Dear fellow G.R.A.P.E members, It is my great pleasure to greet you as the president of the Greater Rochester Area Partnership for the Elderly. I was thrilled to see many of you at our 25th Silver Anniversary Gala on June 8th. This year’s annual dinner was indeed a successful one and we had a huge turnout! I would like to express my gratitude for the leadership and advocacy of our past President, Lorre Anderson, and the tireless work of all the members of the Board, Executive Committee, and all of the other hardworking committees that are the backbone of this organization. I encourage members to take a look at the different committees listed in the newsletter, or reach out to myself, a Board member, Committee Chair, or Executive Director Kim Kenna to find out how you can join any of the following committees: Newsletter, Advocacy, Marketing, Program, Finance, and many more . In my opinion, it is the best way to become more closely involved in the continued growth and success of the organization. I look forward to our Summer Networking events, and hope to see and interact with lots of new members as we ease into another (too short) Rochester summer. Personally, I will be trying to catch my breath as my children’s school years come to a close, and try to fit in some weekend getaways to further explore beautiful Upstate NY area hiking, waterfalls, and lakes. I hope that each of you also take some time for yourselves, reconnecting with family and friends this summer. When our programming and regular meetings start back up in September, I challenge each of you to take the initiative to grow personally and professionally in 2017-2018 with G.R.A.P.E. by your side. Our exciting variety of educational speakers, ElderCare Fairs, and networking opportunities are provided to assist our members in achieving their professional and personal goals. It is up to you to take advantage of them. I would also encourage you to reach out to me with any feedback you may have at [email protected] so that we can work together to continue to make G.R.A.P.E. great! Sincerely, Connie Lester

A ugust … already?!

I hope you have taken time to enjoy time with family and friends whether it be here

in Rochester or in a vacation spot, we all deserve a little summer fun!

Remember to add G.R.A.P.E. to your calendar this month and come out to join us

for the casual breakfast gathering at Pinehurst, August 16th.

Spending the last several weeks planning for our next membership year and

hearing our G.R.A.P.E. Segments on WYSL’s Seniors Rock Radio show has been

invigorating! Thanks to the hard work, support and creativity from our

membership, I believe we will have a year of tremendous growth! (see our New

Members on Page 4)

It has been 3 years since our last Print Edition of The ElderPages and the

Committee is working feverishly to meet the fall deadline. I am in amazement at

the hard work and dedication this committee has when under pressure! Please show

your support by doing your part and updating your Provider/Company Profiles!!

The listings and the accuracy of them are up to each of you. At this time, I would

like to acknowledge the funders that have made the Directory Printing possible:

NCJW, National Jewish Women Council, Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation, John F.

Wegman, Greater Rochester Health Foundation and NYSOFA Legislative grant via

Joseph Morelle.

Our 25th Silver Anniversary G.R.A.P.E. Gala had over 240 people in attendance

and we have heard nothing but rave reviews. A few adjectives and comments

shared with the committee were: memorable, like no other, great atmosphere,

scenic, fun… “G.R.A.P.E. Members danced?!” Oh, yes they did! THANK YOU

AGAIN to our emcee Deanna Dewberry from Channel 10, over 60 generous

sponsors and our Gala Committee because of your support we were able to

celebrate Gala-Style!

The Annual Dinner Committee wouldn’t be successful if it wasn’t already

planning for NEXT year! You will definitely want to mark your calendars for the

26th Annual Dinner on June 14, 2018. The committee has already planned to

bring some of what you liked this year into next year! Stay tuned for more exciting

details about the theme and location.

Our members are staying connected this summer even though there were not

traditional membership meetings many came out to the casual events including

Painting with a Twist which raised $100 for G.R.A.P.E., the coffee club at Mellow

Mug, New Roots Coffee House and Quail Summit.

One final word before I conclude…. RENEW!

You can pay your membership dues through your Member Login. Click on “Renew

Membership” or contact the office and pay by credit card or request an invoice.

Happy Summer to all and see you soon!

“Don’t wait too long” “Don’t wait too long.” Words of wisdom from Jane, a resident of

The Highlands at Pittsford. She expressed that seizing

opportunities or making your own for the things you want out of

life should never be put on hold. Be proactive!

Joan also speaks lovingly of her late husband, who she said spent

his retirement volunteering in fields such as the one he worked

in. This ‘continuity of activity’ kept him young, and continues to

keep her young and full of life!

Want Better Health? Go Outside

Being in green or blue spaces may improve your physical and mental health

By Elizabeth Marglin July 18, 2017

If you want to feel better, become more active and live longer, the answer may sound similar to the familiar real estate mantra:

Location, location, location. Being out in nature — or even living close to it — can have a significant, positive impact on your

health.

And nature doesn’t have to mean vast swaths of wilderness. It can also be an urban park, a garden or even a tree-lined street. The

current lingo for describing different natural environments is green space (an area with a high density of green in an otherwise urban

setting) and blue space (water-based environs with standing or running water such as oceans, lakes, rivers, fountains or streams).

So is nature the new-old miracle medicine for brain health?

Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative, thinks so. Her recent

book extols the effect that nature can imprint not just on our psyche, but on our soul. (Williams also wrote Breasts: A Natural and

Unnatural History and hosts the Breasts Unbound podcast on Audible.com.)

To find out why nature has such a profound effect on us, Williams tracked researchers all over the globe who are developing new

frontiers of nature neuroscience. Peter James, a researcher at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Population Medicine, says,

“This is the bio philia theory — that we evolved with nature to have an affinity for nature.” But technology creep has eroded that

affinity. On average, says Williams, less than a quarter of American adults say they spend 30 minutes or more outside every day.

The science is just starting to prove what we intuitively feel: that nature holds a rejuvenating power for both brain and body. Here

are five life-changing reasons to get yourself to a park, forest or beach:

1. Nature as a Stress-Buster

A 2017 study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology measured Finnish people’s well-being in three environments: a

city center, a busy city park and an urban woodland. Researchers found that people who sat a mere 15 minutes in both the park and

forest had a sense of feeling psychologically restored. Cortisol (a stress hormone) levels significantly decreased in both nature-based

settings.

For those confined to the indoors, a room with a nature view can still make a dent in stress levels. A seminal study published

decades ago showed that patients in hospital rooms with nature views spent less time in the hospital and needed less pain medication

than those in hospital rooms with a view of a brick wall.

And if you are a stuck in the office, try angling for a desk with a view: Office workers in South Korea who had a forest view had

higher job satisfaction and less job stress than workers with no forest view.

2. A Push to Get Out and Move

Living close to vegetation seems to provide an irresistible invitation to get outside and play. “Being near green space is linked with

higher levels of physical activity,” James tells Next Avenue.

Jessica Finlay, an environmental gerontologist at the University of Minnesota, says her research found that time in nature

contributed to overall well-being. “Natural spaces tended to promote physical activity, such as walking, gardening, golfing, hiking,

bicycling. People enjoyed venturing outside, in all different weather and times of the year. A green environment provided a reason

to get out the door. It made people feel more active, as well as happier,” she says.

3. A Possible Weapon Against Depression

A large study out of the University of Exeter Medical School in England analyzed data from 10,000 city residents and found that

those living closer to urban nature experienced a pronounced “green space effect:” a perceived sense of higher life satisfaction coupled

with less mental distress.

Although how exactly nature effects the brain is still unknown. One theory is that it serves as a buffer against depression. A

2015 Stanford University study found that subjects taking a walk in a natural setting had decreased activity in the brain region

associated with repetitive, negative thoughts compared with those who walked along a traffic-heavy, four-lane roadway. The study

homes in on the mechanics of the brains-on-nature experience: One reason nature makes us feel better is because it serves as a de facto

emotional regulator, inhibiting our tendency to brood.

4. ‘A Tangible Way to Feel Less Alone’

According to Finlay’s research, natural settings offer a key opportunity for social engagement. “They provided places for

multigenerational social interactions and engagement, including planned activities with friends and families as well as impromptu

conversations with neighbors,” she says. The participants said instead of feeling isolated and lonely at home, “they could have a chat

with someone on a bench. Or stop and pet a neighbor’s dog. Being outside was a tangible way to feel less alone.”

5. A Potential Link to Longevity

The most dramatic finding may be that simply living close to some degree of nature may prolong your life expectancy. James, the lead

author on a 2016 study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, found that after

adjusting for age, socioeconomic status and race, the group whose homes were surrounded by high levels of greenery had a 12 percent

lower mortality rate than those in the lowest-vegetation areas.

The nationwide cohort study of over 100,000 nurses used satellite imagery to assess their home’s proximity to vegetation and then

combined that information with their medical records. The association between greenery and lower mortality rates was strongest for

respiratory and cancer mortality.

Although many of us may have lost touch with the great outdoors, the science keeps pointing to it as a free, effective way to feel better

about ourselves and our connection to the world around us.

Now that’s worth opting out for.

The GRAPEvine is the

official publication of the

Greater Rochester Area

Partnership for the Elderly.

It is published by the

G.R.A.P.E. Board of

Directors to communicate

appropriate G.R.A.P.E.

business, decisions and

positions, and to keep

membership informed

about aging-related issues.

G.R.A.P.E. is an organization of professionals

and interested persons who aspire to improve the

quality of services for older people. We accomplish

this by sharing expertise, knowledge and skills,

and by acting as their advocates in ways deemed

appropriate by the membership.

G.R.A.P.E. seeks to foster a sense of camaraderie

among professionals, provide high-quality education

and training, influence social and public policies and

facilitate debate about emerging issues, and

compile and disseminate an accurate and up-to-date

listing of elder services in the Greater Rochester area.

G.R.A.P.E. members are

encouraged to submit ideas,

pictures and articles, with subjects

relating to elder care. We also

solicit calendar events,

announcements, and employment

opportunities. Pictures should be

submitted digitally to the

G.R.A.P.E. office. Articles are

subject to revision by the

GRAPEvine Newsletter

Committee. Please do not include

politics, religion, or advertising in

your submission. We are not

responsible for errors or omissions.
