Newsletter #1 – April 2015 Contingent Leaders Welcome Welcome to the Australian Contingent to Inferno 2016! We have assembled the largest Australian Contingent ever to leave Australia’s shores to an international event and l look forward to meeting each and every one of you in the lead up at our orientation days and on the event itself. We are all part of the team and we each have a role to play during the lead up and during the event. I know the Contingent Management Team will achieve its goal to bring you one of the very best Scouting events, but l need you to do your part to make this event a success. As we progress over the next few months you are going to need to provide additional information back to us, pick optional activities, make prompt payments, maybe provide additional medical information and work through the travel arrangements with us. You need to respond quickly to our requests and get the details back to us promptly so we can keep working on bringing you the best event ever. You also need to keep yourself informed. This can be done a number of ways, including reading our newsletters, emails, following us on Facebook and following the New Zealand Inferno event page. Once expeditions are allocated later this year (hopefully around September) you will get the opportunity to meet your new unit mates online prior to attending. Finally stay excited, this is going to be one of the best experiences of your life! Keep your eye on the goal, keep fundraising to help reduce the load on your parents and yourself, and we look forward to seeing you all later this year.

Message from the International Commissioner, Scouts Australia Congratulations on being part of history! Your Contingent, of an estimated 670 youth members and adult leaders, will be the largest to ever leave our shores to an international Scouting event. This is a remarkable achievement! As the International Commissioner of Scouts Australia, my vision is "for every youth member of Scouts Australia to have an international Scouting experience." Your Contingent to the New Zealand Venture is contributing to realising that vision. Your Contingent is also special in having participants from every Branch of Scouts Australia. It is truly a national Contingent. As well as meeting New Zealand Scouts, you will get to know Venturers and adult Leaders from every other State and Territory of Australia. I congratulate your Contingent Leader, Phil Britt, and his entire Contingent Management Team, on the outstanding preparations they have done to date. There is no doubt they will deliver on their commitment to you -‐ to bring you one of the best Scouting experiences ever. I hope you are looking forward to the experience as much as I am -‐ and 668 others! Good Scouting!
Neville Tomkins International Commissioner

More Line Leaders needed! We have managed to secure additional Venturer positions over and above our original plans. As a result we now have additional Line Leader positions available. We are looking for another 20 enthusiastic leaders to join the team to support our Venturers! This will make the final Contingent size 670 members. Do you know an enthusiastic Venturer Leader who loves a challenge and works well with youth? If so please let them know about the Australian Contingent so they can share in the experience and support our Venturers! Flights Now is the time to triple check and make sure all your details are correct – we’re locking in all your flight bookings by the end of April. It’s super important that we give all the right details to the airlines, so we can get jet setting down to NZ without any problems! If you want to return to a different airport to your departure we need know this too. Passports To travel to New Zealand with the Contingent you will need a current passport with an expiry date of no earlier than 16 July 2016. We require your passport details by no later than 31 August 2015. If you do not currently have a passport, or it expires before or during the Venture, you need to make arrangements now to apply for or to renew your passport. You can pickup a passport application form at any Australia Post outlet or find more information online at www.passports.gov.au Passports can take some time to arrange, so we would recommend you follow this up NOW. Pre Tour The itinerary is looking packed for the Pre Tour. We’re going to be flying in to the beautiful Queenstown on the 27 December, where you’ll be able to spend your time having a ton of fun and adventure. Besides having the options of hitting up the Nevis Swing, going parasailing, exploring an amazing canyon, or chowing down a famous Fergburger, you’ll also be heading along and hitting up Milford Sound and trying out Mountain Biking at Gobblers Lodge. Then, we’ll be flying up to Auckland on New Years Eve and having an amazing party together and welcome the
New Year in style before getting ready for our new adventure – Inferno! We’ll have a couple of days exploring Auckland and New Zealand’s beautiful North Island, including hikes with some #instaworthy sights, surfing, paintball, and a nice warm dinner at Hot Water Beach before heading back to Auckland ready to meet our Non Pre Tour mates for Inferno 2016! The Pre Tour features a number of included activities, and a points system where you can pick from a range of optional activities. There will also be the option to purchase additional points for those that want to jam pack their pre tour experience, or choose from some premium activities. Pre Tour activities selection will open in September and you will be able to build your own pre tour itinerary using our online adventure builder. The pre tour will operate in pre tour units, based around some key activities that you pick. This way you will be with people who want to do similar activities, but rest assured you will still be able to see your mates in other units and do activities with them too. Each pre tour unit will have between 16 and 21 Venturers (both male and female) and 2 Unit Leaders. With people from all over Australia, it will be a truly Australian Contingent. Phase 1 Expeditions By now you should have all selected your Phase 1 expeditions from the extensive list of 30 available. All of the expeditions offer a diverse range of activities to suit all tastes. Phase 1 expeditions are assigned by the New Zealand Venture Organising Committee (VOC), not by the Australian Contingent. The VOC has advised they hope to assign expeditions by September and you will be notified which Phase 1 expedition you have been assigned shortly after.
Phase 2 On/Off site selections The second, but just as important part of the Venture is Phase 2, where you get to pick your on and off site activities. Details of these will come down the track, and again these are organised by the VOC. You will advised of the options available later this year, and you will be able to select these through the online application system.

How to order & choose your merchandise Shirt Sizing All Contingent members will be issued with two polo shirts as part of your Contingent merchandise. Please review the size you’ve chosen in the online system (as printed in the welcome letter) and if you feel the size is incorrect, update it online immediately. You can update your shirt size by clicking ‘T-‐Shirt/Hat’ at https://registrations.international.scouts.com.au How to calculate your shirt size: Grab a shirt from your collection that fits well and lay it out flat on a table. Smooth it out (no wrinkles). Measure from just under the sleeve seam, across the chest to the other sleeve. This is called the ‘half chest measurement’. Sizes should be rounded up to the next largest size, and remember to take into account you may grow a little between now and the trip. Below are the shirt sizes we have available. The ladies sizes are cut to a ladies fit, whereas the men’s are more of a unisex fit.

How to choose your TentNZ customs are very strict with bringing used tents into their country, so we are providing the option to buy a great tent, at a great price, ready for pickup at the Venture in New Zealand! If you don’t purchase a contingent tent you will need to bring one with you. We will only allow new tents to be taken to the Venture as there will be large delays with NZ customs checking over “used” tents. You will be able to bring the tents we provide back into Australia and use them for years to come. The Contingent is offering two different tents:
