The CoPA Departmental Application is required by all students applying to programs within the College of Performing Arts (Music,Theatre, and Dance) and must accompany the Common Application and Chapman Supplemental Application. The CoPA application isdesigned to showcase each applicant’s talents in relation to his/her specific major. An audition and supplemental materials are also required,and are detailed in the following pages. Please read carefully the set of instructions for your division of interest to ensure that yourapplication is completed correctly. Applicants are asked to apply for their top choice of major within CoPA and respond to thecorresponding steps for auditions and supplementary materials.

Requirements

All students must follow the specific instructions below for their division of interest (Conservatory of Music, Department of Dance, orDepartment of Theatre) for the following items: audition/interview, goal statement, letter of recommendation, resume, and photo. There maybe additional requirements for admitted students to determine placement in courses.

Dates and Deadlines

It is your responsibility to ensure all materials required to complete your application are received by the Office of Admission by theappropriate deadline. Admission decisions are not made until applications have been completed and processed in their entirety. Yourapplication is considered incomplete until you have completed your audition/interview.

Freshman Applicants Auditioning/Interviewing In-Person:• Early Action applicants must have auditions/interviews completed no later than December 1.• Regular Decision applicants must have auditions/interviews completed no later than March 1.

Transfer Applicants Auditioning/Interviewing In-Person:• Students seeking to transfer into the Spring semester must complete auditions/interviews by December 1. • Students seeking to transfer into the Fall semester must complete auditions/interviews by March 1.

Electronic Submissions:All videos and accompanying materials submitted electronically must be uploaded no later than March 1.

General Audition Information

Audition/interview appointments for all CoPA majors must be reserved online. The sites for each division are as follows:

Please note times fill up quickly. When all times are filled, prospective students should call their division of interest directly to be added thethe waitlist or electronically submit a video audition.

Electronic Auditions

Applicants are encouraged to audition/interview in person whenever possible. If a live audition is not possible, an applicant may upload aprerecorded video audition or portfolio (technical theatre and composition applicants only) and the accompanying materials. Recordedauditions should follow the same guidelines for live auditions as specified by each division. Edited live performance videos are notacceptable. Videos should include an introduction, a brief discussion of your performing experience, and answer to the question “Why do youwant to attend Chapman?” Before beginning your performance, please also speak the title of your piece and the author, composer, orchoreographer. Students auditioning by video upload may also be interviewed by phone at the discretion of the division if further informationis needed. Talent Awards

Applicants to all CoPA majors are automatically considered for talent awards. Talent awards are offered to new incoming CoPA majors only.

Conservatory of Music

Music Audition Information

Instrumental:All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance, the Bachelor of Music in Music Education –Instrumental Emphasis, or the Bachelor of Arts in Music should visit the Conservatory of Music Web site for a detailed listing of auditionrequirements, by instrument: http://www.chapman.edu/admission/music/auditionInfo.asp.

Guitar:All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance, the Bachelor of Arts in Music, or theBachelor of Music in Music Education – Instrumental Emphasis with guitar as their primary performing medium, should prepare twoselections of contrasting styles from standard repertoires, performed from memory. Selections chosen should demonstrate the applicant’s abilityin phrasing, sustained playing, and technical facility.

Piano:All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, the Bachelor of Music in Performance – KeyboardCollaborative Arts, or the Bachelor of Arts in Music, should prepare three of the four following piano works, performed from memory:

1. J.S. Bach Prelude and Fugue or Suite2. One Movement of a Classical Sonata3. Romantic Piece4. Impressionist, 20th Century, or Contemporary Piece

The auditioning student may also be asked to sight read and play major and minor scales and arpeggios.

Vocal:All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, the Bachelor of Music in Music Education – VocalEmphasis, or the Bachelor of Arts in Music should prepare two vocal selections, performed from memory. The audition pieces can be arias orart songs in any language. Musical theatre, jazz or pop selections are not acceptable for audition. An accompanist will be provided, pleasebring sheet music. The auditioning student may also be asked to vocalize and sight read during the audition.

Composition:All students seeking admission into the Bachelor of Music in Composition should upload scores in PDF format and audio recordings ofperformed works with the CoPA Departmental Application. Candidatesmust also audition on their primary instrument: voice, keyboard, guitar, or orchestral instrument (see above requirements).

Conducting Audition:All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Performance with an emphasis in Conducting, either Instrumental orChoral, must audition on their primary instrument: voice, keyboard, guitar or orchestral instrument (see above requirements).

Music Portfolio Information

Please either upload these items with your application or bring with you to your audition. Be sure to include your name, address, telephonenumber, e-mail address, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your CommonApp ID (if available) at the top of all of thefollowing items.

Goal StatementWrite an up to one-page statement briefly describing your musical experience, the area of emphasis you wish to pursue, why you wish topursue it, and why you would like to study at Chapman. Conclude your essay with a description of your future dreams, goals and intentions.

One Letter of RecommendationInclude at least one letter of recommendation from your most recent music instructor.

Music RésuméSubmit a music résumé that highlights your musical training, experiences and/or performances.

PhotoIt is optional to submit a photo to identify you. Professional headshots are not necessary.

Department of theatre

Theatre Audition Information

Acting or Directing Emphasis: Prepare two monologues totaling not more than three minutes. One should be classical, preferably from awork of Shakespeare, and the other should be contemporary (not from a screenplay). It is recommended that you choose pieces that are ageappropriate. Please do not use dialects, props or costumes. Monologue performances will be evaluated on preparation, use of language andtext, clear intention and purpose, sense of truth, emotional connection and availability, and range of vocal and physical expressiondemonstrated.

Theatre Technology Emphasis: Prepare a technical/design portfolio of your production work to bring with you. Your portfolio should consistof 5 to 10 pieces of your technical or design work that demonstrate your experience in areas of particular interest and the range of your skills.If you have technical drawings or drafts, present them along with a pictorial representation of the executed drawings. Beginning technicianswho do not have a portfolio of their drawings may use photographs or their résumé to show the work they have done. Plan to spend 20-30minutes in your portfolio interview. Portfolios will be evaluated on creativity, ability to communicate the artistic and creative process, range ofskills demonstrated, and potential for growth.

All incoming theatre majors begin in the BA Theatre program. Auditions for the BFA programs in Theatre Performance and ScreenActing are held for current students only.

On the day of your audition:Arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to allow time to find the office and warm up. For acting auditions, dressprofessionally in clothing and footwear that does not restrict your movement.

Items to Bring to Your Theatre Audition

Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, the last four digits of your Social Security number and yourCommonApp ID (if available) at the top of all of the following items.

Goal Statement Write a goal statement up to one page in length, briefly describing your theatre experience, the area of emphasis you wish to pursue (BAActing/Directing, BA Technology, BFA Theatre Performance or BFA Screen Acting), why you wish to pursue it, and why you would like tostudy at Chapman.

One Letter of Recommendation The letter should come from your most recent theatre instructor or professional with whom you have worked.

Theatre Résumé This should include your training, teachers, performance and backstage experience. Include the names of theatres and directors you haveworked with, as well as any media work you have done. You may want to include awards and any summer scholarships you have received.

PhotoAll we need is a photo to identify you. Professional headshots are not necessary.

Department of Dance

Dance Audition Information

Prepare a 2-4 minute dance solo demonstrating a wide range of your dance technique and artistry. It may be a dance you choreographed or adance someone has choreographed for you. (Please be sure to credit the choreographer.) If you have skills in more than one dance form (jazz,modern, ballet, tap, etc.) you may wish to present two separate shorter pieces to demonstrate your talent. Technical prowess, presence,musicality, expression and performance quality will be evaluated to determine admittance to the Department of Dance as well as talent awards.

On the day of your audition:• Arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time and warm up.• Bring your music on CD or iPod. If you are burning your own CD, be sure the music is saved in a .wav format.• Wear a leotard and tights or other form-fitting clothes with appropriate shoes. Please do not wear skirts, T-shirts, shorts, sweats or costumes.

Items to Bring to Your Dance Audition

Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and yourCommonApp ID (if available) at the top of all of the following items.

Goal Statement Write a goal statement up to one page in length, highlighting your educational and career goals. For example: Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
