My name is Alan. I would like to think I’m an advocate forpeople with disabilities because the Central Remedial ClinicSchool has given me the confidence to talk to people and bea positive role model for people with disabilities.

I started in the Central Remedial Clinic School when I was fouryears old. My first teacher was called Mandy. She was very niceto me. I played Joseph in the school nativity play and I made myHoly Communion and Confirmation with my class.

I have met a couple of famous people through the years. One ofthem was the Minister for Education and Skills at the time, MaryHanafin. I also met the former president of Ireland, Mary Mc Aleese.

Just because I’m a wheelchair user, it doesn’t mean I can’t takepart in activities. I like swimming and wheelchair hurling. Eventhough I can’t hold a hurl, I still participate. We won the PeterNewman hurling trophy four times.

As I moved up the school I could feel myself getting morecapable of doing more challenging work. I sat my JuniorCertificate exams and I passed with flying colours. I got twohonours, in Music and Civic, Social and Political Education. Iwas very happy with the outcome of my exams. The teachersand special needs assistants in my school are very supportive.

I know I’m in a safe environment when I’m in the CentralRemedial Clinic.

Alan

My name is Danny. I am a service user in the Training &Development Centre in Clontarf.

I have a key worker who helps me with my person centred plan(PCP). A person centred plan is a way of discovering how aperson wants to live their life and what is needed to make thatpossible.

One of my big goals was to get a job, so I did a FETAC Level 3Vocational Training Course in my centre, and then the staffhelped me to get a part- time job.

I am on the Advocacy Committee and we do advocacy trainingto help us to speak up for ourselves.

The CRC has really helped me to be more independent and tobe a more confident person so that I can make my own choicesand be in charge of my life.
