INTRODUCTION

A Planisphere is a star chart, in the form of two adjustable discs that rotate on a common pivot. It canbe adjusted to display the visible stars for any particular time and date. It is an instrument to assist inlearning how to recognise stars and constellations.

— Precautions

Scissors should be handled carefully.

— Step 1 - Accessing the Planisphere document

Note that we provide you with the printouts for a particular latitude, if you need the print out foranother latitude, follow Steps 1 and 2; else go to Step 3.

Please go to the website https://in-the-sky.org/planisphere/

Go to "Select Latitude" and select the latitude closest to your location.

For example: Bangalore's latitude is 12.97°N. You may select the latitude as 10°N or 15°N.

Now click on the 'Download' button.

— Step 2 - Planisphere printout

'Make your own planisphere' document will be displayed.

Save the document.

Open to page 4 and print out pages 4 and 5 of the document.

— Step 3 - Cutting the Printout

Take page 5 and cut along the outer line.

Also cut out the grey area on page 5.

Take page 4 and cut along the outer circle.

— Step 4 - Assembling the Planisphere I

Take page 5 and fold along the dotted lines.

Insert page 4 inside page 5.

Use the board pin to make a hole pin in the centre of page 4 and 5, page 4 already has a smallcircle displaying the centre.

— Step 5- Assembling the Planisphere II

You should now have a hole at the center mark, on both pages 4 and 5.

Now, take one of the halves of the push button (the one with the slightly longer nub) and push thenub through the hole from the back side. the button will hold the back sheet in place and the nubwill protrude out from the front hole.

Now , fix the other half of the button on the nub on the front of the planisphere.

— Step 6 - Reading the Planisphere

Pick the date and hour you want toobserve, say September 5th ,1.30am. Now set the date on the rim ofthe circular disk to the same.

The Planisphere's large oval showsthe whole sky, and the oval's curvededge represents the horizon you'refacing.

The constellations you can see areAndromeda, Cygnus, Aries, Piscesetc

— Troubleshoot

Ensure correct latitude has been entered.

Make sure the Planisphere is pointing to the correct date and time.
