A4THE GADSDEN COUNTY TIMES • THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2014 WWW.GADCOTIMES.COM

Istepped out myfront door into thelast lingering mo-

ments of evening, whenI was nearly startled bya cheerful, “Goodmorning, neighbor,”from an unknown,y o u t h f u l - s o u n d i n gwoman in the area ofthe house next door.

I somehow returnedwith an immediate,“good morning,” my-self, although I wasstill a little befuddledby such a rare occur-rence as a pleasantgreeting sounded outin the very early morn-ing.

The young lady whohad greeted me wasprobably one of the twonieces of my next doorneighbors.

The sisters weredown from Canada tovisit their mom anddad who are stayingwith my neighbor, Billand his wife, Nicole, while their parent’snew winter home isbeing built.

Something as simpleas that mere greetingwas enough to helpmake the start of myday, or, perhaps, yours,in a similar situation, apleasant one.

I had never met ei-ther of the girls, in fact,I have never seenthem. However, thatcheerful “good morn-ing” from one of themwas so welcomed andappreciated.

When’s the last timeyou were greeted by acheerful early morning“hello”?

Better yet, when wasthe last time yougreeted someone witha few happy words?

Perhaps, by nature, you are a pleasant per-son, and it is only natu-

ral for you to extendkind words to another.

Greeting otherscomes naturally to me,most of the time. Atothers, I have to re-mind myself to bepleasant.

I try to rememberthat as a friendly, andwilling to please oth-ers, person, it is I whoshould take the initia-tive to greet anotherupon encounteringsomeone on the street. As Christians, it is ourresponsibility to initi-ate a kind word or toextend kindness to an-other, especially to astranger.

In my new neighbor-hood, here at theLegacy, over-55 com-munity, in Leesburg, when I encounter peo-ple while on my earlymorning walks or bikerides, I am impressedby the friendly greet-ings I receive eachmorning. Oftentimes, Iam not the first togreet.

It is that time of theyear when the snow-birds from the Northhave invaded. I’msorry; they have everyreason to be here, es-pecially with the horri-ble weather they’vehad to endure in thosenorthern states andCanada, but I do feellike those of us wholive here all year longhave been invaded, al-though, a friendly inva-sion.

Most of the snow-birds I’ve met arefriendly folk downhere for a few monthsto enjoy our lovelyFlorida sunshine andhave the rights andprivileges that we whoreside here all yearhave.

I found myself caughtin some real bad traffica few days ago. I didn’tthink I’d be able todrive my way out ofLeesburg; there wereso many cars on theroad.

It was like living inthe nearly desertedtown that I do, one day,and waking the nextmorning to find myselfdriving in New YorkCity. From drivingwhile relaxed one day,to having the car be-hind you riding yourbutt, the next, has beenunnerving for me. It isjust so sudden!

I shared with Judythat I don’t know if Ican survive six monthsof snowbirds. Take meback to Tallahassee!

My friend, Mulder, knows what I’m talkingabout, as he sharedwith me recently thathe couldn’t live downhere because of theradical change in lifestyles that six monthscan bring.

Our friends andneighbors next door, Aland Shirley, have beenso good to Judy and meand are helping us tolearn how to live andcope in our suddenlyand radically changed, once quiet, village, until we get used to liv-ing at this much fastertempo for the next fourmonths or so.

Shirley is 78, and Alis 87, and they drivearound like people halftheir age. No snowbirdis going to impinge ontheir lifestyle!

We just have to go onappreciating the sim-ple acts of kindnessthat we all have storedup in us somewhereand be willing to ex-tend them to anyone

we happen to meet, from wherever, alongour daily journeythrough life.

And, if you’re one ofthose reluctant to ex-tend a greeting for fearof the greeting notbeing returned, lightenup, and initiate afriendly “hello” andflash that becomingsmile of yours.

As you know, in thesetimes, many you meetin the course of a dayhave little time or in-terest to be wasting itwith exchanging mean-ingless, silly greetingsor acts of kindness, asthey have more impor-tant things on theirminds and agendas.

I’m not surprised, al-though a little disap-pointed, whenever Igreet someone and thegreeting is not re-turned without even anod. I just have to becontent that myfriendly gesture iswhat I believe is theright thing to do intoday’s cruel world andthat some I encounterin my daily walkthrough life truly dohave the weight of theworld on their shoul-ders and have no de-sire or are unable toreturn a simple act ofkindness.

God bless you.

Editor’s note: This column ap-peared last year in The GadsdenCounty Times in honor of the MartinLuther King Jr. Holiday and theTimes is pleased to reprint it thisyear.

It was late August, 1963. I was 12. Iremember my father calling meinto his room. The radio was on,

and I heard cheering. It was not abaseball game kind of cheer — itseemed louder and longer. It was asustained roar.

My dad, age 72 and blind, pointed inthe direction of the radio with onehand, and put his other index fingerto his lips — he was telling me to be quiet — andto listen.

Next I heard the voice. A combination ofspeech and chanting. The cadence was like noneI ever heard. The word music rose and fell, thepower was like a wave — swelling and then rest-ing, soon to rise again.

My father’s blind eyes were shining in the win-dow light. He was tearful, his lips pursed, hishead gently nodding in agreement, timed to themelody of the voice. Seeing my father so movedgave me a sense that history was being made.

There, in that sun-bathed room, I was capturedby the sound of that voice, and felt the power ofits persuasion. I never saw my father so attentive. All of his energy focused on listening to thewords.

“I have a dream that one day my four little chil-dren will live in a nation where they will not bejudged by the color of their skin, but by the con-tent of their character.

“And so even though we face the difficulties oftoday and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is adream deeply rooted in the American dream. Ihave a dream that one day this nation will riseup and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘Wehold these truths to be self-evident, that all menare created equal.’”

Dr. King’s monumental speech commanded theattention of not only the half-million who gath-ered in view of Abraham Lincoln’s statue on theWashington Mall, but touched the hearts and in-fluenced the minds of a nation to pay attentionand take action.

That speech on that sweltering August day ig-nited a charge of energy that would not bestopped — not by gushing fire hoses, snarlingdogs, enraged threats, church bombs or snipers’bullets. At the tender age of 35, that eloquentpreacher from Atlanta set in motion a flood of in-dividual and collective actions which wouldchange how people viewed not only our neigh-bors, but ourselves.

The impact of that leader’s courage was felt inthat tumultuous decade of the 1960’s, and for gen-erations to come.

The ideals of Dr. King’s mission were rooted inhis Christian faith; his principles and civil dis-obedience techniques were borrowed from

Gandhi. But no matter our faith, race, ethnicity, gender or age, the heroic vi-sion and oratorical brilliance of Dr.King is a beacon for us all.

In the 11-year period between 1957and 1968, King traveled more than ahalf-million miles and spoke morethan 2,500 times, appearing whereverthere was injustice to be protestedand action to be taken.

At age 36, he was the youngest per-son to be awarded the Nobel Prize forPeace. Although his life was cut shortat age 39 by an assassin’s bullet inApril 1968, Dr. King’s legacy lives inanyone who chooses to questionthose who would hold us captive to

old ideas and discriminatory policies. While Dr. King was by no means a perfect per-

son in all of his personal behaviors (who amongus is?), the courage and commitment of this oneman has left a legacy which I believe should betaught to our young and admired for the lastingimpact he created.

Has all that Dr. King envisioned come to pass? Not yet. Has his legacy brought forth a tremen-dous surge of change in attitude, law, and eco-nomic opportunity? Yes.

But there’s so much still to be accomplished.Justice is not static; it’s active and must be ac-tively asserted and strictly guarded every day.The fight for freedom has no limitations as longas the struggle for justice continues. Every gen-eration has its opportunity and obligation to rec-ognize problems and create solutions.

If you wish to hear and/or read the entire textof the “I Have a Dream” speech, visithttp://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlk-ihaveadream.htm/.

I also recommend reading Dr. King’s Letterfrom a Birmingham Jail, written in April 1963 tohis fellow pastors in which he reminds them thateverything Adolph Hitler did in Nazi Germanywas “legal” and all actions by German citizens toaid or comfort their Jewish neighbors were “ille-gal.” Practicing peaceful disobedience to unjustlaws takes courage and the willingness to with-stand criticism — and rarely comes without cost.

This poignant document of American historicalsignificance calls to question the differences be-tween right and wrong, justice and oppression. Itis available at http://www.africa.upenn.edu/Arti-cles_Gen/Letter_Birmingham.html/.

In memory and in tribute to those whomarched, fought and sacrificed for the rights wehold dear, being responsible citizens is one of ourhighest callings. Please remember, too, that ourarmed forces are ambassadors for our freedoms. You may disagree with policy decisions that putour fighting forces in harm’s way but they andtheir families deserve our respect and supportduring their service and if they survive, upontheir return home.

I believe we owe every public official, at every

Letters to the editor

I am calling for our citizens to be moreinvolved in who is running our city andwho has our interests at the focal pointrather than their greedy grabs for fameand fortune. It bothers me that our coun-cil grabs the first thing that comes alongpromising to do miracles. They don’tcheck, take someone word. They are vul-nerable, naive and gullible (one or all ofthe above).

When you vote in 2015, be sure theones on the ballot are qualified and arethere to serve you instead of themselves.Council members in City Hall are usu-ally selected to serve whims and desiresof marionettes who pull the cord andtheir subjects do their bidding and carryout theirs wishes.

Your probable candidates for 2015 dis-tricts: 1- Mr. Charlie Smith, 3- Ms. DelorisMadison, 5- Mrs. Pamela Mann, 7- Mrs.Alean Robinson. If these council mem-bers do not meet your needs, you havetime to see if you can replace them in-stead of electing them and later trying tohave a recall, which almost never suc-ceeds. I am doing that, letting the unin-formed citizens on what is going on.

We have positions shown on organiza-tion chart, but I have asked many times, who has the titles, not a straight answeryet. I still want the answers /explana-tions. In the past certain council mem-bers contacted me on a regular basisnow they change cell numbers and or ig-nore when my number shows up on theirID’s.

I had 14 years of hard labor while onthe council. Ms. Pat Manor was City Man-ager at that time, Mr. Colston was mayor.I have the newspaper clipping with himon the front page. It had the caption, “The election everyone forgot”. Washing-ton: Republicans & Democrats- de-scribes all of the years of my struggle atCity Hall. The year 2007 and May 5, 2011were the time that highlighted the re-sentment and hostility I endured.

Midway’s government will never getfixed until some better hearts and Chris-tians values and applications are cre-ated and employed. It will be a miraclethat I would like to see.

After a three-weekbreak for the Christ-mas holidays, theRobert F. MunroeBoys Basketball teamhit the court this pastMonday, beginningthe second half of theseason with threegames against District1-2A foe FAMU HighSchool (Tuesday onthe road and Friday athome) and LibertyCounty (in Bristol). The Bobcats, who arewinless thus far forthe season, got off to aslow start against theBaby Rattlers, leadingthe District at 5-0, be-fore falling by thescore of 86-24. FAMUwas able to force

many turnovers with ahalf-court trap that re-sulted in run-outs.The Bobcats were ledin scoring by JalynLewis with 16 points.

W e d n e s d a y ’ smatch-up with borderrival Liberty Countydidn’t turn out muchbetter for the Bobcatsas they surrendered32 first-quarter pointsto the hosts beforefalling 66-30. TheBulldogs cruised tothe win and the Bob-cats were left wonder-ing yet again.

“Probably our mostdisappointing per-formance to date,”said Bobcat CoachJoey Birdsong. “Wewere competitive withthis team the firsttime we faced them, and we were ex-

tremely flat this time. Our defense was with-out the energy weneeded, and we had20-plus turnovers. It’shard to be competi-tive like that.”

Friday night cameand ended with an-other loss, again atthe hands of FAMU91-43. “We actuallyplayed much better, despite the score,”said Birdsong. “Wejumped out to a quick6-0 lead and held ourown for the first half.FAMU is probably thebest team we play, andtheir superior sizeand skill eventuallyallowed them to pullaway. Our energy wasmuch better. One statthat I’m proud of isthat we only had 12turnovers. This is

something we’vestressed and workedon, and I hope it issinking in.”

The Bobcats’ topscorers were JalynLewis with 27 and WillHarris with nine.Lewis, Sean Newton,Max Baroody, andCole Skipper collectedfour rebounds each.

The Bobcats’ sea-son continues withthree more conteststhis week, startingTuesday with a homegame against PoplarSprings (7:30 p.m.),Thursday on the roadat Maclay (7 p.m.), andthen a Friday match-up with District rivalAucilla Christian (7:30p.m.). Friday’s gamealso marks the crown-ing of Miss Munroe athalftime.

EAST GADSDENProving there’s no “I” in teamwork, the

East Gadsden Jaguar girls’ basketball team gotdouble-figures work out of four players to de-feat Leon High School 52-45.

The Jaguars jumped out 20-15 in the firstquarter and used that lead to finish off the win. They led 24-22 at the half. Sharieka Gaymonscored 12, Jamiya Bittle and Dondrea Harris 11each, and DeAmbrenque Davis 10 points toround out the scoring.

MUNROEOn Tuesday night, FAMU scored an as-

tounding 40 points in the first quarter and 30points in the second quarter to lead 70-12 at thehalf. They dominated from start to finish andwon 106-21.

For Munroe, Maddey Pappadakis madetwo three-pointers and led in scoring with 8points.

On Friday night, the Lady Cats faced theRattlers again, eventually succumbing to thetenacious, full-court press of FAMU. They did, however, handle it better Friday night and evenscored several baskets off their press-break.FAMU led 26-12 at the end of the first quarter, which was quite different from the 40-6 first-quarter score from Tuesday night’s matchup. The final score was Rattlers 74, Munroe 21 andFAMU went on to a second win of the weekover district opponent Munroe.

Although six Munroe players scored in theloss, no one scored more than six points. Kar-leebeth Perkins and Mary Pat Thomas eachpulled down a hard-earned seven reboundsapiece.

Munroe dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-2 intheir Class 2A district.

CHISOLMTimes Sports

CorrespondentThis past Saturday

night in Greensborothe Panthers joggedonto their home courtand squared offagainst the Lions ofLeon High. Bothteams came out play-ing at a fast, aggres-sive pace thatimmediately excitedthe crowd. Leonscored the first pointsof the game by knock-ing down a three-pointer with 7:39remaining in the firstquarter. Less than aminute later, WestGadsden took a 4-3lead after receivingback-to-back lay-upsfrom Mark Bradwelland Andrew Reddick.

The Lions roaredback and regained an11-8 advantage with2:30 remaining in theopening quarter. ThePanther’s sharp-shooter LajarousDavis hit two shots

from beyond the archat the end of the pe-riod, which gave thehome team a small 14-13 lead as the firstquarter came to aclose. The openingquarter was an excit-ing back-and-forthbattle that engagedthe crowd and causedthem to eagerly sitand wait for the startof the next quarter.

The second quarterwas a total contradic-tion of the first. TheLions came out andtotally dominated thePanthers during thesecond period of thefirst half; 12 secondsinto the quarter aLeon player got a nicefloater to fall, whichput them ahead by ascore of 15-14. WestGadsden turned theball over on their nextpossession and con-tinued to commit mis-takes throughout theremainder of the half.Leon did a great job ofplaying a tenaciouspress defense that

produced severalsteals that they turnedinto points on theother end of the floor.

A three-pointer bythe visiting team with5:10 left in the secondextended their lead to26-16. The Panther’soffensive strugglescontinued and with 10seconds left in thehalf Leon had tight-ened its grip on thegame and held a 40-23advantage headinginto halftime.

The third quarterwas a duplicate of thesecond as Leon con-tinued to impose itswill on the Panthers. After a successful tripto the free-throw linewith 6:10 remaining inthe quarter, the Lionsdoubled the pointtotal of the Panthersby a score of 46-23.The second half of thethird quarter washighlighted with sev-eral dunks by theLions, and as thequarter came to aclose the visitors

made three consecu-tive three-pointers,which pushed theirlead to 63-34.

Leon built onto itsmomentum in the fi-nally period of play. The Lions got severalgood looks from beyondthe arch and mademost of them. The Pan-thers’ frustrations con-tinued in the finalquarter as they wereoutscored 24-16 in theperiod. The Lionsscored the last basketof the game on a lay-upas they went on to winby a score of 87-50.

After their toughloss the Panther’sHead Coach AndrewMoten said, “I’ve gotto give Leon credit;they played like menand we didn’t. Theyplayed aggressive bas-ketball. Our guys havegot to step up we did-n’t meet the chal-lenge. We’ve got to getmore physical. We’llgo back to the drawingboard and get thingscorrected.”

Of toenails and helicoptersNot to get

all TMI( “ t o o

much informa-tion”) on you,but I have thisblack spot onmy toenail.

When I firstnoticed it, myo v e r - a c t i v e ,ultra-melodra-matic imagina-tion decided itwas melanoma, and Ionly had three weeks tolive.

It turned out to beblood underneath thenail from the time Idropped something onit. The doctor diagnosedit as an “owie” and saidit would take a long timefor it to go away, that the

spot wouldgrow out as thenail grows.

When I gothome from thedoctor’s Ibegan watch-ing it to see if Icould detectprogress.

Have youever watchedyour toenailsgrow? If not,

it’s quite boring. It’s likewatching snails race insuper slo-mo.

Eventually, I lost in-terest in the progress ofthe black spot on my toe-nail — until recently. It’smoved!

Now, instead of thespot being down by thecuticle, it’s moved up a

few centimeters.However, as fascinat-

ing as that may be, Idon’t really want to talkabout my toenail. I re-ally want to talk aboutmy recovery process formy chronic controlfreakism and helicopterparentism disorder.

Frankly, it’s been apainfully slow recovery, probably because mycase is so severe. On ascale of one to 10, I wasdiagnosed as a 47.

Let me tell you, anymom who tries to top mein the helicopter parent-ing game (so named forparents who hover) isn’teven playing in myleague.

When my now-30-year-old daughter moved 500

miles away to Charlotte,N.C., 10 years ago, I re-attached her umbilicalcord and tried my hard-est to control her everywaking moment throughmental telepathy andemail.

One time shortly aftershe moved, she and herroommate decided todrive to Atlanta for aconcert.

In my opinion, no oneshould ever drive to At-lanta because, as every-one knows, everyonewho ever drives to At-lanta never makes it outalive. (True fact.)

So, I gave the umbili-cal cord a yank andfired off an email ser-monette about the perilsof the road and the

virtues of staying homeand saving her moneyand not putting herselfin danger, physically orspiritually.

I remember asking,“Do you have a plan?Have you thought aboutwhat you would do ifyou got into an acci-dent?” Yada, yada, yada.

She replied, “I’m not12 and I don’t appreci-ate you treating me likeI am. Leave me alone.”

Obviously, she made itback to Charlotte safely, but that’s only because Istayed vigilant for 72hours straight, prayingand crying and flyingaround in my helicopter.

That’s just one of thedocumented 53,024 ex-amples of my trying to

be in control. At the time, I knew I

was being a fruitcakeand that I was wrong, but I couldn’t not do it.To let go of my imaginedcontrol meant trustingGod, which I trulywanted to do, but only intheory, not in practice.

Too risky. He mightfail me.

Fast-forward 10 years.Somewhere, somehow, sometime during thepast decade I begantrusting God just a tad, maybe even more than atad. It hasn’t happenedall at once, but slowly.I’m gradually makingprogress.

I’ve always known that

my need for control isbased in fear, and thatfear stems from notbeing confident that Iam loved by God. Thinkabout it: You’re neverafraid of someone youknow loves you, right?

“There is no fear inlove,” the Bible says.“But perfect love drivesout fear, because fearhas to do with punish-ment” (1 John 4:18).

Therefore, if Jesushas taken my punish-ment with his death onthe cross, all that’s leftis love. So, as I rest inGod’s love for me, aswell as for my children, the fear and the needfor control subsides.

I know this now be-cause recently mydaughter in Charlottetotaled her car. She’s

fine, but she’s currentlydealing with all the in-surance red tape, plushealing from her bumpsand bruises and buyinga new car — and Ihaven’t even once beentempted to rev up myhelicopter and take overall her decisions for her.

In fact, I realized it’sbeen years since I’veeven taken my copterout of the hanger.

It’s been slow, but I ammaking progress. Per-fect love is driving outmy fear.

clearly when she firsthad anything pub-lished in The GadsdenCounty Times. Shewas an 11th-grader atC a r t e r- Pa r r a m o r eHigh School in BethPonder’s class and sheand a classmate con-tributed to a page de-voted to news from theblack community. DuPont said the page wascalled “News andViews of Gadsden’sColored People.”

That sounds offen-sive today, but Du Pontexplained that at thetime, there was virtu-ally no minority newsreported from theblack community inarea papers.

“They just did notpublish black news un-less it was crime,” shesaid.

The Times page in-cluded weddings, fu-nerals, church newsand school news —“everything whittleddown to one page. That was it,” she said.

Du Pont graduatedin 1966 and thenheaded to FAMU, com-muting for about a yearand then moving oncampus. She said shemajored in English be-cause back then theschool did not offer a

journalism degree —but she knew shewanted to be a reporter.

“That’s all I’ve everwanted to be,” shesaid.

She worked in theschool’s public rela-tions office and at theschool newspaper, butshe also discovered itwas difficult to put herpassion for writingand sports togetherbecause so few womenback then were sportswriters. She said whenshe covered some col-lege football games, she was directed to sitoutside of the pressbox and wait for some-one to hand her statsfrom the game.

“For some reasonthey all called me lit-tle lady. And I hatedit.”

She said they alsooffered advice: “Littlelady, why you doingthis? You ought to bewriting about cook-ing.”

Du Pont attendedFAMU part-time andworked full-time, in-cluding a two-yearstint at the school’ssports information of-fice until she gradu-ated in 1974.

“I was a horriblestudent,” Du Pontsaid, “because I onlywanted to take classesthat I liked.”

After graduation, she went to work at

the Tallahassee Demo-crat writing women’snews and weather. DuPont recalled her edi-tor, Dorothy Clifford,as an old-fashionedwoman’s editor whoactually wore pumpsand a strand of pearlsto work every day.

“I think she mighthave been the lastwoman like that toexist,” Du Pont mused.

Later she coveredother areas includingschool news — and shecovered FAMU.

“I felt like I couldbe fair,” she said “Icould get more newsabout FAMU in thenewspaper.”

She left that job inthe mid-1970s to take astate public informa-tion job writing pressreleases. The moneywas better, but she gotbored. She missedrushing out to coverbreaking news, talkingto people, waiting forsources to call herback and then writing— as deadlinesloomed ever nearer.

Du Pont went towork for a TV stationin Miami, essentiallywriting about new TVshows. Before she tookthe job, Du Pont re-called the writer shewas replacing tellingher, “Good luck, littlegirl.”

She said she didn’tdiscover what that

meant until she real-ized she was the onlyblack person on staffwho wasn’t a janitor. And in the ’70s, an-other period of eco-nomic uncertainty, DuPont said thereseemed to be the atti-tude that she didn’tknow what she wasdoing and she was tak-ing someone else’s job— a relative’s orfriend’s job. A whiteperson’s job.

As a result, Du Pontsaid little things wouldgo wrong — like secre-taries who neverseemed to receive callsfrom anyone callingher back and assign-ments turned in thatmysteriously vanished.

But experienceslike that were commonin that era, she said, and her experienceswere not as extreme asthose of other blackjournalists. And whilethe best and brightestin the black commu-nity back then mighthave steered clear ofjournalism, Du Pontsaid those who stayedbecame a tough groupand blazed the trail forthe next generation.

She left the TV sta-tion and went to workat FAMU for two yearsbefore she took a jobworking on then-presi-dential candidateJimmy Carter’s cam-paign, and then for his

administration inWashington, D.C. Shesaid she worked therefor a year — untilRonald Reagan waselected and she gotfired.

“I was so disap-pointed and let down,I came home and sleptfor two days,” she said.

From there shewent to the PalmBeach Post. She saidshe stayed there aboutfive years until hermother, Christina, asked her to moveback to Quincy afterher father, Ira DuPont, died.

She said her par-ents had been marriedfor 66 years.

“Basically they onlyknew each other, andthen he was gone,” shesaid.

Du Pont resignedher job the next day.

She said she went towork in a friend’s Tal-lahassee office but hecould tell she was justgoing through the mo-tions. One day she saidhe showed her a news-paper ad: ‘“Alice, there’s a job at TheGadsden CountyTimes. Why don’t youapply for it? You knowyou’re not happyhere.”’

Alice said shewaited until 4:30 on astormy Friday after-noon to bring her re-sume to the Times

office. She had al-ready made her mindup that she didn’t havea shot: “I know thosewhite folks don’t wantany black womanworking for them, sowhy am I wasting mytime?”

She spoke to the ed-itor and by 5 thatstormy afternoon inthe mid-1980s, shesaid he had offeredher the job.

While a reporter’spay still hadn’t im-proved, Du Pont saidshe enjoyed the joband her friends andneighbors were gener-ous — bringing hergarden vegetables andfresh fish.

“If nothing else, youwill never starve todeath in Quincy,” shesaid, “because peoplejust like to feed you.”

After the editor left,Alice said she took hisslot, working with twoyoung reporters and atotal staff of about 30— and before sheknew it, nearly 30years went by.

“It passed so fast,”she said.

While Du Pont does-n’t see journalism inher future, she knowsher work isn’t done.

“Everything thathappens, happens fora reason,” she said.“You just never knowwhat God has in storefor you.”
