Tamilnadu. Also, Shri Rajevee Chawla, President, SMSE and Dr. T. Thiagarajan, Centre for
University Industry Collaboration, Anna University spoke.
After the Inaugural sessions, during the tea break, Media briefing went on. Shri Harbhajan
Singh, Shri Ajith Mathur, Shri Vivekanand, Shri Rajevee Chawla, Shri P. Dharmalingam were
present
The media such as Doordharshan Kendra (DDK), All India Radio (AIR), Indian Express (English)
Dinamalar & Dinamani (Tamil)
Few questions were put up to the panel consisting of Shri Harbhajan Singh, I.A.S, Director
General, NPC, New Delhi and others by the media/press and panel members aptly replied. The
panel also briefed the about the programme which is follows:
Todays industry requires students to link theoretical concepts to an integrated practical
industrial scenario. For this, fresh graduates need specific inputs on how to get an overall
perspective of industry challenges. As most engineering courses and workshops are not
integrated, it is difficult for engineering institution to run such a programme. The design of
NPCs facility is designed for such an integrated programme.
As this is not a technical skill enhancement programme, we will look for threshold levels of
knowledge in terms of basic engineering concepts, but once done, the five day course will help
the students get integrated understanding of various technical concepts and their application
for solving real life industry problems.
The certification programme on Connected Thinking in Core Thinking is intended to help
students get an overall perspective and understanding of real world industry problems. Today,
students study different subjects and courses as part of the Four year programme, however,
the industry requires professionals who are able to think beyond their specific roles and
connect to the big picture. In their journey from Campus to Corporate, we believe they need to
understand how all these individual sets of knowledge can be applied to solve practical every
day problems in industry situations.
DDK telecasted the proceedings of the workshop on the same day (4.7.2014) in their live news
channel at 6.30 p.m. The presidential speech of Shri Harbhajan Singh, I.A.S was telecasted in the
live news channel. The Director AIP also gave an interview in Tamil to Doordharshan Kendra
(DDK) and Prachar Bharathi (All India Radio). The interview with DDK was recorded lively (in
Tamil) whereP.Dharmalingam briefed about the councils activities including the Centre of
Excellence for Training in Energy Efficiency (CETEE), a state-of-the art facility. The live video was

recorded for more than 10 minutes. Besides this, his speech was also recorded by Prachar
Bharati for broadcasting in All India Radio News (FM Gold 102.3). Also, the AIR broadcasted in
their news at 7.45 p.m. in their programme SETHI KADAMBAM(in Tamil)
CERTIFICATION PROGRAM LAUNCHED TO MAKE ENGG STUDENTS READY FOR INDUSTRY
AIP conference hall was filled to the brim
with over 100 distinguished delegates
comprising of principals, Deans and
HODs of niche engineering colleges,
Managing Directors of large American
companies, US consulate
representatives, and even participants
from student community for a unique
Workshop on 4th
July at Centre of
Excellence for Training in Energy
Efficiency (CETEE) facility of National
Productivity Council, Chennai. The questions on everyonesmind is concerning the theme of
the workshop What is this Connected Thinking in Core Engineering and how can it be useful
to engineering students and industry?
Director General Shri Harbajan Singh IAS , NPC inaugurated the workshop and said that he is
throwing open the State of art of CETEE facility which until now is being used only by large
companies and organizations like
ONGC, GAIL, PowerGrid, BEE, UNEP,
APO, UNIDO to student community.
The Connected Thinking in Core
Engineering, a joint initiative by NPC
and American Chamber of Commerce
(AMCHAM), launched a first of its kind
certification programme aimed at
students of engineering and related
streams. While NPC will develop and
deliver the course, AMCHAM will offer

industry inputs and case studies, and Deloitte the international consulting firm will be the
knowledge partner and facilitator for the programme.
Although students study many subjects and courses as part of 4 year program, they lack overallperspective and understanding of real life industrial problems. Indian industry today requires
engineering students to link theoretical concepts picked up in college to an integrated practical
industrial scenario. As most engineering courses and workshops are not integrated
(mechanical/ electrical/ instrumentation function as separate departments), it is difficult for
engineering institutions to run such a programme.
As a result, industry spends huge amount of money and time (6 months to one year) to make
newly recruited engineers useful to tackle real life industrial problems. Industry needsprofessionals who are able to think beyond their core discipline and specific roles and connect
to a big picture. In their journey from Campus to Corporate, students need to understand how
all these individual sets of knowledge can be applied to solve practical everyday problems in
industry situations.
The Japanese-aided Centre of Excellence for Training in Energy Efficiency (CETEE) facility and
certification program on Connected Thinking in Core Engineering is designed for such an
integrated programme. CETEE facility setup through assistance of Japanese Government houses
all equipment related to industry such as motors, pumps, compressors, fan, furnace, boiler,
steam traps, heat exchangers, Refrigeration
& Air conditioning, Lighting systems. The
faculty who will deliver the programme
have rich experience in dealing with
practical industry needs and are uniquely
suited to deliver this course.
This programme is not intended to be
merely a technical skill enhancement
programme. Such connected thinking
requires maturity and change in attitudes.
During the course the students will be treated like Officers as they would be treated in
professional life. They will be expected to take decisions, make presentations and reports and

behave like Officers both at work and off work. They will learn how important it is to possess
Officer Like-Qualities.
Mr. Ajith Mathai, Director, Deloitte presented
the framework and structure of Connected
thinking in Core Engineering and said certificate
will be jointly issued by AMCHAM and NPC. Shri.
Harbajan Singh, IAS in his presidential address
said This facility will not only improve skills
development of students but also help them
meet the emerging needs of the industry. Shri V.
Vivekanand, President AMCHAM and Managing
Director, Caterpillar India said AMCHAM and American companies will support the
certification program through subsidy of fees for deserving students through CSR initiative.
Shri. Rajiv Chawla, President MSME who had come all the way from Delhi especially for this
workshop said We need badly similar program for North India as competency of newly
recruited engineers is very low there. Dr. Thiagarajan, Director, Centre for University Industry
Collaboration, Anna University, Anna University, under which over 500 engineering colleges are
affiliated, remarked This is an excellent facility and I have been authorized by Vice Chancellor,
Anna University to offer full support for the programme.
