2017 Critical Parking Requirements

Station Accessibility & Parking North Jersey Coast Line (Inner) Parking Requirement

The North Jersey Coast Line diverges from the Pennsylvania Railroad’s famed “Broadway”, now known as the ‘Northeast Corridor’ at “Union” (DK Tower) and continues outbound to Bay Head Junction in Ocean County. For N.J. TRANSIT study purposes it has been divided into three segments, all of which have projected parking Requirements. The following five slides address the Requirement on the inner or first segment of the line. Requirement in this segment is greater than 600

This study only addresses the projected parking shortages anticipated because of the opening of the new rail tunnels to the Region’s Core and because of the ‘One Seat Ride’ features brought on by the anticipated arrival of the new Duel Power Locomotives. Other concerns such as ridership gains that would occur from meaningful changes in headway and better inter-modality to provide better, more effective service are not addressed

Avenel

• Use of Township Redevelopment areas could gain 150-175 spaces

• Avenel Station has only 140 daily boardings

• Possibility of Transit Oriented Development at this site could be investigated

• Feeder Bus Service would increase ridership

• Better service headways would increase ridership

Possible Surface Parking Lots, gain of 100 Spaces

Woodbridge

• Note the proximity to the Turnpike Service Loop, a “Cars Only” vehicle exit to this with a EZ-Pass toll booth could increase ridership by 25 percent (468 new)

• Feeder Bus Service on Green Street, Main Street, Rahway Avenue and Amboy Avenue could be rider incentives as well

• Better service headways would increase ridership

Perth Amboy

• This city needs feeder bus service to both rail stations and BRT stops

• Better service headways would increase ridership

• Perth Amboy is redeveloping its waterfront, a Transit Oriented Development Project added to it would enhance the community’s project

Station Accessibility & Parking North Jersey Coast Line (Middle) Parking Requirement

The middle segment of the North Jersey Coast Line is both the longest segment of this line and the highest trafficked segment.

There are indications of a large intra and inter county ridership in this area. However, much of that traffic does not park at our facilities.

Much of the segment’s commuter traffic (4,836 riders) do park at our stations.

The segment has a projected parking Requirement greater than 3,000 spaces.

Parking Improvements

• The stations have serious problems that inhibit projected parking, including access traffic patterns

• Redevelopment project, which would have enhanced our efforts, is being delayed

• Feeder bus service connecting Sayreville Township, Parlin and Morgan could enhance ridership

• Enhanced service headways would increase ridership

Hazlet

• Good parking with adequate highway access, 5 minutes to Rt. 35 & 20 minutes from the Garden State Parkway

• Current parking is poorly organized, loss of both parking and revenue occur because of this. Consideration of developing marked spaces (1 & 2) must be given

Red Bank

• Red Bank is a major transportation center for central eastern Monmouth County. This center is served by NJT Buses #’s 831, 832, 833, 834 and 835

• There is a NJT Rail Operations. Storage Yard that is not fully used that could be made into parking

• There are several acquisition and long-term shared use opportunities (*) available

Little Silver, NJ.• Locally obtained information

indicates that the township has plans to resurface the lots and install electronic parking collection systems

• Better management (restriping for increased use) will increase town revenue and available parking as well

• A single deck here would provide said revenue and also reduce train noise for the community adjacent to it

• Could gain 375 spaces

NLong Branch, NJ.

• Area Transit Oriented Redevelopment should be considered

• Consideration should be given to a county wide bus to rail intermodal opportunity study is recommended. This need can be supported by ticketing data reports if required. There is a 15 mile wide belt of densely packed population, needing better service, who would use our trains if offered the opportunity

• Sharing of lots 1 & 2 would gain 75-100 spaces

Station Accessibility & Parking North Jersey Coast Line (Outer) Parking Requirement

The outer segment of the Coast line has the smallest, per station ridership of any line in this segment. The inner segment of this line has 2,966 riders from only 3 stations while this segment counts 3,141 riders from 9 stations.

The parking Requirement in this segment is projected to be greater than 500, however anticipated gains at the stations in the first half of the segment will negate that.

• Asbury Park is a traditional destination on the Jersey Shore

• It has the position and opportunity to become a major transportation hub

• It is served by 4 buses, #’s 317, 832, 833, 834 and 835. The area needs better and more extensive local bus service

• This station has a high volume of intra-county ridership, enhanced bus service would increase this

• We need to acquire Lots 1 and 2 for our use and to negotiate shared use on Lots A, B and C

• Gain of 400 spaces
