OBITUARIES

Juan Antonio Lopez, better known as “Tony,” was born in Reading, Pennsylvania to parents Wilfredo “Freddie” Lopez and Ileana Cappas (Mathews) on Oct. 25, 1981. He was tragically and senselessly taken from his loved ones on Nov. 3, 2018. He was 37 years old. Tony moved to Kearny as a baby at just a year old. He grew up in Kearny where he attended school at Ray. He enjoyed life and everything it had to offer. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, but most of all he enjoyed his children. They were all he truly needed in life and he lived every single moment of his being just for them. Never did you see him without one, two, or possibly all five of his children hanging on him. He was and still is the true meaning of a father and exemplified how a father should be. Tony had many jobs throughout the years, most recent being an employee of ASARCO Hayden Smelter. Tony was a kind, gentle, and humble man. He always had a smile on his face. Very young in life he showed that anger, resentment, jealousy, and hate were things he wanted no part of. He always gave and showed others compassion, kindness, forgiveness, and love even when they were the ones causing his stress and heartache. Tony was preceded in death by his fathers Freddie Lopez Sr. and Jack Mathews, and cousin Maria Heidi Contreras.

Tony leaves behind his 5 children, Kiana, Jaydah, Nicholas, Darrion, and Celeste; his mother Ileana Mathews of Globe; his siblings, Freddie Lopez Jr. (Hope) of Phoenix, Yvette Montijo (Patrick) of Hayden, Reggie Lopez of Globe, Mannie Lopez of Kingman, Jose Lopez of Florence, and Juan Lopez of North Carolina. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Tony was loved and adored by everyone who knew him. He will be missed, but will never be forgotten. Services for Tony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018 at 11 a.m. They will take place in the Griffith Mortuary Chapel at 101 Johnston Dr. Kearny, AZ 85137. In lieu of flowers, there is an account for donations to his family set up at Ray Federal Credit Union, 112 Williams Lane, PO Box 1089, Kearny, AZ 85137. The Magma Smokestack in Superior came down at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10.James Carnes | Copper Area News

Magma Copper smelter chimney stack safely demolished

Superior, Arizona — (November 10, 2018) Resolution Copper’s demolition contractor has safely and successfully completed the controlled demolition of the Magma Copper smelter’s chimney stack, which was structurally unsound and posed a significant threat to safety. Resolution Copper’s number one priority is ensuring the health and safety of our employees and the community, and finalizing this latest phase of the 15-year reclamation effort is a vital step in fulfilling our commitment to health, safety and environmental stewardship. In addition to proactively addressing the safety threat posed by the crumbling chimney stack, it was also necessary to remove smelter structures in order to clean all contaminants out of the soil that had accumulated during five decades of the Magma Copper Company’s smelting operations, which started in 1924 and ended in 1971. Safe removal and cleanup of the smelter complex is a major milestone in Resolution Copper’s broader reclamation of the West Plant property adjacent to Superior, which began in 2005 and is on schedule for completion in 2020. “Being a good neighbor is extremely important to Resolution Copper. We are dedicated to making Superior a cleaner and safer place to live and work,” said Andrew Lye, Resolution Copper Project Director. “When the company took over the West Plant property in 2004, restoring the land was a top priority,

and the safe removal of the smelter was unfortunately required for us to finish the job. The Town of Superior has been an important partner throughout the reclamation process, and we’ll continue to coordinate our efforts with Superior’s public officials as we move forward.” Superior Mayor, Mila Besich offered the following statement: “As we bid farewell to the smelter stack, we are reminded of all that it has represented to generations of our citizens. It is an iconic reminder of every miner, engineer, craftsman and staff who have worked the Magma mine. It has been a symbol of our mining history, the industry that created Superior and the families which made Superior a community. We will miss seeing this important and historic structure from our skyline, but we also celebrate the new era that is before us today – a new mine, abundant economic and community development opportunities and our community working together to create greater opportunities for the benefit of all – not only for today, but for future generations. Superior’s best days are truly ahead of us, and together we will establish Superior’s growth and prosperity in the 21st century.” The next major phases in the West Plant reclamation project are:• Removal and disposal of contaminated debris in December 2018

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVEBy John Hernandez

Copper Area News

World War I propaganda

The World War I Battle Fought in ArizonaFollowing the

assassination of the Archduke Franz

Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie by a Bosnian Serb, tension grew between the countries of Serbia and Austria-Hungary. On July 28, 1914 Austria declared war on Serbia. This would lead to the major powers of Europe joining the conflict which we know as World War I. The United States would not enter the war until 1917 but in Globe, Arizona in 1914, a small battle of sorts would take place with ties to the European War. In 1914, there were quite a number of immigrants working in the United States. This included miners of many different ethnicities working in the mines in Globe. As the war approached, relationships between Austrian and Serbian workers dwindled. Many of the workers had families back in the old country. There was even

talk that if war broke out, many would return to their homelands to fight. When Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia, the tension turned into hostility on July 31. On August 1, 1914 the Bisbee Daily Review newspaper reported a “Race Clash At Globe”. The article said: “The first clash between Austrians and Serbians occurred tonight, resulting in many broken heads but no serious injuries, trouble is feared as the result of tense feeling between the two nationalities. 500 Austrians have notified their consul in Denver that they are ready to return home for war. 300 Servians are preparing to return to the fatherland.” The book, History of Mining in Arizona, said that the two nationalities “mixed it up in the International Saloon on Broad Street”. Ten days later, again at the same saloon, a bigger battle erupted. This time

they fought with fists, billiard sticks, beer bottles, rocks and clubs leaving the saloon in shambles. Forty Serbians and twenty Austrians were involved. The melee must have spilled out into Broad Street as it was reported that a large crowd of Globe citizens watched them fight. The Arizona

The 1A State Runners-Up, Hayden Lobos, pose with the trophy. Hayden hasn’t been in the finals since 1988. Phalicitee ‘Pinky’ Thomas | CBN

By Andrew LuberdaCopper Basin News

It’s been 46 years since Hayden won a football state championship. That was 1972, when the school was playing 11-man football. It had been 30 years – 1988 – since the Lobos last appeared in a championship game before last Saturday night at Maricopa High School, where they were defeated by Superior in the 2018 1A State Championship, 70 – 20. It won’t be another 30 years before Hayden’s next championship appearance. Heck, it might not be two. “The program is building,” fourth-year Hayden head coach John Estrada said after his team was presented with the

runner-up trophy. “Our junior-high program is teaching the same technique and fundamentals that we teach at high school. The future of Hayden; we’re back on the map. I predict we’re going to be here a few more times over the coming years.” Saturday’s game, the second meeting of the season between the two teams, was never in doubt after Lobos’ sophomore quarterback A.J. Castillo tied the game, 6 – 6, on a 73-yard touchdown run to cap off his team’s first possession. Superior outscored Hayden 64 – 6 the rest of the way, including 52 – 6 before halftime. “They’re an elite team,” Estrada said about the Panthers. “Their stud, Ybarra, he led that team to a championship.”

Unlike a Williams’ media outlet, which unfairly gave little to no credit to Lobos for their win against the Vikings in the semis a week ago, Estrada gave all the credit to his team for the transformation it made in just four years. He cited senior leadership, leading by example, and a commitment to learning the Lobos’ system, working in the weight room, and attending passing leagues over the summer as reasons behind his team’s success. “Four years ago, we won one game,” Estrada said. “With the four seniors that (we) had; from winning one game to making it to the championship when they’re seniors, that’s outstanding. A roster of 14 players four years ago grew

each year and included 28 players this season, setting the Lobos’ up for more success Estrada predicts. “I’m so proud of these kids on how far they came this year,” he said. “They represented their community, high school and parents well. Also, I would like to thank all the Lobo fans for their support all season.” Estrada was reminded of a quote by his former coach, Peter Guzman, after the Lobos’ defeat. “Making it to the championship, there’s no losers,” said Estrada, quoting Guzman. “Unfortunately, there can only be one winner.” The Lobos expect to be the “one” sooner than later.

Estrada: Lobos will be back sooner rather than later

Daily Star reported that “twenty one were injured, none fatally. Fifteen rioters were arrested. Many of the two nationalities are coming to the city and further trouble is feared.” Arizona was not the only state to see violence between the two nationalities. Los Angeles reported hundreds of Serbians and Austrians fighting in the streets with perhaps two fatalities. In Joliet, Illinois in the large foreign settlement of steel mill workers, a riot broke out. The riot started when several hundred Austrians invaded

a meeting of Serbians and jeered the speakers. Fights broke out with fists and clubs. It spilled into the street and revolvers were drawn and shots fired. World War I was a horrific war. The introduction of mechanized warfare, poison gas and aircraft led to many deaths. Military deaths by battle wounds or disease were 8,500,000. Of those 45,000 were Serbians and 1,200,000 Austrians. I wonder how many of those men fighting in the streets and saloons of Globe returned to their homelands to fight and die on the fields in Europe.

• Reclamation of surrounding soils in spring of 2019• Seeding and rehabilitation of smelter site in summer of 2019 Resolution Copper understands the cultural significance of the Magma Copper smelter complex for the Superior community, and the company is funding a study for a legacy project to commemorate the town’s rich mining history. Resolution Copper proactively sought this opportunity to work with the community, including residents and elected officials. Under an agreement with the Town of Superior, Resolution Copper will review three project proposals, which are based on several months of gathering feedback from residents on how they would like to see Superior’s mining history preserved. Resolution Copper is also funding major improvements to Superior’s US Highway 60 Park & Caboose Visitor Center, known for its feature landmark, a train caboose converted into a visitor center. Resolution Copper is collaborating with the Town of Superior on the park improvement project. The scope includes working with the Town to enhance the mining history trail, upgrading existing playground equipment to include new mining themed elements and landscaping. Another part of Resolution Copper’s ongoing effort to celebrate the history of the Magma Copper Company smelter has been the work of our contractor,WestLand Resources,

Inc. (WestLand). WestLand carried out detailed architectural documentation of the smelter, using an aerial drone to take high-resolution photographs and video of each structure. The drone imagery was processed with specialized computer software to generate both conventional architectural drawings of individual structures as well as three-dimensional models of selected buildings. The drawings and other documentation have been used to complete the standard Historic Property Inventory Forms for individual structures typically required by the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office. WestLand has consulted a wide variety of early maps, photographs, company records and other documents. These sources together provide a better understanding of when the different parts of the complex were built and used, along with new details on the smelter’s role in the history of both Magma Copper and the community of Superior. WestLand has also been conducting oral history interviews with former Magma employees who worked either at the smelter or in other parts of the Magma operation. The interviews have been recorded by a professional videographer, and excerpts of the recordings will be used to produce a video history of the smelter for public distribution. WestLand has presented its research in a series of public

meetings in Superior over the last few months. In addition, WestLand is working on a booklet about the history of the smelter that will include historic and recent maps and photographs. The smelter history booklet will be available for public distribution on December 21, 2018. In the interim, Resolution Copper has collaborated with the Town of Superior and Boyce Thompson Arboretum to celebrate the smelter’s connections to the community by displaying a collection of historical photographs of the smelter complex at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The exhibition, titled Images to Remember: The Magma Copper Company Smelter at Superior, consists of large reproductions of historic and recent photographs, a video display, maps and construction drawings of the smelter. The exhibition is installed in the Benson House at the Arboretum and will be open to the public free of charge from November 20, 2018, through May 20, 2019, during scheduled business hours (Fall-Winter hours: Monday-Sunday, 8 am to 5 pm, October thru April). For more information on viewing the smelter exhibition, contact Boyce Thompson Arboretum at (602) 827-3000.
