RECENT Queenslandfloodwaters are makingtheir way to the sea anda turbid cloud of sus-pended sediment, flot-sam and jetsam will bevisible for some time.

Stormwater pollutionis the most significantsource of potential deg-radation to local water-ways.

What’s not always vis-ible however, are thechemicals we use ineveryday life and minuteweed seed that has alsobeen transported by themass of water.

Regular monitoring ofstormwater outfalls andeducational activitieswithin catchments arepractical ways of ensur-ing that stormwater isnot polluted.

Noosa IntegratedCatchment Association(NICA) is calling forvolunteers to assist inits Stormwater Monitor-

The Cooroy township stormwater education projecting and EducationProject.

Free training will beprovided to undertaketasks such as learningthe positions ofstormwater outlets in theNoosa-Cooroy area; talk-ing to local people aboutthe stormwater system;drain stenciling at keysites; and assistance inusing specialised testingequipment to takemonthly water samples.

The Cooroy TownshipStormwater Educationproject is geographicallydivided into three keyareas for consideration. The proposed areas in-clude: The central busi-ness district, Maple St/Emerald St; The indus-trial area in the North-west, off Mary RiverRoad; Businesses onthe eastern side of therailway line.

Objectives of theproject are: Making con-

tact with businesses andgauging potential pollu-tion impacts on thecatchment of CooroyCreek, and raising aware-ness on mitigating meas-ures; Advising busi-nesses of their legal re-sponsibilities in relationto stormwater quality;Producing printed edu-cation brochure and dis-tribution; Producing avoluntary (and anony-mous) contact list forfuture correspondence;Building valuable rap-port with local businesspeople and facilitatingopen lines for future cor-respondence; Stencilingdrain inlet structure toraise public awareness.

Outcomes of theproject include: Assess-ment of industrialstormwater awarenessregarding location of in-lets and end point ofstormwater lines, grosspollutant trap locations

newsCOOROY RAG

DURING the past week, the Cooroy Ragoffice has received several phone calls fromboth parents and students of Noosa Dis-trict State High School expressing theirconfusion with the current school uniformcode.

The following is information obtainedfrom Mr Greg Peach, Education Queens-land, Regional Director, North Coast Re-gion:

School communities, through their P&Cs,determine dress codes for students follow-ing Education Queensland policy. Accept-able uniform and dress standards are ex-pected to be maintained by students, andthe support of parents is sought in thisregard.

With regards to school shoes, NoosaDistrict State High School’s Uniform Policyclearly states that due to Workplace Healthand Safety considerations students’ foot-wear must provide adequate protection andcover the entire foot. All students mustwear totally black leather or vinyl shoes.Suede, canvas and slip-ons are not accept-able, and shoe laces must be black with no

Uniform code start students off on the wrong footcoloured markings on the shoes.

The Policy states that make up and nailpolish are not to be worn to school, exceptfor students who have specific skin condi-tions.

Students wearing make-up are requiredto remove it.

The Policy states that the wearing of jew-ellery is discouraged, though studentsmay wear a watch. They may also wear achain around their neck as long as the chainis safety pinned to the inside of the shirtto avoid danger or damage to the studentand/or school equipment.

Students may have no more than twopierced holes per earlobe, with either sim-ple stud earrings or sleeper earrings. Allother jewellery is considered a danger tothe students’ safety and should not beworn. Medical bracelets are exempt.

With regards to hair, hairstyles shouldbe neat, clean, tidy and of natural tone.Hair sculpting and patterning falls outsidethe acceptable appearance dress code.

Long hair (shoulder length or longer) maybe required to be tied back in the interests

of Workplace Health and Safety, for cer-tain activities.

All hair ornamentations should be keptto a minimum to include scrunchies, rib-bons, and hair bands.

Visible tattoos and visible body piercingare not permitted.

If any student refuses to adhere to theUniform Policy as outlined at the time ofenrolment, they may be dealt with underthe school’s Responsible Behaviour Planfor Students.

If a family has difficulty meeting uniformrequirements as stated in the UniformPolicy, they are encouraged to contact thePrincipal to discus the matter.

The Cooroy Rag has tried to contact theprincipal of NDSHS, Mr Barry Dittman, toclarify the Responsible Behaviour Plan, toattempt to find out how many P&C mem-bers and/or students were involved in theconsultation process; to ascertain if thesame health and safety standards appliedto teachers, and to address rumours of stu-dent suspension, but as yet have not re-ceived a response.

I THINK they’ve gone way too far withit. We’re here to learn and teachersshould put more effort into teaching usinstead of focussing on what we wearand trying to humiliate us in front of ourpeers.

I’d agree with closed in shoes for healthand safety reasons, but why do theyhave to be a certain colour? And why isa necklace classed as a safety hazardwhich could get caught in things whena tie, which is part of the uniform, is‘safe’?

EXCELLENCE through Diversity is theschool’s motto. What a joke. We either con-form or suffer consequences. Hyprocrital.

WHY are they causing a big stir at the be-ginning of the year when we’re all enthusi-astic about going back to school. It hasimmediately caused a feeling of negativitybetween students and teachers.

MY shoes are closed in. My mother choseand bought them for me. They have a fewair holes in the front. They’re sold in shopsas school shoes, yet they aren’t goodenough for our school. Mum is now angrywith me because she now has to buy an-other pair, the teachers are angry with meand giving me consequences, and I’m an-gry because it’s not my fault. I didn’tchoose them and I have no money to buymyself new ones. A lot of anger for some-thing so ridiculous. Strange, as they wereokay to wear last year.

I DON’T do any science subjects ormanual arts, but my necklace and brace-let are apparently too dangerous to wearin the classroom. Is this ‘danger’ onlyout to get the students because it doesn’tseem that the teachers who wear strappyshoes and jewellery are too worriedabout it.

APPARENTLY my make up is a distraction.I hope when I leave school and get a job Iwon’t be so distracted by people’s make-up that I can’t work. I’m pretty sure if Ifronted up at a job interview for many po-sitions wearing no make-up I wouldn’t begiven a chance. Come on people, we’re notthat easily distracted. Stop treating us likeidiots.

I DIDN’T think it was compulsory for usto wear uniforms. How does what we wearaffect our education. Free thinking andindividuality should be lorded, not pun-ished.

I’VE been colouring my hair forever. Inthis day and age that’s totally accept-able. What is natural hair colour anywayand does anybody have it once they’reover 12?

The following is a selection ofresponses from students weinterviewed at random about theNDSHS uniform policy. We are nottrying to exagerate the negative, butout of the many studentsquestioned there was only onepositive response. All studentswished to remain anonymous.

WHY is it safe to wear studs in our earsbut not in our nose? And if we can weara watch why not a bracelet? It justdoesn’t make sense.

I DON’T wear jewellery or make-up andI’ve never been bullied for it. It doesn’tmake any difference to me.

I DON’T believe the uniform rules are tomake us safe. I think they’re just tryingto get us to all look the same, think thesame and act the same so their jobs areeasier.

I THINK it’s a good idea. We should stopworrying about how we look andconcentrate on our education.

A GROUP of Cooroy businesses havecome together with a unique and crea-tive way of encouraging people to sup-port local businesses.

Thirty-five retailers have all contrib-uted to a prize pool of $1,500 in localshopping vouchers that will be the re-ward for 3 lucky people for shopping inCooroy.

To be in the running to win one of the‘shopping sprees’ up for grabs, peoplesimply need to shop at any 12 of the 35retailers involved, attach their docketsto an entry form available at the partici-pating stores and pop it into the entrybox at Cooroy Saddlery Warehouse be-fore 11am on March 5th 2011.

The three winners will be drawn at12:00 midday on Saturday the 5th ofMarch as the climax of the Saddlery’sSecond Birthday 2 day sale where allstock will be reduced by 20% through-out the two days.

David Wright from Cooroy Saddlery saidthat the idea came to him as he was planning

the annual birthday sale for the Saddleryand it grew into something much bigger thanhe first imagined. Local businesses em-braced the concept and he was overwhelmedwith the support. With the Global FinancialCrisis having a negative impact on retailsales everywhere and with interest rates onthe rise many retailers have been finding ittough. Both Cooroy shoppers and retailersalike stood to benefit from this promotion. The substantial combined prize pool willmake three Cooroy shoppers very happyindeed as they ‘Shop Till they Drop’. Inter-est in the promotion should also stimulatethe local economy which in turn benefitseveryone in the community!

As a first time trial of the concept Davidsaid that if it was a success it is likely to besomething the local businesses would re-peat in the future with perhaps even moreretailers getting involved with an even big-ger prize pool.

THERE is change afoot at Cooroy Commu-nity Kindergarten, however the onlychange you are likely to notice is thesignage around the property.

With the introduction of the new Queens-land Government Kindergarten FundingScheme Initiative, Kindergartens acrossQueensland now have more choiceavailable when selecting who their CentralGoverning Body will be.

There are now 5 registered CentralGoverning Bodies in Queensland and overthe period 2010 to 2012 approximately 240new Kindergartens are due to open aroundthe state.

At the completion of the 2010 year thecommittee and staff made a very difficultdecision in ceasing our affiliation withC&K Qld. The decision was not madelightly but we felt due to the direction andgrowth within C&K Qld, as an affiliatedcentre, it was in our best interest to affiliatewith The Gowrie (Qld) Incorporated asthey feel like the right fit for our Kindergar-ten at this time.

The Cooroy Community Kindergarten hasalways had strong support and presence inour Community and Gowrie is a morecommunity minded body who supports ourindividuality and community spirit, whilst

Cooroy Community Kindergartennow affiliated with Lady Gowrie

still adhering to the same QueenslandGovernment Early Learning Frameworkprogram.

Over 30 Kindergartens (predominatelyon the Sunshine Coast) have also madethe move to affiliate with Lady GowrieCommunity Kindergartens.

This within itself will help strengthen thelevel of support we receive on theSunshine Coast. The commitment Gowriehave made to support us in the trainingand delivery of our program to staff andto the management of our business isvery reassuring. Gowrie has providededucation and care for children andfamilies for over 70 years throughoutAustralia. The delivery of our trainingprogram will not be affected and you canrest assured your child’s educationalfuture is in safe hands as we will still beproviding the same high standard ofeducation and care by our qualified, hardworking and dedicated staff members.

If you have any concerns please feelfree to speak with our current PresidentSoraya McLean on 5447 7076, DirectorDiana Markovits on 5447 6037 or the CEOof Gowrie Queensland, Jane Bournewould be happy to speak with you andcan be contacted on 0433 392 310.

Business Risk ProtectionTHOSE who own a business think about ways ofimproving and strengthening their businessevery day. You probably don’t think about howit might cope without you, or indeed how youmight cope without it.But just like every other sort of insurance, busi-ness risk protection is something you need tothink about and plan for in case of future need.Perhaps because they hope never to need it, fewbusinesses understand how to assess the valueof business risk protection. Try considering the3Ds – determine value, decide strategy, docu-ment agreement.

• Determine the value of your business- How much is the business worth?- Is the value based on an agreed formula, dol-

lar value or an independent assessment?• Decide who should be left with what after the

departure of a business party- Who takes ownership of the business?- What are the family’s needs and expectations?- What are the business’s needs and expecta-

tions?- What is the family’s ongoing role in the man-

agement of the business?- What is involved in the day-to-day manage-

ment of the business?• Document the agreement- A solicitor can help business owners set up a

Buy/Sell Agreement to document how an outgo-ing proprietor’s business interest will be trans-ferred to the continuing proprietor(s) upon a trig-ger event.

Insurance is one of many solutions, so speakto a specialist to help you determine whether it’sthe most appropriate and cost-effective optionfor your business protection needs.

When is a good time to shop for business riskinsurance?

If you are sitting on the fence or think you’ll getaround to it some day, take a minute and ask your-

self the following ques-tions?

• What would happento your business if youwere sick or injured?

• Will your currentinsurances, includingthose within superfunds, be enough topay-off your debts (eg.loan repayments) andkeep your family com-fortable for the rest oftheir lives?

• Will you be able tomeet your lifestyle ex-penses (eg. rent, food, education) without a regular income?

• Will you be able to pay your ongoing busi-ness expenses (eg. loan or rent repayments, leas-ing costs, utility bills) if you were unable to workfor 12 months?

• Do you have a contingency plans for the busi-ness?

• What are the alternatives to not having a planin place?

• What is the cost to your business if you talkedto a specialist about putting in place the requiredstrategy and funding to protect you, your familyand the business?

If you would like to discuss this type of insur-ance, please do not hesitate to contact me and Ican arrange an obligation free consultation withone of Bendigo Bank’s specialists. At theBendigo we believe you should have every op-portunity to make an informed decision about notonly your finance needs but also the optionsavailable to protect you and your business. FOLLOWING the recent deluge of rains Queensland has experienced, a vastamount of debris, and along with it tonnes of waste material will have flowedinto our countless creeks, rivers, bays and beaches.

This year Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday March 6th, and following theclean up of properties after the floods, our creeks, rivers.

bushland and road side culverts will be still be inundated with bottles, cans, wrappers and all matter of rubbish that have been the swept along by theraging waters. This means that this year’s Clean Up Australia Day is critical tothe well being of our environment.

The spirit shown in helping out those affected by the floods, and the willing-ness of volunteers to lend a hand will need to continue for at least a few hourson that Sunday to ensure that as much of the remaining waste can be collected,so our environment can begin the process of recovery as well.

It is the beauty of our waterways and bushland that draws us to live where welive, so please give a few hours of your time on Clean Up Australia Day to help.

SUGAR was born in Eumundi on Bastille Day 1946,the second child for Lorna and Clive Robinson.

His early years were spent on Anderson’s farmbefore attending school at Eerwah Vale. In 1952Sugar moved to Elm Street, Cooroy becoming a‘wild Garnet Street boy’.

Most people thought he was nicknamed Sugarafter the great boxer Sugar Ray, but the real storywas that as a kid, Lorna sent him to buy flour fromRows and he came back with sugar instead.

As a young lad Sugar got up to many wild stunts. He worked and played hard with his motto being‘You only live once’. His jobs were many and var-ied, but for the past 20 years, Sugar worked for theold Noosa Shire Council and was involved in thelocal Rugby League Club.

His mates and family will remember him as a love-able character, a bit cheeky, someone who loved agood risqué joke and a laugh and someone whowould do anything for you. He will be sadly missed.

Raymond Clive Robinson ‘Sugar’ (14-7-46 to 9-12-10)

THE family of Harold would sincerely like to thank Relatives, Friends &Neighbours for their kind expressions, cards, flowers and prayers re-ceived during their recent sad loss.

Grateful thanks to the attending Paramedics, Police Officers and Doc-tors, especially Anne and Staff of Drysdale’s for their caring and profes-sional assistance, also to all who gave their support by attending thefuneral.

AS I write this article, things have been fairly quietfor about a week. Two teams were deployed to helpout in the clean up of Brisbane, one team for fivedays; and the other went up and back on a Satur-day.While they were away, we had another load of sanddelivered in Cooroy, so another working bee wasorganised to fill sandbags. With so many peopleout of town, we asked the Black Mountain RuralFire Brigade if they could help out, and to my relief, quite a number turned up to assist. Five pallets offilled sandbags later, all the sand was bagged. Thankyou Black Mountain RFS.

On Australia Day we were up at dawn to go toNoosaville Lions Park where we helped out withparking in two areas. It was a beautiful day thank-fully, and everyone was so happy to see the sunshining after so much rain. However, for those ofus in our Personal Protective Equipment (orangeoveralls and suits), it was devilishly hot and un-comfortable. Unfortunately there was the usual smallpercentage of people who seemed quite put out thatthey were unable to park right in front of the stage, where we had carparks reserved. These were keptfor those integral to the ceremony, but mainly, forour disabled residents.

Two cyclones are threatening the Queenslandcoast at the moment, and we are all hoping theydon’t amount to too much for us, or for others in theState. We’ve had enough of wind and rain thankyou. However, we need to always be prepared, par-ticularly at this time of the year. In case you’re won-dering about cyclone categories: Category 1 hasmaximum gusts of up to 125 kph and will cause neg-ligible house damage, but damage to some crops, trees and caravans. Craft may drag moorings. Cat-egory 2 has wind gusts of 125-170 kph and can causeminor house damage with significant damage tosigns, trees and caravans, and heavy damage tosome crops. There is risk of power failure and smallcraft may break moorings. Category 3 and upwards

Category4 has very destructive winds at 225-280 kph andcan cause significant roofing loss and structuraldamage. Many caravans can be destroyed andblown away. There could be dangerous airbornedebris and widespread power failures. Category 5,the highest rating, has very destructive winds ofmore than 280 kph which are extremely dangerousand can cause widespread destruction. The Cricket UmpireYou can have all your batsmen, your fieldsmen, your bowlers,Your pitches, your boundaries, your sight screens, your rollers,There is one element in cricket most important of all,The Umpire – without him you cannot bowl a ball.

There I stand in my solitary state,I am the master of every player’s fate,I decide whether he is in or he is out,I know all the laws, and what the game’s all about.

I stand at the wicket for the whole of the match,Watching intently for the no ball or the catch,Judging leg before, and listening for snicks,Ignoring suggestions of seeing eye dogs and white sticks.

When a batsman’s given out, and won’t leave the wicket,Loudly declaring “Umpy, I didn’t snick it,”I just raise my fickle forefinger of fate,Saying “Look at the scoreboard son, on your way outthrough the gate”.

When the keeper screams “Howzat” and leaps to the sky,I decide it’s not out and then tell him why,“It was pretty close, son, I have to admit it,But I can’t give him out, because he didn’t hit it!”

I decide when it’s too wet for play,And whether the light is clear and okay,I keep an eye for tampering with the ball,On overdone sledging, and dissent with my call.

The commentators in the stand, usually players of old,Who critically analyse every ball that is bowled,Some think that umpiring’s easy, just a piece of cake,And give me a blast if I make a rare mistake.

Those commentators too, in their box up on high,Have their TV, their snickometer, their replay, their hawkeye,With that help, their decisions sound experienced and wise,But I only need seconds, and a good pair of eyes!

But I do love my job, and I do love the game,Even though these days, it’s not quite the same,I can ignore all the criticism, and not get distressed,I will be honest, and fair, and always give of my best.

I am the umpire.Jim Dunstan

WHAT a great day was had by everyone atthe Cooroy Hotel on Australia Day.

The crab racing was a feisty affair andeveryone got down and dirty for the toadracing.

A big crowd of kids and adults had heaps offun watching the races and a lot of money wasraised for the flood relief.

The aussie barbecue was a hit and everyoneinvolved with the racing did not walk awayempty handed.

There were heaps of prizes, drink promo-tions, and lollies to keep the kids busy. This isbecoming a must on the calendar each year forthe locals and also visitors to our lovely town. Not to forget the beautiful and very patrioticsinging by everyone of the National Anthembefore the start of the crab racing.

LOCAL optometrists Jenny Currie and HeatherMcLeod from optometry@cooroy have noticed asharp increase recently in the number of their pa-tients complaining of itchy and watery eyes.

Heather says that “40% of the Australian popula-tion suffers from allergies and many of those arealso prone to developing eye allergies. We havehowever been seeing more than our usual share ofpatients suffering allergic conjunctivitis. Symptomsto watch for include: itchiness, redness and wateryeyes.”

“We are sure that the most likely cause for thisincrease in allergy sufferers will be the mould thatwe have all noticed in our houses this wet season”adds Jenny. “Your eyes are an easy target for aller-gic reactions. When you open your eyes they aredirectly exposed to the environment as there is nofiltering system in place, like the hairs that are com-monly found in the nose”.

Heather says that “To manage allergic conjuncti-vitis, it is important to determine the source of theallergen to enable you to avoid it, and to thereforereduce the frequency and severity of the symptoms.Keeping your house free of mould and as dry aspossible can help prevent problems and antihista-mine eye drops may assist in relieving the acutesymptoms.”

So, if you experience a new or unusual allergicreaction, it’s important to have your eyes checkedas soon as any signs of an allergy present them-selves.

optometry@cooroy is at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy.For more information phone 5442 5555.

Eye allergies on increase

THE world is becoming an increasingly stressfulplace to live. Many of us are facing meltdown. Thecost of living, the growing pressure of other finan-cial commitments, increasingly complex levels of tech-nology, decreasing employment opportunity and thesimple frustration of not being able to speak to ahuman being on the phone to sort out our problemsis driving many of us to the edge.

Depression, habit disorders and unemployment iscreating internalized and externalised anger whichis tearing many families apart.

But… there is light at the end of the tunnel!Back in the sixties two gentleman by the name of

Richard Bandler and John Grinder co-developed acollection of concepts and techniques intended tounderstand and change human behavior-patternscalled Neuro-Linguistic Programming. NLP exploresthe relationship between what you think and feel…(that’s the neuro part), how you communicate orverbalise the things you think and feel (that’s thelinguistic part) and the patterns of behaviour andemotions created by what you think, feel and con-sequently verbalise. These patterns are called yourprograms. By adjusting some programs and substi-tuting new ones you begin to take control of yourfuture.

WATER suppresses the appetite natu-rally and helps the body metabolisestored fat.

Here is why. The kidneys cannotfunction properly without enough purewater. When they don’t work to ca-pacity filtering our blood some of theirload is dumped onto the liver. One ofthe liver’s primary functions is to me-tabolise stored fat into usable energyfor the body to use. But if the liverhas to do some of the kidney’s work itcannot operate at its optimal level. Asa result it metabolises less fat andhence more fat remains in the body tobecome weight gain.

Drinking enough water is the besttreatment for proper body functionsto occur. When the body doesn’t getenough water it perceives this as athreat to survival and begins to holdonto every drop. Water is stored inextracellular spaces (outside the cells). This shows up as swollen feet, legsand hands.

Diuretics offer a temporary solutionat best. They force out stored waterand some essential nutrients. Again, the body perceives a threat and willreplace the water at the first availableopportunity, thus the condition quicklyreturns. The best way to solve theproblem is to give the body what itneeds – more pure water daily. Onlythen can the stored water be released.

If you have a constant problem withwater retention you may be consum-ing too much poor quality salt. Thebody requires a certain amount of so-dium and if we consume too much thenthe body will retain water to dilute it.Remember to consult your health carepractitioner if this is ongoing as healthof kidneys may be affected.

The overweight person needs morewater than the thin person. Larger peo-ple have larger metabolic loads, hencethey need more water for their body tofunction efficiently.

Kidneys filter our blood and deter-

mine the amount of water that is in itfor best functioning. If the body’sblood is holding less water than is re-quired it places strain on the heart andvascular system and can lead to highblood pressure. For every kilo over-weight a person is means 300kilometers of extra blood capillaries tobe pumped – definitely more strain.

Water helps to maintain proper mus-cle tone by giving muscles their natu-ral ability to contract. Water also helpsto prevent the sagging skin that usu-ally follows weight loss – shrinkingcells are buoyed by water whichplumps the skin and leaves it clear, healthy and resilient.

Water can help relieve constipation. When the body gets too little water itsiphons what it needs from other in-ternal sources and the large bowel ( orcolon ) is one primary source, thus lead-ing to constipation. More daily water, better daily poos, better health andweight loss.

How much water is enough? On av-erage about 2 litres daily or more de-pending on body constitution, age, strenuous work and exercise. In thesub-tropics this can double so knowyour own body and cater for the ac-tivity at hand.

Water ideally needs to be drunk atroom temperature for best absorption– not cold, not hot. If a person isheavier than they need to be, an extraglass of water is required for every 10.5kilos of extra weight carried. Remem-ber ‘water is water’ and the body rec-ognises it as that and uses it accord-ingly. Tea, coffee, soft drinks etc arerecognised as foods, not water and areabsorbed entirely differently.

Our body’s are about 70% water andso is Mother Earth – it is essential forlife and vital health – drink up.

HAVING a good night’s sleep is essential tohealth and wellness. One of the most com-mon complaints we see in a physio clinic ispeople who wake feeling stiff and sore orfail to get a good night’s sleep due to pain. There are a number of factors which con-tribute to a good nights sleep – the mat-tress, the pillow and the sleeping position.

Mattresses and pillows are available in somany different types that it is difficult tochoose which one to purchase. Ultimately, personal preference and comfort shoulddetermine the type of mattress, however amattress that is too soft, does not provideadequate spinal support. Some studies sug-gest a medium-firm mattress is ideal for backpain sufferers as it provides support to thespine but is soft enough to allow the shoul-ders and hips to sink in a little. Check whatthe mattress is made of eg. Coils, springs,as this is what provides the support. Themore coils/springs, the more support. Mostmattresses come with a padded layer overthe top which provides more comfort than

This Valentine’s Day - get comfy between the sheets!those without. If your mattress is startingto sag, or no longer provides adequate sup-port, it is time to get a new one.

Many types of pillows are available but ifyou are a side-sleeper, it is important to havea posture-type pillow which has a hollowfor the head and a supportive roll for theneck. This stops the neck from “kinking”down towards the mattress. Try not to use2 pillows, especially large pillows as theseforce the head into a flexed position andplace extra strain on the neck and upper back.We try where possible to let people take apillow home for a night and place a pillow-case over the plastic to allow a trial beforepurchase. This ensures that money is notwasted on an uncomfortable pillow.

When it comes to sleeping positions, themost common are back sleepers, side sleep-ers and tummy sleepers (and of course thoseValentine’s day romantic spooners!) To sup-port your spine when sleeping on your back, place a pillow under your knees. This takessome strain off the lower back, allowing for

a more comfortable sleep. People whosleep on their side should bend theirhips slightly and place a pillow betweenthe legs. This allows the spine to main-tain a more neutral alignment and re-duces the strain on hips and pelvises.Stomach sleeping is quite hard on theneck especially and should only be usedif no other positions are comfortable. Ifyou need to sleep on your stomach, place a pillow under your hips and onlyuse a pillow for your head if needed. Ifyou are suffering with back/neck painor would like advice on a pillow, pleasecontact Rebecca or Craig at HinteractivePhysio on 5442 5556.

After working two years in HongKong teaching for Dramatic English,Johanna moved to Nias Island Indo-nesia to do what she could with herskills to helps kids affected by the tsu-nami. THE vast majority of people consider backpain as something to treat when it happens, usually through prescription and over thecounter drugs. However, while drugs mayrelieve pain temporarily, they are a quick fixsolution which ignore the “bigger picture”,including underlying structural problemsand lifestyle habits.

Back pain can be a sign of somethinggreater, and should not be viewed as an in-evitable part of life that should be “put up”with. Back pain can be an indicator of howan individual’s poor lifestyle choices are af-fecting their health.

While back pain can affect us in all stagesof life, thankfully there is plenty that can bedone to get to the cause of the problem, learn ways to prevent it, and maintain thehealth of the spine and the body as a wholeon an ongoing basis.

Unfortunately, most of us do not think tocare for our spines until there is a problem, such as a “thrown out” back or a “cricked”neck. However, just like our teeth, the spinerequires regular attention. The concept ofspinal hygiene exists just like dental hy-giene.

The spine can be thought of as the canalto everything in our bodies – the movingbones of the spine protect the vulnerablecommunication, pathways of the spinal cordand nerve roots, if the nervous system isimpaired through dysfunction in the spine,it can cause malfunction of the systems andorgans throughout the body.

PEOPLE with asthma and allergies are be-ing warned that recent wet weather may trig-ger unseasonable hay fever like symptoms.

Pollen and mould are both common trig-gers of allergy that can lead to hay feversymptoms including itchy eyes, watery eyes, sneezing and breathing problems.

For these people, relief often comes in theform of a nasal inhaler spray to alleviate al-lergy symptoms – but, the National AsthmaCouncil Australia believes many people arenot receiving maximum relief from their in-haler due to poor user technique.

To help combat the problem, the Councilhas produced a series of short ‘how to’;nasal inhaler videos, which demonstrate thecorrect technique for the three most com-mon spray inhalers on the market: Nasonex,

Wet weather prolongs allergy seasonRhinocort and Avamys.

Many sufferers are not receiving the fullbenefits of the medicines with many peoplereceiving incorrect dosages or even nose-bleeds as the result of poor usage.

Because many of the treatments for thesesymptoms are nasal sprays, and sold overthe counter, it’s important for people to asktheir pharmacist to demonstrate their use ifthey have not been shown previously.

Watching the videos online is also a firstgood step towards correct dosage and useof nasal sprays.

The National Asthma Council Australiaadvises anyone suffering from prolongedallergy symptoms this year or uncontrolledasthma to seek professional help and ad-vice from their GP or pharmacist.

HOSPITALISATIONS and severe injuries result-ing from falls account for a great portion of social, personal and economic costs in our community. In2007, falls were the most common cause of fatalinjuries in Queensland. Persons of older age (65+)are at greater risk of having and sustaining an in-jury from a fall, accounting for 95% of all falls.

So are falls preventable within our ageing popu-lation? The short answer is yes. However there isnot one simple solution for everyone. Numerousrisk factors interact to contribute to a person’s riskof falling – including: Physical – balance, gait, strength, conditioning, vision, sleep; Pharmaco-logical – medication interactions; Psychological –fear of falling, depression / anxiety; Environmental– footwear, home and community hazards, equip-ment.

The more risk factors a person has, the greatertheir likelihood of falling. Given the fact that fallsare multi-factorial, falls prevention programs mustbe multidisciplinary in their approach.

Eden Rehabilitation Centre offers a Recondi-tioning Program for people who suffer from falls orwho are at risk of falling and involves input from:Physiotherapist – balance, mobility, walking aids;occupational Therapist – self care, household tasks, community access, equipment, home modifications;Exercise Physiologist – strength, balance, condi-tioning; Nursing – continence; Pharmacist – medi-cation management; Optometrist - visual impair-ment, safety, management strategies; Dietitian –hydration and nutrition.

Education sessions are also held on relevant top-ics such as footwear, sleep and overcoming fear offalling.

The six week program comprises two four-hoursessions each week and is overseen by Eden’s Spe-cialist in Rehabilitation Medicine. Patients whomay benefit include those with diagnoses that im-pact on balance, mobility, exercise endurance and /or safe access to home or community.

IN my next life I want to live back-wards. You start out dead and getthat out of the way. Then you wakeup in an old people’s home feelingbetter every day. You get kicked outfor being too healthy, go collectyour pension, and then when youstart work, you get a gold watch anda party on your first day.

You work for 40 years until you’reyoung enough to enjoy your retire-ment. You party, drink alcohol, andare generally promiscuous, thenyou are ready for high school. Youthen go to primary school, you be-come a kid, you play. You have noresponsibilities, you become a babyuntil you are born. And then youspend your last 9 months floatingin luxurious spa like conditions withcentral heating and room service ontap, larger quarters every day andthen, Voila! You finish off as an or-gasm! I rest my case.

DISABILITY supporter workers atDoonan’s House With No Steps re-cently unveiled eco-friendly carrybags they have made for the OriginalEumundi Markets.

Market Manager Peter Homan saysEumundi Markets are proud to haveteamed up with House With No Stepsto make a difference by acting locally.

“As one of the biggest tourist at-tractions on the Coast and the biggestcraft market in Australia, we’re com-mitted to reducing our impact on theenvironment and to creating a sustain-able shopping experience.

“Our market became plastic bag freelast year and our stallholders made thetransition to using only compostablepackaging materials,” he says.

“The creation of locally made carrybags is the next step for us in ensur-ing the elimination of plastic bags,”

Peter said. “The first run of 500 bagshave been made using a biodegrad-able polyester and will sell for $10each,” Peter said.

As part of Eumundi Markets’ com-mitment to things clean and green, theyhave also set up an extensive wastemanagement system throughout themarkets with recycling, and compostbins as well as landfill bins – andsignage to really encourage our visi-tors to think before they bin it.

The markets are particularly proudof a worm farm (vermiculture system)run in conjunction with Eumundi StateSchool. All compostable waste gener-ated by the market is processed by theworm farm (8 commercial size bins andmany thousands of worms). The by-products (organic fertiliser and cast-ings) are then sold by the school andat the markets.

THE Cooroy Community Bank branch ofBendigo Bank is delighted to announce thearrival of a talented new member to its team.

Lucie Loginow couldn’t be more familiar

Cooroy Community Bank branch lands talented Luciewith Cooroy and her workplace as itwas only last year that Lucie finishedYear 12 at Noosa District State HighSchool where she served as schoolcaptain.

She’s also pretty familiar with theCommunity Banking concept asLucie also served as a volunteer Jun-ior Observer Director with theBendigo Bank board in 2010.

Lucie’s long list of achievementsread like something you’d expectfrom someone twice her age and in-clude community service, publicspeaking and senior leadershipawards as well as youth ambassado-

rial roles with Rotary Australian Student andYouth Exchange Programs.

The enthusiastic local says she’s excitedabout her new start as a Customer Service

Officer at Cooroy branch.“I’m really lucky to have a good head

start, already knowing so many localsand being aware the Bendigo differenceand the important part the CommunityBank branch plays in Cooroy’s future,”Lucie said.

“I look forward to expanding my in-volvement in the Cooroy communityand working with the other BendigoBank branches on the coast.

“We’re up to 12 now and we’re grow-ing from strength. There’s a great teamin Cooroy and I hope to work closelywith our manager Fiona Hutchings andthe girls,” she added.

ON Thursday 27th January the enthusiasticcommittee met to continue to refine its struc-ture and set an Opening Date for the gar-dens which will be at 2pm on Sunday 17thApril 2011 at the rear of the new library. More details will be released about this funand informative occasion in the followingweeks.

There is a dedicated Design Team workingon creative ideas for the site so that it iseducational, aesthetic, practical and fullyaccessable in every way by ourCommunity. Council also has requirementsthat must be met for the long term use ofcommon land.

The word Gardens was used as a networkof beautiful gardens is envisioned aroundCooroy where individual plots, demonstra-

Cooroy Community Gardens projecttion plots and creative growing activities canbe conducted for the benefit of the wholecommunity. This will also help to ensure ourfood security for the future.

To announce this first stage we need a bigsign for the Library/Butter Factory site toinform visitors and friends where to go tolook at the gardens. It is planned the signwould be about 3meters x 500mm, made ofcarved timber and read ‘Cooroy CommunityGardens’ with the possums tail being in-corporated into the C in Cooroy. Can any-one help?

Thank you to the Butter Factory Staff andthe Library Staff for their efforts in coordi-nating this community adventure.

All inquiries may be made through CeliaDonnellan at the Cooroy Library.

Jess ‘Da Bomb’ on Olympic campaign

FELLOW Impact Boxer, “Slamin Sam” CameronHands will also be competing on the same card.Unfortunately for the 11yr old, there will be noOlympic selection at this stage but a Queenslandtitle will be up for grabs for the young gun.“Slamin Sam” has also had a great preparation forthis fight. He has been sparing all the adults in thegym (and just quietly has hurt a few of them). When “Slamin Sam hits you, you have been hit.“At just 34kgs he is a force to be reckoned with,”trainer Mark Evans said.

which means she may have to have a few fightsover the three days.

“We are confident that she will do well. She hasbeen training hard and has had plenty of good qual-ity sparing with some of the coast top Professionaland amateur fighters. This has been Jess’s bestpreparation for a fight, with her partner and profes-sional boxer Andrew Gosden and myself pushingher through her pad work, skill work, fitness, strengthand stamina work, we are quietly confident that shehas done everything needed to get through,” trainerMark Evans said.
