Hidden Hunger From Assessment to Solutions The International Congress Hidden Hunger has three objectives: 1.) to create awareness of the global problem of Hidden Hunger, 2.) to get scientific issues on the agenda of policy makers, academicians, politicians and industry, as well as 3.) to discuss solutions to address the worldwide micronutrient deficiencies. Scientists from different areas, field workers, members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and representatives from administration, management and policy will be invited to discuss the different topics for four days at the University of Hohenheim located in Stuttgart-Plieningen, Germany. Attention will be given to Africa and Asia as well as North America and Europe. Hidden Hunger is an increasing problem even in the developed countries, whose potential negative consequences on long-term health are often overlooked and underestimated. Hidden Hunger From Assessment to Solutions

The International Congress Hidden Hunger has three objectives:

1.) to create awareness of the global problem of Hidden Hunger, 2.) to get scientific issues on the agenda of policy makers, academicians, politicians and industry, as well as 3.) to discuss solutions to address the worldwide micronutrient deficiencies.

Session 3: Biofuel N.N. Further lectures will present data related to the different sources of biofuel as well as its impact on food security and Hidden Hunger.

Session 1: Hidden Hunger in European Children – What Is The Evidence? Berthold Koletzko / Dr. v. Haunersches Kinderspital, University Medical Center, Munich, Germany Further lectures will deal with the specific problem of nutrition in early childhood, e.g. direct nutrition interventions and consequences of deficiencies in developed countries. One further session will address the importance of the 1000-day window to later development and productivity.

Session 1: Challenges facing the Global Food System (incl. aspects related to developed countries) Charles Godfray / University of Oxford, Department of Zoology, Oxford, UK Further lectures will highlight different aspects as to the Global Food System and ways to combat Hidden Hunger.

Session 2: Agriculture-Nutrition Linkages and the Potential Role of Biofortification Matin Qaim / Georg-August-Universität, Göttingen, Germany Further lectures will present different crops and their usefulness for biofortification.

Session 3: History and Future of Golden Rice, GMO Ingo Potrykus / Magden, Switzerland Further lectures will deal with different approaches to produce GMO as well as their acceptance and effectiveness with respect to Hidden Hunger.

Session 4: Biofortification, Biodiversity and Diet: A Search for Complementary Applications against Poverty and Malnutrition Timothy Johns / McGill University, Quebec, Canada Further lectures will present further aspects regarding the potentiality of biofortification and biodiversity including subsistence farming and related approaches.

Session 5: Household Level: Do Multiple Interventions improve Health and Nutrition Outcome at the Family Level? Ruth Oniang’o / KARI-NARL-Complex, Nairobi, Kenia Further lectures will show potential interventions in different regions worldwide.

Session 6: Policy Joachim von Braun / ZEF, Bonn, Germany Further lectures will deal with the impact of policies and governmental approches. *********************************************************************** TOPIC 7 PRESENTATION OF PROJECTS AND POSTER SESSION

Session 1: Distribution of Global Micronutrient Deficiencies Patrick Webb / Tufts University, Boston, USA Further lectures will deal with micronutrient deficiencies occuring in different regions worldwide.

Session 2: Single Micronutrients: Vitamin A Keith West / School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA Further lectures will deal with selected micronutrients, e.g. iron, zinc, iodine, vitamin D, and folate.

Session 3: Hidden Hunger in Developed Countries – Is there any Concern?
