Parashara’s Light 9www.parashara.comMichiel Boender$299

It has been a long time since I reviewed Parashara’s Light, and it has become an exceptionally versatile and powerful Jyotish program for both Windows and Mac computers. Parashara’s Light now uses the Swiss Ephemeris, an enhanced time-change atlas for superb accuracy, and has many chakra charts (Kota, Sanghatta, Sudarshan, and Sarvatobhadra), the Bhrigu Point, planetary magnitude and relative speed, and the choice of my preferred ayanamsha — the True Chitra ayanamsha. For beginners, Parashara’s Light offers an amazing number of instructive tools, including a Vedic tutorial, point-and-click interpretations of any planet, sign, or house; an extensive Vedic dictionary; comprehensive descriptions of each planet, sign, lagna, navamsha, bhava, nakshatra, drekkana, tithi, yoga, karana, vaar, and varna; a listing of 1,001 yogas, just those applicable to the current chart; a horoscope interpretation report based upon any of the four included Vedic classics (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Saravali, Hora Sara, and Garga Hora); and the ability to search the classics for spe-cific words. This is a phenomenal range of resources. The program provides over 100 pre-designed screens for a variety of functions including animated transits, Muhurta, Ashtakavarga, compatibility, rectification tool, Navamsha ages, Tithi Pravesh, dasha effects, aspects on planets and houses, argas, Planetary Deities, graphic ephemeris, sunrise charts, special lagnas, natural/temporal/compound relationships, Shad and Bhava bala, multiple dasha systems, auspiciousness graph, house-cusp details, Nakshatra Spatial Matrix, Panch Pakshi, progressions, yearly transit overview, and more. Parashara’s Light has screens for Jaimini, Upagrahas, Planetary Avasthas, Krishnamurti Paddhati, and 23 different ones for Varshaphal. It is full of thoughtful touches, like the one-sheet printout showing all of the dasha and bhukti pe-riods for a person’s life; a change-location tool showing the changing sign and navamsha of the lagna as one moves the cursor over a map of the world (with a menu to choose spe-

cific cities); and a time-change toolbar to move a chart for-ward or backward in time by years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, or seconds. The research module has a simple-to-use design and many search criteria including planets, signs, houses, house lords, 1,001 yogas, and dispositors; as well as sign states (e.g., exalted), combustion, aspects, nakshatra placement, and Vargottama. You can specify up to four different search criteria and join them with and/or logic. For example, you could search for Mars conjunct the 8th lord and the 8th lord debilitated. Very powerful and effective! I was particularly impressed by the improved Jyotish cal-endar. In its monthly format, it can display ingresses into signs, nakshatras — sub and sub-sub, Navamshas, Kakshas, and degrees; Western and Vedic aspects; include outer plan-ets, house cusps, Upagrahas, and the Yogi Point; and show eclipses, the void-of-course Moon, stations, transits-to-transits, and Sadhe Sate entry and exit. You can view up to 14 dasha- system events and ten Vimshottari variations, up to five levels. You can even click on any day and see an expanded list of the day’s events. This is by far the most robust Vedic calendar in existence. Parashara’s Light is an amazing Vedic program with a truly huge number of capabilities — both for the beginner and the advanced Jyotishi. Many of its screens and functions are unique and provide great value to astrologers.

Weblog News The latest articles in my online blog at https://www.soulhealing.com/softstar.htm include my new tutorial “Inter-actions between the birth chart and other influences — Part One,” Astro Gold for the Mac and add-on reports, videos of the far side of the Moon and Jupiter’s magnetic fields, a huge number of chart images, the free program — Astrocalc 6.5, Time Zone issues in China, about Lunar Eclipses, a lovely photo of the Moon’s Phases, and more.

In BriefThe Alexandria iBase Project needs your help creating a comprehensive online catalogue and digital database of astrological materials. Alexander Boxer’s book, A Scheme of Heaven: Astrol-ogy and the Birth of Science, has gained wide acclaim in early 2020. It received media attention in many articles and reviews, and was also featured by journalist Jeff Glor on CBS This Morning: Saturday (February 29, 2020). Boxer, an American physicist and data analyst, explores astrology’s ancient timeline, from Babylonian tablets to its current use in the 21st century. His theorem is that there is a strong case that today’s knowledge systems owe a very clear debt to the rudiments of astrology. Media coverage of these ideas has been primarily positive, although some were reluctant to fully admit the credibility of this idea. Jessa Crispin writes in The Guardian (January 30, 2020) that the “current craze” driving the astrological boom is “just a new wave of self-help.” The author describes herself as a student of astrology and esotericism, and shares her ideas about the shift in value that astrology seems to be experienc-ing today. (You know … the millennial explosion.) Yet, she also argues that astrology’s current trend has absolutely noth-ing to do with real astrology. The latter, she says, is “about finding meaning in your life through story and metaphor and reflection.” (Thanks to TMA reader, Wendy Ann Wyrot, for sending along this link!)

In Memoriam Jeanne Long, a keen financial astrologer and an ele-gant woman, passed away on December 16, 2019. Two of her popular books — Basic Astro-Tec and The Universal Clock — illustrate her methods for integrating astrology and the time-and-price methods of the famous financial trader, W. D. Gann. Her publication, The Traders’ Astrological Almanac, incorporated Fibonacci numbers, astronomy, and astrology. She also had a highly successful astrological prac-tice and owned an astrological bookstore in Houston, Texas.

Active in international organizations, she was a Director for the International Society for Astrological Research (ISAR) and also served as the Financial Editor of several National Council for Geocosmic Research (NCGR) journals. She was born June 24, 1937. Robert E. Zoller, author of the Lost Key to Prediction, introducing Arabic and Medieval astrology to the Western as-trological community, died January 24, 2020 in New Paltz, New York, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Co-founder of the Mid-Hudson chapter of NCGR, he may be most widely known for his prediction concerning the events of 9/11. A 32nd degree Mason, he wrote over ten books on a variety of subjects. Additionally, he was a co-creator of Project Hindsight, with the intention of translating into English many early Greek, Arabic, and Latin language books. He was born January 25, 1947. A mainstay of the New York astrological community and NCGR — both nationally and locally — Arlene Marcia Nimark passed away on January 30, 2020. Born October 7, 1941, Arlene was a Uranian astrologer, actively working with clients beginning in the 1980s. She was one of the orga-nizers of the early United Astrology Conferences (UAC), with an expertise in organizing the trade shows that are such an integral part of a successful conference. She contributed ef-forts in this arena at conventions for over two decades. Shelley L. Ackerman, a passionate astrologer and an amazing singer and performer, was a dynamo. Born Oc-tober 14, 1953, she began her performing arts career at age 17 and was widely known in the entertainment business in New York. Her work as an astrologer incorporated an en-gaging approach to her professional presentations, and she frequently served as the Media Coordinator at astrological conferences and events. Her widely known website, Karmic Relief, was clearly an expression of her knowledge, wit, and wisdom. She also appeared on many TV and radio broad-casts. Shelley died on February 27, 2020 in Manhattan. May the spirit of what each of these lights brought to life shine eternally.
