What are you searching for? An aggressive, skate style in the waves? Planing

in lower winds? Jibing at full speed? Going for spocks, tail slides or willy skippers? Or is it simple fun you want to have?

Maybe it’s about all those things? Well, now you can decide. With NORTH SAILS there are no more compromises.

_N44vidar jensen1st, wave worldcup vargas 20011st, freestyle worldcup costa brava 2000

Never before has a sail had so much success in such a short period of time. The DR.X exploded on the scenein 2001, and the new 2002 models are poised to do the same. THE most extreme wave sail of this year’s programwas refined even more, giving it an elastic feeling and more neutral handling. Therefore, it will meet the demands ofa perfect sideshore-/side-onshore engine. Combined with the shortest boom length of all of the NORTH SAILS wavesails the DR.X allows you to boost jumps as well as ride waves aggressively in front of the judge’s eyes.

The brand-new Freemove/Freeride sail can adapt to any situation. The sail sizes up to 5.8 are designed as Freemove sails (focus onhandling and control), while the larger sizes are designed asFreeride sails (focus on handling and low end power). Both conceptsare the perfect synthesis of speed, acceleration and handling. TheTONIX is a true sail of many talents. All this is achieved with therevolutionary CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT, which positions thecenter of weight further down and therefore makes the sail feelperfectly balanced. In addition, the deeper profile provides earlierplaning, awesome acceleration and unique handling.

The no-cam blast machine puts a smile on your face in every jibe, due to its effortless rotation and easy handling. Besidesthe tremendous low-end power, the TRANS AMl will also impress in top end speed. The FLIP.ROTATING.SYSTEM, where thebattens rotate without touching the mast combined with the narrower mast sleeve make the sail very user friendly. Advantagesyou will notice immediately when jibing, water-starting and last but not least rigging. Attention: The camber equipped WARP III andthe MATCH RACE are better suited for extreme upwind or downwind courses.

Equalizes the gusts. The response to the FLAIR.TOP was so overwhelming, that we will integratethis feature in all sail categories. What worked so well last year in our wave-/freestyle sails wenow implement into all 2002 models.Through the unique construction with a lightweight top batten, the top not only twists horizontallybut also vertically. So the FLAIR.TOP works like a valve. According to the wind pressure theFLAIR.TOP either releases power or transfers it into acceleration. It doesn’t matter how you rigyour sail. The FLAIR.TOP even works with less downhaul tension, when rigged at VTS-min forthe best low end.

A. B. C. A. Speed-oriented sails need the secondbatten below the boom to support thelarge area and to avoid the gap betweenthe board and the sails (close the gap). This has a negative effect on the handling.

B. In classic wave sails with the “batten-free” area above- and below the boomthe profile starts collapsing earlier, which reduces the wind range.

C. CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT eliminatesboth problems:

1. the intelligent batten configurationguarantees the handling of a maneuversail (just one batten ends below the boom).

2. the diagonal batten supports theinstable area around the boom and makesfor superior draft stability (no "batten-free”zone in the whole boom area).

Makes speed oriented sails even faster. Designer Larry Herbig identified the point where the top ofthe sail reacts differently to angles of attack and wind gusts. He found he could increase the twistingsection(top) of the sail and not affect the power section(bottom). This enabled him to create sails withimproved twist, more power and more control. This also enables increased leech tension, improving thelow end power.

Optimum combination of handling and power. There is one thing everyonewants: plane even earlier! Normally achieved with deeper profiles whichhave a negative effect on handling, our designers solved this problem 2years ago. They changed the batten distances, the angles and the positions, sothat especially in the maneuver-oriented sails the center of effort could bemoved down while at the same time supporting the big area around theboom. This batten configuration we call the CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT.You will immediately notice it through the X formed by the boom and thebatten enabling remarkably more power and superior control through a widewind range.

3dtechnology100% profile accuracy. Optimum aerodynamic and absolute profile accuracy are core, qualityfeatures for us – 100% accuracy is demanded. This starts during the cutting, where we cut allpanels with a laser. Next, the panels are glued together fold free using profile ribs. Only NORTHSAILS uses this technology to keep tolerances to the absolute minimum. Through this3D.TECHNOLOGY a monocoque body is built up, which exactly corresponds to the final profileand enables problem-free sewing. This guarantees shape… and performance for many yearsto come.

a) Smooth profile 3D.TECHNOLOGY:Perfectly shaped and smooth profiles arenaturally more efficient, producing maximumperformance.

b) Segmented profile:Segmented, squared profiles, which aregenerated through ordinary productionmethods, produce uneven shapes, whichcan cause drag.

a) FLIP ROTATING SYSTEMb) regular RAF Sail

secretseamshapingProvides effortless acceleration and deep power-reserves. Extremely stiff and direct sails, which demand lots of power to get going and even more to be controlled, are a thing of thepast. In this new generation of more elastic profiles, NORTH SAILS leads the way. The 2002models offer unparalleled acceleration, plenty of power-reserves and neutral handling. Anotherbenefit of the elasticity is the comfort level of these sails, especially in choppy water or over-powered conditions. Tests have shown this leads to smoother rig control and higher performance.SECRET.SEAM.SHAPING has been implemented into all 2002 sail models.

fliprotatingsystemEasy batten rotation is a snap. Everyone knows it: the harder the batten snaps during rotation, the more uncomfortable the handling is. Therefore Kai Hopf has developed the FLIP. ROTATING.SYSTEM for all no-cam sails, eliminating the hated snap during rotation. This was made possiblethrough our CONSTANT.DRIVE.CONCEPT which pre-profiles our sails. So our sails alwaysshow profile even without wind pressure enabling the battens to freely rotate behind the mast.

VTS acts like a turbo charger making for improved performance and an extended windrange. Just pull the downhaul -according to the wind strength- until the borderline of the looseleech in the top reaches the "min” or "max” mark – off you go. Our patented VTS SYSTEM isthat easy to read and tune. NORTH SAILS offers you a large trim range and with only one sailsize you are able to cover a wide range of wind conditions. Even top racers like Micah Buzianisand Diada Ruano Moreno rely 100% on the VTS SYSTEM.

boxbattenVery stiff, very light. Draft movement and bad rig control are definitely avoidable. This is why wehave decided to use battens which are a class by themselves. Their stiffness, the 30% decreasedweight due to being hollow, and the high breakage-strength make our BOX.BATTENS the bestyou can get. Plus the thin cross-section improves the aerodynamics compared to tube battens. This is why BOX.BATTENS are extreme in every way: extremely light, extremely stiff, extremelydraft stable, extremely high-performing.

This variety is also our strength, making each singleboom what everybody likes at NORTH SAILS: great in performance, specific in the range ofuse, secure and comfortable. No wonder, that they are one of the most sold booms worldwide.

The front-end plays an essential role regarding comfort and security. It was a big focus pointin the past, and now we can proudly present the most successful front-end on the market. Also the 2002 boom models excel with perfect function, the easy to use clamp system, highstiffness and an optimum fit without slipping on the mast. Despite the tight fit on the mast, the PRO.GRESSION II absorbs shocks very well, enabling a very comfortable and direct righandling.

SQUASH.GRIP®

The secret of the CARBON.WAVE is the construction andthe shape, exclusively developed by full-on wave professionals. A specific bend curve, designed for the demands of wave sailing, guarantees the sailor will have both hands aneven distance from the center of the sail and provides a balanced rig when riding thewaves. Because of the short extension (35 cm), the thin tube diameter remains unchanged allthe way to the rear section of the boom, guaranteeing a solid grip in bottom turns. Theslightly rough surface of the end-piece gives you a firm grip in Duck Tacks and DuckJibes. 100% carbon makes the CARBON.WAVE super stiff and so durable, that even the"juiciest” waves won’t destroy it.

Power Extreme. These days almost all kinds ofhigh performance components in the sports businessare manufactured from carbon. No other materialoffers such an unbeatable strength to weight ratio. So we are using this high-quality raw material in ourbooms in order to achieve extreme stiffness andmaximum power. Only these super stiff booms willtransfer the power 1:1, as its stiffness prevents thebooms from flexing in gusts and thereby distortingthe sail profile.

Attention: the bend, stiffness and weight of all threelines are designed for the use in World Class racing– your rig may feel a bit unusual due to the extremestiffness on your first day. But you will adjust soonand come to rely on the enormous power andresponsiveness the boom will give your rig.

dropshapeBut light weight itself is not enough for an efficient mast. To completely mobilize the power of modern sails, the reflex and bendcharacteristics are also of decisive importance. That’s why we developed a unique mast geometry, designed to get 100% out of anysail. This special geometry can be identified in seconds through the revolutionary DROP.SHAPE, providing a more harmonious bendcurve, a noticable higher draft stability and consequently more performance in the whole wind range.

To identify the perfect mast geometry we use a comprehensive and precise measuring technique which, unlike the classic 3-pointIMCS-measurement, analyses the curve over the entire length of the mast. It clearly shows that traditional mast shapes are too stiffbelow the boom which adversely affects the sail’s performance. For the DROP.SHAPE, the exact diameter is specified over the entiremast, to reduce the stiffness below the boom and to obtain the desired increase in stiffness above the boom, resulting in a very balancedstiffness distribution. This prevents the sail profile from deforming, provides better draft stability, easier handling and greater top speedfor your sail.

Another decisive advantage of the DROP.SHAPE construction is the reduction of the mast diameter to an aerodynamically fully developedsize, which makes any discussion about needle masts old hat for us. And as well as optimizing the stiffness, we increased the wallthickness, so DROP.SHAPE masts are not only light, but also very durable.

mast.technologymore power for all sails

"Never ever!” was not acceptable for our mastengineers, even when our World Cup sailorsmade demands for ever lighter equipment.Especially the freestyle specialists asked for lightermasts, to reduce the overall rig weight, making iteasier to control their rigs during crazy maneuvers.Well, ok! Straight into the laboratory, two years ofdevelopment and well, what do you know! Theunexpected is already in production: VIPER AEROthe world’s first mast below 1 kg! In contrast tonormal carbon masts, the VIPER AERO is manu-factured with very expensive Aerospace carbon, normally used in the Aerospace industry or in theproduction of high quality components for theAmericas Cup. In combination with specific resintypes and the Pre-preg-autoclave-process we areproducing the lightest and most expensive mastthe windsurfing world will ever hold in its hands.

viper technology

The ultimate World Cup technology offersnew dimensions regarding per-formanceand weight. The secret is the computer-controlled resin-carbon fiber ratio aswell as the high compression usedduring the production (up to 10 tons). With the combination of rolling and theAerospace pre-preg technology, theamount of resin is reduced and the useof 100% carbon (75% with the VIPER75) make mast like the VIPER AEROpossible, the world’s lightest mast.

xcellerator technology

XCELLERATOR – stands for acceleration. It’s technical specifications guaranteesensational performance and the polishedfinish attracts everyone’s attention. TheCROSS.CARBON.CONSTRUCTIONmade it possible – a production methodused for all XCELERATOR masts. It allowsus to define and change the rolling angle,to optimise the specifications over theentire mast and to integrate a superstrong, three-dimensional construction fora fast response rate.

sting technology

The story behind the STING is theCARBON.CROSS.WINDING technologywhere the fibers are woven in a way thatprovides high quality construction. Aclever mix of glass and carbon gives theSTING mast a smooth dynamic withabove average durability. The modernshape allows the mast to be used with allsails giving great performance.

The TITANIUM.PROTECTION.SHIELD is the new sensation inmast development, used with the VIPER WAVE and VIPERRACE. A super light titanium shield is wound over the top of thecarbon. This gives the VIPER a thin coat of titanium, that not onlyprotects the carbon structure from nicks, but UV-light and over-heating as well.

The pleasing factor. The fit and the neoprene decide the quality of every wetsuit. To offer youmaximum comfort we developed our own neoprene. It surpasses regular neoprene in terms ofsoftness, stretch-ability and durability. We call it NORTH SAILS SAS DURASTRETCH. It’s extremelystretchy, very lightweight, UV-resistant and has a high carbon content to provide a very comfortableand long lasting fit. To reduce the "cooling out” – effect the SAS DURASTRETCH has a special surface structure, which helps reduce the binding of water molecules to the surface of the suit, and lets the waterrun off faster. Additionally, the surface has excellent abrasion resistance. To provide exceptionalcomfort a special inner lining is used on many of the panels. This improves heat retention, flexibilityand most of all is soft on the skin.

Are you good enough for the new CROSS? Inspired by motocross freestylers we developed a cutting edge suit targeted atthe new generation of radical wave sailors, freestylers and surfers. A unique look, combined with high end materials, cleverlypositioned protectors and first class function make this the suit that all others will be measured against.

Through the use of an extremely short zipper all CROSS suits allow for extreme body rotations and – moves, as the suit remainsextremely flexible. A clever material mix and shaping concept keep the shoulder and knee areas as flexible as possible. Largeprotectors at the knee and shin provide superior protection during the most radical moves.

All CROSS suits are manufactured using the latest technology to guarantee optimum temperature balance and comfort. They arelined with a special Nylon to ensure maximum heat retention.

Our designers invested a huge amount of time this year into the new harness program for 2002. The main focuswas on fitting and comfort. We tried to develop harnesses that had the best possible combinations of pressure distribution, comfort and user friendliness. Many of the details such as patches, strap position and seam position were changed. The patented PRO.LIMIT pin release hook is also new for this season. This hook will get you on the water faster, andyou will waste less time fiddling with your harness. We are proud to present the best harness collection NORTH SAILShas ever had.
