Chocolate pedicures: A sweet way to pamper your toesTampabay.comBy Ashley Grant, tbt* correspondentMay 20, 2011I have gotten pedicures before, but after hearing about a process known as a chocolate pedicure, I had to skip my traditional one and try it.

There are benefits to using chocolate for pampering, including the fact that it moisturizes and acts as an antioxidant to skin. I opted to go to Spa Moritz in New Tampa and was ecstatic to learn that with my pedicure I would receive a complimentary chocolate martini.

From the outside, Spa Moritz looked like a boring office, but when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. With the warm-colored walls and the columns framing the entryway, I felt like I had walked into a European spa.

After checking in, I was given a tour of the facilities and the option to change into a robe. To get the full spa experience I had booked a massage as well, so I changed and then went to the tranquility room. However, you don't have to get a massage to experience the room. With the pedicure, guests are permitted to relax in there, as well. In the tranquility room were refreshments — on this particular day it was cupcakes.

On to the manicure-pedicure room. My pedicurist was Jillian, and her personality was awesome. She was funny and personable and easy to talk to. It was like being pampered by an old friend.

The pedicure began with a warm chocolate foot bath. The aroma of the chocolate and the bubbles of the jets in the foot bath melted all of my stress away within minutes. Just as I was beginning to feel the calm come over me, I was presented with my chocolate martini. Delicious. Its smooth texture went down like chocolate milk, and in the bottom of the glass was a piece of chocolate for me to munch on while Jillian scrubbed my feet.

She used a cocoa scrub to wash and exfoliate my tootsies, and then it was time for my mask. I never had a mask on my feet before, but it was extremely moisturizing and felt so nice. The mask was, of course, infused with chocolate.

Following the mask Jillian massaged my feet with chocolate oil and then proceeded to dry my toes and apply nail polish.

My feet have never felt so good. My treatment delighted my senses, to say the least.

Armajaro brings farm inputs closer to cocoa farmersMyjoyonline.com 18 May 2011,

Licensed cocoa buying company, Armajaro Ghana, is financing the construction of ten cocoa depots in selected towns in the Ashanti, Bono Ahafo, Western and Central Regions.The initiative is to standardize the company’s depots which among others will also serve as purchasing outlets for good quality cocoa seedlings and other inputs for farmers.

Head of Administration, Seth Amoako Hammond, told Luv Business Report, the establishment of the farmers’ shops will save farmers the hustle of travelling to the cities to buy inputs. He said Armajaro, which is currently the third largest licensed buying company in Ghana, will continue to invest in farmers within its operational districts to increase cocoa yield. Mr. Hammond was opening one of such depots at Boako in the Western Region.

Armajaro currently employs over 6,000 people, and has a supply network of 120 thousand farmers.

The company’s license in the western corridors was withdrawn following revelation some of its staff were involved in cocoa smuggling.

Mr. Hammond said the company appreciates the implication of smuggling to the Ghanaian economy and would do everything to prevent it.

Cameroon cocoa prices dip, weather good for mid-cropReuters Africa May 16, YAOUNDE, May 16 (Reuters) - Cocoa farmgate prices in Cameroon have slipped in most growing areas since April amid thin buying interest ahead of the peak of the mid-crop, farmers said over the weekend.

Growing weather in the world's No. 5 cocoa producer, meawhile, was considered ideal, signaling robust volumes for the last part of the year-long season.

Cameroon's cocoa season runs from August 1 to July 31, with the main harvest period from October to January/February, and the mid-crop following that.

"What we are happy about is the very fine weather, characterised by little rainfall and plenty of sunshine, an indication that the mid-crop harvest may be good," said Emmanuel Nnogo Akolo from Emana in the Centre region, summing up the situation in all growing zones.

"As a result, there are almost no cases of the black pod disease this year. Moreover, this fine weather gives enough time to treat our farms, with the plants making maximum use of the pesticides, insecticides and fertilizer."

The country commercialised some 197,000 tonnes of cocoa beans in 2009/10. But reports so far show that the volume will be over 200,000 tonnes due to increase in output from improved, high-yielding variety seedlings distributed to farmers by the cocoa development authority SODECAO in 2006/07.

Cocoa exports by the end of February were 184,090 tonnes, up 22 percent from the same period a year ago. [COC/CM]

Europe cash cocoa: weaker in a thin tradeReuters Africa by Ivana SekularacMay 20, 2011 AMSTERDAM, May 20 (Reuters) - Europe's fresh cocoa prices fell in thin trade this week as buyers waited to learn more about the quality of Ivory Coast cocoa beans before making new purchases, traders said.

Ivory Coast, the world's top cocoa producer, resumed cocoa exports earlier this month after a disputed presidential election led to an export ban, European trade sanctions, a crippled banking system, and weeks of civil war.

Abundant rains which fell in Ivory Coast's cocoa-growing regions should enable a strong mid-crop until at least early August. [ID:nLDE74F1OV]

"The market is a bit boring and people expect it to go down because of fundamentals," one trader said.

"On the other hand we still don't know what the quality of the beans is. It is still pretty unsafe to send people there to look into it," he said.

Cocoa arrivals at Ivorian ports are running around 13 percent above last year's levels and deliveries are set to keep picking up, but security remains a problem up-country, exporters said on Friday.

Thousands of cocoa farmers who fled their fields during five months of conflict in Ivory Coast are too afraid of ethnic reprisals to go home, and many fear their plantations are either looted or rotting. [ID:nLDE74J0U3]

Ivory Coast differentials were at around 60 pounds over London nearby cocoa futures contracts LCCc1, 20 pounds down from last week.

"Now the main concern is getting logistics in Ivory Coast back to normal," another trader said.

"Also we should be getting the first indication about the new crop to be harvested in November, so the market is looking into it too." [nLDE74J0RT]

Cocoa purchases declared by private buyers to Ghana's Cocobod industry regulator hit 846,385 tonnes by May 5 since the start of the season in October.[ID:nLDE74G0WL].

Price ratios for cocoa butter, a key ingredient in chocolate, firmed to around 1.28 times London bean contracts <0#LCC:>, against 1.20.

"There is strong demand for cocoa butter now and ratios are higher," one trader said.

"The cocoa butter price is very low. The chances that prices could be significantly lower are very slim, so everyone is buying."

Cameroon's lone cocoa grinder buys 84 T in MarchReuters AfricaBy Tansa Musa May 17, 2011 YAOUNDE, May 17 (Reuters) - Sic-Cacaos, Cameroon's lone local cocoa beans grinder, bought 84 tonnes of beans in March, down from 424 tonnes the previous month, according to official tatistics from the firm on Tuesday.

The figure also represents a fall for the same month last year, when 136 tonnes were bought.

March volumes bring the total quantity of cocoa beans the company has bought since the August start of the 2010/11 seasonto 26,232 tonnes, up from 17,099 tonnes for the same period in 2009/2010.

Sic-Cacaos, a subsidiary of Swiss company Barry Callebaut (BARN.S: Quote), processes cocoa beans into cocoa powder, cocoa butter, cocoa cake and other bi-products sold in Cameroon, the CEMAC zone and Nigeria.

Dompok said the Malaysian cocoa industry had indeed demonstrated a successful transformation of the Malaysian commodity sector from a mere traditional producer of raw materials to an exporter of higher value-added products. He said Malaysia was no longer the main producer of cocoa beans but the country has been ranked as the largest cocoa grinder in the the Asia-Pacific region and the fifth biggest grinder in the world after Germany, the United States, Ivory Coast and the Netherlands.

Dompok said: "Though the industry has come a long way, I believe opportunities are still plentiful for our cocoa industry. "As the global society becomes more affluent, the demand for cocoa products is expected to increase." He also believed that the International Cocoa, Coffee and Comsumer Show 2011 was an additional factor and incentive to develop the related industries and facilitate entrepreneurs to explore business opportunities.

Cocoa almonds could get a natural flavour boost. Scientists have discovered a plant enzyme that can enhance the natural chocolate flavour in low-quality chocolate almonds. Use of the enzyme would result in less waste in the chocolate industry, because it would improve the chocolate flavour of even the poor-quality cocoa almonds (the seeds of the cocoa fruit).

A man in Wisconsin is celebrating his 25,000th Big Mac meal on Tuesday. It’s a dubious accomplishment, but Don Gorske, has been eating almost

two Big Macs a day since May 17, 1972. The Wisconsin man, who has obsessive-compulsive disorder, estimates he has also consumed over 200,000 Cokes along with the McDonald’s burgers, which contain 540 calories and 29 grams of fat.

The American corn industry is trying to sweeten up its image, and sugar producers are not happy about it. A lobbying group for several corn processors has been working to change the name “high-fructose corn syrup” — a sweetener used in soft drinks, ketchup, cereal, and other products — to “corn sugar.” In response, several big American sugar producers are suing, saying the name change is false advertising. High-fructose corn syrup has been associated with the rise in obesity in the U.S., but researchers say more information is needed before that link can be proven.

High blood pressure increases your risk of having a stroke, and a recent Dutch study into possible stroke triggers has identified eight new possible triggers. Coffee tops the list, followed by vigourous physical exercise and nose-blowing. Alcohol is also considered a risk factor, but the risk decreases quickly after consuption.
