The August Business Meeting agenda will include the following:

Welcome & Announcements - Sandy Reynolds

Election of Alternate Board Member

Voter Engagement—Itzel Martinez The funds to cover our monthly expenses have decreased. We are looking at creative ways to support out club, and are hoping that one person per month would be willing to sponsor the cost of the monthly $50 liquor license. You will have an opportunity to volunteer to make that contribution at our meeting. Thank you for your kind consideration.

focusing on 3 specific areas: 1) March in 2020 in all local parades in Sonoma County; 2) The Sonoma County History & Genealogy Library is mapping the county to identify significant locations throughout the county that were important during the suffrage movement. You can volunteer by contacting Kathe-rine at [email protected]; and 3) Social Justice & Advocacy Programs ensuring voting rights. You can find more information at their website of www.socowomen2020.org.

Our program for the month was a Readers Thea-tre production of “A Voice of Her Own - Women’s Suffrage.” The presentation was written, directed and narrated by club member, Bill Trzeciak.

The members are from left to right: Chris Rogers, Millie Olson, Janet Reynolds, Bill Montgomery, Bill Trzeciak, Shirley Bennett, and Nanci Hoban. The readers presented actual words and readings from the Suffragists including portions of the trial of Susan B. Anthony for voting in a federal election. California passed women’s right to vote in 1911, but had to wait for the 19th Amend-ment’s pass-ing in 1919 and ratifica-tion in 1920 to vote in Federal elec-tions. A visual presentation added to the overall en-joyment and education of the event.

J uly Meeting

Our intrepid President, Sandy Reynolds, was on a much deserved

vacation in July. In her absence, Alix Shor, 1st Vice President for Programs, reported to the membership that we have an opening on our Executive Board, for a Member-at-Large Alter-nate due to Lori Kunkle moving to Arizona. If any-one is interested, please contact Alix or Sandy by email. We anticipate voting on a new board member at the August meeting. We thank Alix for doing a great job in Sandy’s absence.

Nanci Hoban reviewed SRDC’s involve-ment in ensuring post cards are sent far and wide assisting in many elections around the US. We are currently working on post cards to voters in CA Assembly District 1 having a primary election to fill

this vacant seat on August 27th. Nanci will be host-ing a post card writing event at her home in the near future. Due to the continued cost for post cards and stamps, the club is asking members and supporters for donations. Thank you to all who donated.

Val Hinshaw reported about the upcoming Sonoma County Democratic Party booth at the Sonoma County Fair which begins August 1st and ends Au-gust 11th. There are still a few open slots for volunteers. We will be doing a daily straw poll of our Democratic Presidential Can-didates. Results are listed on the next page.

Leslie Graves & Katherine Rinehart of the Sonoma County 2020 Women’s Suf-frage Project informed club members and supporters of this project’s work and up-

coming events to cele-brate the 100th anni-versary of passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment. The project is

Several SRDC members staffed the Sonoma County Democratic Party’s booth at the recent County Fair. Our thanks to Jann Edwards, Ken Fox, Barbara Fry, Linda Graves, Brenda Harris, Bill & Nanci Hoban, Ginger Kelly, Gregg Jann, Judy Leddy, Genie McKenzie, Susan & Tony Negri, Susan Saludes, Steve Saulsbury, Julie Schaefer, and

Steve Shuck. SRDC managed the booth on both Fridays at the County Fair. Sonoma County Democratic Party’s annual BBQ will be on Sunday, Sept 15th (see page 7). This year, all chartered clubs will be honored. We are asking club members who will attend to wear our club’s T-shirts. Special sale at the 8/28 meeting $15 each

(all sizes) or two for $25! Limited sizes are still available in both men’s and women’s styles (women’s run small). Stop by the table and pick yours up (see page 9). SRDC is pleased to report that our club can now

take credit and debit cards for payment. We do prefer cash or check, and understand that for some folks using a card is faster and easier. You can pur-chase your T-shirt(s) or buttons with ease should you not have enough cash or didn’t bring your check-book!

Adopt a ―Honey Bucket‖ for the Homeless

As has been previously reported, Board Member Eileen Bill continues to assist with the parking lot where homeless people are al-lowed to park a car overnight. The parking lot remains as a safe parking spot (which has been on-going for over 3 years) for those former HUTS users who had a vehicle as well as up to 15 people who also have cars. These people continue to utilize the port-a-potty so funds are still needed for that purpose. In addition, there is a shower bus that serves those un-housed in the area, and the landown-er also pays for the water for that usage and has done so for the past 3 years.

A deep thank you to those who can continue to sup-port this project and very important service! If you would like to contribute, you can send checks to the following: Peace & Justice Ctr of So. Co. (for tax deductible contributions). Please write “HOMELESS ACTION! - SANITATION” on the memo line. Mail to: 467 Sebastopol Rd, Santa Rosa 95401

You can also donate to the following:

E.A.C.H. (non-tax-deductible), 1 Kingston Way Cotati, CA 94931

You can make a monthly donation by contacting Homeless Action! At (707) 742-3733 or Email them at [email protected]. For more information, contact Eileen Bill at [email protected]

The Sonoma County Democratic Party held a daily straw poll of the announced Democratic Presidential Candidates at the booth of the Coun-ty Fair. Thanks to all club members and support-ers who worked a shift at the booth. The results of the Presidential Poll are:

EXECUTIVE BOARD REPORT:

As noted, the July dinner meeting had a Readers Theatre presentation which was a departure from our normal guest speaker. Attendees enjoyed the presentation and learned more about the suffrage movement, California’s involvement, how Sonoma County voted in the election for California’s giving women the right to vote, and how the 19th Amendment was finally ratified.

Board members volunteered at the Annual Gala for the Sonoma County Conservation Action organization. Congressman Jared Huffman was the featured speaker, and the Gala was very successful.

David Cahill, VP of Membership, states we currently have 334 people on SRDC’s volunteer list, and 175 paid club members. We anticipated being very involved in the 2020 election.

Because 2020 will be the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, SRDC has commissioned a special button for our

club members and supporters to wear. The button (shown here) will be available at our club meetings for a donation of $2.00 (cash or check). We look forward to celebrating this throughout this year and next, and trust that

many will wear this button proudly in honor of our suffragists. This is part of fundraising for the club. Other ways to ensure our treasury stays healthy are being reviewed.

We look forward to working with our new catering team, daughter and mom duo of Nicky and Jean Rutkowski. BBQ Chicken is on the menu for our August meeting.

Nanci Hoban reports that she will continue to sponsor post card writing events, and will be working on post cards to Virginia in order to flip control of both their Senate and Lower House.
