In Memory ofFran Sugarman

The Miquon community sustained a great loss recently with the passing of Fran Sugarman, mom to Rory (3rd grade) and Suzanna (class of 2008) in early February. Moved by this sad event, Erica and Jeri’s 5/6 group decided to contribute a week’s pizza sale income as a donation to Miquon in Fran’s memory. This gesture sparked a tremendous wave of generosity amongst our children. With no pressure from any adults, Miquon’s compassionate kids went home and collected birthday and tooth fairy money to add to their lunch order envelopes. In dog-eared bills and bits of change, the group raised $1,031, which they presented to the development office. This kid-directed effort is such a powerful testament of support and a demonstration of our students’ loving care and concern for their fellow community members. As a community organizer herself and a parent who was committed to service learning in schools, we are sure that Fran would have been honored and proud of this grass-roots effort.

In honor of Bill Northcutt’s deep knowledge and love of the Miquon

The Clisby LibraryMiquon’s Clisby Library is one of the

school’s treasures. Every year, librarian Diane Sychowski works tirelessly to

find new and innovative titles to stock the shelves. Many families support the Miquon tradition of donating a book to the library in honor of a student’s

birthday. Others have participated in the fall book fair and have added a book for

Miquon to their family’s order. Still others have made financial contributions that

they have allocated to the library.

Diversity Book Drive

For the last few years, the Miquon Diversity Committee has held a book drive

at the Spring Fair to assist in building up classroom, library, and specialist’s

collections of books on all kinds of diversity topics for all grade levels.
