Czech engineering plays key role in export

Czech engineering has witnessed the very beginning of industrial manufacturing. Since the 19th century, it has been well-known around the world and skills of Czech engineers have always been considered excellent. Even today, Czech manufacturing is, to certain extent, profiting from this positive tradition and Czech engineering companies are o�en sought a�er by foreign businesses. Among other things, this trend can be proved by high number of subjects interested in investing into various Czech engineering businesses a�er November 1989. Despite the initial wariness regarding the “sale of family silver”, this type of cooperation has proved to be successful for majority of businesses.

Currently, the main problem of Czech engineering export is the competitiveness of production. This is, obviously, connected to increasing the portion of articles with higher added value, fast implementation of outcomes of applied research and innovations into manufacturing, ability to react with flexibly to individual requirements of clients and providing an immaculate service. And finally, a pressing question regarding the lack of qualified manpower closely related to the o�en-discussed reform of technical high-schools and vocational education is still standing.

Based on the analysis of current economic situation, a moderate growth of approximately 2,7 percent is expected in engineering sector in 2016.

In relation to this, more than 70% of Czech engineering businesses are expecting an increase of exporting activities, especially due to addition of new export territories. In present business climate, the diversification of export destinations is a necessity and is one of the causes behind the growth of the total volume of Czech export and significantly influences the overall productivity of open Czech economy.

Based on production machinery export that enabled development of almost all other branches of engineering industry, the basic composition of territorial diversity of the engineering products export remained almost unchanged in recent years. The largest portion of engineering export is traditionally heading to Germany, followed by Russia, China, Slovakia and Poland. The export to the Russian and Chinese markets is strongly influenced by fluctuations of geopolitics and economic situation in these regions. The export to the Russian Federation has been influenced by secondary effects of economic sanctions, such as decrease of value of rouble and insolvency of some Russian business partners. Although the growth of Chinese industry has slowed down, China still remains an attractive export destination, as well as other Asian destinations. It is expected that business interests of our exporters will be increasingly directed to the Middle East territories in future. This, however, depends on political situation in the region. The relationships with US business partners are also being re-developed and Latin America remains in the centre of exporters’ interest despite certain difficulties with customs procedures.

The Made in CZ Industry publication aims to become the high-quality up-to-date source of information about the present image of Czech engineering platform. Its ambition is to become an essential tool for our “economic ambassadors” who act as mediators of exporting opportunities not only at various Czech embassies but also in offices of the government agency CzechTrade in foreign countries. Engineering exports

The Czech Republic is one of the most industrial countries in Europe. The leading sector in Czech industry is mechanical engineering, which has been one of the pillars of the Czech economy with a history of over 150 years. The result is a combination of positive factors for further development and investment, with a sufficient highly-qualified labour force, adequate infrastructure and technical facilities that allow for a focus on research, development and application of new technologies.

Although traditional, this sector has seen significant changes in recent decades. Apart from modernization and a greater emphasis on new technologies, this particularly involves a change in the structure of production in reaction to foreign demand. In terms of export, which is crucial to our engineering industry, the record-breaking trade surplus in 2015 was excellent news.

Year-over-year exports increased by 7.2% to CZK 3,888.8 billion in 2015. Exports of Czech machines, which are one of the most important items of Czech exports, are increasing every year. This trend is expected to continue in 2016.

In terms of the commodity structure, the export of machinery and means of transport contributed significantly to this excellent result, with a share of over 50% in exports. The Czech Republic thus confirms its leading position in this sector.

Czech brands such as TOS, MAS, ŠKODA, ŠMERAL, ZPS, ŽĎAS are known around the world. Czech engineering products are exported mainly to European countries (Germany, Slovakia, Poland), but Czech manufacturers are also well established in Russia and China.

ACRI is an organization associating companies engaged in the Czech railway supply industry. The association is a member of UNIFE – Union of European Railway Industries.ACRI represents joint interests of the railway supply industry towards Czech and EU institutions, rail operators, rail infrastructure managers and many other business relations and via UNIFE also towards the EU institutions. ACRI associated companies currently employ more than 20,000 employees in the Czech Republic and generate an annual turnover almost CZK 83 billion. The share of export on the total turnover is 54 %. The Agricultural and Forestry Machinery Association A.ZeT was established in 1990 by Czech manufacturing, commercial, research and service enterprises. The purpose of the Association was to form a base for common resolution of problems in the areas of development, production and sales of farm machines, domestically as well as abroad. The Association at the present time has 41 accredited members.The ongoing activity of the Secretariat of the Association of Agricultural and Forestry Machinery Manufacturers is to provide information service to member businesses. For this purpose an information database is being created about members of the Association as well as further producers and sellers of agricultural and forestry machinery in the Czech Republic as well as abroad.

Among the main activities of the Association belong: organizing enterprising contacts, finding and opening co-operation programs between Czech enterprises on one side and foreign firms on the other side for the purpose of production or business cooperations

The Association of Engineering Technology is an interest associa-tion established in 1990. Nowadays, it associates 48 most prominent companies in the branch of metal cutting and metal forming machines operating in the Czech and Slovak Republics. Considering a long tradition of engineering in Bohemia, which dates back over one hundred and fi�y years, we can take pride in a number of brands highly acknowledged all over the world. The most famous ones are TOS, MAS, Šmeral, Škoda, ŽĎAS and others.

At the present time, member companies are expecting from their professional association mainly promotion of their specific interests in relation to the government, state authorities and general public. Obviously, it has to make various PR steps to foster and maintain its own social prestige and visibility. Apart from the top level lobbying, the association also arranges for mani-fold forms of cooperation of the state and entrepreneurs within the Czech Republic as well as between individual associations which are members of the European Association of the Machine Tool Industries CECIMO. At this level, the identification of developmental trends and intensification of the information exchange take place.

In the area of marketing, SST provides an organizational backup to its member companies in domestic or foreign trade fairs and ensures financial support from the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The Association is also involved in the organization of a number of accompanying events to the most prestigious engineering trade fair held in the Czech Republic every year, i.e. International Engineering Fair in Brno.

Effective support both for the member companies and the whole industry can be granted through the sphere of science and research and care for the education and training of young technicians looking for the way to encourage young people to study technical disciplines.

An integral part of both the internal and external communication are the co-operation with the Association of Industry and Transportation CR, with the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic and the Chamber of Commerce CR, as well as collecting, processing and follow up distribution of the economic and mainly statistic mate-rials from the industry in question. It is done through the cooperation with the Czech Statistical Office, Economic and Statistical Committees of CECIMO in Brussels and with the company Oxford Economics. The members of the expert section collaborate with the staff of the Czech Trade agency and Diplomatic Corps of the Czech Republic to develop territorial studies which are of great help to our manufacturers in the rapidly changing condi-tions of the world market.

Association of Exporters– established in 2002 with the aim to maintain and improve the competi-tiveness of Czech companies, especially those in export. Representatives of the Association monitor the tendencies and development of European Union legislation and point out possible risks for the Czech Republic. Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Cra�s of the Czech Republic (AMSP ČR) associates small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as tradespeople and their organisations from the entire republic on an open apolitical platform. It represents the interests of more than 260 000 entrepreneurial subjects and keeps its important position within European structures. The association was founded in 2001. Since 2009 AMSP implements a series of unique independent surveys on the views on the problem areas in business. The results are a key basis for the key positions of the Association.

Actual focus of the AMSP ČR is to two main fields: FAMILY BUSINESS and YOUNG BUSINESS, the greatest project of AMSP ČR focused on young entrepreneurs. From 2014 has started two new projects focused on CRAFTS and support of WOMEN’S ENTREPRENEURSHIP.

Through its members the association promotes its opinions regarding current economic and social problems being debated in administrative and legislative bodies and thus assists in the creation of a favourable framework and climate for business. The AMSP ČR requires on bodies of the state administration constant interest, effort and specialist ability in order to create a realistic strategy for developing and viable business activities and ensuring suitable conditions for the business climate in the CR.

The Association also announced its own grant program for members of the AMSP ČR with direct financial reward. In order to make the entrepreneurs more visible, the AMSP ČR nominates expert evaluateor and/or provides the auspices of many competitions such as: “Pikes of the Czech Business”, “UNICREDIT DHL Export Award” competition “Czech Businesswomen Awards”, “Festival of Czech Innovation”, “Best Innovator”, “Visionaries”, “Via Bona” and others. The Association is one of the co-founders of the Coalition for Trans-parent Business.

YEAR OF CRAFTS 2016The Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Cra�s of the Czech Republic (AMSP CR) is continuing in its massive offensive effort in sup-port of small sole traders and proclaims 2016 as the YEAR OF CRAFTS. By so doing, we continue on from our “We’re Rooting for Cra�s!“ campaign, as part of which we are putting the spotlight on cra�s guilds and associations, as well as specific cra�s deeds. In this regard, 2016 will be entirely unique and we will present cra�s at dozens of events as a key tool for maintaining the level of services accessible to people in the regions and rural areas as well as an interesting choice for the young generation. We will familiarize consum-ers with how to evaluate the quality of work performed by cra�s people, will instigate a professional discussion about the educational system and link it

Chamber of Trade and Industry for CIS Countries is a special economic chamber which was set up by the Economic Chamber of the Czech Republic in 1997.Its main goal is to assist Czech businessmen and entities in their activities in the CIS countries.Over more than 18 years of its existence the Chamber has built a significant position among Czech companies. At the moment, there are more than 140 members plus several hundreds of other enterprises with interests in the CIS countries the Chamber co-operates with. The Chamber closely co-operates with Czech governmental institutions – the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, both Parliament chambers, and others. The Chamber organises various events focusing on the development of business co-operation between the Czech Republic and individual CIS members. Among others, we can highlight business missions to the CIS regions and countries, seminars and expert conferences, or B2B sessions with CIS entrepreneurs coming to the Czech Republic. Significant partners of the Chamber are the Embassy of the Confederation of Independent States in the Czech Republic, Czech embassies and general consulates in the CIS countries, and most of all central and regional chambers of commerce and industry in individual states. Apart from the chambers of commerce and industry the Chamber also co-operates with other foreign institutions joining enterprises out of the CIS countries, such as associations of industrialists and entrepreneurs, national agencies for development, etc.

Electrical and Electronic Association of the Czech Republic (ElA) was found-ed in January 1992 as an economically as well legally independent union of employers and entrepreneurs. This organization associates legal as well as natural persons from within the electronic and electrical industry, and further subjects with common interests with the electrical industry. The association defends the interests of employers based on the principles of entrepreneurial democracy. We enable for our members to take part in the process of crea-tion of new legislation, in the work of diverse professional groups, and in other related activities.

EMPLOYER RELATED AREAWe hold negotiations with labour unions in line with Act no. 2/1991 Coll. on collective bargaining, as amended, on behalf of those member organizations that give us their consent for this. We pursue a social dialogue with the KOVO Labour Union, and we conclude higher-level collective agreements. This way, we help our members to ensure social conciliation. We supported the found-ing of the Electrotechnical Sector Council which prepares a profession cata-logue including definitions of requirements for employees. We search for and substantiate projects supported by state aid in the area of human resources; we help our member subjects to be assigned these projects and to complete them. We created and administer the jobs.electroindustry.cz portal which serves to acquire quality staff.

ENTREPRENEUR RELATED AREAWe support export activities of member companies.We exercise a liberal policy and we actively support the elimination of non-tariff obstructions in trade business. We provide for Association presentations and accompanying programmes at trade and business fairs, exhibitions, and con-ferences in the domestic area as well as abroad. We are one of the founding members of the Trade Fair Bureau of the Confederation of Industry of the CR where we suggest electro-technical fairs to be included in the list of events supported by the state. We participate at, and we ourselves also organize business missions, cooperate with partner electro-technical associations, and search for business opportunities that you might use. We maintain contacts with relevant embassies and partners from abroad. We negotiate with indi-vidual fair managements that organize exhibitions or fairs in the electric and electronic sectors to provide discounts and other benefits for our members.

We promote out membersWe publish a member organizations catalogue, the ElA DIRECTORY, which not only is distributed abroad but which is also delivered to foreign embas-sies in Prague, and to Czech business and economic embassy departments throughout the world. This member organizations catalogue is the printed version of the corresponding portion of our website www.electroindustry.cz, and it serves as the initial information source about the Czech electroindustry and its companies.

We organize conferencesWe keep informing the professional public about the developments in the electro-technical industry through professional conferences where leading experts discuss current issues and topics. We interconnect activities of the industry and of universities which does not only apply to the area of the Czech Republic. We started participating on the work of the Forum of the Industry and Universities.

We purchase energies for our members centrallyAs the central submitter at the commodity stock exchange, we purchase electricity and gas for our members. Thanks to the leverage of the high demand, we are constantly achieving very interesting prices, and moreover, the complete process is very simple, transparent, and it fulfils the require-ments set by the public contract legislation.

EU ProjectsElA was the partner and the receiving party of several subsidy programmes, and also is available for its members as a consultative body, partner, and assistant when seeking suitable contacts with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Technology Agency of the CR or CzechInvest agency.

We have an own collective system, RETELAIn order to comply with the obligations resulting from the Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment legislation, we founded and are administering an own collective system for the disposal of WEEE. There are already over 1000 subjects taking advantage of this system. Our system is transparent, it covers all groups of WEEE including PV power plant technology equipment. The Cluster is an association of more than 70 companies active in the machin-ery and engineering industry. Founded in 2003, its members include also follow-up businesses, firms providing services and academic institutions. The overall annual sales of the member companies reach 3.1 billion USD and in aggregate the Cluster has 28 000 employees.

The Cluster focuses in particular on the development of supply chains, estab-lishment of purchase alliances and organization of educational projects for its members, as well as conferences, seminars and workshops for specialists and the general public.

Our companies contribute tens of millions of Czech Crown seach year to the support of technical education promoting scholarship holders, co-financing the development of matching branches at universities, running in house technical schools and organizing networking events.

The production program of our companies covers almost the entire field of mechanical engineering ranging from individual machinery products to the construction and assembling of the biggest technological units. The Cluster is successful also in the manufacturing of industrial pumps, all kinds of valves, tubes and pipe equipment.

The leaders of the Cluster, companies VÍTKOVICE MACHINERY GROUP, Žďas, a.s. and Strojírny a stavby Třinec, a.s., significantly influence and support the activities of the whole association. Czech Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers Association (SVDSZ) has been established in the year 1991 as a result of an effort to push ahead the collective requirements of Czech producers of woodworking machines, equipment and tools towards the State Authorities and for the development of their commercial and production possibilities.

SVDSZ associate 17 Czech companies incl. The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology of Mendel University in Brno.The members have in their production programme variety of woodworking machines, accessories and tools and they can also offer and deliver complete technological equipment for sawmills, for drying kilns, for production of glued balk and battenboard, for building-joinery production, for the furniture, windows and doors production, wooden waste processing, etc.

Main activities of SVDSZ are linked with the organization of exhibitions and fairs abroad and in the Czech Republic on advantageous conditions with close cooperation with EUMABOIS.

The union is an interest group of production co-operatives that are mostly, within the context of companies in the Czech Republic, small and mid-sized firms. It is companies in this category that are the foundation and stabilizer of the economy of every country that is managed in a reasonable way.The Union of Czech Production Co-operatives secures its members a wide range of services, and it supports and promotes the interests of its member co-operatives at the national and international level. Our co-operatives can rely on the high standards and professionalism of our consulting in the area of legal services and legislation, tax and financial consulting, assistance with preparing projects for European and national funding programs, expert assistance in questions of energy and the environment, and also support for business through joint promotional events and participation at trade fairs and exhibitions.We secure centralized purchasing for them with the goal of lowering operating costs, and we organize expert training and other individual forms of requested support and services. The union assists co-operatives with their export activities.

MembersThe Union’s membership base consists of hundreds of production co-opera-tives achieving sales worth many billions of Czech crowns. The broad scope of branches of industry of the co-operatives includes large producers in field of mechanical engineering, manufacturers of chipboard materials and furniture, suppliers for the automotive industry (with hundreds and even thousands of employees), mid-sized firms in the construction, chemistry, and garment industries, and also small firms successfully manufacturing toys, packaging, or Christmas decorations, as well as firms providing services. These are successful, independent entrepreneurial subjects manufacturing a whole range of high-quality products, mostly for customers in the Czech Republic and the European Union.There is great depth to the history of co-operatives, and in Czech-speaking countries, they have been building their tradition for over 150 years. They have always been able to find their place on the market in Europe and beyond, and to this day, because of their quality, they convince a broad spectrum of customers about their ability to react flexibly to the demands of the market. The typical characteristics of co-operatives are efficiency, potential for innovation, and a personal relationship of their members with the co-operative, which gives a number of co-operatives the character of reliable family companies.One of the major assets of production co-operatives is the fact that in addition to doing business under the tough, demanding conditions of the European market, they also pursue the social interests of their employees. Several dozen of our co-operatives are going the route of attempting to integrate people with a reduced ability to work into the labor process. These are production co-operatives with disabled employees accounting for more than 50% of their workforce, or social co-operatives. SOVAK CR (Water Supply and Sewerage Association of the Czech Republic) is a voluntary, non-governmental association representing inter-ests of companies, suppliers and other relevant organisations involved in the sector of public water supply and wastewater collection and treatment. The association was established in 1989 and now represents 115 regular and 138 associated members of which the regular members provide public water supply to more than 95 % of the Czech water market. The association has 14 specialist groups and ensures that all legislation and norms relevant for its members are thoroughly reviewed and consulted before they are approved in the legislation process. SOVAK ČR is involved in the lobbying and legisla-tion process on the level of European Union by its permanent membership in the European Federation of National Water and Wastewater Associations – EUREAU.
