METRO MANILA YOUNG WRITERS CONFERENCE AND CONTESTS
School Year 2011-2012
Theme: “The Role of Campus Journalism in Leading the Nation to a Righteous
Path”
CONTEST MECHANICS
1. Eligible to this Regional Press Conference are Grades IV, V and VI pupils both from the
public and private elementary schools in the National Capital Region. Grade VII private
school pupils are disqualified to join the contest.
2. All contestants must be duly certified by their Schools Division Superintendents as
Division Winners in their respective contest category. Hence, a total of 1,792
contestants from the 16 schools divisions will compete in the contests.
3. A registration fee of Three Hundred Fifty Pesos (Php 350.00) shall be charged each
participant to help defray expenses for honoraria of the judges, food for the guests, use of venue, conference materials and other expenses relative to the conduct of the conference
and training of national qualifiers. Said amount is payable to the Cashier of the Division
of Mandaluyong. Deadline of payment is September 30, 2011.
4. There shall be seven (7) individual contests in English and Filipino which shall be
conducted simultaneously, except for Sports Writing/Pagsulat ng Balitang
Pampalakasan.

E. Copyreading/Headline Writing - Pagwawasto at Pag-uulo ng Balita
F. Editorial Cartooning - Kartuning G. Photojournalism/Lay outing - Pagkuha at Pag-aayos ng

Contestants in photojournalism are to use digital camera. Those whose memory cards
were found empty are disqualified to join the photo lay-out. The time limit for all categories
shall be one (1) hour only. Contest proper starts upon declaration of the judge

The contest will be in English and Filipino.
Teams shall be given one (1) hour to prepare their script for a five (5) minute
production and another one (1 hour to rehearse
After the first hour, proctors shall collect duplicate copies of the scripts for ready
screening and ranking by the judges.
The contestants will be evaluated according to the following journalistic skills:
1. Scriptwriting; 2. News casting;
3. Anchoring; and
4. Field reporting

6. Ten (10) winners shall be declared for each of the seven (7) categories in English and Filipino. However, only the top three (3) Regional Winners per category will represent
the National Capital Region during the National Schools Press Conference.
7. Illustration boards will be provided for the photojournalism contestants on the day of the contest (October 11). However, other materials (e.g. glue, paste, pentel pens, rulers etc.)
shall be provided by the participants.
8. In cartooning, contestants shall provide their own drawing instruments. Oslo paper shall
be provided by the organizers.
9. Regional and Division Supervisors are authorized to act as proctors during the contests.
They shall assign and write all the entry numbers at the end of each contest. Contestants
will not be told of the numbers assigned to their entries.
10. Only contestants and proctors are allowed to stay inside the designated contest rooms.
Should there be a special education pupil contestant, his/her assistant may be allowed to
enter the contest room.
11. Unauthorized markings on the contest piece may disqualify the entry. It is advised that
the contestants strictly follow instructions of the proctor assigned in the room.
12. Judges for the said contests are select journalists from known dailies. Their
decision will be final and unappealable.
Enclosure:
I. Conduct of the Photojournalism Contest.
A. Preparation
Standard materials required
1. Digital Camera (point and shoot only) shall be used. DSLR is not
allowed.
2. Minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 mega pixels.
3. Any storage card with camera model (compact flash, SD Card,
MMC card etc.) must be formatted/empty to be submitted to the
EED Office on September 30, not later 5:00 PM
4. Battery/ies – any that will fit the camera as prescribed
B. Actual:
1. Loading of storage card
The contestants will load the storage card in front of the
examiners/proctors.
2. Setting of date and time of camera
2.1 The contestant should set the time and date to ensure the
validity of the output.
2.2 He/she should write the time he received and returned the
memory card.
3. Shooting
3.1 The first photo shot of all contestants should be focused on
one subject as determined by the judge.
3.2 Each contestant is given one hour for photo shooting which
also includes the loading and unloading of the storage card.
3.3 The contestants are allowed only 12 shots. Deletions will
automatically disqualify the contestant.
4. Cell phones, extra digital cameras, extra storage card or any
additional materials/equipment which are not specified among
those needed are not allowed.
5. During the actual photo shooting, advisers/trainers/parents of the
contestants are not allowed to mingle with the participants.
6. After the actual shooting, contestants must surrender their cameras
with the storage device to the examiners/proctors.
7. Any violation of items 1-6 is subject for disqualification of the
contestant.
C. Lay Outing
1. The MMYWCC Secretariat shall develop the pictures (3R size and
matte) and shall prepare the ½ size illustration board and glue.
2. The layout style will be determined/announced by the
proctor/judge or the panel of judges, e.g. number of photos, with
caption, without caption, etc.
