Thousands of job-ready, knowledge-based graduates Education and training contributes more than $1.7 billion to the local economy and with almost 30,000 international students from more than 130 different countries studying in the City, the Gold Coast is growing in popularity as a study destination both nationally and internationally. The Gold Coast has three research- intensive universities, which are among the leaders in their field, and a range of technical and training providers. We are looking for a transformative evolution of the City where existing strengths in the healthcare and education sectors are cultivated and expanded. We want to see not just world class medical, surgical and educational facilities, we want to see further world class research schools, laboratories and centres of excellence in technology such as robotics, biotechnology, nanotechnology and AI. The most engaged workers of the mid-21st Century will be knowledge workers who can and will choose where they work. Continued growth in knowledge-based workersThe Gold Coast, like other developing economies, is transforming into a knowledge economy. The Gold Coast tertiary education sector and all levels of government are committed to keeping pace by continuing to offer diverse and ever-changing course options to meet demand and attract high quality students.

Health sector innovation driven by large population growthFor the better part of two decades the Gold Coast has added close to 15,000 new residents per year. With the population set to double to 1.2 million people by 2050 there is opportunity for businesses and students alike to further drive sector innovation.

2 3WORKFORCE FOR FUTURE GOLD COAST

Undergraduate qualifications in Psychology and Social Sciences grew by 17% from 2014 to 2017, while the postgraduate course numbers grew by

12% over the same period.

There are more than 50 different health qualifications on offer.

Undergraduate Occupational Therapy qualifications grew by 38% from 2014 to 2017.

Speech Pathology graduates have grown by 45%

from 2014 to 2017.

Dentistry is a popular field of study with 36% growth in student numbers since 2014. Specialisations include Prosthetics, Implants

and Periodontology.

Large growth is evident in some of the more specialist courses such as Medical Laboratory

Science where graduate numbers have doubled since 2014.

MedicineGrowth has been

driven by an increase in postgraduate qualifications

(up 38% since 2014).

NursingThere has been

an 8% increase in undergraduates since 2014.

LawGraduate numbers have

increased by 11% from 2014 to 2017.

IT/ICTGrowth in graduate numbers

has been driven by a significant increase in the Bachelor of Digital

Media course (12% increase from 2014 to 2017), and Master of IT.

Engineering Undergraduate qualifications

increased by 12% from 2014 to 2017. This was

driven by strong growth in Civil Engineering as well as

Mechanical Engineering courses.

Architecture & Industrial Design

Graduates numbers in this field have almost doubled from 2014

to 2017. Masters graduates in the fields of Architecture and

Built Environment have grown by 55% since 2014.

Gold Coast has proven its ability to deliver a world class educational experience. This strength, combined with the City’s natural environment and enviable lifestyle, is a major drawcard for knowledge workers and presents a significant opportunity for the City.

Materialise were attracted to the Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct due to the long term vision of the precinct, the strong support from the city, the research strengths of Griffith University and the relevant skills and expertise being developed on the Gold Coast in the fast moving 3D printing software arena.
