From the canals of Amsterdam to the belfry of Bruges, you’ll discover the best of the Netherlands and Belgium. Stroll through colorful acres of tulips at Keukenhof Gardens to get a sense of the Netherlands’ extraordinary connection to these blooms. Then visit the 19 UNESCO-designated windmills of Kinderdijk to better understand how these mighty structures have been used to protect the Low Country from ever-rising water levels for hundreds of years.

Exclusive for NSCDA travelers are visits to private gardens and an exclusive “Morning with the Masters” visit to the Hermitage Amsterdam. We will have the chance to see thirty massive 17th-century group portraits from impressive collections normally on display at the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum–all under the same roof for the very first time.

Additional exclusive visits include the private garden of Jacqueline van der Kloet, one of the premiere bulb designers in the world, as well

as Ruben’s exquisite Villa and gardens along with a day that includes both Bruges and Ghent as well as picture-perfect villages of Veere, Hoorn and Enkhuizen, and the enchanting outdoor Zuiderzee Museum. Those who wish to step back in time may visit historic villages

and medieval city centers will be in heaven. Art lovers will enjoy guided museum visits, while garden lovers will find a host of wonders with springtime blossoms.

Keukenhof is said to be the world’s largest and most famous flower garden, a bold declaration that lives up to the hype. Keukenhof Gardens, once the country estate of Countess Jacoba van Beieren, who owned the grounds in the 15th century. Keukenhof, which means “kitchen garden,” was where the countess once cultivated herbs. The herbs long ago made way for the waves of color in today’s creatively landscaped tulip gardens.

Exclusive for NSCDA travelers is a visit to Jacqueline van der Kloet’s personal garden, The Tea Garden. One has only to experience Jacqueline van der Kloet’s personal garden, to understand why she is known as one of the premiere bulb designers in the world. Large sweeps of narcissus and yellow tulips as the lead players and the majestic Fritillaria imperialis are dotted about; Dames will feel as if they are being transported to a spring wonderland.

Haarlem was once a major North Sea trading port surrounded by a defensive wall, it retains its medieval character of cobblestone streets and gabled houses. It’s the center of a major flower-bulb-growing district, and famous for its outlying tulip fields, art museums and hofjes (almshouses built around leafy courtyards).

Today offers you a chance to discover The Netherlands’ maritime history, with visits to two historic towns linked to the Dutch East India Company (which dominated Europe’s trade with Asia for centuries), and to learn a little about the daily lives of the seafaring Dutch in the 19th century. The tip of South America—Cape Horn—is actually a misspelling of “Hoorn,” which tells you a lot about the town of Hoorn and its seafaring past. The swash-buckling derring-do of Dutch explorers comes to life today on a guided walking tour of this historic town. Later, leave the modern world far behind during a visit to a re-created 19th-century Dutch village.

APRIL 19 - DAY 5: NIJMEGENFor your choice of excursions today, you can visit the Kröller-Müller Museum, which is home to 97 works by native son Vincent Van Gogh, as well as other notable artists and sculptors. Or enjoy a bike ride in the Hoge Veluwe National Park.

It may be the diamond capital of the world, but Antwerp is also known for a number of other sought-after cultural gems, including Golden Age art. Antwerp is lively and historic, lovely and legend-filled. Visit Antwerp’s striking Cathedral of Our Lady, with its UNESCO-designated belfry and its historic surroundings.

A journey to Ruben’s House and Gardens is included for NSCDA travelers. Behind the massive oak gate, a world of rich, early 17th century tranquillity is waiting. The garden displays a profusion of flowers and fruits, all known in the 17th century. Three more features have a specific charm: the beautiful wooden tunnel in renaissance style covered with roses, clematis and honeysuckle, the authentic, gardener’s lodge with its herb square and an 18th century round basin with a small orchard.
