The Bhagavad Gita in the Light of Kriya Yoga

by Paramahamsa Hariharananda

Chapter 1, Verses 41-43

Adharmābhibhavāt kṛṣṇapraduṣyanti kulastriyaḥstrīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeyajāyate varṇasamkaraḥ

Samkaro narakāyai ‘vakulaghnānām kulasya capatanti pitaro hy eṣāmluptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ

Doṣair etaiḥ kulaghnānāmvarṇasamkarakārakaiḥutsādyante jātidharmāḥkuladharmāś ca śāśvatāḥ

TranslationWith the growth of impiety, O Krishna, the members (women) of the family become cor-rupt, and with their corruption, O Varshneya (descendent of Vrishni, i.e., Krishna), there is intermixture of culture.

Intermixture of culture leads the race and the destroyers of the race to hell. Deprived of of-fering of rice balls and water, the ancestors of the race have a downfall.

The age-old traditions and family customs of

the destroyers of the race get ruined because of this intermixture created by the deeds of these destroyers.

Metaphorical InterpretationVarnashankara refers to the mixture of biologi-cal and spiritual force. When a devotee sits for meditation, he can easily withdraw his senses, come to the pituitary, and experience divine light, divine vibration, and divine sound. With the help of jyoti mudra, a Kriya Yoga technique for purifying the senses (which one should learn directly from a teacher), the devotee will perceive a brilliant, charming, and dazzling light and will reach the state of paravastha, which means mother nature. Mother nature is the real female, who leads us to merge with God. But if the devotee gets mentally upset as a result of disease or death in the family or some other calamity, he cannot stay in the supra-mental or formless state, and his mind falls back down to the biological nature. This is varnashankara, which means the admixture of opposites. Only continuous absorption in the transcendental state can give liberation. When people let their awareness slip down below the cranium they experience unpleasantness, rest-lessness, and endless desire; there is no peace, joy, and bliss.

Cosmic AstrologyPart 1 of 3: Introduction

By Silvina Pirola

Cosmovision

Cosmos is a Latin term, which in turn comes from the Greek kosmos, meaning “order.” It re-fers to the set of all created things, as an order-ly system; as opposed to the concept of chaos, meaning disorder.

The study of the cosmos is known as cosmolo-gy, and covers the knowledge of its constituent forms, substances, laws, origin and evolution of its elements. It can be approached through

different contexts or paradigms, generating particular views thereof—e.g. physical, philo-sophical, or religious. Although seemingly dif-ferent, they have in common the understand-ing of the implicit order of all created things.

A cosmic vision is one that resonates with a definite order, and which recognizes it as repli-cating in each of the planes of existence as ech-oes of an essential coherence.

The astrological cosmovision explains in par-

Page 5: CONTENTS - cdn4.elartedelapaz.orgcdn4.elartedelapaz.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Rise-and-Shine... · in the Light of Kriya Yoga. by Paramahamsa Hariharananda. ... divine vibration,

5

ticular the intrinsic order emerging from the correspondence between stars and planets, and the energy imprint received by beings, events and scenarios in a temporo-spatial co-ordinate.

It is worth mentioning that this energy imprint is a trend, strong indeed, but not a fatalistic destiny. It is said that the stars tend to, but do not oblige. Learning by resonance, the self has chosen these conditions—not to perpetuate them, but to transcend them.

The influences at the time of birth affect the self conditioned by time and space, but not the Essential Self, which is eternal and imperisha-ble. From this view, they are not constraints or obstacles, but indicators of care and attention, resource management, learning, and a particu-lar way of awakening consciousness.

The natal chart is first of all a map for awaken-ing. And when you have reached a certain de-gree of personality integration, it can be con-templated as a map of liberation.

In the words of Hypatia of Alexandria, mathe-matician and astronomer:

“To understand the things around us is the best preparation to understand the things beyond.”

Extending this reference to the astrological field, we can say that understanding of the na-tal and current influences allow us to transcend them and to prepare for the state of Divine Self, still incarnate on this plane of manifesta-tion and experimentation as a human being.

Greetings in Cosmic Attunement!

God is one. Religions are many. Almost all re-ligions are teaching that one can realize God through the five sense organs. But, wisdom and God-realization is not possible through the five sense organs.

God is all pervading. He is in the whole world. Along with this, he is abiding in the head, in the Fontanel, of every human being. There are fifty types of breath. Forty-nine types are for the material world and the extrovert. This is why all human beings can not get God-realiza-tion. Only one breath, the shortest breath, can give a human being calmness, which is Godli-ness. God is hiding in the head of every hu-man being and he’s inhaling. He’s inhaling the shortest breath. This is why you are alive. If you watch, in the Fontanel, then surely you will feel pulsation in the Fontanel. Take 4 to 5 short

breaths. Then you will hear a conch blowing sound on the top of your head. Take another 4 to 5 breaths, with the shortest breath, and watch. Keep 99% of your attention on the top of your head and search him in the Fontanel. Keep 1% of your attention on the big photo on the wall in front of you. Only see the frame of the photo. Then you will see smoky white light, fog light around the frame. Gradually the light will become milk white light. If you constantly see this, constantly watch this, then the whole room and the entire world will be lighted. You will get Samadhi. You will be liberated. It is a very simple technique. Practice it daily. Surely you will be liberated within a short period.

Keep this in a frame and read it every day when you sit for meditation. Then you will get the deepest desire which will give you liberation.

What has always given us the most satisfaction?

If we analyze a little, satisfaction comes as a re-sponse to the question, Did I do it for someone else?

Normally we do not realize consciously that true joy is found in sharing. Asking the ques-tion For who else? will always lead us to the right answer, and true joy.

Consider this example: if we work to make money, who else benefits from our efforts? Our family, our children, our parents, siblings, friends… even our pets.

It is normal for us to serve or give to others and we do it so unconsciously that we forget to re-ceive our inside reward: THE JOY OF GIVING OR SERVING.

We learned to be grateful and we were taught to give to the needy. We regularly give material things, prayers, information, etc. And in some cases we selflessly offer and sincerely give our services or skills so that someone else will re-ceive its benefits.

When we become aware that we truly serve or give to God in the form of another person, ani-mal, plant or thing, we fulfill what Krishna says

to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita 9:27: “What-ever actions you take, O son of Kunti (Arjuna), whether it be eating, or offering gifts, or prac-ticing self-discipline, consecrate them all as an offering to Me.”

This is true selfless action—doing everything with the true sense of serving, of giving, with the only aim of pleasing our God.

We are already serving God. But do we realize it? We serve God when we feed our children, when we share our food with someone else, or when we help a person cross the street. To serve and always give, is what gives meaning to our life.

However, we can serve and give to God with more awareness, spreading the message; if we do it, this service is really our best offering to our Gurus.

We can make this offering in two ways: materi-ally (money, food, materials) or through offer-ing our skills and abilities as a service. It is best when we do both at the same time.

We love it—giving and serving recharges us!

From the core of our heart we hope that the desire to give and serve the Gurus will awake in all of us, as they have given us so much every day, and keep giving and serving. By their ex-ample they are inviting us to do the same. We are being invited to exercise this same princi-ple: GIVE and SERVE.

Gurus give and serve us all the time. Let us do the same. It will open an unknown world to us, because we will do everything without expect-ing anything in return.

Let us practice what a Realized Master does all the time. To GIVE and SERVE quickly bring us closer to this ultimate goal of Self-realization.

Adi Shankaracharya’s Guru Paduka Stotram describes the blessings of having a guru. The Guru Gita (verse 17) aptly describes the guru as “dispeller of darkness” (from gu, “darkness” and ru, “that which dispels”).

“The blind cannot lead the blind; only a master, one who knows God, may rightly teach others about Him. To regain one’s divinity one must have such a master or guru. He who faithfully follows a true guru becomes like him, for the guru helps to elevate the disciple to his own level of realization.”

Once upon the time, there was a king who of-fered a big reward to the artist who could cap-ture perfect peace in a painting. Many artists tried. The king observed and admired all the paintings, but there were only two of them that he really liked and he had to choose be-tween them.

The first one depicted a very calm lake. This lake was a perfect mirror in which some surround-ing placid mountains were reflected. Above the mountains was a blue sky with tenuous white clouds. All of those who looked at this painting thought that it reflected perfect peace.

The second painting also had mountains, but these were scraggy and bare. Above them there was a furious sky from which an impet-uous storm with lightning and thunderstorms was falling. Foamy, torrential waters were rushing wildly at the foot of the mountain. None of this was revealing anything peaceful at all. But when the king observed carefully, he

saw behind the cascade a delicate shrub that was growing in the crack of a rock. In this shrub there was a nest. Right there in the middle of the roaring, violent waterfalls a small bird was sitting calmly in his nest.

Perfect peace? Which painting do you think was the winner?

The king selected the second one. Do you know why? “Because” the king explained, “peace does not mean to be in a place without noise, without problems, without hard work, or with-out pain. Peace means that although we may be in the middle of very difficult situations, we can remain calm within our heart. This is the real meaning of peace.”

Commentary

This is what Kriya Yoga can bring to you. It is not going to magically solve all of life’s problems. It will instead open the door of your heart so that God can come into your life. Like this little

Perfect Peace Starts WithinBy Yogi Sarveshwarananda Giri

bird, you will be happy, at peace in your little nest, no matter what happens around you. And when you operate from that place of unshaka-ble joy and calmness within you, you become a much better person. You will be able to help others who are in trouble with their desires, their fears and their addictions.

This is your divine duty. God has given you a mission; it is not by accident that you received initiation into Kriya Yoga or that you are now reading this magazine. God has appointed you to re-discover this kingdom of inner peace. Transform yourself internally, then you will be able to help others. Peace starts with one per-son, and it is highly contagious. Violence is also contagious, but peace is much more powerful and durable than violence.

One example: Mahatma Gandhi. He was a very frail, skinny little man. He did not have any pos-session, or weapons, or armies, or wealth. He had only his faith in God and his immense calm-ness. And he liberated almost a billion people from 350 years of exploitation and oppression by the British Empire. Without violence, with-out weapons—only with love. This takes great courage. It is easy to hide behind a weapon. But to come in front of the brutes of the world, wearing only your heart – that takes real cour-age.

He also practiced Kriya Yoga, having received initiation from Paramahamsa Yogananda.

This is the power of love, the mastery of inner peace. It is available to anybody who sincerely seeks it.

Strive to better yourself, all the time. You owe it to yourself. You owe it to the world. You owe it to God.

A group of Pastors had assembled to discuss some difficult matters such as how to obey the mandate, “Pray without ceasing.” One of them was elected to write an essay to be read at the next monthly meeting.

A small servant girl who heard this said, “Why are they going to wait an entire month to ex-plain what the text means if it’s one of the eas-iest and best in the Bible?”

A pastor asked, “Can you pray all the time when you have so many things to do all day long?”

“Yes, yes Sir, the more things I have to do, the more I can pray,” answered the girl.

“Tell us how you can do this,” said the pastor.

Said the girl: “When I open my eyes in the morning, I pray, ‘Lord, open the eyes of my

understanding.’ While I’m dressing, I pray to be dressed with the cloak of justice. While I’m washing up, I pray to be washed through regeneration. When I work I pray to have the strength to get out of difficulties during the day. When I light the fire I pray that the work of God be revived in my soul. When I sweep the house, I pray that my heart be cleaned of all its impurities. When I prepare and eat breakfast, I pray to be nourished with the pure spiritual food and milk of the word. While I’m taking care of the children, I look at God as my Fa-ther and I pray, through the spirit of adoption, that I may be His child. And thus throughout the day every thing I do gives me a thought for a prayer”

A Sai Baba devotee meets with Paramahamsa Hariharananda for initiation at the Karar Ashram in Puri, India – March 1989.

“I answered, truthfully, that I understood Kriya to be a scientific and universal technique and a shortcut to a higher dimension of consciousness, which I wanted to reach. I added that, as such, I did not see any difficulty combining Kriya with bhakti (devotion) to my own master, Sri Sathya Sai Baba.”

The article below is an excerpt taken from the devotees book, “Glimpses of the Divine: Working with the Teachings of Sai Baba” by Birgitte Rod-riguez, published by Samuel Weiser, Inc. Repro-duced by permission from the publisher.

I decided to make Puri, the famous place of pil-grimage, my destination once again. Each day hundreds of pilgrims visit its famous Lord Ja-gannath Temple. At festival times the numbers swell to thousands. But my trip this time was to visit the small, but beautiful Karar Ashram. It is one of the focal points in the world for the study of Kriya Yoga, although only monks are permitted to live there. Kriya promises much and its devotees say, “By the practice of Kriya you attain God realization, which is Self-reali-zation, at rocket speed.” I had asked for, and received Baba’s blessings before I began my journey, and I half expected to return to him as an enlightened person.

14

I wanted to learn the Kriya yoga exercises from Swami Hariharananda Giri himself. At that time he presided over the ashram, although he usually only spent a couple of weeks a year there. He usually spent a good deal of his time in America and as much as nine months a year traveled in other foreign countries. As Swami Hariharananda said, “These countries have everything except peace. The people are in frustration, sorrow, and trouble.” Slowly he was helping them to “get calmness, which is Godli-ness.”

Swami Hariha-rananda Giri usu-ally returned to Puri each year on the founder day of the Karar Ashram (March 22), and thus this particular year (1989), he ar-rived in mid-March from New York via Calcutta by the Ja-gannath Express to Puri.

The ashram was founded by Swami Shriyukteshwar Giri, the guru of Paramahansa Yogananda who wrote the famous book, The Autobiography of a Yogi. Swami Hariharananda is considered to be the greatest living master-saint of the scientific technique of Kriya Yoga, and occupies a high rank among the Indian yogis of this century.

Shortly after his arrival, he gave darshan to the many people waiting for him at the ashram, and afterward some were invited to his room. I was fortunate enough to be among them,

and it was, in itself, a great experience to sit in the presence of this saint. He exchanged a few words with many of the group. To me he said, “You ought to feel transformation by seeing me.” And indeed I did. My whole being was en-veloped in a soothing peace. I told Swami Har-iharananda that I was a devotee of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. In the meditation hall at the Karar Ashram are pictures of Sai Baba, Shirdi Baba, Sri Aurobindo, and the Mother.

Suddenly a young man entered Swa-mi Hariharanan-da’s room, made his way quickly through all of us who were sitting cross-legged on the carpeted floor, and went straight up to the saint and knelt in front of him. The Swa-mi embraced him warmly several times, apparently very happy to see him. After about half-an-hour Swa-mi Hariharananda

indicated that he wished people to leave the room so that he could rest after his long jour-ney.

It is not possible to stay at the Karar ashram, so I checked into one of the many beachside hotels along the coast, many of which are rea-sonably priced. My small hotel was situated almost on the beach itself, and I was able to swim in the ocean several times a day.

During his short stay, Swami Hariharananda

Page 15: CONTENTS - cdn4.elartedelapaz.orgcdn4.elartedelapaz.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Rise-and-Shine... · in the Light of Kriya Yoga. by Paramahamsa Hariharananda. ... divine vibration,

15

seemed very busy and allowed himself very lit-tle time for rest. I marveled at how someone well over 80 could sustain all the activity. More and more people arrived every day, many from foreign countries, until there were at least six to seven hundred devotees who were present to receive his blessings.

About two hundred were initiated in Kriya Yoga by the Swami. For everyone else it seemed a very hard program, but he remained peaceful and calm, the very embodiment of the Kriya he was teaching. I noticed that often in the ashram’s big hall he asked devotees not to do padnam-askar as he left. “Don’t bow, don’t bow,” he said re-peatedly.

After a few days he sent for me. A meeting had been arranged for 11 :00 a.m. of the ap-pointed day, but I experienced great difficulty reaching the ashram. Unknown to me, that particular day was a festival day called “Holi” during which children and young people are permitted to spray or smear colored dyes on all and sundry. I left my hotel with time to spare and dressed in good clothes, but being a foreigner with a pale skin, I was soon a favorite target. Before I was halfway to the ashram, my face was green and the rest of me was the colors of the rainbow. I felt I couldn’t appear before the Swami looking like that and hurried

back to my hotel to wash and change. For my second attempt I wore a rain coat and wrapped my face in a towel!

I finally reached the ashram and a secretary showed me into Swami Hariharananda’s room. As I entered, my eyes went immediately to his silent figure sitting in an unassuming position on a cot covered with an orange cloth. There was no one else in the room. I went to where he was sitting and knelt down in front of him.

There was no small talk or exchange of social niceties. His first, very direct question was, “Why have you come?” I answered, truthful-ly, that I understood Kriya to be a scien-tific and universal technique and a short cut to a higher dimension of con-sciousness, which I wanted to reach. I added that, as such, I did not see any dif-ficulty combining Kriya with bhakti (devotion) to my

own master, Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Swami Hariharananda did not reply to this. Without further questions he rose and bolted the door from the inside to ensure there were no interruptions, then sat down on the floor next to me. “Give me a shirt,” he asked. I rose and attempted to hand him one of the shirts hanging on a string in the spartan and simple room. But the shirt I selected had long sleeves and he said, “No, not that one.” Instead I hand-

Page 16: CONTENTS - cdn4.elartedelapaz.orgcdn4.elartedelapaz.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Rise-and-Shine... · in the Light of Kriya Yoga. by Paramahamsa Hariharananda. ... divine vibration,

16

ed him a short-sleeved shirt, which he pulled over his head with the simplicity of a child. All the while his whole attitude reflected the com-mand of a yogi who is above it all. I sat down again next to him on the floor, feeling quite re-laxed and almost at home in his room.

Swami Hariharananda then said, “I will perform a purification of your body,” With his hand he touched the different chakras in my spine, one by one. He then held my hands firmly in his hands. He even held my feet in his hands. Then he used one hand to stroke my face, arms, and back, all the while repeat-ing Vedic mantras in San-skrit. In English he said, “I am infusing my life force in you.”

During this purification process I saw a dazzling white light in the position of the so-called “third eye” between the eye-brows. According to Swa-mi Hariharananda, that white light is the light of the soul. I also clear-ly heard the cosmic OM sound that underlies cre-ation. Finally he put his hand on my head and blessed me, and I bent down and touched his feet.

It was such an overwhelming experience that I had difficulty holding back the tears that had started to form under my closed eyelids. It had all taken place in five minutes and throughout I had invoked Baba as Ista (God). Almost im-mediately I experienced an extreme calmness

that remained with me for the rest of that day. It was so great that it was impossible to come down to that plane where we make ordinary conversation, The “I” and the “me” had disap-peared. I observed silence for the rest of the day, letting the blessed peace envelope my whole being. It felt as if I were staying at the center of my being. The aim of Kriya Yoga, and indeed all yoga, is to go into that center and remain there and realize the Self.

Paramahamsa Hariharananda wants you to find “the real chamber of your being and to enjoy the world like a king, not like a beggar.” He says, “The helplessness in you, which has made you a beggar, disappears and you find an unshakable shelter in your own Self.” Here are a few examples of his teachings:

Love bears.Love tolerates.Love is not resentful.Love requires patience.Love gives oneness.Love is kind.Love is sweet.Love is God, without God there is no love.

So long as you have not cleaned your heart nice-

ly, you cannot do anything nicely. You cannot love. So you are to clean your heart and to clean your mind.

Heaven and hell are within you. Verbally you are very sweet, but inwardly bitter, sugarcoat-ed quinine. But remember, you are the power

Page 17: CONTENTS - cdn4.elartedelapaz.orgcdn4.elartedelapaz.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Rise-and-Shine... · in the Light of Kriya Yoga. by Paramahamsa Hariharananda. ... divine vibration,

17

of God.

Meditate. Watch day and night. Constant alert-ness in every step of your life is necessary. Then you will have quickest result.

Make your life a divine life, not a devil’s life. If you have anger, pride, ego and hatred, then eradicate all these devil’s qualities.

You are the power of God. Feel it in your prac-tical life. Perceive the Ultimate Truth. Be calm and be divine. Get up from your body sense and worldly sense. You need culture. If you want to meditate, you are to go beyond mind, thought, intellect, restlessness, anger, etc.

God wants that you should transform yourself. God is giving you constant blows for your cor-rection. But you are not following Him.

Meditation is the way to self-discovery. To know truth we have to go deeper. There is only one method of acquiring knowledge. From the ordinary person to the highest yogi—all have to use the same method, and that method is concentration. This is the knock that opens the gates of nature and lets out floods of light. Concentration is the only key to the treasure of knowledge. The power of the human mind is unlimited. The secret of the world is ours, if we know how to knock, how to give the necessary blow. The strength and force of the blow come through concentration.

By remaining in the superconscious state, a yogi gets extreme love, regard and indebted-ness to God. This love for God is very rare.

However insignificant a thing may be, it is He. But if you do not meditate very deeply, you can not perceive this truth.

Those who have penetrated into the veils of nature’s creation, those who have realized the

truth of all religions, those who are free from anger, emotion, hallucination, speculation are the real teachers.

Returning to Sai Baba’s ashram at Puttaparthi, I felt that this experience had deepened my love for Baba and that through it I had come closer to him and learned that in the world of today his divinity is unparalleled.

Oh, precious Lord of my heart.

You made me see my soul in all its glory.

You made me bear the cosmic sound of OM from deep within.

You are Ista, indeed one with all creation.

A thousand times I bow down to Thee.

It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
