WHY NORTH?

The qualiTy Performance, especially over a long period of time, has a lot to do with quality. Apart from the famous high-quality finish of NORTH SAILS products, the DOUBLE.SEAm.TECHNOLOGY, and the choice of top fabrics, the imODULAR.DESIGN also plays a decisive role in this. It allows us to selectively use different and ideally suitable materials: as much as necessary (stability), as little as possible (lower weight). No other brand has so much confidence in its sails - and, by offering a 5-year guarantee, we give our word on their unsurpassed durability!

WHY NORTH?

Proven Performance NORTH SAILS because we’ve won themajor awards „PWA Constructors Champion“ and „ISA Constructors Champion“ three years in a row. This is important, because these awards are not for individual products or for a certain rider, but represent the addition of all results of men and women in all disciplines. That is, our team, our sails, and the rig components were once again unbeatable last year. Considering that all those distinctions were won exclusively with serial production models, this delivers the best proof for the performance of all NORTH SAILS products.

WHY NORTH?

innovaTion follows funcTion No matter what we develop or test, we always put function over innovation. This means that new ideas are good, but they only make sense when they offer real benefits. Therefore, we are 100% practice-oriented and already think about the final product during the first stages. We come very close to that target from the very first minute, since all prototypes are basically manufactured at their later produc-tion site and are not hand-made in laboratories. Despite this, in-novation secures a leading edge, and 2009 is bringing the launch of some real innovations. Apart from countless detail improve-ments of all products, we present a brand-new Concept Wave sail, an absolutely revolutionary mast system and a completely new boom front piece that, for the first time, allows both for more comfort and for unique trimming and tuning possibilities.

WHY NORTH?

Das Team Once again, countless top athletes have applied for our team, and we admitted some of the best into our big family, for the World Cup Racers are our driving force and our most important source of innovation. Therefore, we put particular emphasis on continuous communication between them, the engineers, and chief designer Kai Hopf. And since more team riders also deliver more input, we afford ourselves the biggest „development and test team“ of all manufacturers. Countless victories and world cup titles confirm our strategy, and are the reward for the hard work and the 100% commitment of all those involved.

WHY NORTH?

unique feaTures There can be no victories without performance. Therefore, we primarily focus on sail performance. The decisive factor is not only the high-grade profiles, but in particular the details typical of NORTH SAILS, for performance has a lot to do with the ideal trim. To allow everyone to mobilize the maximum sail power, we‘ve introduced „trimming tools“ such as, the unbeatable VTS, which shows exactly the point where the perfect downhaul tension is reached. Or the practical HTS for the best possible harness line positioning right at the beach. Or the easy-to-use scale for the correct boom height. Or, or, or,... it isn’t a coincidence that NORTH SAILS is considered the feature world champion among sail brands.

WHY NORTH?

Because iT´s winDsurf TechnologyThe new 2009 equipment shows what we are passionate about.

why norTh? why now?Are you asking yourself which rig brand you should choose? Are you asking yourself whether this is the right time to buy new gear? If yes, then you should read the following information carefully. One thing can be said beforehand: Our 2009 sails and rigs present massive innovations and radical new developments that will make your decision extremely easy!

WHY NORTH?

research & DeveloPmenT We take into account the most diverse windsurfers at the most diverse spots on this planet. Therefore, a great number of team riders (individual styles, different body weight) surf and work in our two test and development centers in maui and Gran Canaria. These two offer all conceivable conditions a surfer may encounter: flat water, sideshore or onshore, rough wind waves or waves big as a house, beach or reef breaks. These are ideal conditions for fiddling and filing in clearly defined work steps as long as it takes, until extreme prototypes are turned into sensible, serial production models.

WHY NORTH?

DesigneD anD engineereD in germany While the majority of our competitors develop their products in the Far East, we still engineer and design all products in Germany. Be it for our sails or for complex engineering components such as boom front pieces or the POWER.XT series – we always look for fully qualified engineers with a lot of experience who can develop functional and high-quality NORTH SAILS products in coopera-tion with national partners.

WHY NORTH?

Kai hoPf, The masTerminD There is no other designer who has worked for one and the same sail brand for so long as Kai Hopf. Kai Hopf, an Australian and former World Cup winner is one of the most influential sail makers worldwide. Kai, who also develops high-grade fin profiles in his free time, still prefers to spend most of his time on water to thoroughly test the designs himself and to live his passion. He‘s been the head of sail development at NORTH SAILS for more than 15 years, amassing a treasure of experience that‘s simply irreplaceable. In 2009, Kai Hopf once again delivers proof of his innovation power in the shape of the radical EGO model and an optimized performance sail range.

WHY NORTH?

Björn DunKerBecK, a culT figure in winDsurfingLike no other man, Björn Dunkerbeck is the personification of windsurfing. His victories, his charisma, and not least his ath-letic stature, have turned him into a media star and an ambas-sador of the sport. For years now, Björn and NORTH SAILS have been complementing each other perfectly, joining their efforts in spreading the fascination of windsurfing around the globe.

Björn, who defended his World Champion title for an unbeliev-able twelve times in a row until 1999, is today considered a living legend. In 2005, he set a historic record by winning his 34th title, something that no other athlete has ever achieved in any other sport. Oh, and by the way, Björn also set a new world speed re-cord over the nautical mile on a WARP F2007. His unbelievable average speed of 76.19 km/h will go down in the history books once again. moreover, he is convinced that he will soon be the first to break the 50-knots barrier.

why norTh? why now?We are not just putting together short-lived marketing products, but developing sound windsurfing equipment that stays state-of-the-art over several years and is being constantly optimized. The best proof of this is the legendary NORTH SAILS long-term compatibility of our rig components.

Freestyle and big wave riding still remain the most spectacular disciplines – the first on flatwater, the second on waves high as a house. in between, there is a new generation of windsurfers celebrating radical Freestyle moves on waves. Classic wave riding is enriched with extremely difficult manoeuvres, and the thrust of the wave propels Freestyle into a new dimension.

Meanwhile, world Cup slalom, racing, and formula have reached such an unimaginably high level that only top-class pilots can compete. accordingly, the demands on the material leave no room for compromise. and rightly so, since these riders don‘t stand a chance without crème-de-la-crème equipment. this explains why we permanently develop, modify, test, and optimize even the tiniest detail, always in search of improvements, of the smallest pinch of extra performance, the maximum of what is currently possible. Only the ultimate solution will deliver the fastest equipment, ensuring our edge over the competition.

there is no magazine issue without reports on speed events, on the new lust for speed, and the revival of slalom racing. those who’ve tracked their high speeds and the miles covered on the display of a GPS device, or have felt that special tingle on brutally fast downwind courses will know what this is all about. So it’s no surprise that the once most popular windsurfing style is on its way to becoming the number one again. and this is happening at almost every spot, since riding at full throttle is possible everywhere.

above all, windsurfing must mean one thing: Fun! always and everywhere! this is what Crossover sails were invented for. they will let you do what you want, the way you want it. whether full-throttle turns or tricks: your style counts, both at land and at sea.

athletes have won everything that there is to win using our profiles. revolutionary approaches and technologies have always been and will always be part of our success. almost all details and features that went into our windsurfing products emerged during the development and evolution of the warP world Cup race sail and its predecessors, which always delivered the highest performance possible.

when comparing them with other sail brands, you should always pay particular attention to the unique solutions and innovations that are responsible for the performance of NOrtH SailS windsurfing. you will realize that most of the features can be found only in our sails.

≥ 03 CROSS.bATTEN.CONCEPT Power and hand-ling optimally combined. this intelligent solution, shifts the sails centre of effort downwards and supports the big surface area in the boom area especially useful in manoeuvre oriented sails, and allows for an early planing profile without loosing handling. Optimal in combination with the new Cutaway.ClEw!

≥ 04HYPER.CAM Soft rotation and excellent rigging comfort. the ultimate in sailing, with unequalled advantages.Advantage 1: Super-fast rigging up (sliding up instead of snapping on the mast) without the need for repeated changes/corrections of luff and outhaul tension.Advantage 2: Minimum friction, and thus very soft batten rotation, since the HyPEr.CaM features free rollers without plastic buckles, so that only the rollers touch the mast.Advantage 3: Optimized shape for the best possible mast pocket profile and ideal aerodynamicsAdvantage 4: Fits all mast diameters, since only the rollers but never the plastic body touch the surface, which also makes the HyPEr.CaM always extremely easy to rotate.

≥ 05DURA.LUFF.PATCH Extremely stable luff reinforcement. the area around the boom cutout is particularly exposed to wear and tear, because the luff panel always forms wrinkles when inserting the mast. Over time, this „accordion effect“ may cause cracks in the monofilm. the flexible dura.luFF.PatCH reinforces the area around the boom and creates a soft transition to the monofilm, while preventing cracks in the film.

≥ 06UNIvERSAL.TACK.FITTING Minimum effort for a perfect trim. the three integrated brass rollers significantly reduce trim forces on the luff. the reason for using brass is its self-lubricating properties that prevent seizing. the rolls can be quickly removed to use a pulley hook. raceheads can even replace the rolls with high-end rolls with ball bearings.

≥ 07MAST.SLEEvE.OPENER No more friction when inserting the mast into the mast pocket. a brilliant trick makes inserting the mast a piece of cake. the NOrtH SailS logo above the boom cutout opens the mast pocket just a little, allowing the rider to insert the mast with just one hand, without having to pull at the luff all the time.

5 YEAR WARRANTY Quality guaranteed. to prove the superior durability and unique NOrtH SailS quality, we grant a 5-year warranty on all our sails (does not include monofilm)!

≥ 02RIPSTOP.FRAME.DESIGN No more ripping. it doesn‘t always take gigantic waves to damage a sail. Sometimes even the harness-hook can drill a hole into the profile when you get thrown off your board. although the hole is usually not a problem, it may present a risk if the sail is ripped across the whole panel on your way back to the beach. in a worst-case scenario, the sail will rip into two pieces beyond repair. the riPStOP.FraME.dESiGN, consisting of reinforced fabrics that frame the entire sail, helps avoid this risk. Moreover, the intelligent combination of lightweight materials in the centre and robust materials on the perimeter results in a very low weight.

≥ 03CUTAWAY.CLEW Minimized rotation forces, improved handling. the brand new ClEw.Cutaway has an extremely positive influence on the sails agility and handling. the shorter and stiffer boom makes the sail more compact, stabilizes the profile in overpower and reduces the sails´ centrifugal mass to greatly facilitate the handling.

For more than 50 years, we have been focusing exclusively on research, development, and production of high-quality profiles and sails for yachts, and for windsurfing and kitesurfing boards.

Page 49: Consumer Brochure 2009 English

≥ 07≥ 06

≥ 01 dOuBlE.SEaM.tECHNOlOGy

DOUbLE.SEAM.TECHNOLOGYtwice as durable, half the stretch.

NOrtH SailS stands for unsurpassed quality that guarantees a longer life for our sails. the triple zig-zag seams significantly contribute to this. and they don‘t come, as usual, in a single, but in a double version! they cover all exposed crash areas that would otherwise be damaged. the result is higher resistance to tear and a reduction of stretch by up to 50% as a result of the second seam, also benefiting profile stability and performance. Only the dOuBlE.SEaM.tECHNOlOGy by NOrtH SailS can deliver this!

≥ 09TWIN.STRAP Keeps the sail rolled up and the protector on the mast. this new, improved version of the brilliantly simple fastening system not only keeps the sail safely rolled up, but also makes sure that the mast protector is closely attached and fastened to the mast while surfing. Moreover, the additional size mark allows you to identify the sail‘s size without having to unroll it (not available with drivE)!

≥ 09SHARKSKIN.PROTECTOR Prevents chafing. Highly abrasion-resistant protector tissue - intentional lack of a rib structure to distribute friction forces (e.g. non-skid contact) as smoothly as possible.

≥ 10MINI.bATTEN Eliminates unintentional leech flutter. Short, highly effective miniature battens support the areas between the long battens and prevent any annoying flutter.

≥ 10HYPER.LEECH II Makes speed sails even faster! this solution was inspired by air-plane wings. the precisely defined spot of HyPEr.lEECH ii is located slightly higher, improving tension distribution in the leech and making the reaction of the top extremely sensitive. the result is an improved loose-leech twist for better control and higher stability in gusts or when getting over-powered.

≥ 11DURATECH.FOOT long-term warranty for the foot. the foot of the sail is often dragged across the anti-skid surface during water starts or accelerating, es-pecially with wide boards. the patented duratECH.FOOt keeps the seams in a wide plastic channel, protecting them against damage from the rough anti-skid surface.

≥ 12HTS HARNESSLINE.TRIM.SYSTEM Say goodbye to misplaced harness lines! Forget the time-consuming search for the ideal harness line position, the numb forearms, and the endless fiddling around! the patented print on the sail shows exactly where the centre of the harness line has to be. Just position the two ends symmetrically at the left and right of the print, that‘s all.

≥ 13INDIvIDUAL.bOOM.LENGTH.INDICATIONChoosing the right boom length without experimenting. Since the boom is posi-tioned at different points on the boom depending on the rider‘s height, the ideal boom length varies due to the different angles. to make it easier to find the right length fast, the individual recommenda-tions are now written directly on the mast pocket at boom level.

≥ 14TAPE.TECHNOLOGY No wrinkles. all seam tapes are cut to match the curve instead of being glued in a curved fashion, thus preventing the tape from being wrinkled or coming off.

TT.TOP II improved sail control at higher wind speeds. Kai Hopf relied on warP F2008 to design the tt.tOP ii. the concave shape is slightly reduced, which improves tensions and allows for a more effective, three-dimensional top twist, meaning that the top twists not only horizontally but also vertically under strong winds. this virtually neutralizes gusts, keeps the rig steady in the rider‘s hand, and allows the sail to be used in a much larger range of winds.

FLIP.ROTATING.SYSTEM No jerking, no hard rotation! the clever adjustment and arrangement of the batten pockets allows the battens to rotate freely behind the mast, thus eliminating the loathed jerks during shifts.

INTELLIGENT.bATTEN.SYSTEM individual batten setting for better performance! Since each batten fulfils a different task, we use no less than 7 (!) different batten types. they differ not only in their cross section (round or rectangular) but also in the materials used (glass, glass-carbon com-posites, full carbon) and in their geometry (thickness, width). Moreover, all battens have specific stiffness degrees and profiles, regardless of their length for 100% centre of effort stability in the centre of the sail, optimum twist in the top (horizontally and vertically), and reduced top weight (easier handling).

X.PLY Excitingly beautiful, extremely durable. as many as three different X.Ply layers with varying fibre density are used in our 2009 sails. the materials are always carefully selected to match the sail‘s appli-cation and to obtain the ideal combination of durability and weight.

PROGRESSIvE.bATTEN.CONFIGURATION(X_tyPE, Natural, drivE). Better handling, total control. the number of battens plays a decisive role when it comes to a stable centre of effort, weight, and handling. the PrOGrESSivE.BattEN.CONFiGuratiON introduces a system that determines the ideal number of battens for each sail, depending on size and intended application. this provides for an ideal combination of performance and lowest possible weight for each sail.

≥ For years, the name warP has come to mean the sail that exceeds all limits, and has little in common with a conventional mass- produced sail. it is not only one of the most successful racing sails on the market (won the speed world record for serial material in 2008), but also a test laboratory and a development platform for designing groundbreaking features. From this perspective, we are day by day shaping the world Cup warP of the future together with our team. this continuous process generates experience and insights that secure our technological edge, and victories in the world Cup. Eventually, the most successful developments regularly benefit the serial production of all our sails.

≥ we set even higher targets to Kai Hopf and the world Cup team for the new warP: we want to create the ultimate racing sail, one that can do more than just being the fastest! although maximum speed is very important, it is not the sole decisive factor. it‘s the combination of starting speed, constant velocity, and maximum speed that will turn a good sail into a winner‘s sail. therefore, the new warP will accelerate even more directly at the start, develop unlimited speed, and possess a lot of stamina, especially when accelerating after a jibe. Power-saving rig control and easy handling allow the rider to concentrate on his tactics during the entire race are a prerequisite so they can deliver 100% performance. Since regattas are often decided at the buoy, easy handling plays a decisive role when shift-ing. the decisive elements for the particularly easy rotation of the warP are the ultra-light rotating HyPEr.CaMS, the sophisticated arrangement of the battens, and the shape of mast pocket.

≥ warP continues to set the standards in the world Cup only through this permanent evolution and optimization. the constant modifica-tions are the reason why new warP designs are not introduced at regular intervals but only when the next evolution level has been reached. due to extraordinarily complex production methods, and to prevent any material that is not state of the art from reaching the market, this product is available in a very limited edition and only within a reasonably short period of time. this guarantees all those who need it that what they see is what they get: world Cup racing. ≥ with one batten less, a marginally slimmer mast pocket, and a slightly reduced sail foil tension, the raM F9 requires less effort to control compared to the warP 2008. in addition, the brand new ClEw.Cut-away outhaul has an extremely positive impact on handling:

≥ the boom is now 5 to 10cm shorter and thus stiffer, not only stabilizing the profile when getting overpowered, but also reducing the sail‘s centrifugal mass to greatly facilitate shifting at the buoy. apart from ensuring super-soft rotating boards and smoothly gliding HyPEr.CaMS, this also eliminates hard, jerky rotation.

≥ as a bonus, the raM F9 offers the option of using 4 or just 3 cambers, making it even easier to adjust for high performance or manoeuvrability. with a combination of tt.tOP, super rigid BOX.BattEN, and the wide, conical aErO.SlEEvE mast pocket with a radical leading edge profile, the new raM F9 can reach speeds that stun both GPS and regatta pilots on all courses. despite this, the raM F9 is astonishingly easy to ride for a projectile of this calibre – which explains why it‘s simply so much faster.

≥ a proof of how serious we are about the new raM F9 and how brutally powerful it is, is shown by the fact that it is already certified for all 2009 Pwa events, and can therefore be used in all world Cup events in the new year! Karin Jaggi was already competing very successfully on the raM F8 at all 2008 Pwa slalom contests.

≥ Speed World Champion 2008: Karin Jaggi, RAMSpeed vice World Champion 2008: Patrik Diethelm, RAM

≥ The RAM F9 is the younger brother of World Cup WARP F2008! Although it corre-sponds over 90% to the fast-est WARP we ever built, it has its own distinct character, bringing benefits for most pilots.

≥ One can immediately feel that this sail incorporates not only all our experience from the NOrtH SailS racing range, but also the power and the latest features of the raM F9. it is also fascinating that the S_tyPE can be used more flexibly and more universally than its predecessor, making it suitable for a huge number of board types.

≥ this is partly due to the familiar SwitCHaBlE.CaM.OPtiON allow-ing the sail to be ridden with 3 or 2 cambers, and in particular to the new ClEw.Cutaway outhaul that significantly improves handling thanks to its shorter boom and reduced rotation forces.

≥ another reason is the medium-size CONiCal.aErO.SlEEvE.dESiGN mast pocket, which represents the ideal compromise between opti-mum propulsion and comfortable water start behaviour. regardless of whether you are using it at high speeds or for relaxed cruising and jibing, the new S_tyPE has many faces, rendering it perfectly suitable as a universal performer.

≥ as to its durability: apart from legendary features such as dOuBlE.SEaM and duratECH.FOOt, we gave the CrOSS.BattEN an ad-ditional seam protection to prevent chafing in this section as well. Simply ingenious: all S_tyPE models work ideally with one mast length!

≥ The S_TYPE is our most suc-cessful sail in all interna-tional magazine tests and is meanwhile considered THE reference in its class.

≥ The update for 2009 is now under way, and it offers even more performance and controllability!

≥ this facilitates rig control and steering, and significantly contributes to what is unusually high pressure point stability for a NoCam sail. thanks to the PrOGrESSivE.BattEN.CONFiGuratiON, all X_tyPE models possess a number of battens relevant to size and application, and Kai Hopf fits sizes 6.0 and 5.4 with only 6 battens.

≥ this helps reduce weight and improves handling. in sails starting at 6.6m2, the rig’s agility reaps a huge benefit from the new ClEw.Cutaway outhaul, which allows for the use of a shorter boom while minimizing the rotation forces of the X_tyPE. By the way, all the new X_tyPE can be used with a single 460 mast - one mast fits all!

≥ Basically, the requirements for a Power wave and a Freestyle sail are very similar: great planning potential combined with maximum handling and good controllability. up to a size of 5.4m2, the duKE was therefore designed as a powerful wave sail according to Björn’s specifications. Since it possesses the greatest trimming versatility of all our wave sails, it can also be easily controlled by medium-weight pilots. the use of stable X.Ply 725 in the centre panel of the small duKE increases durability, leaves room for reserves, and underscores the suitability of the small duKE for waves.

≥ For sizes 5.9m2 and above, Kai Hopf improved the new duKE strictly according to the specifications of our Freestyle world Champion Jose “Gollito” Perez and EFPt Champion andré Paskowski. although 5 battens and HyPEr.lEECH ii were already part of the standard equipment in the previous year, it is the reworked, less nervous tt.tOP and the slightly reduced sail foil tension of the current model that really optimize behaviour and allow for easier pumping, controlling, and more sensitive steering of the rig, especially when carrying out difficult Freestyle tricks. all duKE models are made to suit SdM masts, which ideally fit this type of a more direct sail.

≥ Only in rare occasions such physically different windsurf-ers became so intensively involved in the development of a single sail as was the case with björn Dunkerbeck, Gollito, and André Paskowski.

Everyone is impressed by the performance and the lightning-fast reaction of the iCE, which is totally independent from one’s own body weight.

≥ all this despite the fact that we are reacting to a general trend toward slightly softer profiles, and have also introduced a reduced sail foil tension even with this sail for the first time. as a result, the new iCE feels a bit more elastic, and it is easier to pump and to control. these properties are enhanced by the modified HyPEr.lEECH and the new, less nervous top.

≥ Moreover, the iMOdular.dESiGN’s optimized sail weight continues to have a positive impact on handling. Since the iCE was designed for all world Cup spots, it functions equally well in Hookipa or Sylt, on Gran Canaria or at your favourite spot.

≥ For us, the EGO represents a symbol of innovation, built with exceptional materials to incorporate the latest trends in sail design. yet despite our passion for innovation, we are true to our motto „innovation follows function“. with this in mind, Kai Hopf developed the BalaNCEd.luFF.lENGtH, a precisely balanced ratio of luff length to boom length. as short and compact as possible for radical handling and as long as necessary for a decent twist, ensuring a maximum wind range. in order to achieve sensible sizes, Kai uses the proven NOrtH SailS CrOSS.BattEN.CONCEPt in combination with the new ClEw.Cutaway, reaping real benefits for handling. when it comes to the number of battens, Kai is rather conservative, since good high end control and a wide wind-range still demand 5 battens. Of course, similar to the vOOdOO, the EGO was designed as a hardcore sail. therefore, all smaller sizes feature a window panel made of large-meshed Heavy duty X.Ply, while the large sizes starting at 5.3 are made with monofilm for weight reasons.

≥ IMPORTANT: the EGO is the first sail exclusively designed for rdM masts due to its special characteristics (very elastic). the smaller mast diameter perfectly matches the softer sail and shorter luff.

iFRONT – the fastest and most comfortable NorTH saiLs boom front piece with unique trimming and tuning opportunities.

We have known for a long time that the boom construction, and in particular the head, has a big impact on rig performance. We carried out extensive comparison tests on flatwater, on Gran Canaria and maui, eventually proving that rigs are extremely fast when they remain steady in the rider’s hand, allowing for controlled rig steering. The two spots are so different, and so are the conditions that present individual challenges for the ideal boom. While wind and water conditions on flatwater are mostly calm, calling for larger sails, exactly the opposite prevails on Gran Canaria. actually, in order to achieve optimum propulsion at both spots and tireless wind-surfing especially on Gran Canaria, one would need two heads of different stiffness or attenuation. a very rigid, direct front piece for flatwater, and an attenuated, more flexible head for harsher conditions. This is an effort that only professional regatta pilots will not shun, but which otherwise makes windsurfing excessively complicated. Yet who would willingly forsake the extra performance and the additional comfort? This is exactly what we focused on.

The knowledge acquired by our development team helped it devise the following easily understandable formulas:

≥ 01TOTal.Flex.cONTROl individual flex adjustment. in recent years, the challenge has been to develop a head that unites both characteristics without having to accept any compromises. after three years of intensive development work, we’ve reached that goal! The brand-new ifroNT head is the first to offer an adjustment and tuning option that changes the overall characteristics of the boom, allowing for ideal adjustment to all conditions. This is made possible by the individually adjustable fLEx.CoNTroLLEr in three levels (patent pending).

≥ Flex.cONTROlleR SOFT SeTUP:Clearly defined, vertical flexibility, especially for Wave sails or for days with choppy, uneasy waters for more comfort, better rig control, higher speeds, and good shock absorption after high jumps

≥ Flex.cONTROlleR MeDIUM SeTUP: medium flex

≥ Flex.cONTROlleR STIFF SeTUP: maximum rigidity, especially on a calm water surface and with big sails with long booms, since the length of the tube already provides for sufficient shock absorption

≥ Low wind = calm waters = large sail, long boom = less rig movement Ideal solution: inflexible, rigid head

≥ High wind = choppy waters = small sail, short boom = nervous rig = jumps Ideal solution: easily flexing head

≥ 02aUTO.clOSe revolutionary rigging. but what’s the fastest boom worth if it’s difficult and time-consuming to operate? Therefore, the new ifroNT is equipped with the NorTH saiLs auTo.CLosE (patent pending), in which a tappet automatically snaps and closes the hinge cap when rigging up. This helps avoid threading and trapped fingers.

≥ 04lOckeD.RDM.aDaPTeR 100% fit and compatibility with rdm. additional rubberadapters for rdm masts that either stick on the mast or – in most cases – get lost, are a thing of the past thanks to the ifroNT, since the rdm adapter is now directly and firmly connected to the head (but can be removed anytime without any tools). This improves rigging comfort significantly since, logically, the cuff no longer slips on the mast, let alone gets lost or displaced. an additional advantage: it weighs 50% less than previous adapters! Comes with silver, Gold and platinum 140 and 150 only.

> cONclUSION

The new ifroNT head revolutionizes the boom. Thanks to the individual adjustment of the flex, the boom’s ab-sorption can be regulated at the rider’s discretion, in order to reduce rig ner-vousness in choppy waters and always maintain a constant angle of attack. or the rider can opt for uncompromis-ing stiffness, making large sails even faster on calm waters, because in race mode, the new ifroNT can effortlessly compete with the stiffest heads on the market – perfect for slalom or formula.

≥ 03UlTRa.cleaN.ROPe.STORaGe Clearing up the loose ends! There is nothing more un-nerving or annoying than a loose dangling piece of rope on your boom front end, and no longer is it necessary! for the first time the ifront has a spot in the front end closing lever, where the rope can be stored both clean and secure, although ready to grab instantly, if required.

NeW: PlaTINUM The new carbon pLaTiNum was designed from scratch, and is now manufactured using aErospaCE.prEprEG.TECHNoLoGY (same as used for our masts) for the first time. This also applies to the new, white tail ends. To meet even the highest requirements, we distinguish between Wave to freestyle lengths from 1.40 to 1.50m and longer slalom and formula lengths of 1.80m to 2.60m. The bending curve of the short sizes features the New school shape, preventing the rider’s front arm from being over-stretched. The large sizes, however, feature extensive race bending curves. all models are equipped with the radical ifroNT head, whose flex and absorption can be adjusted in three steps from comfortable to ultra-stiff. New: pLaTiNum 215cm and 260cm have the same boom body, and are extremely extendable thanks to two ovErsiZEd.ouTsidE tail ends of different lengths. as a result, the 215cm size can now be extended to 310cm by simply replacing the tail end, without compromising its rigidity! The short pLaTiNum models still have an inserted tail end for maximum grip comfort. The short and long versions also differ in tube diameter: extra grip with 28mm for lengths up to 1.50m, and super-stiff 30mm diameter for the longer booms.

GOlD The so-called boNdEd.TECHNoLoGY is the unique NorTH saiLs production technique that uses space-technology adhesives to glue the tubes with the head. This is what makes the GoLd models so strong and rigid, also keeping the weight very low. The propul-sion forces are transferred directly and completely free of play thanks to the new ifroNT front piece and the carbon end piece, allowing for individual comfort settings through flex adjustment. The short sizes come with a thin, 28mm diameter to help avoid cramped forearms and increase comfort, and all GoLd models over 1.80m feature 30mm tubes with a soft, safe-grip coating. New: the short sizes up to 1.50m now feature an ergonomically ideal New school bending curve so that both hands are at an equal distance from the centre of the sail, thus preventing the front arm from being overstretched. all in all, a very rigid and qualitative performance boom for demanding riders.

SIlveR The more affordable version of the GoLd series, also manufactured using the boNdEd.TECHNoLoGY (cannot be disassembled). The silver series is also equipped with the brand-new ifroNT front piece, although it features „only“ an aluminium tail end, which nevertheless consists of a single part and is thus free of play. features such as flex adjustment and length-specific rdm tubes with a 28mm or 30mm diameter (starting at 1.80m) combine very high rigidity with great comfort. New: the short sizes up to 1.50m now feature an ergonomically ideal New school bending curve so that both hands are at an equal distance from the centre of the sail, thus preventing the front arm from being overstretched. a total of five boom lengths with a refined specific bending curve are available, making siLvEr booms perfectly suitable for all sails from Wave to freerace.

ReD With a diameter of only 30mm, rEd is a brilliant allrounder. Combined with the brand-new ifroNT head, it delivers high rigidity and durability. an additional contribution to safety and superior comfort comes from the doubLE.piN.LoCk system, which firmly locks the boom while preventing the tubes from twisting. since each size possesses an individual bending curve, the rEd series suits all sail types (flex not adjustable; rdm adapter not included).

NORTH SaIlS BeST.FIT.SYSTeMperfectly matching components.one thing is sure: all NorTH saiLs components fit almost all sails of different brands and improve their performance. in addition, there are ideal combinations that can get the maximum out of every rig. Components within the rEd, siLvEr, GoLd and pLaTiNum series make great combinations, and were designed to perfectly match each other. in terms of performance and price, the following rule of thumb applies: the more money you spend, the lighter and more dynamic and powerful your rig will be. This means that you determine how much performance you need or how much you are willing to invest in your performance.

THe PeRFecT RIG for over a decade NorTH saiLs has been one of the few brands who develop all Windsurfing rig components for use exclusively by NorTH saiLs. This guarantees that all NorTH saiLs components are state-of-the-art and work better, and when used in conjunction with a North sail generate the absolute maximum performance!

WHY NorTH?

IMPORTaNT: SDM / RDM as a rule, a distinction is made between sdm (standard) and the increasingly popular rdm (reduced) mast diameters. very few people know that rdm masts make sense only up to lengths of around 430cm, since they present a rather soft flex behaviour as a result of their smaller cross section. Therefore, they are primarily suitable for Wave/freestyle sails, their advantage being that they are easier to grip during manoeuvres. Large, mostly performance-oriented sails therefore need stiffer masts with a „more direct“ flex. This characteristic calls for a larger mast cross section in order to reach the required stiffness at all.

aeROSPace.PRePReG.TecHNOlOGYall NorTH saiLs masts are manufac-tured using the ultimate aErospaCE.prEprEG.TECHNoLoGY, and mean-while this method is also used for the rEd and siLvEr series. This method provides for a computer-controlled adjustment of the resin and carbon con-tent, and processing takes place under extremely high compression pressure (up to 10 tons!). Therefore, the masts themselves only differ in the percentage of carbon content and its quality.

TOTal.PROTecTION.SHIelD The NorTH saiLs polyamide coating is a groundbreaking development in mast construction. This highly abrasion-re-sistant material that covers the entire pLaTiNum and Gold series masts provides for 100% surface protection! No abrasion, no scratches, or damage to the carbon fibres by the camber or the boom front piece. at the same time, this viscoelastic skin reinforces the entire structure and increases fracture resistance by approx. 20%, without any impact on the bending curve.

NeW: MORe RDM MaSTS in addition to the well-known sdm masts (sdm = standard diameter mast) there is a trend setting more towards thinner or rdm masts (rdm = reduced diameter mast). That´s why our new mast program is more complete, NorTH saiLs rdm masts are now available in 3 ranges, each with a different carbon content and a price to suit everyone.

DROP.SHaPe <> cONSTaNT.TaPeR. all standard diameter (sdm) NorTH saiLs masts come in length-specific shapes: up to a length of 430cm, the masts feature a drop.sHapE geometry with a significantly tapered boom area. This allows us to transfer the rotation and handling advantages of rdm masts to classic masts without the need for special extensions or boom adapters. all sdm masts with a length of 460cm or above feature the CoNsTaNT.TapErEd geometry that forms a conical shape from the base to the top.

The 2009 mast range offers even greater choice, technical innovations, and a revolution that underscores our commitment to user-friendliness. Even if the names are still the same, they describe a significantly optimized high-tech product. an overview of the major developments for 2009:

simply a sensation, and a blessing for all those who fret and fume over unwieldy masts! The siLvEr3 series represents a new development that will revolutionize mast construction. it is the first-ever three-piece mast that is not only shorter during trans-port, but also offers an affordable way of varying mast length simply by replacing the middle piece. This new concept brings huge benefits for stow-ing and performance, since the critical connection point of two-piece masts is right in the middle of the mast, with the most negative impact on the bending curve through the resulting stiffness. The new concept now shifts this „hard spot“ further down or up, creating a more harmonious bending curve in the middle. as a result, the siLvEr3 series is a powerful alternative that will fit in almost every trunk. of course, there are also rdm and sdm versions that cover all sail types and brands!

PlaTINUM SDM The pLaTiNum series was developed for World Cup pros and gearheads. it represents our most individ-ual and dynamic line, with lengths from 370 to 430cm focusing on Wave and freestyle, those with 460cm and above on race. of course, this series is manufactured using the aErospaCE.prEprEG.TECHNoLoGY, the most precise and sophisticated technology currently available. pressures of up to 10 tons result in an extremely homogeneous carbon-resin mixture, and reduce the resin content to a minimum. This is what delivers the sheer unbelievable reflex and durability properties of this series. The new white coating made of 100% abrasion-resistant polyamide protects the carbon surface against mechanical impact, and increases fracture resistance by approx. 20%! Naturally, the pLaTiNum models are also sealed with a white surface that prevents heat from reaching critical areas, and avoids thermal overstress.

INNOvaTIve MaTeRIal MIxTURe We are also exploring new ways in harness construction to achieve the ideal combination of direct power transfer and pleasant comfort. against the current trend of fully moulded waist harnesses, we intentionally use only partially moulded parts. The reason is that fully moulded harnesses consist of a single foam density, so that they are equally hard everywhere. although this type of construction looks spectacular, it can‘t be really comfortable. Therefore, we combine classic materials with three-dimensional components. We use foams of different type, hardness, and form, allowing us to adjust the different harness parts to the respective requirements and keep the harness flexible. all 3d patches are covered with very soft Lycra to avoid grazing the skin when surfing stripped to the waist.

GUIDeD BY cOlOUR

freestyle and big wave riding still remain the most spectacular disciplines – the first on flatwater, the second on waves high as a house. in between, there is a new generation of windsurfers celebrating radical freestyle moves on waves.

NORTH SaIlS BeST.FIT.SYSTeM perfectly matching components. one thing is sure: all NorTH saiLs components fit almost all sails of different brands and improve their performance. in addition, there are ideal combinations that can get the maximum out of every rig.
