MY GOODNESS, HAS IT REALLY BEEN THAT LONG? A number of faithful readers have been re- minding us lately that it’s been over four months since we heard any more of the City Boy’s adven- tures and they’re waiting to hear what happened next from our last installment. I must confess that it didn’t seem that long ago that we left poor Siegfried standing on his nose in the Trinity College quad- rangle at the University of Toronto, the victim of young Ritchie and his U of T Engineering cohorts. You can refresh your memory by reading Issue # 991 (May 14, 2015) either in hard copy or online at our website, www.islandclippings.com archives. For those who might not be familiar with the story line, Siegfried was the City Boy’s very first car, a beat-up, worn- out, bedraggled 1963 Hillman Minx that took the City Boy and his young friends on a series of zany adventures. By modern automotive standards, Siegfried lived a relatively short and trouble-filled life, but it was also a life full of mad- ness and mayhem for all who entered through his doors – or in some cases, his windows. And most of Siegfried’s mad ad- ventures had two other things in com- mon: a couple of wild Irish lads by the name of Dermot and Connor McCluskey who lived across the street, and whose fearsome, tempera- mental father, MIS- TER (and don’t you forget it, boyo!) Mc- Cluskey, I had some- how bamboozled into selling me his pox- scarred wreck of a car. Little did I realize that both MISTER (and don’t you forget it, boyo!) McCluskey and his Missus probably laughed themselves silly every night, thinking about THAT particular con job! Clearly Dermot and Connor were the apples that didn’t fall far from the family tree! Larceny and conniving ran in their blood! Dermot and Connor were the perfect devils with whom to hatch my plan of revenge and retribution for the outrage committed on poor Siegfried that fateful night at Trinity Col- lege. tually really nice guys and good kids, but like me and appar-ently everyone else, they simply could not resist the magicspell cast by those nefarious Irish brothers. They too werevictims of that Irish charm, but they were also on board!Better yet, they had access to the tools we’d need to executeour evil plan.

Now don’t even THINK of trying this nowadays, kids!

It was a dark and stormy night … well, not really, but I’ve al-ways wanted to use that tired old cliché! … but it WAS dark, when we struck out of the night. Dressed ninja-like in darkclothing, we five conspirators crept silently up behind thelocal grocery store where the employees, of whom Ritchiewas one, usually parked. And since he was working that nightshift, Ritchie’s pride and joy – his beautiful 1967 PlymouthFury convertible was there, awaiting our attention.

We quickly got to working feverishly with jacks, wrenches, screwdrivers and other nefarious implements of destruction, making as little noise as possible, then stealing away silentlyback into the night to await Ritchie’s coming. We didn’t havelong to wait. Out came Ritchie, whistling and jingling his carkeys. He walked around the corner and, just like me back atthe Trinity College quad, his jaw dropped to his knees and hestood there, with just the beginning of a drawn-out moanslipping from his lips as he gaped in shock at his beloved car.

We had jacked his car up onto cement blocks then removedhis licence plates, followed by the steering wheel, gearshiftknob and lever, all four wheels, both doors, the hood andtrunk lid and taken out the seats. We then arranged them allin a neat, tidy, straight line, ending with his ‘Fury’ emblemsbeside a coffee can full of the nuts, bolts, screws and washersthat we had undone. We didn’t actually ‘steal’ anything, wereasoned; we had simply re-arranged things a little. He would,of course, have to spend hours putting everything back beforehe could drive the car again. Ritchie was in for a long, longnight.

Of course, we had one more twist of the knife in store forpoor Ritchie. We hid ten of those screws, bolts and thing-a-ma-bobs in the rear seat ashtrays. We figured it would drivehim crazy until he finally found them!

The truth of the matter however, is that every evil deed has itsown punishment. I knew that Ritchie knew that it was me be-hind this latest bit of skullduggery. HE knew that I knew thathe knew and his revenge was actually even sweeter. You see, Ijust knew something would happen, but didn’t know what orwhen. That worry about when the other shoe would fall onme kept me awake at nights for weeks. Whenever the doorbellrang, I’d envision someone delivering 25 unordered pizzas orsomething of that ilk.

Finally growing tired of living in constant fear and apprehen-sion, I eventually decided that perhaps Ritchie had truly beendefeated and I wouldn’t hear anything more about the wholeepisode. At my parents’ urging, I began talking with my UncleSam (not the U.S. government!) about a special project. UncleSam’s true Sicilian name was Salvatore Raccioppa but I hadalways been told to refer to him by his ‘Canadian’ name. Hemade no bones about not thinking much of me or my car …and I lived in abject fear of him! His many Sicilian friendssimply called him ‘Padrone’, but that’s another story.

Uncle Sam’s hobby was restoring cars and he was very good atit. He had a fully equipped auto body shop in his back yardand he badly wanted to get his hands on Siegfried and makehim more presentable and fit for society. Siegfried’s manydings and scratches and spots of black Tremclad rust paint

daubed all over simply offended his eye. Hespoke to my father in his low, gravel-voicedtones about ‘making me an offer I couldn’t re-fuse’. He really used those exact words – before‘The Godfather’ even came out! Uncle Samwould fix my car for me and paint it in thecolour scheme of my choice. All I had to dowas buy the paint. Wow! I fell right into theidea! I chose a pearl white glossy paint with aFerrari red racing stripe running from front toback. This was going to be great! I bought fourcans of white paint and one can of red, andturned the magic ingredients over to UncleSam, then settled back to await Siegfried’s newcrowning glory.

I could barely contain my excitement, count-ing the days to the unveiling of my new sweetride. Finally, after speaking on the phone withhim, my father said he’d drive me over toUncle Sam’s shop. I could tell that Dad wasuncomfortable and I knew that he had some-thing bad to tell me. “What is it, Dad?” I finallyasked him worriedly, urging him to let it go.Was it something about him, or Mom, or mysisters that was distressing him so?

Finally, he could contain it no longer. “UncleSam ran into a problem with the paint for

your car.” he began. Now Iwasn’t sure if he was onthe verge of tears or, or …laughter! “It seems thatwhen Uncle Sam wasready to paint the car, some of the white painthad disappeared. Hecould only find one can ofwhite paint and one ofred, so he did the best hecould with what he hadavailable.” Was Dadsnickering? He was! He was snickering!

We then arrived at Uncle Sam’s shop and there out front, thenewly-painted Siegfried awaited me. My heart immediatelysank to my ankles. Uncle Sam had opted to mix the white andred paints and spray the whole car. It was PINK! My belovedSiegfried had been painted bright PINK! How could UncleSam be so stupid? WHAT was he thinking?!

Then the light bulb came on ... I knew that Uncle Sam didn’tthink very much of me, but I had forgotten that every Tues-day night, he played cards with his buddies. One of thosecronies was Gerry (actually Guiseppe) and HIS son was ……Ritchie!

Ritchie had played it all sobeautifully, patientlyworking through his fa-ther to get my own UncleSam, blood of my blood,to betray me! I had to suf-fer the indignity of driv-ing around town in myhot PINK car, to thelaughter and ridicule ofall of my peers. Even theMcCluskey boys couldn’tkeep from smirking every

time they saw Siegfried … and from then on, wouldn’t becaught dead riding in him! They too had forsaken me!

What to do next? Well, I must confess that my half-Sicilianpersonality came to the fore: after all, it was Sicilians who in-vented the word ‘Vendetta!’ I’d have my revenge, including …nay, especially on my turncoat Uncle Sam! Having readsomewhere that revenge is a dish best served cold, I’d thinklong and hard on how to get even — with all of them.

A while later, it would all come bubbling up again to the sur-face as I watched ‘Godfather II’ when Al Pacino hugged andkissed John Cazale and said “I know it was you, Fredo! Youbroke my heart!” And we all know how THAT worked out forpoor Fredo!

A RARE EVENT WILL GRACE OUR SKIES on the night ofSunday, September 27 - a perigee lunar eclipse, or what someare calling a “Supermoon Lunar Eclipse” or even a “SuperBlood Moon.” Here’s why it’s special: not only will this be atotal lunar eclipse, when the full moon passes directlythrough the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, but it will be visi-ble, in its totality, from all of North America, It is happeningon the same night as the closest full moon of the year - the

‘perigee’ full moon, and it is the final total lunar eclipse in astring of four – known as a tetrad.

Barring any cloudy skies that may block our view, this totallunar eclipse can be seen from coast to coast in Canada. Foranyone who wishes to watch the eclipse from start to finish -from when it slips into Earth’s penumbra until it exits fullyout the other side - this will only be possible from Manitobato Atlantic Canada, as the moon only rises after the eclipsehas already begun in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

Sunday Night! A Rare ‘Blood Moon’ Eclipse!

In Ontario, you should head outside roughly an hour prior tothe start time (9:07 pm) and stay out for another hour after-ward (12:27 am)to catch the entire event. The rest of NorthAmerica, all of South America, western regions of Europe andAfrica, as well as anyone on or above the Atlantic Ocean willalso have a spectacular view of the event.

‘Supermoon’ Eclipse: Some years ago, astrologer RichardNolle coined the term ‘supermoon’ to denote when a full ornew moon occurs when the moon is particularly close toEarth - within about 361,000 kilometres, or roughly 4,600kms away from the absolute closest approach it makes duringan orbit.

Based on his metric, there are typically six supermoons everyyear. However, this particular full moon and total lunareclipse are occurring at a slightly more special time of the yearthan a supermoon. It is occurring during 2015’s perigee fullmoon - the absolute closest full moon we’ll see for this year -at just 356,876 kms away. According to records, this is theclosest full moon since March 2011, and there will be an evencloser one in November of 2016. At this distance from us, themoon will appear around 14% larger than usual.

The September 27 eclipse marks the completion of a LunarTetrad - four total lunar eclipses in a row.

Although some periods have gone by with no tetrads at all, when they do occur there can be up to eight in a century. The20th century saw 5 tetrads, and the tetrad of 2014-2015 is thesecond of eight in total between 2001 and 2100.

The first three eclipses of this tetrad took place on April 15and October 8 of 2014, and April 4 of 2015. While they haveall been visible from at least part of North America, only theApril 15, 2014 eclipse, and the upcoming eclipse on Septem-ber 27, are visible from coast to coast.

At our press time, the official Environment Canada weatherforecast for Sunday night calls for Cloudy periods with a 30%chance of showers. We’ll just have to wait and see!
