A Kingdom Kid praysMatthew 6:9–13;

Luke 18:1–7; Ephesians 6:18

The prayer begins by reminding us of who we are praying to—‘Our Father in heaven’. We have the privilege of an intimate relationship with God as our Father, but we should always appreciate that he is the all-powerful Creator of the universe, and the one who is holy. And our entry into God’s presence is costly because the price was Jesus’ blood (Hebrews 10:19–22). We can enter into God’s presence, through prayer, confidently, but never taking this privilege for granted.

Recognising who we are praying to, Jesus encourages us to pray for six things:

1. That we would give God the honour and respect due to him. Everything a Christian says or does reflects on the one whose name we bear (6:9c).

2. That through the preaching of the gospel and growth of the Church, and especially when Jesus returns, God’s kingdom would be revealed on earth (6:10a).

3. That God’s perfect plan would work out here on earth (6:10b).

4. That God would provide for all our daily needs (6:11). In a reasonably affluent country we can be tempted either to forget that everything we need day to day comes from God, or worry too much about what will happen in the future. We are encouraged to ask for what we need today (Exodus 16).

5. That God would forgive us and that we would forgive others the way that we have been forgiven (6:12; Matthew 18:23–35).

6. That God would keep us from being tempted and rescue us from sin and the devil (6:13).

We are encouraged to never stop praying (Ephesians 6:18) and to be persistent in our prayers (Luke 18:1–8). Kingdom Kids are not to be discouraged if they don’t see the answer to their prayers immediately because we can remember that God is a loving Father who loves to give us good things (Matthew 7:7–11).

LESSON AIM ■ To help students to understand that praying is

both a privilege and a pleasure for God’s children.

LESSON OUTCOMESStudents will learn about:

■ how God loves to hear our prayers ■ the Lord’s Prayer, as an excellent model

for praying.

Students will learn to: ■ identify various aspects of prayer ■ be able to state what prayer is, why we

pray, who can pray, and where, when and how we can pray.

MEMORY VERSE Think how much the Father loves us. He loves us so much that he lets us be called his children, as we truly are. 1 John 3:1 (CEV)

» Bible backgroundA Kingdom Kid is someone who speaks to their Father. Communication is essential in any relationship. Last week we learned that we listen to God by reading his word, the Bible. This lesson focuses on how we speak to God through prayer.

During his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave his disciples a model for prayer (Matthew 6:9–13). We must remember that Jesus’ intention was not for us simply to recite this prayer but that Christians would use it as a framework for the kinds of things we should pray for (Matthew 6:5–8).

■ Can these things we’ve written down be grouped in any way? (Begin to classify the students’ contributions into groups, using coloured marker pens. For instance, asking for things, telling God about our worries, adoration/praise, giving thanks, saying sorry.)

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, this is what Jesus said: (Encourage students to follow along in their Activity books.)

Read Luke 11:1–4 from a CEV Bible.

■ Does this remind you of something? (Accept responses. It sounds just like the Lord’s Prayer [because it is the CEV, some students may be more familiar with the more commonly used version of the Lord’s Prayer from Common Prayer: Resources for Gospel-shaped Gatherings?].)

The Lord’s Prayer is a great model for us when we want to talk to God.

Indicate the piece of butcher’s paper with the heading WHY?

■ Why should we pray? (Accept responses and write these up on butcher’s paper.)

When you want to get to know someone, you talk with them! It’s no different with God. He loves to hear us talking to him. Praying helps us to know God better.

Praying also helps us to become more like him, as we ask him for forgiveness and for help to live in the way he wants us to. So praying helps us to grow as God’s children.

As we’ve just discovered, we pray to God to tell him how wonderful we think he is and to thank him for this (praise), to make requests, to say sorry for not living God’s way, and to ask God for help.Bible icon

Ask students to write a response in the WHY? section in their Activity books.

» Way in ■ If you wanted to learn to play cricket and

you could ask anyone in the world to help you, who would be the best person to ask? (Accept responses. Students may disagree about who is the ‘greatest cricketer’!)

■ And if you wanted to learn to swim, who might you ask to help you? (Accept responses.)

■ What if you wanted to learn to sing, who could you get to help you? (Accept responses.)

One time, Jesus’ followers, the disciples, wanted to learn how to pray.

■ Who do you think they asked to help them? Why? (Accept responses. Jesus—he is God’s Son and the Bible tells us he prayed to his Father often.)

■ Why do you think they had to be taught how to pray? (Accept responses.)

If someone asked you to teach them to pray, I wonder what you would include in your ‘lesson’.

In today’s lesson, we’re going to find out what Jesus included in his ‘lesson’ to the disciples.

» Bible focus ■ What is prayer?

(Accept responses and write the students’ suggestions on the piece of butcher’s paper with the heading WHAT?)

■ What sorts of things might we pray about? (Add these to the sheet of paper. Be sure to cover that it is communicating with God, including acknowledging him as the creator of all things, saying sorry for things we have done that are against him, thanking him for what he has done for us and given us, and asking him to guide us, help us and provide for our needs.)Bible icon

» ConnectionsIsn’t it amazing that God has made a way for us to talk to him? He is the Creator of the whole universe, and yet he says, ‘Come and talk to me’. That’s so awesome!

God says, ‘Anyone can talk to me at any time, anywhere, about anything! And they can be sure that I will hear their prayers and answer them. Sometimes I might say ‘yes’, sometimes I might say ‘no, that’s not best for you’ and sometimes I might get you to wait. But I will always be there to listen.’Bible icon

■ Which of these best describes praying? (Accept responses. Knowing, growing.)

Perform the following rap with the students. See Lesson 11 for instructions on how to engage the students.

We’ve got a Father in heaven who wants to hear us pray.

Doesn’t matter what the time is, night or day.

He says, ‘Tell me, tell me, what’s going on for you?

Tell me all the little things, I want to hear them too.

You see I love you, I love you, more than you will know.

I want to share your life with you, as on life’s path you go.

Nothing is impossible, I made the moon and stars,

The earth, the seas, the flowers and the things both near and far.

So just talk to me and tell me anything you’d like to say.

I’m always right there with you and I love to hear you pray.’

Indicate the piece of butcher’s paper with the heading WHO?.

■ Who can pray? (Accept responses and write these up on butcher’s paper.)

We can pray anywhere! We could be in the car, or in the bath, or riding our bikes. But it’s good to set aside a special time in the day when we can just talk with God without any distractions. It’s about giving God all our attention.Bible icon

Read Ephesians 6:18a stopping at ‘… of the Spirit.’ from a CEV Bible.

We can pray anytime! And we read here that we are never to stop praying! So it’s good to pray whenever we think about it! We don’t need to drop everything and close our eyes—we can just pray what’s on our mind, or quickly say thank you when something great happens or when we see something really lovely.

But again, it’s good to set aside a place where we can get comfortable (without falling asleep!) and where we won’t be disturbed.Bible icon

INSTRUCTIONS FROM JESUS

Ask the students to read Matthew 6:5–7 and list the instructions Jesus gave before teaching the disciples to pray. Ask them to name the things Jesus does not want us to do when we pray.

» Teacher reflections ■ Were the students familiar with the

Lord’s Prayer?

■ Did the students take prayer time seriously or do they need to be reminded that they are talking to God?

» For next lesson ■ You will need to gather some items for next

lesson, including various objects around the theme of ‘sickness’, a Medicare card and a ‘thank you’ card.

Revise the Memory verse using an idea from pages 187–189 if you have time.

The solution to the find-a-word in the Activity book is:
