A dedicated and motivated workforce is one of the pillars that contribute to a company’s success and its reputation. As long ago as 1943, the behavioral psychologist Abraham Maslow suggested in “A Theory of Human Motivation” that belongingness is a major source of motivation. Other theories also posit the need to belong as a fundamental psychological motivation. Maslow’s colleagues Roy Baumeister and Mark Leary went as far as to suggest that much of what human beings do is done in the service of belongingness. The desire is universal: it can be found across all cultures.

The need to belong is quite evident in the workplace. Employees want to fit in, they seek approval and acceptance from their colleagues and leaders. Only when they find fulfillment in this quest will they feel connected to their work and workplace, and as a result be happy to stay with the company. Nurturing a sense of engagement and belongingness e.g. by letting our employees know that what they do matters, recognizing their accomplishments and encouraging camaraderie is therefore an important commitment we make to each other across the organization.

For 30 years now, connections magazine has been an important pillar of Oiltanking’s toolkit to inform, motivate, and entertain our colleagues and clients around the world. A publication rhythm of three issues

a year became established over time. With the Digital Age and so many new ways for people to stay abreast of what is going on, we have recently re-evaluated the mix of communication tools available to us these days and decided to keep the tradition of a printed magazine, be it at a reduced rhythm of two issues a year, while at the same time working more through social media and our intranet connect as means to ensure that we reach our readers even more effectively going forward.

In this issue, you will find many different examples of belongingness – from colleagues who have been with the company for many years, to people who show their sense of belonging through art projects. All of them essentially tell us the same thing: to belong is to matter and a sense of belongingness is adding meaning to life.

We hope you enjoy this issue – and that it helps to enhance your sense of belonging to the Oiltanking community!

As the Chinese economy continues its rapid development, the number of fire-related incidents is also on the rise. The latest data shows that a total of 312,000 fires occurred in China in 2016, resulting in 1,582 fatalities, 1,065 civilian injuries, and direct damages of RMB 3.72 billion (roughly 480 million euros). On average, there were round about 850 fires per day.

As a leading provider of storage and transportation solutions for petroleum products, chemicals, and gases, Oiltanking is well aware of the consequences and damage that can be caused by a fire. Which is why all kinds of measures have been taken to ensure the highest safety standards at all times during operations, and to quickly contain

damage in the event of an emergency at the terminals. Oiltanking China Co. Ltd. – the regional representative office in Shanghai, which provides in-house consultation to terminals in matters of finance, human resources and business development, went one step further. It upgraded firefighting knowledge at the workplace with a two-day workshop.

On December 26, 2017, the colleagues at the Shanghai office first had a short classroom-based workshop to enhance their understanding of fire detection systems, firefighting equipment, and self-preservation measures during fire evacuation. This was followed by a firefighting evacuation drill on January 18, 2018, led by their office

building’s firefighting officer.

Thanks to the two days of fire safety and awareness training, all colleagues at the Shanghai office are now better prepared to prevent fires and to stay safe in the unfortunate event of a fire.

It has been a truly fulfilling year for Oiltanking in the Asia Pacific region, with so much going on – from the rapid development of the business to the roll-out of the new software FAME, which went live in January 2018, to the successful implementation of the Functional Hub (HR, Finance, IT).

In the past, Oiltanking’s sister companies Mabanaft, Bomin and Skytanking had their offices downtown at UE Square, while Oiltanking was located at the other end of Singapore on Jurong Island. The idea of a new, united office was born as part of Project Spring. From the start, there was an emphasis on the potential for increasing the quality of the corporate branding and leveraging collaboration between the companies.

Jerlyn Tan, Vice President Corporate Affairs Oiltanking Asia Pacific, was tasked with finding a new home for all the entities to be united under one roof. Around 35 office units were viewed and carefully scrutinized, with Suntec City eventually emerging as the best choice for a variety of reasons. The selection of the location was followed by eight busy months of planning, designing, renovating, before the actual move-in. The year 2017 ended with an internal office-opening party on December 8, with many colleagues from Jurong Island attending to support and witness this exciting milestone.

“The new office uniting all Marquard & Bahls's business units will further encourage ties and collaborations among the colleagues,” says Douglas van der Wiel, President Oiltanking Asia Pacific.

2017 ended on a high note with the opening of the new downtown office in Suntec City, Singapore, which unites Oiltanking and its sister companies Bomin, Mabanaft and Skytanking under a shared roof.

A recent two-day firefighting workshop has left colleagues at Oiltanking’s regional representative office in Shanghai, China, well-prepared for emergencies.

Huizhou Daya Bay Oiltanking Petrochemical Public Jetty Company Ltd. (OTPPJ), was founded in 2008 and went online in 2010 under the management of Oiltanking Daya Bay Co. Ltd (OTDB). The current Operation and Management (O&M) contract, signed for five years, became effective on January 1, 2013. In early 2017, with the nearing expiry date in mind, Oiltanking Daya Bay initiated negotiations for a contract renewal. At first its venture partner Huizhou Dayawan Petrochemical Industrial Park Investment Co., Ltd (DPIP) appeared fairly ambivalent about an extension. DPIP believes that the national policy is likely to change, and that state-owned property will be managed centrally, so it proposed a mere one-year extension. But because Oiltanking sees growth potential at the location, our colleagues embraced

every opportunity to convince DPIP of the positive effects and benefits of a long-term contract. To accelerate the process, the Oiltanking China management team stood by and even visited DPIP together with the Daya Bay team to ensure every

opportunity had been seized. The convincing arguments and sustained efforts finally won over DPIP as well as local government representatives. The ten-year O&M contract extension signed on December 29, 2017, ensured a strategically auspicious start to 2018.

In early 2017 Oiltanking Daya Bay entered into negotiations on two prestigious projects. Thanks to the colleagues’ diligence and perseverance, the terminal will reap the rewards in 2018 and beyond.

Persistence pays off The successful note on which the year had ended for Oiltanking Daya Bay continued when it won LG Chemical Huizhou Petrochemical Co. Ltd (LG) as a new, long-term key client. Oiltanking Daya Bay will provide LG with a 4,000 cbm tank and construct a new 2,300 meter pipeline-to-store in order to feed LG’s product styrene monomer. The 15-year storage service contract was signed on January 3, 2018, again preceded by months of talks that had begun in 2017. Many rounds of detailed and arduous negotiations followed, again with the support of colleagues at Oiltanking China. The results underscore the value of the motto “stronger

together”: the greater the team’s concerted efforts, the bigger the rewards. The contract will definitely improve Oiltanking Daya Bay’s income structure and optimize the proportion of its contracts’ durations (short-term/long-term). In the long run, the cooperation with LG will also lay the foundation for Daya Bay’s Phase IV expansion. Talks are already underway regarding the construction of a spherical tank required by LG. What’s more, in Phase IV Daya Bay will be welcoming another two new clients who will also require spherical tanks. So the future looks bright for Oiltanking Daya Bay!

TALKING BUSINESS Julio Tellechea, COO Marquard & Bahls, visited Oiltanking Daya Bay to discuss development options with local government

A STRONG PERFORMANCE Colleagues from the commercial department gave

their all to advance the project

The year 2018 started with two additional highlights for the Oiltanking terminals in China. Oiltanking Daya Bay entered a 3-year storage contract to provide 9,000 cbm tank with one of China's national oil giants – CNOOC. On the other hand, Oiltanking Nanjing entered into a 15-year tank storage agreement with its existing client Chengzhi. To cater to the clients’ needs, a new 40,000 cbm tank will be built and another tank of the same

capacity modified. Furthermore, the jetty requires an infrastructure upgrade to accommodate the incremental throughput of up to 880,000 mt/year. Both long-term agreements will substantially increase the terminals’ revenues and provide opportunities for further expanding their facilities, while the short-term agreement of Daya Bay opened a new chapter by going into business with a major state-owned enterprise.

Carriers (VLGC’s) as well as barges for shipping the product out to INEOS' plants. An automated RTC loading facility for butane deliveries into Cologne by rail ensures that the highest standards of safety and operation will be met on this project.

The next steps of the tank project include:1. Drilling of 680 piles for tank foundations 2. Pouring of concrete for the pile heads and tank slab3. Pouring of the concrete for the outer tank wall

Items such as the inner tank, tank roof, piping, equipment etc. will be completed in the course of 2018 and 2019

The construction of a new seagoing jetty (finger pier) in the dock began in December 2017 and is scheduled for commissioning at the end of 2018, when it will receive the first VLGC vessels for board-to-board operations.

In order to successfully complete a project of this size, OTAGT has appointed a dedicated project team. The construction phase will necessitate the creation of a significant number of temporary positions; at its peak, approximately 300-400 people will be working on the site! To handle the incremental volumes and operate the new installation, OTAGT will be strengthened with new colleagues. In addition, special security and safety measures have been taken to ensure a safe project:

• the construction site has been completely fenced off from the existing OTAGT operations to create a safe "greenfield"area• thisgreenfieldareahasitsownsecurityorganization• theOTAGTProjectTeamhastwoHSSEmanagers assigned to the project• theappointedgeneralcontractorhashisownsafety programandsafetycrewdeployedatthesite

One of Oiltanking’s strategic objectives is to further grow its gas footprint. This project specifically ensures a further penetration of the LPG market, propelling OTAGT to become the largest commercial LPG terminal in the ARA region, and hence the largest butane/LPG hub. And, if needed, OTAGT still has space available for future expansions of its storage capacity.

E U R O P E

In July 2016, Oiltanking officially acquired Antwerp Gas Terminal. The huge expansion potential of Oiltanking AGT (OTAGT) was soon realized by signing a contract with INEOS in March 2017 to build the world’s largest fully refrigerated butane tank. The new tank with an operational capacity of 135,000 cbm will be commissioned in 2019, and will be used to import refrigerated butane for INEOS’ cracker complex in Cologne, Germany. From OTAGT, the

butane will be loaded onto barges and rail tank cars to supply the Cologne cracker plant.

The ground-breaking ceremony on November 13, 2017 marked the beginning of a project whose scope goes far beyond the construction of the tank. The project also includes a new seagoing jetty with four vessel positions to simultaneously handle product receipt from Very Large Gas

The event was organized to support the AD6** team, which raises money for the KWF* Cancer foundation in the Netherlands. The minimum cycling time was one hour, but diehard cyclists such as Sander Post and his colleague Dammy Krieckaart, both operators, went the full four hours, true to the AD6 credo “Giving up is not an option”.

Several sporting events are also planned for 2018, including the Ride for the Roses spinning event, which was already a great success in 2017 and will be held in Terneuzen for the second time in June 2018.

Oiltanking had pledged € 10 for each hour cycled, and thanks to their motivation and perseverance, the Fun & Fit team raised a total of € 1,280. “We are quite proud of ourselves! On the one hand, because we were able to do our part for a good cause. And on the other hand, we demonstrated our commitment to exercise and getting fit, and set a good example for our colleagues whom we hope to motivate to do the same,” said Patricia de Theije (HSSE Manager), referring to the Fun & Fit campaign that Oiltanking Terneuzen initiated in 2016 to improve the well-being of the employees and stimulate a happy and healthy work environment. The Fun & Fit team is in charge of its implementation.

DOW Chemicals and Oiltanking have been loyal business partners in Terneuzen ever since Oiltanking opened its facility here in 2005. A recent capacity expansion at the DOW Chemicals plant in Terneuzen resulted in a need for additional storage capacity and related logistics infrastructure. As their off-site storage provider, Oiltanking proved to be the best option for meeting this demand.

The launch of several new grades of polyols, a key ingredient in the flex-foam industry, increased the demand for capacity in separate tanks. Three tanks of 1,000 cbm each, formerly used to store Latex, are being converted and an extra jetty line is being installed. To accommodate the additional flow of rail cars and trucks, a completely new loading rack is being constructed. This necessitates the construction of an additional rail track, and of two new truck-weighing bridges underneath the new loading rack to ensure efficient handling.

The Oiltanking Terneuzen project team has been working flat out to have the project operational by the beginning of July 2018. The team is confident they will succeed, though the months ahead are bound to be challenging. The team has done very well on the safety front as well, with no construction-related incidents to date.

Meanwhile, DOW Chemicals is already preparing for another potential investment at its own site in Terneuzen. For Oiltanking as their partner of so many years, this is bound to be good news as well: More business in Terneuzen is good for everyone at the location.

S P O R T S

To accommodate the demand of its client DOW Chemicals for new grades of polyols, Oiltanking Terneuzen in the Netherlands, began converting three of its tanks and building the associated logistics infrastructure in the summer of 2017.

we look at key success factors and a company culture that we believe differentiate us from others in the market. These we will protect and foster. In order to maximize the potential of our global brand we aim to achieve consistency throughout our systems by putting extra effort into increasing the robustness of our core processes, in areas such as operations, HSSE, engineering, project management, finance, HR, IT and procurement. As a result these and other functions no longer only work together within their terminal organizations, but across organizations and regions. This definitely requires some effort on the part of our teams in the organization as they adapt to these new ways of working together.

What are the opportunities for Oiltanking and where do they lie?

Daan: We have truly grown into a company with a worldwide footprint and organization, as well as a well-recognized global brand. I’m confident that we will open up a lot of opportunities if we are able to further combine and leverage that potential. For instance, within our core processes via the A&O community or in new emerging markets, products and business models.Koen: We see continued growth opportunities especially in the emerging markets. We have set up good teams there; they are very well-positioned and well-equipped to assess the risk-versus-rewards balance of several opportunities that we are pursuing. We believe that the execution of our refrigerated gas strategy puts us in a good place to capture business in that growing market segment as well. So our growth will continue, while at the same time we are making the business and organization more robust. We are launching several innovation initiatives this year and believe we have lots of potential to improve and leverage efficiency gains in our existing business. In that same

context we will also focus on exploring opportunities in new market segments adjacent to our core business such as pipelines or inland distribution infrastructure in the hinterlands of our marine facilities in places like India and Africa.

What challenges do you see ahead for Oiltanking, and how can they be tackled?

Daan: We have launched quite a number of initiatives in our organization that represent an additional workload or changes to the way we work. I strongly believe in each one of them but realize that their execution can be challenging. However, if we prioritize them and properly equip ourselves with the right skill set and ensuring ownership, I am sure we can internalize them as part of our day to day work flow.Koen: We are in a consolidation phase, making sure that ongoing initiatives and projects aimed at strengthening our organization and core processes are well received in the business. Our traditional petroleum markets are going through turbulent times, due to factors like backwardation, overcapacity in some hub locations, and the much talked-about energy transition which is happening around us. We are focused on assessing the changed market conditions such that we can adapt, get ready to tackle these challenges and, who knows, perhaps even carve out opportunities for Oiltanking in these interesting times.

MANAGING DIRECTORSSince January 2015, Oiltanking is under a joint leadership consisting of Koen

Verniers and Daan Vos, each with their own geographic areas of responsibility. Three years ago, we first introduced Koen and Daan to you (connections Vol. 27/1) – now we’ve revisited them to ask about their experiences to date, their

connections: You’ve been co-managing the business for three years now. How do you coordinate with each other?

Daan: The structure of both having a geographic business focus allows for relatively more focus for the respective regions and at the same time provides opportunity for best business practice sharing between them. The overarching joint focus that we have on key themes like HSSE, HR, Group Strategy and Finance necessitates a very close alignment. All this makes a successful teamwork essential and the key to this is frequent, relevant communication and discussions, and to not shy away from the more difficult topics while also making sure you have a good laugh together.Koen: From the outset, we found we had very similar ideas about what we believe is important in our business, what we think to be the key success factors of our company, and what direction we want to steer it in. Both of us prefer to work in teams, not just between the two of us, but also with the leadership in

the corporate center and our regional teams. Although our time is often limited and our agendas are challenging, we have become so accustomed to each other's pace, preferences, and strengths that it often takes very few words to pass the ball to each other as we work through the issues at hand.

Has Oiltanking changed – especially in the three years since you took on its management?Daan: I realize that the perceived changes will differ from one colleague to the next. But as I see it, Oiltanking has been constantly evolving over time, and we will have to continue to do so if we are to remain independent and maintain our strong position in the global marketplace. It is however important that we don't just adapt to changes, but that we instead proactively set a direction we want to go in and then organize ourselves accordingly. This will better enable us to weather the dynamic world around us.Koen: To determine this direction

the sea by jumping into it fully naked. In the weeks that followed, our surprise grew even further, as it turns out that there is no water temperatures too cold for these bathing enthusiasts. They continued their ocean-swimming routine well into December and the New Year, when water temperatures were clearly heading towards the zero centigrade Celsius limit. We wondered if this itself was the formula for true happiness? But no … there is more to it.

One remarkable thing that is immediately noticed by every newcomer to Copenhagen is the residents’ passionate love affair with the bicycle. Half of all commutes in Copenhagen involve biking. Come wind, rain, snow or ice, the people of Copenhagen love their daily ride to work. Bicycles range from heavy-duty vehicles that can accommodate up to four children in a trailer, to slickly designed smart bikes driven by business people on their way to the office, to high-end racing bikes pedaled by Tour de France team lookalikes. As a result, traffic jams are not limited to the roads, but can also occur in the bike lanes. Many of my colleagues bike to work – personally, I am still getting used to the year-round weather

aspect of this idea. However, I have plans for the forthcoming spring and summer seasons.

Copenhagen is also a great place to enjoy all sorts of urban culture. Danish design, always a winning combination of function and beauty, can be admired everywhere in daily life. The city is alive with cultural offerings ranging from fine arts exhibitions, to thespian delights, to rollercoaster rides at the Tivoli amusement park, through to the alternative way of life practiced by the free state of Christiania. Coming from Hamburg, it is also extremely comforting that water is present almost everywhere in the city since large parts of Copenhagen were built on several islands. Last but not least, the food is truly remarkable.

When I was asked to move to Denmark, I was pretty sure I already knew what lay ahead of me – after all, I had spent my childhood close to the Danish border. I was in for long beaches, cold and wet weather (seemingly year-round, much as in Hamburg), dark winter nights and long, bright summer evenings, hanging out with some of the happiest people in the world (according to the World Happiness Report), as well as Danish design, licorice

in every shape and form, Danish hot dogs and Danish beer.

In fact, when my family and I arrived in Copenhagen last August, the weather was exceptionally nice! The days were still long enough to enjoy the beaches that surround Copenhagen to the north and south. The waters of the Baltic Sea had already cooled down significantly, so we were rather surprised to see many people still enjoying

When a vessel calls on an Oiltanking terminal, many procedures are necessary to ensure a successful handling process. However, before Oiltanking colleagues can take action and actually start operations, one thing has to touch down on Oiltanking’s facilities first: a “monkey’s fist” or “monkey paw,” a type of knot so named because it looks like a small primate’s clenched fist. The knot is tied at the end of the rope, or line, which is passed from the arriving vessel to the Oiltanking jetty. The monkey’s fist serves as a weight, making it easier to throw the rope.

Historically, a monkey’s fist was first used by sailors to pass lines between ships or between a ship and the shore. In the 1800s the knot was also frequently used as a combat tool in battles.

In most cases, however, the monkey's fist is used as the weight in a heaving line, with the monkey's fist on one end and an eye splice or bowline on the other. After lining a lightweight feeder line to the bowline, a weighted heaving

line is strung between the ship

and the dock. The other end of the

lightweight line being attached to a heavier-

weight line allows it to be drawn towards the jetty, which helps the

mooring crew. The crew can then safely pull the mooring ropes ashore in order to firmly secure the vessel prior to the commencement of operations.

The knot must never be tied around a weight. This would be poor seamanship as the weight could cause harm on the receiving end. In our case, the harmed party would most likely be an Oiltanking colleague.

Today, this extraordinary knot is seen in a profusion of applications ranging from rock climbing and skydiving to a pair of classic cufflinks commonly known as silk knots.

AMALIENBORG CASTLE Constructed in the 1700s, it is the home of Denmark’s royal

family, who represent Europe’s oldest monarchy and are

immensely popular with the Danish population

And, yes, you’ll find hot dogs and beer and licorice in every imaginable shape and form (even as ice cream) – but there is so much more to Danish cooking and the way that food is truly enjoyed. Just as the Danes have a truly unique way of valuing and cherishing the good life while maintaining a relaxed view of life in general. This is probably one of the biggest reasons that Denmark is one of the happiest nations in the world.

So, is Copenhagen the way we had pictured our stay in Denmark? Probably not entirely. As soon as you live in a place permanently instead of as a mere visitor, you will always find the details of life a bit different from what you had imagined. But it’s exciting to be in a place where happiness is a way of life and is derived from many small things that make up the great enjoyment that life can be. As a family we have only just embarked on this great adventure and we already look forward to increasingly “going native” (although winter baths in the Baltic Sea are not anywhere near the top of our list – yet)!

Three years of logistical challenges have finally culminated in a new tank farm on Turkey’s Aegean seacoast. The Refinery Tank Farm built for the STAR Refinery by IOT-VITO symbolises not just the herculean efforts put in by the team, but also the memories associated with it.

When IOT landed the project late in 2014, our colleagues were excited to embark on this challenging journey. In early 2015, all hands came on deck to tackle the task. A workforce of close to 1,000 workers at its peak, 60 percent of them Indians, upped sticks and moved to a new country and culture, embracing the challenge of adapting to a new geography, climate, and local factors.

Turkey was warm and welcomed them with open arms. Surprisingly, their respective languages proved helpful in forming bonds. While the Turkish language sounds completely different, it has around 3,000 words in common with Urdu, a language widely spoken in India (akin to an English speaker listening to German and finding similar-sounding words like Markt (Market) and Haus (house)).

As the extended IOT family bonded over work and a common goal, it grew stronger with each passing day. The highlight of our colleagues’ stay in Izmir and Aliaga

was the cultural integration they were able to achieve. They interacted with the locals, forming new friendships through

shared, intercultural activities such as cricket and soccer matches. Turkish colleagues joined their new Indian co-workers in observing Indian customs, so that everyone – both Indian and Turkish quarters alike – enthusiastically celebrated and participated in Indian festivals like Navratri, Holi and Diwali as well as Turkish holidays like Democracy and National Unity Day, Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, and various other “bayrams”.

Our global family of Indo-Turkish talent also built bridges to the local community with various initiatives. Some centred on local schools, helping to ensure that the local schoolchildren remained motivated to attend school by providing amenities like sports equipment, floor-cleaning machines and learning aids. As our colleagues prepare to leave Turkey, they are filled with gratitude for the memories they have created and the satisfaction of a good job well done – living the IOT core values and translating them into steel and success for IOT’s clients.

Gujra near the Raipur Common User Terminal is the epitome of a village in the Indian hinterland. It grapples with its fair share of challenges, including limited power supply, poor connectivity, and economic disadvantages compared with urban centers. However, none of this deters the bright students in the community school from pursuing an education. And, as their neighbor, the Raipur Terminal takes a keen interest in their educational requirements.

Recently, our colleagues at the terminal acquired new computers better suited for their needs, and began phasing out the old equipment – which, albeit used, was still perfectly functional in many cases. One option would have been to resell or recycle them, but the team was looking to make a difference, not money.

The opportunity to really make a difference was found right nearby, at a community school with a senior class of 300 students, who will soon be enrolling in college, where computers are part of the curriculum. However, in most cases personal computers are a luxury far beyond their parents’ means. Having a functional computer classroom at the school would give them a basic understanding and good head-start with computers.

And so, eight computers in working condition were assembled and delivered to the school. A classroom

was redecorated and equipped with electricity for the purpose, and computer furniture provided by IOT. On the day the classroom was inaugurated, hundreds of curious students queued up to see what all the fuss was about. Some of the students saw a computer for the first time ever, and seeing their names printed on the screen or watching a flower being drawn with Paintbrush further fueled their curiosity. The walls of the classroom have now been decorated with shortcut

commands like Cut, Copy, Paste to help children learn and remember basic operations on the computer.

A reliable electricity supply may still be a thing of the future for Gujra. However, its children have seen another dream come true. Computers that powered the industries around their village now belong to them. Time will tell what opportunities this opens up for the students. In any case, our colleagues at the Raipur terminal feel pleased and privileged to be a part of their journey.

After completing a challenging EPC project in Turkey, colleagues at IOT are now returning to India with fond memories of the Turkish people and countryside in their hearts. And if home is indeed where the heart is, they are now lucky enough to call two countries ‘home’.

I Belong HereStudies show that a sense of “belongingness” at their workplace makes people feel secure and boosts employee engagement. So belongingness is one key to a culture of high performance. Below, we introduce four colleagues from Colombia, one of the newer sites in the Oiltanking network, who already feel they are 100 percent “Oiltankers.” But what does the term actually mean for them?

Out of sight, out of mind? Fortunately, this is not at all true for Rudy Pot, who had been working as an operator on one of the rail & road teams at Oiltanking Stolthaven Antwerp for five years when doctors detected tumor cells in his brain in 2012. Since then he has undergone numerous surgeries and still suffers a lot of headaches. Twice a week, he receives medical treatment at an outpatient center whose facilities includes a creative room – which is where Rudy discovered that painting helps relieve his pain. Since he began experimenting with brushes three years ago, only the occasional paint splotch gave a clue to his artistic side.Rudy takes his inspiration from things that set him at ease and give him satisfaction. This can be anything from a beautiful picture in a magazine to experiencing nature first-

hand on a walk in the woods, where he often finds a peaceful view that he captures with his camera. Later on, he uses these motifs for his paintings, for which he prefers to use acrylic paints. Encouraged by his creative therapist, Rudy revealed his creative streak to a wider audience in a big exhibition with 35 of his paintings at his outpatient care center on October 20, 2017. Needless to say, some colleagues from the terminal attended the event. They even bought two of the paintings and found them a special place in the company’s lunch area – a gesture that ought to motivate and encourage Rudy further while also showing the sense of solidarity and affection that his colleagues still have for him. Until he returns to work, at least his paintings will be at the terminal with them.

Rudy Pot, an operator on one of the rail & road teams at Oiltanking Stolthaven Antwerp, has cancer and cannot work alongside his colleagues for the time being. But thanks to creative therapy, he is more than ever intertwined with the company.

Cecelia Webber, an American multidisciplinary artist, uses artistic nudity to explore how people understand themselves in relation to their perceived realities. By manipulating imagery and form, she seeks to convey a more positive idea of the human body as a thing of beauty, while also making

A sense of belonging is a fundamental motive behind human behavior. Wanting to belong (to a certain community) can influence a variety of choices, determining one’s profession, hobbies, clothing etc. – and even one’s body, as when people seek to comply with a certain ideal of beauty. Amidst an increasing vulnerability and dissatisfaction with one’s body – notably among younger generations – the American artist Cecelia Webber underlines the beauty of the human body. Her collage art is a telling commentary on the intricacies of human body and mind. “Everyone has a body, and it is the medium with which we experience existence,” says Cecelia Webber about her art, which has been exhibited worldwide. “It pains me to think that so many people feel shame and disgust when thinking about their bodies. Strange and unhealthy expectations have been

set for people in our era concerning how bodies should look, most of them through advertisements designed to sell products.”

In her Human Figure series, Webber uses tiny images of human bodies to create a greater masterpiece. Some compositions take up to two months to produce, in a process that involves patiently photographing scores of poses, and then digitally replicating, cutting and rotating them. Sometimes as many as 700 variations are processed, carefully layered and then colored to achieve her desired design. “The most difficult part is orchestrating the relationships between the different poses and

was initially delayed, but once all the necessary licenses had been obtained from the authorities, the team was eager to get things started – especially Managing Director Lo Vanhaelen, who had overseen the challenging project for the past two years.

As commissioning and construction were still ongoing, close coordination between the Commissioning team led by Jaco du Preez, Project Manager (now at Oiltanking Middle East & Africa) and the Operations team led by Victor Loureiro, was of the essence during this first operation.

Phase I was completed in February 2018, giving the Maputo terminal six tanks and a shell capacity of 58,596 cbm. Due to its location in the Port of Maputo, the terminal offers excellent access to

fuel importers in the eastern half of South Africa, as well as Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the southern provinces of

Mozambique. It will further strengthen Oiltanking’s presence in Africa and enhance the company’s ability to serve new market segments on the east coast of the continent. Oiltanking has expanded its investment in the ports of Matola and Beira by enhancing its ownership share in Oiltanking Mozambique and increased its direct stake from 60 percent to 80 percent. Initial interest from customers suggests that this will be a successful venture, and has encouraged Oiltanking to focus on expanding the capacity of the terminal.

November 26, 2017 was a red-letter day for Oiltanking in two ways. The terminal in Matola/Mozambique is Oiltanking’s first petroleum products facility on the African continent – and at the end of November, it received its first vessel.

The African country Mozambique is sometimes called the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” And as there is always the exciting possibility of finding a pearl when you open an oyster, our colleagues at the Oiltanking terminal in Maputo, Mozambique, were excited to open the pipelines and receive the load from the very first tanker ever to call on their terminal: the 183-meter Maersk Tampa (DWT 49,834 t). This would also mark the first time ever that an Oiltanking terminal stores a petroleum cargo on the African continent!

The Oiltanking venture in Mozambique was initially launched as “Project Prawn (camarão)” in 2014. It gained momentum once Oiltanking bought a majority stake in Galana Mozambique Ltd. in 2016. In 2017, an Oiltanking Matola team composed of experienced oil storage staff, former surveyors, and loading masters, was recruited and trained. Commissioning

tanks and was secured with chains on Friday afternoon when everybody left for the weekend. Customs was still on site and I worked in three shifts with three colleagues. Today we have five shifts of 11 colleagues each taking care of 100 tanks and 19 berths. And now, on average ten barges and six sea-going vessels call on Oiltanking each day. The terminal has grown tremendously and so have my responsibilities.

What do you like about your work?

The job offers a lot of variety, even though at the end of the day the goal remains the same: to ensure that the shift team does a good job, and always putting safety first in all our work. I like the barges and vessels and being outside in the open air. I enjoy working with people, I like my co-workers, and I hope to remain with Oiltanking for another ten years

How would you describeyourself?A quiet and composed person, experienced and amiable.

What do you do in your spare time?

I didn’t become a sailor but my love for the sea is unchanged. My wife Nel and I live right by the seaside and enjoy looking out at the North Sea or going to the beach. It’s good fun to watch the sea-going vessels sail into the harbor and pass the IJmuiden locks (some on their way to Oiltanking!), or the surfers, kite-surfers and people strolling along the beach. I also regularly play golf and enjoy our holidays in Spain, and good food wherever we are!

How did you end upworking for Oiltanking?

My uncle Joop Lokerse worked as an operator at Oiltanking and told me about a vacancy at

the terminal. I got the job when I was 17, and – after a one-month holiday – started working as an operator at Oiltanking as soon as I turned 18. Over the years, I was promoted from senior operator to shift supervisor, a position I have held for 24 years.

What has changed since you started workingwith Oiltanking?

In the first years, on average only one barge or sea-going vessel called on Oiltanking in a given month. The terminal had six berths and 20

Babies – whether born prematurely or on time – develop best when they are safe and sound in their parent's arms. During skin-to-skin cuddling sessions, also known as kangaroo care, parent and baby co-regulate their temperature, breathing and heart rate. Benefits include improved bonding, better brain development, less stress and crying, and deeper sleep, to name just a few. But what if parents cannot be nearby? A Dutch start-up has developed hugsy, a snug kangaroo care swaddle that can provide comfort. It records a parent’s unique and familiar heartbeat, and captures the parent’s warmth and scent, all of which are then played back to the baby. hugsy’s evidence-based design has won several awards and is already being used in clinical trials at Dutch hospitals and in private homes.

A way to stay close

BelongingnessBelongingness – the sense of belonging – is a human need. However, the degree to which people show or need this is very individual. Read on for some facets of belongingness in its narrow or wider sense, including the way in which certain objects and concepts seem to “naturally” belong together.

The world seems to be becoming more and more inter-connected, thanks to ever-increasing digitalization, globalization, and traffic flows. “It’s a small world after all,” the theme song and soundtrack of the eponymous attraction in Walt Disney theme parks, is beginning to sound more and more timely, although it was written way back in 1963. Even earlier than that, in 1929, the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy published the short story “Chains,” whose characters believed

that any two individuals in the world are connected to each other through six or fewer steps of a “friend-to-friend” chain. However, given the current global population of 7.6 billion, it appears questionable whether one can really be connected with to, say, the Queen of England, Cristiano Ronaldo or a sheep herder in a remote region of Pakistan with no more than five “degrees of separation”.

Some objects and notions are inextricably entwined with a given number. Take, for example, the six faces of a dice, the five Olympic rings, the (lucky) four-leaf clover, the count to three and finding the “one and only”. As for the number two, there are countless nonreversible word pairs, such as “black and white,” “salt and pepper,” “up and down” and “milk and honey.” Doesn’t it sound weird, for instance, when you read “forth and back”?!

When people adopt values, beliefs, goals or hobbies etc. based on what others in their peer group believe or do, they are succumbing to peer pressure. The direct influence of peers causing people to conform to some type of uniform code seems to be especially strong among children and adolescents. But adults are also subject to this phenomenon, which can manifest in various ways. For example, someone who takes up smoking just to belong to a group even though this goes against his or her own preferences or beliefs is giving

in to negative peer pressure. On the other hand, someone may quit smoking because of the (positive) peer pressure of their non-smoking friends.

It appears that people are often afraid to speak up if they are the only one in the group with an opposing view. However, studies show that the courage to stand up against peer pressure increases significantly if there is a second person lending support.

Corporate Citizenship is defined as social and environmental engagement that goes beyond a company’s core activities, with the overall aim of creating added value for society. Oiltanking is aware that its operations can have an impact on local communities, and strongly believes in its responsibility to act as a good neighbor, to build trust and mutual respect. The company aims to show its commitment in the form of financial contributions and in-kind donations, as well as volunteer work by the employees. Thereby, it concentrates its efforts on the five focus areas defined by its parent company Marquard & Bahls: environment, education, health, culture & sports, and humanitarian aid.

Effective corporate citizenship engagement requires a strategic framework with clearly defined selection criteria and processes to ensure compliance with anti-corruption laws and regulations. Donations and sponsoring by Oiltanking must comply with the guidelines and rules published by the Team Sustainability of the Function HSSE and Group Function Compliance. Besides, the corporate citizenship engagement, regardless if own volunteering projects or the funding of external organizations, should meet the ten corporate citizenship criteria recently published in the Marquard & Bahls brochure “Creating Added Value for Society”. Charitable activities and projects should e.g. match the Marquard & Bahls corporate vision, mission, values and priorities as set out in the company’s group-wide Code of Conduct. They should further allow for differentiation of our company and participation of employees as well as locals.

These 10 criteria shall be supportive in the local selection, planning and implementation of corporate citizenship projects. Additionally, donations and

sponsoring activities must be based on a reasonable arm’s length evaluation and should always be checked against red flags that are also outlined

in the brochure, which is available on the Marquard & Bahls website and in the Global Sustainability community

of the intranet connect.

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”Will Rogers William Penn Adair Rogers (Will Rogers),1879-1935, American humorist and entertainer

Did you know that it takes the approximately 100 billion nerves cells in a human brain just one-tenth of a second to pass judgement on an unknown person? According to the research of Alex Todorov, psychology professor at Princeton University, during that time we instantaneously decide whether a person possesses traits we consider important such as likeability or competence – even though we haven’t spoken a word with them. In his test, he found that people’s first judgement about the faces did not change if given more time, and that they in fact became more confident of their judgements as the length of exposure was increased (to 100 or 500 milliseconds, or a full second). Why the brain makes such snap judgments is not entirely clear. However, there is hope for anyone who thinks they might have made a bad first impression. Todorov points out that it is possible initial impressions can be overcome by the rational mind as time passes. Once people get to know each other better, they develop a more discerning conception of others.

The ‘Tunnel of Love’ is a one-kilometer section of railroad that connects the two villages of Klevan and Orzhiv in the Ukraine. Over time, arches of lush greenery have engulfed the route, traversed only very occasionally by a small train. Its romantic ambience has turned it into a popular destination, especially for honeymooners. Legend has it that couples can make a wish there and, if their love is real, the wish will come true. We trust that this is the case for our colleagues, listed below, who recently embarked on a new journey in life when their wedding wish came true.

Germany In January Gasunie LNG Holding B.V., Vopak LNG Holding B.V. and Oiltanking GmbH reached a milestone when they established the joint venture German LNG Terminal GmbH. Together, they are investigating the possibility of constructing and operating an LNG import terminal in northern Germany. The location in question, Brunsbüttel, represents an attractive business environment. In order to attract interest from the market and gain detailed insight into customer demand, an Open Season was launched starting January 17, 2018. Given a positive outcome and pending final investment decisions, construction could begin in 2019.

Karimun On November 10-11, 2017, the hearts of more than 50 Oiltanking Karimun employees beat higher as they attended the company’s long-anticipated staff gathering. The event is always a joyful occasion for employees – sociable days with a good mix of fun, serious discussions, and team-building activities designed to foster camaraderie and team spirit among the Oiltanking Karimun staff.

This year, the gathering was a 2-day event with an overnight stay at Turi Beach Resort. Fun activities like stage plays, stand-up comedy, and singing and dancing helped to promote interaction between colleagues from different departments. Events like this are essential to creating an inclusive workplace culture where everyone feels appreciated for their hard work.

Germany Oiltanking has set up a special team focused on the task of procurement. The philosophy behind procurement at Oiltanking is to ensure a proximity between decision-making and the fulfillment of business requirements. Centralized procurement will ensure benefits thanks to pooled demand and specialized buyers, which in turn will lead to savings through economies of scale and of skills, as well as facilitating compliance. This team seeks to connect all procurement

officers around the Oiltanking globe into one interactive procurement community using connect as their main communication platform, and to take advantage of the Group’s existing expertise in this field. More on the procurement core team in the next issue of connections.

A COMPETENCIES FRAMEWORK

is one of the keys to effective talent

management and succession

planning at companies

What minimum competencies does an Oiltanking employee require to be able to effectively perform his/her role or job? This question, along with the desire to increase employees’ knowledge and experience in areas where they are not considered experts, was the rationale behind project FunC. After two years of development, the new competency assurance program was launched in February 2018 as a pilot to ensure functional HSSE competency at various levels within Oiltanking; another goal was to enhance the overall HSSE culture. The pilot encompasses Oiltanking’s Managing Directors as well as the management teams at the terminals worldwide, so that in all, 510 Oiltanking employees will participate.

The program is lead-managed by the Assets & Operations (A&O) function, which worked closely with the HSSE function of Marquard & Bahls in building this competency framework, as well as receiving support from external consultants in benchmarking the company against market standards. The framework consists of 14 competencies* that describe the essential skills and behaviors needed across Oiltanking. “Clearly we don’t expect everyone to be proficient in all 14 competencies. However, we have identified the most

critical skills and behaviors for 20 standard job roles across Oiltanking, ranging from the A&O community to more broadly defined roles as in HR, Finance etc. For the A&O function, for example, we identified 13 standard roles and stipulated that each person must have proficiency across six competencies,” explains Yvan Taverniers, Director Assets & Operations. “By describing ‘how’ an employee performs, and presenting the information as observable behavior, the Oiltanking HSSE competencies framework provides a more practical and accurate way to identify and develop our people.”

The next steps involve a blended-training approach: a mixture of e-tutorials (build awareness and knowledge) that will be rolled-out throughout 2018, followed by face-to-face workshops (put the knowledge into practice) to be hosted in 2019. The fact that the first e-tutorial for the competencies has already gone live scored immediate positive feedback across various regions.

With a view to supporting the overall Oiltanking 2020 strategy (Strengthen the Core), a functional competency-assurance program for certain roles within the organization was developed: Project FunC. A pilot was run to help assure and boost HSSE competencies.

In Sync with FunC

*The 14 competencies are: Asset Integrity Management, Audits and Management Review, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability, Critical Processes, Emergency & Crisis Management, Environmental Assessment, Hazardous Product & Waste Management, HSSE Culture, HSSE Standards, Incident & Investigation, Management of Change, Process Safety, Risk Management, HSSE Principles on Engineering

As one of the world’s largest independent providers of storage, Oiltanking stores a wide range of crude and petroleum products, chemicals, and pressurized gas. Our company was built on providing these services to the petroleum industry. In the year 2000 we successfully entered the chemicals segment. Today, we are an acknowledged partner to the chemical industry, with terminals at nearly every chemical port around the world. When we added the chemical product range to our logistics services, we also gradually gained experience in the handling and storage of pressurized gases. In that connection, we now own and operate pressurized-gas tanks at our terminals in the ports of Singapore, Sohar, Daya Bay, Chennai, Sohar and Antwerp.

For some time now, the composition of global energy consumption has been changing: overall, there has been a decrease in the use of coal as an energy source, and an increase in gas and renewables. Gas is increasingly being used as a feedstock in chemical production, or burned as fuel at power plants. To strengthen the sustainability of our business portfolio, we made a strategic decision to expand our footprint in gas, both pressurized and refrigerated. Before the summer of 2016, Oiltanking didn’t own any refrigerated tanks for gaseous products such as propane, butane, LPG

(Liquefied Petroleum Gas), and ammonia - but since then, we have acquired the Antwerp Gas Terminal (AGT) and successfully commissioned refrigerated ammonia infrastructure in Nanjing, China.

Several strategic steps have already further enhanced our commercial, technical, HSSE and operational knowledge and expertise specifically geared to this market segment.

We strongly believe in expanding the refrigerated gas footprint of our global Oiltanking product portfolio, and are pleased to note that we have projects underway in several locations around the world already. One of them is close to home: the development of an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) import facility for the German market near Hamburg (see page 40).

In earlier issues of connections, our “Zooming in, Zooming out" section highlighted the three main elements of our Oiltanking Strategy. Today let’s zoom into the Refrigerated Gas expansion that forms part of our growth strategy.

Under the direction of an artists’ collective known as Germen Crew, the Mexican neighborhood of Las Palmitas in Pachuca has come alive in a rainbow of vibrant colors. The ambitious project was initiated by Mexican officials in a bid to promote community integration and a sense of belongingness.Seen from afar, the splashes of color ranging in hue from warm red and vibrant orange to bright yellow, lime green, and radiant lavender form an abstract swirly rainbow design that encompasses more than 200 houses as well as street murals and stairways in Las Palmitas. In total, 190 colors were selected to represent the soul of the neighborhood. For 14 months, the Germen Crew artists worked hand in hand with residents to turn this hillside neighborhood into a gigantic, colorful mural, in a community project designed to change the neighborhood’s negative image and promote integration. Artists and residents alike are very happy with

the results. Not only has the neighborhood been given a visual upgrade, the process of working together to create something beautiful created a sense of solidarity among residents and boosted social integration. Indeed there is less violence and more community spirit now – residents feel a sense of belongingness and are proud of their neighborhood.

The Mexican street-art collective Germen Crew has been creating public art and alternative forms of communication such as murals, graffiti, social research and documentation for more than 13 years. Its work involves reinventing public spaces to strengthen the identity of Mexican citizens, their history, and cultural practices. The name Germen Crew literally translates to “germ crew: the group hopes their work will “germinate” in others and change the way they think and feel.
