Academic Literacy Support Workshops
Coordinated by Tamra Cocks
What are the workshops?The workshops are designed to:
Build upon your literacy skills and support you in your studies at the College.
Help build your confidence in literacy focused assignments
Show you how to develop your academic English skills and apply them in your study courses
What will be taught in the workshops? Reading- Skimming & scanning skills- Summarizing & Note taking- Identifying argument and critically analysing strengths and weaknesses of evidence- Editing and proofreading to eliminate errors in grammar, spelling and mechanics
Vocabulary- Inferring meaning from context- Building on vocabulary bank
Writing/ Grammar and Syntax- Paraphrasing- In-Text Referencing (Harvard Referencing Guide)- Sentence structure & word order- Paragraph & Essay organisation- Capitalization and Punctuation- Verb tenses (present, past, future, perfect)- Style and expression (using modals, choosing words and varying sentence structure to
suit audience and purpose)
When and where?The workshops will be run from week 2 – week 13 of
Study Period 5Held on Monday from 2-4pm and Thursday and Friday
from 10am-12pmHeld in the Barbara Hanrahan building (BH 4-30) on
Monday and the Rowland Rees building (RR 3-11) on Thursday & Friday

I will also be available for consultation and in DP2 Student Common Room on Tuesday 11am-12pm and Friday 1-2pm
What is the schedule? How will I get access to it?A schedule will be created every 3 weeksAll students will be advised via email.The schedule will also be put up in the
student common room DP level 2.
