ple. Arm chairs are covered i n turquoise

which complements the color of the espe-

cially-created scroll design in the carpet.

The decor o f the banque t room, open-

ing off the d in ing room and separated

by fo ld ing doors, has the same carpet,

draperies and colors so that when opened

for a large gathering it becomes one

great room seating at least 750 people.

Stage in Banquet Room

The banque t room is equ ipped w i t h a

stage and the very latest in l ight ing and

theatrical equ ipment . Another feature of

this section are the large, recessed, in-

direct l ight ing arrangements. Mult icolor

lights, w i th varying degrees of brightness,

can b e changed w i t h a master switch,

A smaller, private d in ing room is situ-

ated off the lobby. Several other private

rooms, set aside for special functions,

are located in this area. The decor of

these rooms has an intimate feeling, it

is obtained by the selection of panel led

wal l paper and a breakfront, chairs and

servers in F rench provincial cherry. As

in the lobby, these rooms give members

and guests' the feeling of be i ng in a

private iiome.

The covered terrace, accessible from

the bar, d in ing and banquet rooms is

furnished with wrought-iron tables and

chairs for d in ing, light snacks and cock-

tails.

Contemporary Theme

The lower l loor is in a contemporary

theme. In this area, used mostly bv the

golfers, there is the pro shop, locker

rooms, rest rooms, powder room, boot-

black. a men's a n d women's card rooms,

massage rooms, a beauty parlor and

barber shop.

The grill room on this floor features a

distinctive, modern motif. There is empha-

sis on comfort a nd natural l ight ing. The

colors are all correlated in these areas,

(be carpet being in tones of gold, w i th

black and coral accents.

Wa l l and drapery treatments in each

room on tlie lower level, as wel l as

furnishings, fo l low the modern country

c lub trend. F rom each of these rooms,

a person can stroll out onto a lower out-

side terrace. Here, wrought-iron tables

Henaud, a native of Montreal who served

lor six years as bar and food manager

at Castle Harbor in Bermuda. Previous

to his be ing named manager of T a m m y

Brook, he was catering manager at the

Bahamas C C in Nassau. H e was also

wi th the Del l wood C C in New York

Ci ty .

The maitre d' in this type of country

c lub fills a vital role. H e is Pierre di

Bernardi, a boyhood friend of Tambtirelli.

They came from the same town in north-

ern Italy—Saluggia, near Torino in the

Piedmont region.

Maryland-Washington, D. C. Hurry to Catch up on Courses

The Mary laud-National Cap i ta l park

and p lanning commission is tak ing action

to alleviate the shortage of golf courses

in greater Wash ington , D . C . a n d Mary-

land. Construct ion has begun on an 18-

hole county layout in the northwest sec-

tion of Montgomery County . The course

wil l be known as the Northwest Branch

Park G C . A n addit ional n ine is also in

p lann ing at this location, according to

John P. Hewit t , director of parks for the

park and p lann ing commission.

The M N C P F Commiss ion also plans to

begin construction of two 9-hole execu-

tive (par 30} courses in Prince Georges

County in the near future. One wil l be in

the Oxon Hi l l area, the other near Col lege

Park. The commission now operates a

9-hole course in Oxon Bun Park in Prince

Georges County and another in SHgo

Creek Park in Montgomery County , M d .

Society of Go l f Course Architects wi l l be

held Feb. 11-14 in the Belleview Bi l tmore

the Montgomery County revenue authori-

ty, h ad 36,000 rounds of golf p layed on

it dur ing its first year of operation. In-

come after expenses and encumbrances

( including debt service in the amoun t of

$17,763.00) was $1,197.92.

State Ha s 91 Courses

As of Nov. I , 1962, Mary land had a

total of 91 golf courses in play. O f these,

83 are regulation length and 8 are Par-3

layouts. A further study of the state's

golfing facilities reveals that there are 26

9-hole layouts and 57 18-hole operations

in the fo l lowing categories: 5 5 private

clubs, 14 semi-private, and 14 mun ic ipa l .

O f the 8 Par-3's in p lay in Mary land , four

arc semi-private, three are private and

one is a munic ipa l .

New facilities open ing in Mary land dur-

ing 1962 were the first 9 of a p lanned 18

at the Tart tall on C C , Fort Wash ing ton ,

powder C C , Laurel ; a 9-hole semi-private

operation at Cumber land and a new 18-

hole replacement course for Five Farms

C C in Baltimore.

Accord ing to National Co i f Foundat ion

statistics, the combined areas of the Dis-

trict of Co lumb ia and Man-land now have

one course for every 42,468 persons. To-

tal golf ing facilities in the nation as of

Nov. 1, 1962, were 7070 courses (6521

are regulat ion length and 549, Par-3's).

The national average is one golf course

for each 25,376 persons.

Mary land and the District of Colum-

bia rank 49th among the states in ratio

of golf courses to populat ion. On ly Alas-

ka has fewer courses per capita.

The ten leading states in new golf

course openings in 1962, excluding Par-3

courses, were Florida 24, California 23,

New York 22, Pennsylvania 19, Texas 18,

Massachusetts 13, A labama 11, and Ohio,

South Carol ina and Virginia — each 10.

P G A C h a n g e s C lass i f i ca t ions

At the 1962 meeting of the PGA in

Palm Beach, Fla., delegates voted to elim-

inate the Class D classification of assist-

ants, substituting a new one, Class Junior

A. Class C also was el iminated and Class

B was expanded to take in former Class

C members. Init iation fees for Class A

and B members were increased from $25

to $100 and those for Class A Juniors

from $10 to $50.
