Convention Deemed Huge Success

of the American Killifish Association

The

ST. LOUIS, MO - Like the attendees said, the just-concluded 50th anniversary AKA convention was one of the best ever!

“I’ve attended a number of conventions, but I have to say this was one of the most enjoayble,” said MKA member Eric Beyer. Beyer wasn’t the only one complimentary of the weekend. Many of the people who attended the convention echoed his compliments.

Among the outstanding moments during this year’s show was the 50 Years of the American Killifish Association by Charles Nunziata and Tony Terceira as the two long-time AKA’ers talked about the many ways the AKA has affected the aquarium hob-by, the people responsible and those who continue to strive to improve the organization.

Holger Hengstler evoked laughter during each of his three presentations as he began Friday night with the outtakes, diffi-culties and humorous moments during his numerous collecting trips and continued with his banquet presentation on Saturday night about collecting in Ethiopia. He also held an impromptu program following the banquet speech on his recent trip to Su-dan where his team encountered everything from one mem-ber being refused entrance into the coutry to restrictions of where they could travel and a member becoming very ill. Still they collected several nothos despite the problems.

The auction on Sunday set a record for a single item being sold at $1060.00. This was Ken McKeighen’s exquisite mural of fifty killies representing each year of the AKA. David Mikkleson and Clay Crawford battled it out with Dave finally winning. The auction raised over $9,000 for the AKA.

With over 230 entries in the show and 500 plus in the Fish Sale Room, the number and quality of the fish were amazing. Added to the 100 pairs of Rare Species and 50 plus donations, the auction had over 400 pairs available.

Gary Greenwood received the Killifish Exhibitor of the Year for the fifth time and six members of the AKA were honored as Distinguished Members (see next page). Tony Terceira was the Killifish Hobbyist of the Year and Gary Pack took the trophy for Best in Show.

Speakers for the weekend included Dr. Glen Collier who presented a seminar on how the changes in geography over thousands of years can affect the development of species sepa-ration. Dr. Collier was one of the two Charter Members in at-tendance this weekend. Dr. Harry Specht was the other. Both were recognized for their continued membership of over fifty years in the AKA.

Mike Hellweg of the St. Louis area did an excellent presenta-tion on live foods as did Gary Lange on Blue-eyes - the rain-bowfish that has many similarities to killies. The G1 Gang from SNEKA included Dave Hardenbrook, Bill Logue and Rich Pierce focused on the hobby aspects of their fishrooms and the Hot-tos. Dave brought a part of his famous octopus. Capping off the seminars, Charles Nunziata and Tony Terceira took every-one on a collecting trip through Florida.

The weekend concluded Sunday evening with a trip to Con-vention Chairman Jack Heller’s home for a fishroom tour and barbecue. On Monday a second tour to Mike Heller’s fish-room was attended by several people and finally the Collecting Trip was led by Nevin Aspinwall and Dave Hemmerlein. The col-lectors were able to obtain a large number of fish and everyone took home something they wanted.

All in all, it was a great weekend and now its time to look for-ward to next year in Portland, OR.

A Big Thank You The Organizing Committee of the 2012 AKA Convention want to ac-knowledge the people who made it all possible:

Darlene Weismann and Ruth Warner for organizing the Fish Sale Room; Nevin Aspinwall and Art & Max Leutermann for setting up the stands and tanks; Bob McDonnell and Dave Hemmerlein for registra-tion; Dave Hemmerlein for doing a great job on the auction; Rick Ivik for all the hard work he did and oversaw during breakdown, setup and much more. All the runners during the auction. Rich Pierce and Tony Terceira for the photography. Dr. Dan Nielsen for making the an-nouncements and introductions; and finally MASI for assisting in many aspects of the show. And all those who participated in so many aspects of making this a great weekend. Jack Heller & Tom Grady

Six members of the AKA were honored as Dis-tinguished Members of the AKA. This ward is given to members who have contributed to the AKA and the killifish hobby in their regions over the years. This year the award was presented to Allen Semeit of ARC, Mike McNamee of LIKA/MAKA, Mike Jacobs of SKS, Harry Faustmann of LIKA/MAKA, Ken McKeighan and Gary Green-wood of WAKO.

The Board of Trustees Official Reports

Greetings All, Convention 2012 is now history. I was honored to have been able to spend a few hours in the presence of so many great contributors to our hobby. Seeing Dr. Specht, Roger Langton and a few other long-time members of the AKA again was a real pleasure. I appreciated the opportunity to sit in the audience and listen to Dr. Glenn Collier, Tony Terceira, Charlie Nunziata, Richard Pierce and Mike Hellweg just to name a few. The list goes on and my appreciation goes on as well to Tom Grady and Jack Heller for organizing a well run convention.

Many of my long-time friends in the Missouri Aquarium Society (MASI) were there to hear the talks, take part in the operations and bid for fish in the auction on Sunday. Many were surprised to hear the prices for the fish in the auction but they got the chance to see fish and purchase fish they would see nowhere else. All came away with new impressions of the Killifish family and the AKA. It was a very worthwhile event for my friends. And speaking of MASI, the convention must thank MASI for the loan of the screen, projector, speaker and entire audio-visual system used in the convention’s talks and auction. This loan saved the convention considerable expense.

The MASI Aquarium Club Challenge of the Year for 2012 was the AKA’s George Maier Fund. MASI was able to donate $800 to the George Maier Fund. The check was present-ed to Charlie Nunziata at the Saturday night’s Awards Presentations. A raffle of chances for a collecting trip with Brian Perkins of WildPeru I heard brought in over $600. Kenny McKeighan’s Killifish Mural sold at the Sunday Auction for well over $1,000. Thanks to MASI, Brian and Kenny. It was a great weekend for fund raising.

This Convention was a most enjoyable one. We managed to pick up a couple of bags of fish in the Fish sale room and we appreciated Darlene and her crew of Greg, Gary, John and Rick who kept things running smoothly. The dinner on Saturday night was excellent. The awards presentation took too long but they usually do. The after dinner presentation of the fish collecting expedition through Ethiopia by Holger Hengstler was as entertaining and informative as he has been in the years past and well worth the wait. The prices held through the auction and the bidding for McKeighan’s Mural was even exciting. A thousand dollars is a lot to pay for an item in a tropical fish auction! We were pleased to be able to purchase three more bags of fish in a well-run auction with competent auctioneers and runners. We were not able to participate in the collecting trip on Monday but we heard it was a good one.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten to thank everyone personally, so “Thank You!” to all who came, all who helped, and all who contributed to making the 50th Anniversary of the AKA a most wonderful event.

Sue and I are anxiously making plans for next years’ Convention in Portland. Having been there once has given us some ideas of what to do next time we are there for some extra days of vacation.

See you on line and at the shows,

Charles Harrison

BOT Business Update for May 2012

by Brian Watters BOT SecretaryDISCUSSION ITEMS:

D-2012-2: Revision of the Killifish Hobbyist of the Year (KHY) program rules. Following extensive discussion a final proposal has been drafted by Kent Rus-sell, chairman of the KHY program. The issue will soon be voted on by the BOT and the revised rules in place for the start of the 2012-2013 KHY year.

D-2012-4: Update of the BOT Procedures Manual. Recent changes to the George Maier Fund have required an addition to the BOT procedures Manual. The BOT is taking this opportunity to review the man-ual and discuss any further changes that may be considered necessary.

D-2012-5: Foreign exchange memberships. A subcommittee is reviewing exchange memberships with foreign killifish associations in order to update the process and ensure that materials are being sent to current and proper recipients and that there is appropriate reciproca-tion associated with the exchanges.

D-2012-11: AKA Webmaster. Discussion aimed exploring the various options available to the BOT in order to suitably maintain the website and the many associated functions as carried out by the present webmaster, Barry Cooper, who has indicated his desire to step down from that position.

D-2012-12: New & Rare Species Committee. Discussion regarding the termination of the New & Rare Species Committee and the manner in which unused funds should be returned to the AKA. Since the 2012 national convention was an AKA-sponsored event, it was proposed that the unused funds should be used to cover expenses incurred with the ac-quisition of N&R fish for the event and any funds remaining after that would be returned to the general fund of the association. The decision to terminate the N&RSC was based on the fact that the service could not be run on an eco-nomically viable basis, given the many difficulties and high costs involved in acquiring suitable fish and the generally low use made of the service by the membership.

D-2012-13: Membership Committee procedures. A review of the procedures involved in the application and acceptance for membership in the AKA, and options for improving the process.

D-2012-14: National Convention 2014. The BOT is now seeking and accepting bids by affiliate groups for the hosting of the 2014 national convention.

Judging Committee News

First, a personal thanks to all the gentleman that graciously gave up their Satur-day morning at this year’s convention to exercise their evaluation ability by serv-ing, voluntarily or begged, as judges of the entrants. Without their efforts it would not been a show but rather a display. As I looked out over the judging room as the evaluations progressed it was apparent that a new crop of judges needs to be en-couraged and mentored by the current judges before we lose the benefits existing presently in their respective expertises. It was therefore very rewarding to note the incredibly high number, in both classes attempted and AKA’ers attempting to certify, after judging was completed. I have been attending the conventions for a little over two decades and cannot remember (among other things I can no longer remember) such a strong turnout. It is now time to recognize our new judges based upon the certification attempts at the convention. Please feel free to offer your own congratulatory messages to these new judges who are now guaranteed full employment at no salary at future conventions and numerous shows. I encourage all those below to continue in their current journey to reach ‘Senior All’ status.

Our newest judges and their current respective statuses.Keith Cook – Senior All

Tony Pinto – Classes 2, 5, 7, 9, 11Kurt Zahringer – Class 4

Eric Beyer – Classes 5, 7, 10Chris Weatherford – Classes 6, 7

David Mikkelsen – Classes 2, 4, 7, 13Peter Marceau – Class 9

Second, a revised Judges’ List will be issued later this summer. Third, with all the nomenclatural changes a revision of the AKA Killifish Judging Program Class Lists document is being reviewed and revised.

At finally, I am going to attempt to attend several local shows later this year in order to participate as an attendee, a speaker and/or to drum up support for the AKA Judging Program. If there is interest in attempting to certify at local shows please contact me to discuss my potential attendance or proctoring of the exams by designee in my absence should it not be one of those I am able to attend.

Again, thanks to all that helped to make the Convention a success and congratulations to our newest judges.

Help Jaka! To all you killienuts out there that love JAKA and the beautiful group of killies known as the Kathetys group that includes the species Aphyosemion elberti, A. exiguum, A kekemense, A dargei, A bamilekorum and all their many location sub varieties, pay attention! Importantthings are happening! Ten years ago I was the guest Editor on an issue of JAKA that was dedicated just to the Kathetys group. It was chock full of beautiful color photos of these fish and infor-mation on where they came from, how to keep them and how to breed them. It was well received and the AKA has sold out of the many extra copies it printed. In the Ten years since that issue, many new collections have been done and some new exciting discoveries have been made which may well turn Kathetys on it’s head. Last year, a group of experienced killie keepers got together at the convention and after talking it over, I decided to lead another effort to put out another special issue on the Kathety’s group.

The group has authored some fine articles for the issue so far, but the reason I am appealing to the membership as a whole is I do not have enough articles to complete the issue at this time. I need articles from a fresh perspective. This is your chance to help the AKA and JAKA while being a part of something special!

Long time very respected Fish breeders like Jim Gasior, Gary Greenwood, & Ed Kray have contributed, newer members like David Snell have written really good articles and we have overseas contributions from Wolfgang Eberl and Mogens Juhl. You too can be part of this issue, which will be remembered for a long time for its beauty and its great articles!

I will help with editing or anything else a prospective author needs help with. You just need to pick a species or color loca-tion and let me know.

We are also look for really good images of the killies in this group as well.!!

NorthEast Weekend Set for Oct. 19th-21stALBANY, NY - The annual regional mini-convention for the Eastern U.S. has been scheduled for Oct. 19th-21st in Albany, NY at the Ramada Inn Plaza. This year Upstate New York Killifish As-sociation (UNYKA) will be the host and plans are underway to bring in speakers and create all the events.

Once again there will be a Saturday Ban-quet along with a hospitality room both Friday and Saturday evenings. As is tradi-tional, UNYKA will provide a keg of beer, but any other alcohol must be brought in or purchased at the bar.

There will be open box sales Saturday morning and speakers will begin after noon. We expect three seminars on Saturday and also a banquet speaker.

Check-in of show fish begins Friday at noon and continues until 10am Saturday. Judg-ing will be at 11 am. There will be 7 classes this year. NEW is part of the AKA Killifish Exhibitor of the Year program, so make sure you send in some entries.

Sunday’s auction will begin at about 10am so all the fish will be sold early enough for everyone to make their way home at a decent hour. Because of UNYKA’s affiliation with the NorthEast Council, we expect to allow some non-killies into the auction this year, but there will be restrictions. We also allow hard goods.

Details of this year’s NEW will begin to appear in the July Issue of the BNL
