j u d g i n gClosed Judging Days: February 29 - March 1, 2020
JudgesQualified judges will be selected by the program coordinator to judge all exhibits and their decision is final. There will be at least one experienced judge (e.g., BJCP-certified, ciceron-certified) leading each panel. Novice judges and brewery staff will also participate in the judging process. The judging panels will be set up as to avoid having brewery staff judging their own products. If you are interested in judging or becoming a steward for the 2020 competition, apply here for judges and here for stewards.
Judging CriteriaThe OC Fair Commercial Beer compeititon is sanctioned by the BJCP and, thereby, follows 2015 BJCP Guidelines. Judges will be using modified Brewers Association Beer Style Guidelines provided by the San Diego International Beer Festival. Therefore, entries will be judged using the 2020 San Diego Interna-tional Beer Competition Style Guidelines in order to provide a wider range of divisions. A modified score-sheet, combining elements of the GABF scoresheet and amendments made by local county fairs (e.g., San Diego International Beer Festival, Los Angeles International Beer competition), will be used for judging.
Entries are placed using the American Judging System where beers are ranked one against another. • Gold, Silver and Bronze may be awarded in each Class, if judges so determine.• Gold winners will compete for Best of Show.
Reassignment & Combining of Entry Division or ClassAll entries will be judged based on the Class in which they were entered. It is the responsibility of the brewer to enter a beer in the correct Class and provide all of the entry information that the judges will need in order to evaluate the beer correctly. The competition organizers may combine related, or unrelated, Divisions and/or Classes in order to provide adequately sized or more equitably sized award categories.
Disqualified EntriesIf an entry is disqualified after judging is complete, the judge will not change the status of awards given for other entries.

Styles Requiring Additional Information • Entries in categories 702, 703B, 703C, 704, 705, 706, 707, 708A, 708B, 708D, 708F, 709A, 710A, 711,
712A, 712C, 713, 714, 715, 742G require additional entry information to be evaluated properly. Please refer to the 2020 OC Fair Beer Style guidelines to determine what additional entry information is required. Beers without the correct information may be at a disadvantage during the judging. Please be clear and specific.
• Please do not list any region on ingredients that might give away where your brewery is from (e.g. Michigan cherries).
• Use the “Description” field of the online entry form to provide this information. Failure to provide the required information may result in the entry being misevaluated or disqualified. For categories that don’t require additional information, please leave the “Description” field blank; the unnecessary information will need to be eliminated and the judges will not see it.
• If you have special instructions for the judges (e.g. request that the judges roll a bottle of Belgian Wit before serving), these may be included in the Description section.
Labeling• Bottles: Attach a competition label (below) to each bottle with a rubber band. Any entry with a label
that is glued or taped will be disqualified. Click here for a fillable form.• Boxes: Attach the shipping label (below) to each box containing your entries. This will aid delivery loca-
tions in quickly identifying which boxes need to be transfered to the Fairgrounds. Click here for a PDF.
