As far back as 47 A.D., the Romans built a fortress as part of reinforcements along the Rhine where

the Cathedral square (Domplein) is situated today. It was from there in the 7th century, when the

English missionary Willibrord set himself up in that old fort, that a town began to develop. Utrecht

then started to grow into an important city with considerable ecclesiastical power. On church feast

days, churches, monasteries, convents and abbeys were full. Many traces of these buildings can still

be seen throughout the city.

Dom tower For more than six centuries, the city and its surroundings have been dominated by the magnificent Dom Tower, the highest medieval building in the Netherlands. Centraal MuseumThe Centraal Museum was built in 1838, making it the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands. The museum is housed in various buildings, of which a medieval monastery is the most important. Inside it is a true labyrinth. You can get lost in the many passages and stairwells and be surprised by the varied collection of classical, modern and applied art, which can be found alongside fashion and collections reflecting the history of the city.

The Rietveld Schröder house In 1924, furniture maker and architect Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) realized this unique building. It is the only building built according to the architectural principles of De Stijl. Utrecht is internationally known as the city where Rietveld lived and worked all his life.

LANGUAGE English is widely spoken in Utrecht and many people have a command of several other languages.

CLIMATE Utrecht’s climate is quite temperate, with mild summers and cold but generally not frigid winters. Rain is spread fairly evenly throughout the year. Spring is sunny and pleasant, while from June to September things warm up and the city transforms. October and November are usually quite wet, while December to February are cold, but often sunny. Our weather is eclectic, throughout the year, and the day!

DRESS CODE Utrecht is a casual city. Restaurants at some smarter hotels may require men to wear a suit and a tie. Dark suits for men and neat attire for women are common in business and banking circles. Generally, however, the dress code is relaxed, with T-shirts and jeans as common as black ties at the opera.
