Financial Literacy Series
The following Financial Literacy courses are brought to you
courtesy of Chelsea Groton Bank and are free of charge.
Please note that you must still register for any classes.
Budgeting Basics—March 6; 5:30—6:30 PM
Learn about what a budget is and how to make it work for you. This class will step you through the process of creating a budget
for whatever your situation.
Credit Do’s and Don’ts—March 27; 5:30—7:30 PM
A close look at credit, what having credit means, understanding what a credit report is, what things affect your credit report and
how to check it, discusses what your FICO score is and what that means, and gives a you a comprehensive list of things to do and
not do to make sure you have good credit.
Financially Fit—March 18; 5:30—7:30 PM
Financially fit is a program designed by Chelsea Groton Bank you get your finances on track. You will learn how to budget and
what your FICO score means and how to improve it.
Financial Recovery—March 4; 5:30—7:30 PM
Financial Recovery will assess your current financial situation, identify ways to increase income and prioritize expenses, develop a
financial recovery plan, and recognize how to guard against credit repair scams.
Keep it Safe—March 11; 5:30—7:30 PM
Keep it safe will help you recognize how federal deposit insurance protects your money, how to guard against identity theft,
recognize elder financial abuse, and describe the ways you need to be financially prepared for disasters.
Money Matters—March 13; 5:30—7:00 PM
Money Matters will list the steps for setting financial goals, track daily spending habits, prepare a personal spending plan, identify
ways to decrease spending and recognize spending plan tools that will help you manage your bills.
Smart Money for Older Adults—April 1; 5:30—8:30 PM
Smart Money for Older Adults will help you recognize and reduce the risk of elder financial abuse, guard against identity theft,
plan for unexpected loss of ability to manage your funds, and prepare for disasters.
First Time Home Buyers—March 25; 5:30—7:30 PM
Our First Time Home Buyers Program will explain the advantages and disadvantages of renting versus owning a home, identify
questions to determine your readiness to buy a home, talk about the steps required to buy a home, discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of different mortgage options, and describe how interest rates, taxes and insurance affect the amount of your home.

Business and Technology
Beginner’s Guide to Computer Basics
Learn how to navigate your computer and cell phone. Explore the Internet, organize your digital photos, download digital
music and movies, write letters and memos, and participate in online banking.

Facebook for Business—ONE NIGHT ONLY
Facebook for business will discuss why a business, nonprofit, group or organization should utilize Facebook, explain how to
start a business page and how that is different than a personal page, and discuss best practice for managing Facebook for
businesses.

Public Speaking—ONE NIGHT ONLY
Public Speaking will help you learn to become a more confident public speaker. Whether you are advanced in your career or just starting
out, having the confidence to speak in public is an important skill.

Health and Fitness
Gentle Tai Chi
Tai chi chuan is an introductory Chinese Martial Art course that is performed slowly,
in a relaxed fashion with fluid graceful motions. It is based on traditional Chinese
philosophies and is useful for body and mind. It increases balance, range of motion,
and helps to relieve stress.

Total Body HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
Cardio conditioning for every fitness level. Build strength, improve cardio endurance and develop precision &
speed without lifting a single weight! Based on the principles of MAX Interval Training. No additional equip-
ment is required, just bring a mat!

Core de Force
Core de Force, inspired by mixed martial arts, is broken into 3-minute rounds of punching, kicking and
jabbing, these Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai moves blast fat, strengthen the core & define your abs!
You can punch, kick and sweat at your own pace! Just bring a mat!

Guide to Caring for Aging Parents
Explore strategies for how to cope with the day-to-day challenges of providing a
safe & senior-friendly environment to loved ones throughout the caregiving process.
Topics will include strategies for deciding when it’s time to become concerned, how
to encourage socialization and avoid isolation, and how to respect the elders’ need
to remain independent.

Career Readiness
In this career readiness course, you will create an effective resume or improve the
one you already have. Transform your resume into a powerful tool that will get you
interviews. Learn to make the most of your work experience and discover how to
use references to your advantage. Learn how to create a LinkedIn profile and
effectively search for job opportunities.

Career Advancement
Get ready to further your career by increasing the professionalism of your electronic communication. This course will
familiarize you with terminology, screen components, and the most commonly used functions offered y Microsoft Word.
Emphasis will be place on proper document formatting techniques (including letters, memos, and reports) and file
management. This course will also include an introduction to Microsoft Outlook. You will learn to create, edit, and manage
professional-looking emails, maintain calendars and schedule tasks to improve your productivity.

Culinary Adventures
Receive personalized chef instruction when you join Chef Kim for a series of cooking classes that will include a culinary
journey around the world in five weeks. Your culinary adventure will include classes such as A Taste of Asia, Desserts
101, French Cooking, Northern & Southern Italy, and Soups & Sauces from Around the Country. Come enjoy a journey
filled with fun, humor, education, and socializing. No special skills necessary! Chef Kim Reynolds is a Culinary Institute
of America, Hyde Park, NY graduate. She is a chef/instructor, Food Service Director, caterer, and Entrepreneur. An
additional materials fee of $30 is payable to instructor the evening of the first class. This will include food, printed
recipes, & all extra take-home packages. Please register for the Monday (Session 1) OR Wednesday (Session 2) class sec-
tion.

Basic Cake Decorating
Learn the basics of cake decorating including how to level and torte, determine base size, prep fill bags, make & tint frosting, and create basic decorations such as balloons, flowers, and borders. A additional one-time materials fee of $10 will include all needed tools. You will need to provide your own edibles (cake, frosting). Instructor will provide recipes.
Class Meets: Wednesdays, 5:30—7:00 PM Course Fee: $49 (+ $10 materials fee)

Cake Decorating with Fondant
Learn essential techniques, such as covering a cake with fondant, cutting shapes and even tiering a cake. Learn how to create different types of flowers and borders. While you don’t need to be a master at cake decorating to work with fondant, it will be helpful if you already know how to frost a cake. An additional one-time $15 materials fee will include all needed tools. You will need to provide your own fondant. Instructor will provide recipes.

Confectionary Recreations
Wondering how to make your cakes look like the ones on Pinterest? Bring your ideas and we’ll create them! Recreate a cake for a special occasion. An additional one-time $10 materials fee will include all needed tools. You need to provide all edibles (cake, frosting). Instructor will provide recipes.

Creating a Butterfly Garden
You will learn how to create a garden (any size) that attracts butterflies and other important pollinators. This will include
the plants the adult butterfly prefers to feed from as well as the host plants they rely on for egg laying and supporting their
offspring. Design ideas will be shared and materials provided for use in your garden. Butterflies are an important part of
our ecosystem. Planting a garden to attract them is fun and rewarding! An additional materials fee of $10 is payable to
instructor the evening of the first class.

The Amazing Monarch Butterfly
In this class you’ll learn about this awe-inspiring creature and it’s life cycle. The host
plants, preferred nectar sources, and predators they face will be discussed. Instructions
on creating a habitat to raise them will also be given as well as the benefits of raising
them indoors. After this course is finished, you’ll have the knowledge to be a “citizen
scientist”. An additional materials fee of $10 is payable to instructor the evening of the
first class.

Stenciling with Acrylic Paints
Acrylic paints are versatile, easy-to-clean, and offer brilliant colors. You will learn a variety of
paint application techniques as you paint using stencils on a variety of surfaces - wood, glass,
ceramic, and canvas. Artists of all levels are welcome! A additional one-time materials fee of $20
payable to the instructor will cover the cost of paints and other take-home materials.

Language and Literacy
Conversational Spanish I—Basic
Learn the basic conversation skills of Spanish. Begin with important, fundamental
knowledge in areas such as basic expressions, colloquial language, numbers, simple
conversations & more. Emphasis will be on communication & writing for everyday
expressions.

Conversational Spanish II—Intermediate
Prerequisite: Conversational Spanish Basic/Session I, or Basic Spanish Knowledge Expand on the elements learned in our
Conversational Spanish Basic class and develop more sophisticated conversational skills, sentence structure, &
advanced communication.
