“Happy Canada Day!”

The Kanata Legion’s annual President’s Canada Day BBQ on July 1st was a great party! Good turnout! Good Food! Good Entertainment! Good Fun! Good Fundraising!

In celebration of Canada’s 150th, extra effort and planning was made to make this year’s Canada Day celebrations extra special. The grounds were spruced up - trimming and gardening. Outdoor planters placed. Canada

Day decorations displayed! Potted plant centrepieces prepared. Hamburgers, hot dogs and a variety of salads prepared with TLC. Great music provided by singing artist Debra McCann to sing-a-long and/or dance to.

A very successful event with funds being raised for:

• the Homeless Veterans program through the sale of tickets for a chance to win a beautiful Canadian Maple Leaf quilt donated by the Kanata Kozy Quilters;

• the General Trust Fund through the sale of Catch the Ace Lottery tickets, and

• local veterans with donations collected at the L.A. book sale.

WW2 Veteran Bill Hoy and veteran Garry Fancy

cut the birthday cake.

Special thanks to Sobeys, Kanata North, for the donation of the food and beautifully decorated Canada Day cake. With

this generous donation of Sobeys there was no charge and thus, contributed towards good attendance and the success of the above three fundraisers.

Jack Edelson, a Second World War vet, remembers the

days of fighting overseas. - Photo by Kristy Wallace

Jack Edelson had a personal connection to Jews who were

rounded up, persecuted and murdered under Nazi rule during

the Second World War.

“I happened to be Jewish and I felt

obligated. When I started to hear

about it, I knew I had to do

something,” said Edelson, now 86,

from his Richmond Road

apartment.

But his Canadian pride was also

another reason why he knew he

had to join.

“Canada was asking for us,” he

added. “And us as young fellas,

we had our ways of doing things.”

Edelson was 19 when he decided

to fight in 1943. A graduate of

Ottawa Technical Secondary School, he joined the air force

to become a wireless air gunner.

When he left, he said he was leaving immediate family

behind.

“I had friends, but nothing really serious,” he said.

Edelson was devoted to the cause, and said he often tried not

to think about the bad things that could happen – including

death.

“It’s better not realizing what you might be getting yourself

into, and not knowing the worst,” he said. “You wouldn’t

end up not going if you thought about it.”

He said one of the things he remembers struggling with was

taking orders from somebody else. He laughs as he admits

he’s never liked doing what people tell him to do.

But one of the more serious aspects of war he remembers is

seeing planes shot down, and having to clean up the

wreckage and bodies.

He never saw concentration camps first-hand, and he

considers himself lucky for that.

At his homecoming, Edelson said his family had a big party

planned. He said his mother looked just as young as she did

when he had left a few years before.

“My mother was fortunate to be a young-looking person and

she always liked young people,” he said.

He remembers how happy his mother was when he returned

– but she had made mutton as his first real meal back home.

“My favourite was lamb stew and she made it when I left,”

he laughed. “I smelled the odour but it wasn’t pleasant to me

because we had so

much mutton

(overseas). I think I

embarrassed her.”

Edelson said he was

fortunate that he

didn’t suffer from

mental problems like

post-traumatic stress.

The most he suffered

was occasional dizzy

spells, which his

doctor said was

related to tension.

While he doesn’t consider himself religious, he believes that

someone was looking after him while he was at war. He

believes in God – and, even Jesus.

“I was on my own to try and make a life for myself, and you

have to think positive and think of the mistakes you make,”

Edelson said. “I just believe in others and try and do better.”

He added that after the war, he wasn’t a victim of anti-

Jewish discrimination – except the Knights of Columbus

wouldn’t accept him when he worked as a watchmaker

downtown after the war.

He said he was always fortunate enough to stand up to

somebody discriminating against him and could always

defend himself. Edelson was usually well-received and well-liked by people.

He added that he and two other guys from the air force

became friends despite their backgrounds.

“Johnny was French Catholic and when he joined the air

force he could hardly speak English,” he laughed. “His

father couldn’t believe that two of his best friends were a

Jew and a Protestant.”

After his watch making business, Edelson started a kosher

catering business downtown at Bank and Albert and would

deliver regularly to the Westboro area.

The war veteran recently moved into an apartment on

Richmond Road and is a member of the Kanata Legion.

This year he helped sell poppies around Kanata and will be

remembering the fallen this Remembrance Day – including

his own family members.

“I’ll remember my late father-in-law who fought in the First

World War,” he said.
