilding Championships [Sept 2012, Townsville]: Overall Figure Title,

1st Place Novice Figure Short and Best Posing.

What are you judged on?

Muscularity, proportion (balance of one muscle group against another), definition (muscle separation / sharpness), balance of each side of body, overall compulsory posing ability, presentation and physique.

Were you nervous at the competition?

Oh YES! I was absolutely petrified! There is so much preparation backstage and things can go wrong! At one point someone ran off with my shoes (why a male competitor would want my high heels. I will never know). In the lead up to the QLD Titles I had ants in my pants as I couldnt wait to get there and just enjoyed myself and had bags of fun.

How did you feel when you won?

Wow - I was gob smacked, totally overwhelmed and in shock for days. I felt truly honoured to be in good enough condition to be up there in the line-up with some awesome women!

What is your normal diet?

I have a clean lifestyle 99% of the time with occasional treats so I dont go completely loopy! Whole foods, lean meats, clean carbs, good fats and oils and lots of it! I try to stay well clear of grains, sugar, lactose, soy, GM and processed food.

Nutritional philosophy?

What you put in your gob has implications far beyond simply looking good. Your body undergoes 6 trillion chemical reactions per second - consider what youre chucking into your fuel tank. Are you getting the best performance or setting yourself up for illness? Common sense tells us we dont need to be eating chemical cocktails marketed as food!

What next?

I qualify to compete at the ANB Australian Nationals in Sydney (14th Oct). There is going to be some tough competition there and I am so excited. I cannot wait to meet another bunch of awesome, inspiring people. Until then I will be in preparation, training hard, and eating wheelbarrows of food!

Before the race, yabbies (freshwater crustaceans) are auctioned off to punters who then race them for the purse.
