Coral Reefs Are Alive! Coral contains millions of tiny animals that form the spectacular reef systems that exist off the southeast Florida coast in Martin, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Reefs are the rain forests of the sea. They are home to an incredibly diverse and colorful assortment of marine life. Their extraordinary beauty captivates visitors and their productivity provides a wealth of resources.

Coral reefs are important because they protect our shorelines from storm damage; are a source of new medicines; contribute to the economy and provide us with food.

You can help protect coral reefs by properly disposing of garbage, recycling, and conserving water. Never collect or purchase anything made from coral or other marine creatures.

WHEN BOATING: Don’t anchor on a reef; use mooring buoys, if available, or navigational charts to look for a sandy spot to set your anchor.

WHEN FISHING: Learn local fishing regulations. Follow size and catch limits and safely release all fish that you can’t keep.

WHEN SNORKELING/DIVING: Swim well above corals and the bottom. Don't touch coral, or any other underwater creature, or let your gear contact anything. Don’t disturb the sediment; sand that gets kicked up can kill coral. Don’t feed or follow any marine creature.

El coral contiene millones de minúsculos animales que forman un sistema espectacular de arrecife que existe fuera de la costa sureste de Florida en Martín, Palm Beach, Broward y los Condados de Miami Dade. ¡Los corales son el bosque húmedo del mar! Son el hogar de una increíble y diversa variedad de vida marina de diferentes colores. Su extraordinaria belleza cautiva visitantes y su productividad provee gran riqueza de recursos.

Los arrecifes de coral son importantes para todos porque protegen nuestras lineas costeras de los daños que causan las tormentas, son fuente de nuevas medicinas, contribuyen a la economía y nos proporcionan comida.

Usted puede proteger los arrecifes de coral depositando la basura en los sitios apropiados, reciclando y conservando el agua. Nunca coleccione o compre artículos hechos de coral, tortugas u otras criaturas marinas.

CUANDO VIAJE EN BOTE: No ancle sobre el arrecife, use boyas de amarre si están disponibles o busque en las cartas de navegación un sitio arenoso para arrojar el ancla.

CUANDO PESQUE: Conozca las regulaciones locales de pesca; observe el tamaño y los límites de la redada y libere con cuidado los peces que le sobren.

CUANDO PRACTIQUE “SNORK” O BUCEO: Nade separado de los corales y del fondo; no toque el coral ni ninguna otra criatura bajo el agua y no permita que sus ruedas hagan contacto con nada. No perturbe el sedimento; la arena que se patéa puede matar el coral. No alimente o persiga cualquier criatura marina.
