MATADOR INSTITUTE OF LEADERSHIP ENGAGEMENT
2
CASNR MILE PROGRAM
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach
me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."
At Texas Tech University, the College of Agricultural
Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) has begun an
innovative program to engage promising young adults with
outstanding leaders in agricultural policy, natural resources
conservation, industry relations, and entrepreneurship.
In an effort to address the increasing need for emerging
leaders to fully understand the diverse issues, challenges,
and opportunities affecting agriculture and rural America,
the Matador Institute of Leadership Engagement (MILE)
Program was designed to give a select group of CASNR
undergraduate students a unique, high-impact learning
experience. Industry partners and private individuals
interested in becoming involved in this exciting new program
will be given internship-hosting opportunities.
As policy decisions that shape the future of agriculture are
made, there is a need for strong, young leaders who can
communicate to a variety of audiences and make positive
contributions to society.
A broad understanding of these challenges comes through
first-hand experience and exposure to key issues impacting
the local, state, and national agriculture industry and the
rural communities it supports. The MILE Program can make
a positive impact by creating a pipeline of trained, young
leaders who are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and
understanding of the issues facing the industry and its
diverse components.

• The cohort selection process seeks to ensure each
CASNR academic department is represented.
• On- and off-campus workshops and tours are a key
focus of the MILE Program and give participants
exposure to the diverse issues affecting agriculture
and public policy.
• When the Texas Legislature is in session, each cohort
travels to Austin to meet with state policy makers.
• Every MILE cohort spends a week in
Washington, D.C. meeting with government agencies
and industry representatives.
• Each cohort is made up of 14 selected students that represent each CASNR undergraduate
academic department.

MILE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
This unique, high-impact learning experience for
undergraduate students in Texas Tech University’s
College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
is developing a pipeline of well-rounded advocates
who understand the diverse agriculture industry at the
regional, state, and federal levels. The MILE Program is
off to a good start, but resources are needed to make
the short-term and long-term goals of this program a
reality. For each three-semester cohort, approximately
$10,000 per student is needed for program expenses,
including travel, regional field tours, meals, speakers,
curriculum resources, professional development
activities, and staffing. MILE students also participate
in an internship experience, presenting additional
funding opportunities for organizations and companies
interested in investing in a MILE student intern.
Support the students who are going the extra MILE
for agriculture.
In addition to participation in on- and off-campus workshops, tours, and professional development
training, students in the MILE Program are also required to participate in an internship. The internship
program hopes to develop mutually beneficial relationships between our student MILE members and
companies and organizations within the agriculture industry.

• Companies/organizations host a MILE student during a semester or summer internship.
• The MILE Advisory Committee will assign each student to an internship host following selection of the MILE cohort.
• Students in the MILE Program represent each of the unique academic departments within CASNR. Special consideration
will be taken by the MILE Advisory Committee when placing students in each internship environment based on the career
goals of the student and the needs of the internship host.
• An investment of a $10,000 sponsorship for two years will cover MILE program expenses throughout the student’s three-
semester cohort. The internship host will have the opportunity to hire the intern upon graduation.
• For internships outside of the Lubbock area that require relocation of the student, we request the internship host cover
housing costs during the length of the internship.
• No additional compensation of the student is expected.
I n t e r n s h i p H o s t B e n e f i t s
• Internship hosts will benefit from an intern who is receiving high quality leadership, professional development, and
communications training through the MILE Program.
• MILE internship hosts can rely on a consistent source of quality, knowledgeable students to work in their organizations.
S t u d e n t B e n e f i t s
• Students will gain real-world experience while developing valuable relationships with career mentors.
• Internships often provide students with career opportunities following graduation.
