ANZAC Day 2013 marked the 98th Anniversary of the land-ing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gal-lipoli in 1915 and we honoured all our service men and womenwho lost their lives at war.

This year, we especially commemorated the 10,000 Aus-tralian prisoners of war who worked on the construction ofBurma – Thailand Railway, where at least 2,815 Australianslost their lives.

Construction of the notoriously difficult Hellfire Pass, thelargest section of rock cutting along the line, began in April1943. Australian and other allied prisoners of war worked 18hours a day on the cutting. The railway was completed butbombed by the Royal Air Force in the Burma Campaign.

The Anzac spirit was born 98 years ago, far from home,when our brave soldiers landed at Gallipoli. On that day alone,approximately 2000 Australians were killed or wounded in

the fight to end all wars. It is said that on this day Australiatruly earned the right to be called a nation. The heroism ofthe men at Anzac Cove earned Australia respect and honour.

As we commemorated Anzac Day, we remembered withgratitude the service and sacrifice of those first Anzacs. Wealso remembered the hundreds of thousands of Australiandefence personnel who have served in wars and conflictsand as peace keepers since that time.

As a strong, democratic nation, much is expected of Aus-tralia and its armed forces in trouble spots around the world– and in the spirit of Anzac our servicemen and women con-tinue to make our country proud. We think especially onthis day of those continuing to serve in Afghanistan, inconstant danger of their lives.

We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to these Austral-ians and Anzac Day is their special day and our opportunity

to honour them and ensure that their service is never forgot-ten.

Anzac Day commemorations help younger Australians togain a greater appreciation of our wartime history and herit-age and the role war has played in shaping our nation andsecuring peace. All young Australians should understandthe Anzac story to ensure that it is passed down to futuregenerations.

IT’S been a busy start to 2013 for Cooroy Cubs,Scouts and Venturers.

In March, a ‘Going Up Ceremony’ was held at theCooroy Scout Den to celebrate the progression ofthose youth members who were moving up to an-other section.

Those ‘going up’ included Robert, Jarod and Quinnwho moved up to Venturer Scouts from Scout Sec-tion and Kove, Macklin and Rex who moved up tothe Scout Section from Cubs.

Cubs have also been busy completing their ‘GreyWolf Awards’. Pictured below is Kove who sculptedthese beautiful Jungle Book figures as part of hisGrey Wolf Award activities – congratulations Kove!

Scouts has resumed again (after a 2 week breakover the school holidays) and key group activitiesfor term 2 will include: Anzac Day when leaders andscouts will attend the Anzac Day Dawn Service andmarch in the parade; the first car boot sale for 2013which will be held on 26th May; and participation inthe Cooroy Fusion Festival and Woodworker’s Expo.Cooroy Scouts are also currently running a rafflefundraiser with a $5000 first prize. SUNSHINE Coast Council’s Cooroy Li-

brary has set a new benchmark for publiclibrary design by winning the Gabriel PooleAward for Building of the Year at the 2013Sunshine Coast Regional ArchitectureAwards on 22 March 2013.

Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellingtonsaid the state-of-the-art Cooroy Library hadtaken out top honours for its environmen-tally sustainable design by Brewster HjorthArchitects.

“The Cooroy Library is an important ele-ment in the fabric of the local community.Not only is the library used as a recreationand information resource, it is also a ter-rific facility for community meetings andinterpersonal gatherings,” Cr Wellingtonsaid.

Brewster Hjorth Architects, known fortheir contemporary designs for public li-braries and public spaces, worked with thecommunity to develop the award winningCooroy Library design.

The winning projects will progress to thecoveted Queensland Architecture Awardsto be announced in Brisbane on 21 June2013.

Flavour trail inMary Valley

THERE’S a new gauge in Conondale that

provides rainfall and water level informationfor locals along the upper Mary River duringwet weather events.

Rainfall is measured in the field at Conondaleand the information is transmitted, as it hap-pens, to council in the Local Disaster Coordi-nation Centre and onto the Bureau of Mete-orology (BOM).

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said thewater level recorded at the gauge can adviseif the bridge at Conondale is flooded.

“The gauge provides additional informationabout the upper Mary River catchment thatcomplements the data collected from ourgauges at Bell Bird Creek, Kenilworth andMoy Pocket,” Cr McKay said.

“Together the gauges provide our hydrolo-gists with a comprehensive picture of how aflood peak travels along the upper Mary River.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson saidboth council and the BOM currently main-tain 71 rain and stream gauges across theregion.

“We’ve got resilient communities alongthe upper Mary and council’s recent invest-ment in the gauge network and flood map-ping of the upper Mary demonstrates coun-cil’s commitment to these communities,” CrRogerson said. “I hope the information ishelpful to the upper Mary communities whenmaking decisions during flood events.

“In addition to the Conondale gauge coun-cil is installing three more stations at KinKin, Pomona and Nambour.”

Art Carnivale, Danielle Taylor, is calling onlocal singers, dancers, jugglers, stiltwalkers, and street performers to getinvolved in this year’s event, taking placein Eumundi on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12May.

“The Australian Body Art Carnivale isrenowned as a real festival of colour – afun-filled community event,” says Danielle.“We’re keen to create opportunities forlocal performers to entertain the arts-lovingcrowd throughout the weekend, and themore buskers and performers, the better!”

“We’ll program performers to take to theMain Stage or set up in busking pitchesacross the Carnivale site, but we need themto register first so we can program them in– and create a comfortable place for them toperform,” says Danielle.

SUNSHINE Coast Council Division 12 representa-tive, Tony Wellington, will again be holding a se-ries of “open office” opportunities throughout hiselectorate early next month. He will make himselfavailable at five localities so that residents can comeand speak with him directly.

“I held open offices last November where I metwith many residents and discussed a broad rangeof local issues,” he said. “These open offices up-hold the commitment I made during my electioncampaign to be available to everyone. A COMMEMORATIVE jam made by Noosa

District State High School’s Home Economics,Agricultural Science, Art and Hospitality stu-dents will be sold and distributed as a part ofthe school’s 50th celebrations this month.

The jam has been made with fruits grown atthe school’s farm, including rosellas, which isthe main ingredient. The jam is the product ofhighly collaborative classroom activities acrossa number of year levels.

I was recently approached by atradesman who was seekinginformation on what he wasrequired to do to secure someloose items in his ute. Uponchecking the legislation and theDepartment of Transport website, Ifound the requirements to be veryvague. In Parliament on April 17, Iasked the Minister for Transportand Main Roads if he would sendout a single page guideline to theowners of all vehicles and trailers,so that they know what theirrequirements are in relation tosecuring any items they arecarrying. Sadly the Ministeradvised that the onus was ondrivers to know the rules andregulations and did not supportmy request. I believe the Minsteris being unreasonable, as I believemany people would have differingopinions on what is required tosecure an item. I intend to pursuethis with the Government.

Lyme disease in Australia

On April 16, I spoke in Parliamenton the plight of one of my con-stituents who has been diagnosedwith Lyme Disease.

Lyme disease is believed to bespread through tick bites, but hasnot been officially recognised inAustralia.

I provided the Minister for Healthwith a copy of a letter detailing thisyoung lady’s battle with thisdisease and I urged our govern-ment to listen to calls for betterdiagnosis and recognition of thisimportant disease and hopefullytake the matter up with ourinterstate government colleagues.

PCMC and phone problems

As a member of the ParliamentaryCrime and Misconduct Committee Ispent almost every day of the pastmonth at meetings both in Bris-bane and via teleconference in myoffice. The Committee was investi-gating the unauthorised release ofsome Fitzgerald Inquiry documentsand the shredding of others.

At first I thought it was a greatidea because we often hear of badtenants who take the system forgranted while so many others areon the waiting list.

While we must ensure our publichousing tenants are good tenantswe do not want to see peoplebeing threatened with evictionover petty issues.

For example an elderly tenantwas issued with a breach noticebecause her friend, who pickedher up to go shopping and takeher on outings, parked in a spaceset aside for tenants. This was inspite of the fact that the parkingspace was not needed by othertenants. I also heard from anelderly gentleman who put adecorative border around agarden and was told that if he didnot remove it, he would be issuedwith a breach.

These Gestapo like tacticsshould not be used against ourfrail elderly and the disadvan-taged.

Nambour Rail Duplication not apriority for LNP

It is obvious that the Premierand his Government do notconsider the duplication of therailway line from Brisbane toNambour worth fighting for.

Recently in Parliament I askedthe Premier to table a copy of hisrequest to the Prime Minister forfinancial assistance for thisproject. He replied he hadn’traised this matter with the PrimeMinister but his Government hadmade a submission regarding theBeerburrum to Landsborough railduplication.

There is no way the FederalGovernment is going to doanything about this much neededupgrade unless there is hardlobbying from the State Govern-ment.

Once again the NewmanGovernment has ignored theresidents of the Sunshine Coast.

ON 25 October 1911, Mr AndrewFisher, Prime Minister and Treasurer,introduced into the Federal Parliamentthe Commonwealth Bank Bill.Through almost universal support theBill was passed on Friday 22 Decem-ber 1911. The capital of the Bank wasnominally fixed at £1,000,000 but infact it had no capital – only the guar-antee of the Commonwealth Govern-ment.

On 15 July 1912, the Savings Bankopened its doors at 10am. The firstperson to open an account was thePrime Minister, Mr Andrew Fisher.The first branch of CommonwealthBank of Australia was at ModernChambers, 317 Collins Street, Mel-bourne.

The Cooroy Post Office started op-erating as an agency of the SavingsBank Department of the Common-wealth Bank on 16 September 1912.On this day the Commonwealth Bankfirst opened for business in Queens-land with offices at Edward Street Bris-bane and agencies at 194 Queenslandpost offices.

Cooroy Branch opened on Monday27 May 1963 in leased shop premisesin Main Street, Cooroy, as a SavingsBank branch only. The premises werea double fronted, iron roofed, timberbuilding, previously occupied by theNifty Thrifty grocery store, situatedbetween a café and a draper shop. Onthe opening of the branch, agenciesat Cooroy (Springs Pharmacy &Cooroy Post Office), Boreen Point(Private Agency) and Pomona (PostalAgency), were transferred to the newoffice from Gympie branch, along with

school savings accounts at Cooroy, CartersRidge, Pomona, Tinbeerwah, Federal and StPatrick’s Convent Pomona.

During 1981, a property in Maple Street thatwas being used as a Draper’s shop and wassituated two doors down from the existingbranch premises, was purchased as a site fornew premises. On 23 July 1981, Cooroybranch was converted to FULL branch sta-tus – offering both Savings and Trading Bankbusiness. By this time branch staff numbershad increased to four.

On 11 July 1983, Cooroy branch operationstransferred to the newly built branch premisesat 32 Maple Street, Cooroy Qld.

The Cooroy Branch has been part of all majorbanking initiatives over the years. These in-clude:-

· A mechanisation strategy in the early1960’s that replaced the hand recording meth-ods that had been in operation since thebranch first opened;

· Introduction of the decimal currencyin 1966;

· Introduction of Personal Loans in 1967and Christmas Club Accounts in 1969;

· Introduction of the “Black Light” Sig-nature System in 1969 – this involved record-ing an invisible signature in passbooks ena-bling customers to withdraw from branchesother than their own without making prior

arrangements;· Office records commenced being main-

tained by computer in 1973;· In 1974, the Commonwealth Bank

joined 8 other Australian banks in establish-

ing Bankcard;· In 1984, the Bank introduced the Com-

monwealth Bank MasterCard – its own creditcard facility offering similar conditions toBankcard with the added advantage of world-wide usage;

· The 1980’s also introduction of tech-nology such as EFTPOS and automatic tell-ing facilities. The first Commonwealth BankATM machine was installed at the GympieBranch in July 1985; and

· On-Line services were launched inDecember 1995.

Since its inception, the Commonwealth Bankin Cooroy has played an important part inthe local community. As far back as WWII,the Cooroy branch was involved in raisingfunds and acted as an agent for meat andclothing rationing authorities. The CooroyBranch staff remain actively involved in rais-ing funds and awareness for Breast Cancer,Legacy, Prostate Cancer, Junior Cricket, TheClown Doctors and many other organisa-tions.

DUE to some very skilful crime scene ex-amination by the local Forensic Crime Unitand some excellent policing skills by CooroyPolice who apprehended an offender closeto the offence location in possession of evi-dence that tied him to the scene, police havenow apprehended a 16 year old youth for theBreak and Enter of the Cooroy Junior RugbyLeague Club. Another co-offender is stillbeing sought for this offence so this is a verypleasing result for both the police and theclub. The second break and enter at the clubis still being investigated with very strongand irrefutable forensic evidence currentlybeing analysed. The evidence is such that itis a certainty that an offender will eventuallybe apprehended as the various forensic databases in use by police agencies throughoutthe nation are permanent data bases and allcrime scene analysis results are permanentlystored and continually updated.

An interesting story springs to mind whenI was first transferred to Cooroy. Two youthswere creating havoc around town with breakins of shops etc and we were only able tosolve a small portion of these offences. Evenback then, police relied heavily upon crimescene forensic analysis and numerous bitsof evidence were located at the time andstored. Seven years later when the youthshad become adults in the eyes of the law andhad their DNA and fingerprints taken thesesamples were automatically compared to thecrime scenes at Cooroy seven years prior andbingo, perfect matches. Of course the offend-ers were now adults so had to front court asadults and be punished as adults. This is anexample of the long arm of the law in actionand I have no doubt that the same will applyin many of the current matters being investi-gated in Cooroy.

behaviour. I’m glad my plea did not fall ondeaf ears. Last week a group of drunkenyouths were observed to be making their wayacross town and whilst doing so they werecreating a disturbance by using loud obsceneand insulting language which culminated inthe gang targeting and attempting to assaulta lone youth sitting at a bus stop. Police werecalled and arrived within a minute of the re-port coming in. Of course the youths statedthat they had done no wrong but with thevery good witness accounts of the incidenttwo of the youths were arrested for their be-haviour and conveyed to a police watchhouse to be dealt with. If it wasn’t for thewilling witness versions supplied by themany onlookers’ police would not have hadthe evidence to apprehend the youths soplease keep reporting this bad behaviour asthere is an absolute zero tolerance for thistype of behaviour in Cooroy.

In another incident a youth was appre-hended after a shop keeper reported himswearing and insulting people as he walkedup the street which then culminated in himthrowing a glass bottle and smashing it intoa garden. Again Police were called and hewas apprehended on the evidence suppliedby a witness who had enough pride in thiscommunity to report the youth and not justturn a blind eye.

I would like to still encourage people todownload the Cooroy App as it looks like wecan now claim our first community arrest (forwant of a better term). To celebrate the up-grade, the pharmacy isoffering customers 10cent prints for 10 days,starting from today un-til Friday 10th May.

In a recent visit fromFujifilm headquarters, itwas revealed that thePharmacy’s processor isthe most well main-tained machine on theSunshine Coast. “Bettermaintenance equalshigher quality prints”said Malcolm Hewitt, aPhotographic Techni-cian at the Pharmacy.

“There’s a lot of sub-par photo labs operat-ing out there, includinglabs in our local area”Malcolm said. “We’rereally committed to pro-viding the best serviceand assistance to ourcustomers while main-taining excellent printquality.”

THIS year the annual Rugfest event hasbeen relocated to Pomona, due to the over-whelming success of previous years inTewantin. Pomona Memorial Hall, with itsgreater seating capacity, offers a more com-fortable venue for increasing numbers.

For months the ladies from the CatholicCommunity of St Patrick’s, Pomona havebeen meeting weekly to construct beautifulwoollen rugs and waggas.

True to the traditional nature of the Wagga,materials used have often been recycled fromunwanted clothing from Opp Shops or founddeep in the cupboards of friends and fami-lies. Many hours of unpicking, designingand stitching have gone into this project,resulting in a variety of very attractive andvery warm rugs.

manipulated into designs very appealing tothe eye. As well as looking good these rugsare usually over 75% pure wool making themextremely cosy – just right for the chillynights we have begun to experience re-cently.

These busy Hinterland ladies are pleasedto do their bit not only for the disadvan-taged by raising the funds for the VinniesWinter Appeal, but also for the environmentby using recycled materials. Of course, useof these rugs will also lessen the need forheating in homes, thus saving electricitycosts and resources.

To this end, a luncheon, prepared by thePomona Parish ladies, will be held on Satur-day, 1st June in the Pomona Memorial Hall .Tickets for $20 can be purchased at theTewantin parish Office, Weekend masses,

Pomona Post Office, or at the door onthe day. Each ticket entitles you to de-licious homemade soup with crustybread, tea/coffee and sweets, 15 raffletickets, as well as delightful musical en-tertainment. A minimum of 25 rugs willbe raffled separately (cent sale style)during the event. Extra raffle tickets canbe purchased during lunch.

There will also be an abundant arrayof vintage linen and buttons for sale.This stall has proved very popular withcollectors and sewers in previous years.

DHOM’S Kitchen will be open on Moth-er’s Day for lunch and dinner on Sunday 12May. A three course lunch menu for $25 perperson will be available which will include aspecial mixed entree platter, and choices of amain course and a desert. A la carte diningwill also be available.

Dhoms Kitchen will commence offeringcooking demonstrations in June. Dhom andSpencer have previously taught classes atBlack Pearl Epicure Cooking School in Bris-bane. The first class will introduce partici-pants to the techniques and ingredients ofThai cuisine with several dishes being pre-sented. At the end of the class participantswill sit down together with Dhom and Spen-cer to sample the delicious array of dishesdemonstrated. Hands-on classes are plannedfor later in the year.

Dhoms Kitchen’s duck dishes are the mostpopular on the menu at the moment. “Dur-ing the recent local lychee season we madea roast duck curry with lychees and cherrytomatoes” says Spencer. “Other duck dishesthat are popular are roast duck stir fried withyoung ginger and roast duck salad withcherry tomatoes, Asian celery and cashewnuts.”

Dhom and Spencer source their fresh or-ganic ducks from Bendele farm in Kilkivan.Their method of preparation is quite simplecompared to preparing Peking Duck, thoughstill involves a number of steps. The ducks

are marinated overnight in soy sauce, ricewine, ginger, and several Chinese spices. Theduck cavity is then filled with a special mix-ture of herbs and spices and stitched up. Theducks are briefly blanched in hot water toseal the skin and then a glaze is applied andthey are air-dried in the refrigerator for sev-eral hours before roasting. A special stockreduction is made from the roasted boneswhich are used to flavour dishes.

Inaddition to this important function, inwomen who are pregnant or have had ababy, they are vital for minimising thestrain placed on the lower back whilepregnant, and help to re-gain abdominaltone post pregnancy. A lot of womenperform sit-ups diligently, but still have thetell-tale “pot belly” in the lower abdomendue to the lack of tone and endurance inthe core muscles. The deep abdominal“core” muscles do not just return to normalfunction after they have been stretched,cut (caesarean section) or inhibited bymoderate to severe back pain. They needspecific exercises which can be taught toyou by a physiotherapist or other suitablyqualified fitness professional. The up-sideto getting your core muscles working againis that the overall tone of your abdomenwill improve, along with your posture.

The other essential health area for womento be aware of is their pelvic floor. Mostwomen have heard of pelvic floor exercisesbut aren’t exactly sure of what they need todo and if they are doing it correctly. Thereare also some myths surrounding whetheror not they should be performed whilepregnant.

The pelvic floor muscles are a sling ofmuscles which run from the tail bone at theback, through to the pubic bone at thefront of the pelvis. The openings for thebladder, womb and bowel, all pass throughthe pelvic floor muscles, which are essen-tial for the optimal functioning and support

It isessential for all women, regardless of theirage, to understand how to correctlyperform a pelvic floor contraction, andensure that they exercise the musclesregularly, especially when pregnant andfollowing the birth. Like any muscle, if youdon’t use it, you lose it. This is even moreimportant as we age, as the hormoneeffects contribute to muscle weakness.Weak pelvic floor muscles can contributeto prolapses, incontinence and urgencysymptoms in the bladder and bowel.

The “core” and “floor” (pelvic floormuscles) work together to provide asupport network to the trunk from aroundand below. Squeezing up your pelvic floorwhile you are training your core musclescan assist the core muscles to work.However, if you suffer from pelvic floorweakness or incontinence, it is importantto ensure you are performing an adequatepelvic floor contraction before doing coreexercises, otherwise, more strain can beplaced on the already weak pelvic floor.The good news is that pelvic floor weak-ness and incontinence can often bemanaged by a physiotherapist who hashad extra training in assessing and treatingconditions of the pelvic floor. Core muscleexercises can be provided by a physi-otherapist, or suitably qualified health/fitness professional.

DO you want to be involved in the commu-nity and be part of a group that’s role is topromote and improve the Mill Place precinct.

I have been a member of the Cooroy LowerMill Board since 2004. Before the board wasformed a group of Cooroy community peo-ple formed a task force to negotiate with thestate government for the best compensationfor Cooroy after the Mill closure. This groupwas responsible for securing the land we nowknow as Mill Place for the community. Since2004 the Cooroy Lower Mill Board has beeninvolved in the planning and developmentof this community precinct.

Being involved in this process has beenextremely satisfying, to know that I havehelped create a community space that can beused and enjoyed by all. Working with myfellow board members and along side theformer Noosa council and the Sunshine coastRegional Council has been a developmental

THE Rotary Club of Noosa has been extremely busy over the past 4weeks moving furniture out of The Sheraton Noosa.

This furniture has been stored at the Old Bunning’s Warehouse readyto be transported up to Bundaberg for distribution out to the flood vic-tims who lost everything in the recent floods. So far the Rotary Club hasbeen able to send 6 truckloads of this furniture up North.

U/7 White were on fire at a steamymatch against Nambour. The littlefellas are improving in the ruck areaand learning good ball skills. Royproved to be a tackling machine tak-ing on players twice his size earninghim player of the match.

U/8 Gold , had great team effort. Webought what we learnt on Thursdayinto the game and showed skill andclass with rapping up the ball and nu-merous off loads. Charles was cau-tioned several times who was findingit hard to tackle below the eyebrows,with a bit more practice I’m sure hewill be fine. Maddy fought the toughest fight of her career inthe Main Senior Female bout of the night whenshe took on local girl, Sue Lauifata in what wasdescribed as the fight of the night.

“Both girls stepped up a level tonight and had todig deep and box smart to beat local girls in frontof their home crowd,” said coach Mark Evans.

“Fighting main event bouts this early in their ca-reer is an awesome achievement & both girls roseto the occasion in emphatic fashion. I am soo proudof them both.”

The Demons (based out of Pomona)have had another great to start to the2013 season.

Senior team beat the unbeaten Glass-house by 110-40 last Saturday, puttingthem second in the ladder with 2 winsand a single loss. They are lookinggreat this year with a lot of new younglegs combining with the older headsto field one of the best looking teamsfor a number of years.

Masters (over 38) have had a coupleof games already with a narrow loss toHervey Bay followed by a not so nar-row loss to Sandgate. As always it isunlimited bench and the older states-men have unlimited bench and so arelooking to recruit more players andkeep that bench full to give everyonea breather (call Phil on 0412 675 374).

Under 8’s and Under 10’s had a bigcarnival to start the season off downin Kawana.

While there is no official scores andthe emphasis is on fun all parents keepa mental note in their heads and wecan safely say our U10’s team werethe champions of the carnival andshowed great courage and skill forsuch a young team. U8’s had a greatday as the new kids on the block andall enjoyed themselves, but still a fewshort so please if your kid wants toplay (no matter the skill level) pleasecontact us at the club.

the season off with a big win down atNorthshore but last week just fell awaya bit with a loss down at Nambour. Stillthe team is looking excellent and itsonly the start of the season.

Under 14’s mirrors the U12’s. Greatnumbers and a great looking team fol-lowing on from their big grand finalwin last year. They too had a great winover Northshore in round 1 and thenput up a gutsy fight against Kawanato narrowly lose.

Finally to the under 16’s who had abye in round 1 and then last week wenton to beat Glasshouse away. Team wasunder strength and in first quarter thetalls for Glasshouse were dominatingthe game.

Then coach Andy did a fewpositional changes and the team be-gan to gel. By half time the Demonshad taken back the lead and then by ¾time the game was out of sight forGlasshouse with the final quarter be-ing a complete blitz by the Demons.Big win for an undermanned Demonsside against a strong Glasshouse team,some special mentions to skipperAaron and Billy T who really playedabove and beyond plus of courseLuke G who slotted 6 for the day. Infact everyone deserves a mention fora good win and commiserations toChris who went down early on and willbe out for a few weeks.
