Conservation Project
Page 02
Overview: In partial fulfilment of the “Conservation Project” module, the class group will undertake a fieldtrip to observe and appraise examples of the Irish built heritage and adjudicate on any contemporary building interventions. Four specific sites/buildings have been selected from various eras of Irish History. The intention is that each site/building will introduce the student to a diverse level of complexity in terms conservation, consolidation and indeed refurbishment.
Aim of the Project: The aim of this field trip ios to appraise and offer and informed visual opinion of the success, or lack of, the conservation works which were undertaken at each of the buildings/sites.
Project objectives: To understand the process of constructing an “informed” point of view through visual observation and reflection.

Fota House is a magnificent Regency period house with formal gardens
and arboretum. It was originally built by the Smith-Barry family as a
hunting lodge. It started off as a modest 2-storey building, but was
extended and redesigned in the 1820′s when John Smith-Barry made it
his permanent residence.

Lady with Ringlets
This marble bust dates from about
the 1830s and gives us an insight into
the elaborate hairstyles of the
period, with a centre parting, soft
ringlets to frame the face and a neat
bun at the back of the head called an
Apollo Knot.

Paired Ionic columns in a rich yellow scagliola, a
simulated marble produced from marble chips,
give a strong architectural character to the space:
the Smith-Barry crest, previously seen on the
parapet of the portico, is executed in plaster
above the Ionic capitals of the central pillars

of the tour. Raw meat and game were kept in the
wet larder, octagonal in shape. In the middle of
the room is a carousel for hanging game. Lead
lined boxes were once used for salting meat. The
kitchen is furnished with the equipment of the
time--a charcoal stove, ranges, ovens, and boilers,
as well as pots and pans. A housekeeper's room, a
still room, and storage rooms were all part of the
"downstairs" that made the house function
