Community News for Hackbridge, Beddington Corner & Wandle Valley ISSUE 22 SEPT-NOV 2011 Connecting our community The River Wandle rises in the Surrey Hills and flows through Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth. For centuries it has played a vital role in life of people in south west London. It has a rich cultural and industrial heritage, with associations with William Morris, Liberty Print Works, calico printing, and the production of watercress and lavender. A number of the mills which generated power for agriculture and industry remain along the course of the river, whilst there are also remnants of grander landscapes of former country estates. The Wandle Valley is set to be transformed from a share in an £18m award from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the nation's beauty spots. The money will be used to protect the valley's diverse natural environment and to encourage neighbouring communities to get more involved through volunteering projects and education. (Local volunteers join in the Wandle Trust clean-ups every month – see www.wandletrust.org.) Volunteering can be a good way into – or back into – a job. It’s also a good way of meeting other people and finding out what’s going on locally. Sometimes it’s just fun, sometimes you get something back (such as free veg if you help with planting, weeding and harversting at Sutton Community Farm www.suttoncommunityfarm.org.uk or 020 8404 7085 for more info.) Can you help run a website, edit this magazine, serve lunches, read to children, run errands for housebound neighbours, lead a cub pack, pick up litter? – everyone can get involved in something! We know someone who is a whizz at assembling Ikea flat packs – so maybe we should add a skillshare column to this newsletter? Localism is coming to HACKBRIDGE! Conor Moloney reports on recent meetings

We are a group of local people and we are planning the future of Hackbridge and Beddington Corner. We are using new planning powers the government has given to local communities to put together a neighbourhood plan for OUR area. We are part of a government pilot scheme, supported by Sutton Council and a range of expert advisors.

What is a neighbourhood plan? A neighbourhood plan is a clear simple statement of what sort of place local people want to live in, and how they want to see the area change over the next 5, 10, and 15 years in order to make it happen. We have done a lot of work on this in recent years, and agreed that we want Hackbridge to become a ‘Sustainable Suburb’ based on the principles of ‘One Planet Living’ (see www.oneplanetsutton.org). At the moment we are beginning to work in more detail on the following themes:

Sustainable Building Housing and urban planning

Sustainable Infrastructure Transport, Energy, Water and Waste

Health and Happiness Younger/older people, families, community facilities

Environment

Green spaces, Biodiversity, Heritage

Local Economy

Work, shopping, balanced economic development

Community engagement Local leadership in the process of change

What will it mean for YOU? Neighbourhood planning will mean guiding changes that we think are likely to be needed in the coming years, including:

• Improving the area around the STATION, to make it more attractive and welcoming; • Ensuring the FELNEX redevelopment is worthy of its location at the heart of the Hackbridge

Sustainable Suburb; and • Working with people to upgrade their existing HOMES so they are warm, comfortable, and

energy-efficient; Do you have a project YOU would like to see included? Let us know!

How can YOU find out more? We will also be taking part in the Hackbridge Carnival on Saturday 1st October so keep an eye out for us there and come and say hello! We plan to work through the autumn and winter to develop the neighbourhood plan, so there will be lots of opportunities to get involved. More information is available from the new Hackbridge Network neighbourhood website www.hackbridge.net which is due for launch at the Community Forum on 26th September.

How can YOU get involved? If you live or work in the area and would like to have a more direct role in shaping the Neighbourhood Plan, then get in touch with us, the Hackbridge & Beddington Corner Neighbourhood Development Group, initially via Sally Blomfield at LBSutton: [email protected] (pending formal constitution of the group)

Energy saving in Hackbridge

The community buildings and homes in the Hackbridge Low Carbon Zone are getting free and discounted energy-saving measures as part of Sutton Council’s ambition to achieve a 20.12% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2012.

Measures that have been installed in residents’ homes include loft insulation, draught-proofing, replacement boilers and gas central heating.

All Saints Community Centre has had cavity wall insulation and new lighting installed and Spencer Nursery and the Percy Road Gospel Hall have had new boilers to replace their inefficient old ones. Culvers House Primary School has benefited from improved lighting and later on this year we are planning solar panels for the Community Centre and smart energy-metering for Hackbridge Primary School. To learn more about Hackbridge Low Carbon Zone: email [email protected] or call 0208 770 5012.

Safer Sutton Partnership Launches Domestic Violence One Stop Shop

Domestic Violence mostly happens behind closed doors and is a topic people rarely discuss. Victims feel alone, embarrassed, and helpless. Their abusers exercise a pattern of power and control, often over a long period of time, which leaves some victims believing the abuse is actually their fault.

As part of our response, the Safer Sutton Partnership is pleased to announce the launch of Sutton’s Domestic Violence One Stop Shop, which will take place every Wednesday morning from 9:30 – 11:30 at Sutton Baptist Church, 21 Cheam Road, SM1 1SN.

This is a free, confidential drop-in service available to any Sutton resident experiencing Domestic Violence. They will be able to get advice and support from an Independent Domestic Violence Advocate (IDVA) from Victim Support, Police, Solicitors, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and others.

You may not be in need of this service yourself, but if you know of somebody else who would benefit, please encourage them to come along for a free, confidential advice session. For further information or advice, call Victim Support on 0208 685 1637, or text DV to 65101.

All those little things…….

It doesn’t use very much so it's OK to leave it on. Perhaps this is true for small items but the average home has over a dozen little things each not using very much and a dozen little things do add up to a big saving if you turn them all off. Many things, in fact most things, are not off unless you switch them off at the wall socket or unplug them.

Here is a list of the power in watts of many little things…… and how much a typical household might save.

VICAR'S CORNER

BEATING THE BLUES

My wife is currently reading a book called “59 seconds – think a little, change a lot”. It is full of a range of techniques to improve our life based on scientific research. (Each chapter ends in a short summary which you can read in under a minute, hence the title).

One of the chapters on relationships is called “five to one”. It includes a page full of 16 smiley faces and one sad one. The challenge was to see how long it took to find the frowney one. Like everyone else, I found it in two second flat. It illustrates the point that we pick up negative messages much faster than positive ones. If half a dozen people after church say what a good sermon I gave (it doesn't actually happen) and someone makes a critical point, it is the critical point that I remember and need to have a sherry to cheer myself up. Apparently it takes five positive messages to counterbalance one negative one.

It is a widespread human characteristic, but not a helpful one, because it leads directly to self-pity. As Paul Newman said in “The Color of Money”, “Self-pity is real popular. It's a game played by all.” All self-pity does is to dig ourselves deeper into our misery until the world gets very dark and very small. It's called the blues.

Is there another way? I think so. It is to develop “an attitude of gratitude”. Not to make ourselves feel grateful. That is nigh on impossible. It's our feelings that are the problem. What I find works is to write out a list. Last thing at night I sit down and make a list of 10 things I can be grateful for. These can range from “I'm alive,” to “I enjoyed the sausages at supper”. In the morning I look at them again and see if I can add any new ones. It helps me face the day, to be a nicer person to those around me, and it helps my prayers to be open to God instead of being dogged by self-obsession.

St Paul's advice is as valid as it was 1950 years ago: “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each another and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another... Over all these virtues put on love... Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts... And be thankful.” (Colossians 3.12-15)
